2024 / Rebuilding Block 4 After Playoffs / Texans
For the first time in several years I will be focusing on college quarterbacks this season.
Check out: QB- Dustin Crum, Kent State (6-3 @ 201 lbs).....may be a nice sleeper pickup as an UDFA. Throws with accuracy, has an arm, and move for good yards using his feet. He's definitely going to need a PS season puttin gon NFL weight and strength. It would be a very decent way to add a developmental QB without having to utilize a draft pick in this years draft.

Strike this option....he's opted to return for his 2021 Senior season. He'll be an interesting watch for the 2022 NFL Draft.

I'm replacing Crum with QB- Peyton Ramsey, Northwestern (6-2 @ 215 lbs).....another nice sleeper who'll be sitting there as an UDFA. Full developmental QB who has solid running ability and possesses the arm to deliver NFL throws. A good QB to stash on the PS while he develops.

I have no interest in Crum but Ramsey is interesting. I definitely do not want to look past the draft but I am going to be very interested in how Caserio does with udfa after draft.

Most years I am anxious for draft to get here but am glad about 30 days remain.

Of course 2022 isn't a good yr to draft a QB.
Then don't force it. And don't use your pick on another position. Trade it for a 1 the following year plus additional picks. You should not just have an eye on QB's in the immediate draft, but also maybe as many as two years into the future; certainly one year. You have to be smart and then plan how to get the QB you have an eye on.

This time last year who had heard of Zack Wilson ? I dunno was he even a starter ?
I had, he was very good. The talent has always been there, the only reason you hadn't heard of him was because of injury.

Davis Mills is in the same boat with injury, but without the healthy productive yr before he entered the draft. But make no mistake Mills is very talented.

Totally agree, unless there's a generational QB in the draft, they should build the team up then draft the QB. IMHO

I think Scrum gets drafted. He’s not a sleeper anymore. I’m betting in the 5th.
If HOU is going to go after another QB I would hope they go after QB Davis Mills STAN. If he makes it to the 3rd, which is a slight possibility. He has serious potential as a starting QB and could be a real steal. I think HOU might need to spend future picks to get into the late 2nd to get him though and I’m not sure they can afford it.

Also, it’s going to be interesting to see where Darnold ends up in all of this if NYJ draft Wilson.

Would you trade into the 2nd for Mills?

After seeing what's out there in the 2022 draft at the QB position I think I would trade the 3rd and a 5th plus a 6th to go up and get Mills. He's got the athletic ability to become a long time starter. I would let him sit behind Taylor for a yr so the tank doesn't get screwed up.

I’m down with that. Mills has serious starting caliber talent. I’m watching Trask right now and his arm isn’t Mills level. I watched Mills rocket accurate balls in the rain and I think he missed 2 passes?!?!? For any of you wondering about Mills go watch his tape. He looks identical to Andrew Luck. It’s eerie. His movements and arm motions are almost exactly Luck and he’s extremely smart like Luck as well. He’s getting his degree this year.
Trask does look pretty good though.
I guess DEN gave Trask a serious work out before he really started this Pro Day.
I think Mills has a much more elite arm and elusiveness even with the knee than Trask.

I would have no problem whatsoever with Mills sitting and getting coached up for a year and then taking over the following year. I think he’s a steal in the 2nd.
But here’s the problem. NE probably likes him at 46. They could sit him behind Cam and do what we’re suggesting.
So, HOU would need to trade with JAX into that 45 spot and they are flush with picks so it’s definitely possible.
HOU would need to give up their 3rd, 67 and another 3rd next year to move up.

I would certainly give up a pair of 3's for Mills. They may have to give up a 2022 2nd or what I would offer a 2021 3rd and a 2021 5th plus a 2022 3rd for Mills. But I'm all in on Mills.

BTW, If they could come out of this draft with Mills and a CB like Gowan or Rochell I would consider this draft to be a success.

Agreed. Target Mills and go get him and then let the draft come to them and hit on the mid rounders. It takes away the need for a QB in 2022 and they can go BPA with that high pick.
I guarantee you Belichick is looking at Mills at 46. NE has no 3rd round pick. It was forfeited.
Mills is the prototypical QB he likes. Big, big elite arm, mobility and excellent pocket awareness and he’s really smart.
HOU’s gotta get to 45.

Jacksonville isn't going to trade with the Texans so Caserio has to trade ahead of #45.

I'm really hoping the Texans stay away from a quarterback in this draft. They will more likely be drafting in the top 3 of every round in the 2022 draft. Get your quarterback then, when you have a your full compliment of picks. And my god, the Texans have holes absolutely everywhere. Giving up more draft picks for a quarterback who would be sitting on the bench for at least a year while ignoring other more pressing needs, it just doesn't make sense to me. Have people forgotten how bad the defense was in 2020?

I'm looking at Howell or Rattler in 2022. JT Daniels may even sneak in there for QB1 on some teams draft board.

Mills has a much bigger, elite arm and is as elusive as those QBs.
Daniels is weak sauce, and Slovis and Nix aren’t even Round 1 picks. Nix is terrible.
Howell and Rattler have real QB1 traits though.
I get the thought that there will be other QBs that will rise to the top though like Z Wilson.
The kid who transferred from Oregon to TT is interesting.

I kinda like Rattler

Pass on the other guys.

If you like Mills then drafting him would help the 2021 tank. Then you would theoretically have your QB of the future and a bunch of high draft picks from the tank 2021 yr to put talent around Mills. Let Taylor take the beating in 2021 while Mills sits and learns. If you can trade DW4 next offseason for a bunch of picks that should help put even more talent around Mills.

I feel pretty much the same way ..... mainly because they don't have the bullets to get one of the top 2-3 QB's.

If they were able to unload Watson for a top 2-3 pick that would change my position but I just don't see anyone outside Wilson & Lawrence being Starting NFL QB's.

The idea that there are 3 or 4 projected in the top 10 is crazy to me.

Who's the QB ? Hell maybe Watson .... they can't trade him and he has to make some $$$ to pay his lawyers ....

Mills is really the perfect situation to HOU’s current predicament. Even if the Watson perv crap never came out Mills still would be the QB with elite, starting traits who could be there to resolve HOU’s problem.
If the Pac-12 had a schedule like the SEC and hadn’t totally F’d themselves and Mills had played even just 8 more games he probably grades out higher than Fields. Mills already to me grades out higher than Lance right now.
Lance is a total boom-bust project.

Yep, I dont get people who knock Mills for having started 11 games against D-1 competition, but have Lance as a top 10 pick when he's only started 18 or so games against D-2 competition.

I wanted to take a look at QB- Davis Mills (Stanford / 6-3 @ 225 lbs) since I hadn't really followed him this past season. I've studied asome critiques and noticed that everyone is in unison as far as his solid NFL size and arm strength. Analyst also praised his ability to throw the ball to every level with authority and great touch on his dump-off's and mid-range throws. He's seen as a prototypical pocket passer with adequate ability and strength to avoid the rush.....he's not going to kill a defense with his legs.

Now his biggest hit appears to be holding the ball too long in the pocket waiting for receivers to break containment which has caused him to underthrow his deep ball. The good, almost everyone see's this as a problem due to his lack of starting time at DIV I level and should be a trait that can be coached up in the NFL provided the team that drafts him is willing to give a season or two to develop.

The only thing I wouldn't be happy about, Tyrod Taylor being the veteran mentor for this young QB b/c he handles the position more as running job with the ability to pass. In all honesty.....Mills would be better served being with the Steelers or Bucs where he could develop with a QB and team that prize prototypical pocket passers.

Taylor was just with another rookie in Herbert. He turned out just fine.
I think just learning the playbook and emulating a pro is the most important aspect of a vet like Taylor. Mills is extremely mature and smart. He’s about to graduate. From Stanford.

I'm viewing him as a possible Tom Brady'esque QB. Give him a season to learn and get some solid QB coaching so they can help him with the downfield anticipation throws and he might reward the franchise with some great success.

I agree. He just needs a year with the coaching staff to refine his game and I think he’s an immediate, elite level QB.

Now, who do they trade with?

In my go-to source for player profiles and rankings, a paid site, Frank Coyle's Draft Insider's, Mills has moved ahead of Trask, with Mond in the #8 position behind Trask. With Miller now at #6, the top six QB's are now all underclassmen. I've had my eye on Trask for some time but have been paying attention to Mills since this forum discussion.

My big concern with Mills is his injury history. He had surgery on his left knee in high school and reinjured the same knee at Stanford his freshman year. Limited playing time the next two years may not be a real test for the health of that knee.

I know about the knee. It is what is it is. He’s still very mobile and the knee hasn’t had any problems since. Torn ACL’s aren’t what they once were as an injury. His mobility is sneaky good actually. He can move. Whoever takes him just needs to continue to invest in their O line.
Im now not even sure Mills makes it out of the 1st now.
Or the very top of the 2nd. To me Mills is light years more developed as an NFL passer than Drew Lock ever was and he went 42.
I could easily see teams trading back to the end of the 1st and snagging him. MIN, CHI or PITT. Fortunately, this is a really good draft in term of talent those teams need and there was no combine. Could play into HOU’s favor.
If he does make it to the 2nd, HOU needs to be aggressive cause this kid is a steal and could put this giant fustercluck of a problem with Watson behind them.

I doubt Mills go top of the 2nd. Those teams will be selecting one of the top 5 QB's. More likely to go bottom of 1st or then slides to mid to late 2nd. More favorably for the Texans. But this also pushes Trask back into range of the Texans. As of this moment I'm comfortable with either selection which falls to us.

Lance seems like a good kid and he’s a cool story but I wouldn’t draft him in the first three rounds. Too raw. his second contract will be here before he is ready to play in the NFL. He locks on to one target too much and didn’t have to read defenses a hole lot at NDS. of course I’m basing this off of limited video I have watched So take it wit a grain of salt.

Agreed. Lance’s accuracy form the pocket is atrocious. It’s bad. Real bad. I think he’s even under 50% throwing from the pocket. And he’s only ever played laughably bad, div 5 high school level defenses. Some of his highlights are extremely funny cause of the defensive players looking beyond lost out there.
But if he makes it to the 2nd, it’s going to get hot for him real quick.
I would love for HOU to spend and get up into the top of the 2nd.

That’s what I was trying to point out. Some teams might trade back to the bottom of the 1st and just take Mills. I don’t think MIN or CHI would take him where they are. They would trade back.

Looks like no trade will happen so I propose a poll for our pick @ #67
The question is simple - who should Texans take @#67? (Assuming these players may be available)
This is a deep draft and I predict a decent talent will fall to us.
BPA would be ideal but a lot of players mentioned should fall into a pretty close grade margin and Texans have needs across the board.
These choices are from NFL.com
You have two choices - you don't have to use both.
You may announce who you chose and expound on why.
Yes a couple of these likely won't be there but I have seen one in particular mocked to us by a well know national writer and I thought "no way..." So go along and enjoy.
Poll will be open until 4/30.
Edit - if you have someone else in mind not mentioned in the poll, please post him up.

Jabril Cox became an LSU linebacker with the goal of becoming something even more in the NFL Draft. Did he convert on his desire to ascend?

Jabril Cox, LB, LSU - NFL Draft Player Profile

What's in this article? Click to show
Between Micah Parsons, Zaven Collins, Dylan Moses, Baron Browning, and others, the 2021 linebacker class is stacked with high-level size/speed defenders on the second level. Another NFL Draft prospect who embodies this archetype is LSU linebacker Jabril Cox. Cox, an FCS transfer, used his 2020 season to prove he could make the leap to a higher competition level. Did he succeed, and how was his draft stock impacted?

Jabril Cox NFL Draft Profile
  • Position: Linebacker
  • School: LSU
  • Current Year: Redshirt Senior
  • Height: 6’2 7/8″
  • Weight: 233 pounds
  • Wingspan: 79 1/2″
  • Arm: 32 3/4″
  • Hand: 8 3/4″
Tony Pauline’s Jabril Cox Player profile
Positives: Athletic, disciplined run-and-chase linebacker with solid size. Agile, fluid moving laterally, and gets tremendous depth on pass drops. Efficient, instinctive, and goes sideline to sideline covering a terrific amount of area. Remains disciplined with assignments, effectively reads the action, and takes proper angles to plays.

Quickly picks up coverage assignments, stays with backs downfield, and plays to his 40 time. Fluid in his hips, possesses good change-of-direction skills, and really stands out in coverage. Effectively uses his hands to protect himself and is rarely off his feet.

Negatives: Not overly stout and doesn’t stack well against the run. Struggles taking on blocks.

Analysis: Cox is a hard-working linebacker who plays tough, instinctive football. He’s a true three-down defender and a traditional 4-3 outside linebacker who needs to get a bit stronger to complete his game.
Cox offers a tremendous amount of upside, and with proper coaching and in the right system, he could be a quick starter at the next level.

I saw a report on one of the senior games and the writer noted that Cox looked like the best player on the field.
Looks like he could do with some polish, but most players do when they step up to the NFL.

Thinking on the draft today, I think I'm leaning toward Steelb's plan, that is to leverage our 5, 6 and 7's and move our 3 into the 2nd round. We have 6 picks in these rounds to make a move. My intent would be to go after Davis Mills or Kyle Trask. One of these, possibly both, will fall into the 2nd.

We have signed a boatload of mid-tier players from which we should find the talent to contribute to this year's team as much, likely more, than any lower round draft picks.

If we can sign a QB this year, that leaves our, likely, high draft picks in 2022 to address positions and needs which will become more clear after a year in our new systems.

So, for the poll, I'm voting Mills or Trask.

(Edit) Looking at the numbers, we would likely need to use our 4, which would then put us at approx pick 48.

The Texans have Tyrod Taylor to bridge the QB position for the next couple of seasons while the team fills other positions.

I'm all in on the 2 Centers, Dickerson or Humphrey if either are available. At this point, my guess would be both being off the board by the time #67 arrives. So with that, I've moved my choice over to OG/C- Ben Cleveland, Georgia (6-6 @ 340 lbs) who's probably the strongest OL coming into the draft. He's an absolute barrier who doesn't get moved backwards, is plenty strong to start immediately, and plays with a nasty temperament......which is something the Texans OL needs right away.

A QB this early in the process is a nice way to burn up 2 years of a rookie contract. I'd make a QB a priority in the 2022 draft if the team is making some strides in the right direction and Caserio filled some holes with this limited draft. If not Taylor is still under contract and the Texans could finish filling holes with the 2022 draft and then focus on a QB in the 2023 draft. Texans have never used this approach in the past and I have no desire to watch them burn up a 3rd top drafted QB. Lay the foundation it just might yield new and much better results for the long-term.

Humphrey would be the safer option.
Dickerson has had 2 surguries on the same ACL.
Haven't looked at Cleveland so will check him out.

I would trade up using the 3rd/4th/ one of the 6ths for Mills. That would give him a coupleof seasons to learn. 1 under Tyrod and the other on the field in 2022. Then with the added talent in the draft and with the cap space available I would be setup well to compete for championships in 2023/2024 if Mills is the real deal. He's certainly got the talent. This would be making the best of a bad situation. I dont really like the 2022 QB class and Mills is as talented or more talented as any QB in the 2022 class.

Then I would try to trade back into the 4th rd using the high 5th and a 6th for either Jordan Smith or Ellerson Smith. Both of these edges have potential to become forces as pass rushers. They both just need to get stronger and should be able to do this with a professional S&C coach since they came from small schools.

For the purpose of this poll, I would go with the BPA who's Samuel. IMHO

A CB corps of Mitchell/Roby/Samuel with King/Reid at the S positions would be so much better than it was last yr. Also from this poll I would have a hard time picking between Cox and Samuel. I also love Turner but his injury history worries me. Turner has the ability to be one of the best Edges in this draft. IMHO (Violent/Bend/Long arms and uses his hands really well.

I think this would be a good idea...

Taylor and waiting in the wings for the 2022-2023 season drafted in the 3rd at #67 (if still available) Kyle Trask.

Then next year we can get something for Watson and have what appears to be a potential steal.

If you really want to go after Mills, you need to keep an eye out on Chicago at 52. Reports are they are interested in either Mills or Mond, to sit behind Dalton, and may be leaning to Mills. A 4 and a 6 only gets you to 56, pointwise.

The more I dig into this, I'm thinking the Patriots are seriously eying Trask. I could see them trading back in the 1st and taking him in the 1st round. Trask is an ideal fit for the Erhardt-Perkins offense and has an upside to be Belichick's next Brady. Or they could trade up from 46 and hope to get him in the second. But would Belichick risk him being there. A team like the Steelers might like him at 24.
