Culley's Offense & More on his ideas(article)

Like Kelly did last season?
I wasn’t happy about last season either but the more I’ve thought about it the more I’m not sure it can be laid at Kelly’s feet. First we had no receivers worth even being called a receiver after Fuller popped a drug test. Second the RBs literally would have gotten more yards if they had stood at the line and fell forward. Finally the defense couldn’t stop someone in a flag football game.

Even the best OC, which Kelly is far from I grant you, has to have players that can actually play. Texan players last year treated the whole season as though it was substitute teacher day and they just slacked off and threw paper airplanes.

I’m not excusing Kelly but I just don’t know what to make of it because after OB was fired the team quit and RAC just sat back and drew a HC paycheck which I don’t blame him for that either.

If Kelly controls the passing offense again it's not the most horrible thing ever. But the o-line and run game have to improve. Both were sh*t last year

Does Culley even have an offense? Does he have a playbook? I mean he never was a OC why would he? I’m wondering if he’ll have any influence at all.

If we get a good OL coach and we get a running game this offense would probably be pretty good. That is if Watson stays.

I have my doubts.

We’ve gotten to hung up on this idea of someone being an OC or DC before being a HC. Reid wasn’t, the Harbaugh brothers weren’t, OB was. I don’t know if the offense under Culley will be good or not but I do know we just saw what happens when a HC tries to fit his offense onto the team and be both OC and HC.

After that the idea of a HC that lets his OC and DC do their thing while he focuses on HC duties like clock management and throwing the flag is kind of refreshing.

Culley doesn't have an offense he hasn't been an OC since 1990 and that was at UTEP. We have no idea what we are going to use as the offense but odds are its going to be close what we have seen the past few years since Kelly was retained.
Why do you assume that he doesn't have an offense just because he hasn't been an OC in a while? I'm pretty confident that most position coaches have a preferred system that they would implement given the opportunity.

Hell half the members here probably have an idea of what system they'd run if they got the chance

Oh I agree. I have no problem with the structure of this regime. It’s old school so I like it. The title of the thread is “Kelly’s offense”. I’m just saying I don't think he has one.

So he’s going to change Kelly’s system?

what is actually the problem the kelly, watson had his best season to date and pretty much the best in the nfl
I think people don't want Kelly because he still has O'Brien's stamp on him and because he didn't have a run game and had an underperforming offensive line. I don't know if the run game and o-line is really something we can lay at his feet... but it might be.

We’ve had an underperforming run game and Oline since way before Kelly. The only RB in the last 6 years to be decent was Hyde and the line is all Devlin.

Yep, which should tell you just how good a talent #4 is. No run game, poor o-line, and a poorly designed offense with poor route designs, and never creating mismatches. Not to mention a game plan that basically wastes their first drive of the game, every game.

Imagine an offense with some actual creativity. One where receivers aren’t bunched together. One that doesn’t successfully use TEs one game and forgets about them for the next 2.

So that’s the actual problem with Kelly. He’s been with OB since 2012. It’s still OB’s offense and philosophy. The having to learn 10,000 plays and never getting really good at a handful or 2.

How much of that was on Kelly? I'm really hoping a new OL coach, along with an upgrade at the RB position will help in that area.
The Texans have driven me nuts with all of these athletes at the TE and RB positions then hardly ever using them. It's like OB wanted them as decoys or something.

I never said that. What I said was that I don't believe a coach of his experience doesn't have a system that he prefers.
Whether he chooses his own or decides to use another one is outside my point

So Watson gets sole credit for his record breaking season? Does he then get sole blame for going 4-12? Or any blame really. Because either it’s a team effort on all parts of the game or it’s not.

I thought it meant Quit ******* Talking.
IF thats what it meant not only would every post I make here be qouted as such.

My wife would have it tattooed backwards on my forehead as a reminder every morning when I looked in the mirror to start my day and before going to bed at night incase I forgot through the day sometime.

I think you're underrating Cooks/Cobb/Coutee.

Hmm 🤔
I mean, to me, Smith sounds like a complete idiot for thinking that he should have been given an opportunity he hadn't earned, yet. He hadn't been voted into the Pro Bowl to catch passes. I'd have sent his ass back to Harbaugh, too.

Maybe but they haven’t exactly lit the world on fire since they all got here and seeing as it will be the same OC I’m not sure they will. Personally I’m hoping the Texans go back to a more defense first approach.

Smith has the experience to build an immovable object type defense and with the type of offenses we are seeing in the AFC I just don’t see us winning if we try to out shoot them.

On the other hand though the AFC has good but not great defenses and even those good defenses have gotten their teams pretty far. Bills basically rode their defense into the playoffs. A great defense can help cover for a bad offense but a great offense can almost never score enough to make up for a bad defense.

How quaint. I wanted a coach with experience, but ... damn. His WIKI has his coaching origins in the 70's ... and in four decades hasn't spent more than 3 consecutive years with a team, and was closer to retirement than graduating to offensive coordinator. Thank goodness we had divine intervention to keep him from being snatched up by someone else.

The Bills scored 38 points per game in their last 8 games, and were the 2nd highest scoring team in the league for the season. Their defense was 16th in points allowed, and 14th overall. They were far from basically riding their defense into the playoffs.
True, site I looked at was ranking the teams in the playoffs vs the whole season ranking.

He was with Philly from 1999 to 2010 and followed Reid to KC.

Until 2012 in Philly. While following Reid, why didn't he make it past receivers coach? If he's a receivers specialist and only a receivers specialist, why is he a head coach?
Why was Reid with GB from 92 to 98 and never made it past offensive line and QB coach then got made a HC?

Why was John Harbaugh just a special teams coordinator from 89 to 06 and only 8 of those years in the NFL then spent 1 year as a defensive backs coach before being made a HC?

Guess his brother Jim was a little better, he was Raiders QB coach for 2 years then was made a HC at San Diego and then Stanford before becoming 49ers HC.

At this point who really care when there is only one Qb on the team and he doesn't want to be hear and losing a all pro defensive player.

Coutee reminds me of Jacoby Jones: occasional flashes of talent against a larger picture of extreme averageness to ineptitude.
Hopefully he can grow under the new regime and learn to run routes better, in addition to stopping his infuriating tendency to fumble the ball on what seems like once per every 10 catches. Culley being a Wr coach should be able to help Counter with this.

I know most posters think BOBs play calling was his biggest fault. To me hiring a staff that couldn't develop players like Coutee that are obviously talented was BOBs biggest fault.

If only there were people out there you could pay to transform raw talent into competent players.
To be fair nobody was was able to help Jacoby improve. He lost his nerve after he broke his collar bone against the Colts and although he played for a long time because he was extremely talented, he never reached the heights his career could have.
