Culley's Offense & More on his ideas(article)

Solid question for a thread but article says very little. He'll run. He'll pass. Might look like Andy's...
To be fair there isn’t much they can say for sure. He’s never been an OC or HC so no one has any idea what his offense will look like. That could be good or it could be bad.

Interesting. Seems like a good idea to hire an OC that shares his vision of an offensive scheme instead of keeping leftovers from the previous HC that uses a different scheme.
Culley was probably the only dude they interviewed that would be submissive enough to accept Tim Kelly as his OC. If he had said no to Kelly he probably wouldn’t have gotten another shot at being a HC.

It would probably be more worthwhile to look into pep's history...

Article is dated 2013 and describes a lot of west coast principles in pep's offense. Most of what I've seen after that suggest a much more vertical offense...

Vertical offenses usually have long developing routes.

Wasn't this a criticism of BOB's offense?

OC Kelly is a Patriots offense guy and that is NOT a Andy Reid offense. Easterby Caserio is hiring coaches that fit the Patriots offense. The offense you will see this year is the same offense you saw last year.

Yeah but O’Brien’s was multiple......bad.
So, ironically, you can feel the footprint of Peyton Manning and that offense still in this playbook, stuff that they’ve done. Stuff that was good with Reggie Wayne. Stuff that was just good for the guys here, that’s worked with Clyde Christensen, the quarterbacks coach. Then there is a good element of the stuff that Bruce Arians had success with last year that worked with Andrew (Luck). Then there is the stuff that Pep did at Stanford with Jim Harbaugh and kind of what the 49ers are doing.
"For me, someone who’s played in kind of the West Coast verbage a good part of my career, the plays, I am swimming learning this playbook right now. It’s not just cookie cutter West Coast like people would say at all. They are putting a lot on every player."
This reads as very multiple and honestly not that different from whatever Tim Kelly is already doing.

Well, we know Kelly will eventually be the scapegoat for the 2 win season we are about to endure, so maybe they tried to placate Watson by keeping him around, then had to keep him since they blocked interview access to him. Now they are stuck with him for at least a season.

And Culley is just a placeholder anyway. He'll be here for the rebuild for 2-3 seasons (get like a 7-40-1 record), then jettisoned to find another coach that can hopefully take the collection of new talent to a winning mindset.

I don’t think they’re stuck with him at all. I think everyone knows why we kept him. If we get to the point where the Texans give up on the possibility of Watson staying, they can demote him at that time or promote Pep to Co-OC with Kelly being the silent OC.

What’s the media going to do, bash Texans for trying to keep Watson?

I doubt it.

They may even do something where Kelly is the OC, but the QB coach “calls the play” into the QBs helmet.

Just curious if the Texans can get into any kind of trouble with the NFL for blocking his interviews and then demoting him.

I've never heard of keeping an OC from a previous regime. Not saying it's never happened, but it is certainly unusual. New head coaches normally bring their own contacts.

The media are in a feeding frenzy with bashing the Texans right now. I do not think there is anything good the franchise can do in the eyes of the media. I've had to stop watching/reading/listening because they are just chasing parked cars at the moment.

The only thing I know about Kelly is that he's an O'Brien protégé for his entire coaching career. This could be a chance for him to separate himself from Bill, maybe even learn some new schemes from Culley so he can be his own OC in the future.

I've been thinking along these same lines. I'm interested to see how he does when he can be his own man and not looking over his shoulder for a teapot that's about to explode. I also wonder if keeping him on is a bit on an olive branch to DW4.

I don't remember what teams but a couple in my memory since I started watching/playing have kept a few coaches. I think 1 kept all but like 1 coach.

Nick is not doing anything really yet. If you notice, Cal and Easterby were suppose to fade away after a GM was hired. They have done the opposite.

Side note: Patriots run a very complex version of the WCO. At least when Brady was there. Hoodie is just smarter than most and knows how to tweak it up every week to take advantage of the D they are playing. He also is great at taking away the other teams key players. BOTH of these things I have NO problem with at all. It has won 6 SB titles.

How Culley motivates players

I bet I'm going to hate his post game press conference.

"Coach, can you explain to us what was going through your mind when you challenged that play you had absolutely nothing to gain?"

"Back in 1776 I was coaching the Kobayashi Maru & it seemed like a no win situation,. But I turned to my first mate & I said...."

30 minutes later someone will ask a 2nd question.

The bridge between stupid and useless is short.
So potentially you have culley's offense, Kelly's offense, and pep's offense on the same team. I can't see that working out and would love to know what kinda gumbo they're cooking up.
Surely there is some kinda structure in place dictating whats what?

What i want some media talking head to ask about is the run game. What are they doing schematically to fix it and who's in charge of revamping it?

At this point, I think retaining Kelly is a last ditch effort to please Watson. I can't see them keeping that baggage and i expect him to be demoted or terminated the day after Watson is traded.

I don't know if they are worried about trying to please him now. They own him, literally. And he and the team should know if they want him to jump he better say how high. He may not want to play for the team. However, they can do so much to his wallet it would be stupid to not play.

They should be and this team would be stupid not to try finding mutual ground. I've pointed it out elsewhere and will say it again:

Mandatory off-season workouts are April 5th. Watson will declare his intentions then no matter what (or fake a c-19 quarantine...)

The Texans will know whats what by then and thats when I expect trade talks/rumors to really explode.

In the meantime, they need to all have a sit down and take turns with the pillow...

The inherent problem with trying to find mutual ground is one side has to return calls for communication to even begin.

From what we can see - and obviously JMO - Caserio is going to be the adult in the room. He'll have Cal staying in his corner office riding his stuffed exotic animals ("yeehaw, mama!"), Jack will eventually annoy him with his platitudes to the point of being demoted to asst. manager of the Texans gift shop, and Nick will just be patient while waiting for his star QB to get over his little temper tantrum so they can build a football team around him.

As far as the offensive scheme, I think it'll probably stay the same with Kelly as OC. Deshaun had a great statistical year, so install a consistent run game and get the defense to at least be mediocre and they can be competitive.

Just because OB was OC in NE for a couple of years, I wouldn't consider the "system" OB tried to implement in Houston the Patriot's offense.
The Texans ran a spread offense under OB, not E-P and hardly "multiple".
I, for one, would enjoy seeing a truer version of the Patriot's offense than the hot garbage OB trotted out year after year.

Culley doesn't have an offense he hasn't been an OC since 1990 and that was at UTEP. We have no idea what we are going to use as the offense but odds are its going to be close what we have seen the past few years since Kelly was retained.

Keeping Tim Kelley on the staff gives us an idea of what we will see on offense. I hope Culley acts as head coach and lets his coordinators coordinate.

Culley does have an offense. It's whatever Tim Kelly is running, which he learned from somebody. The name escapes me at the moment.
