Should we trade Watson?

Should we trade Watson?

  • Yes, without a doubt.

  • Yes, depending on compensation (please list your trade scenario).

  • No, never.

  • No, unless he plays hardball and sits.

Results are only viewable after voting.
It will never come to him sitting out. He obviously does not care for the way the Texans are moving and wants out. They will move him before the draft, it is in everyone’s best interest!

Its not in the Texans best interest nor is it in the best interest of the other 31 owners to let him dictate his contract terms with 5 years on it and the Texans being on the hook for almost $30million in up front money.
The rest of the league does not want that precedent set. I would wager the 31 other owners are in McNairs ear telling him just that.

This makes things even more interesting. Can you imagine what Caserio will get for Watson? Plus whatever he can get for JJ. Watt. We might be in good shape.View attachment 7696

You do realize that rams took Goff and his contract in the deal?

He's acting immature and lame. But I don't care. I'd rather he and the Texans mend their fences and go about the business of trying to get back in the hunt of winning a championship than the Texans responding out of emotions; trading him to a crappy franchise out of spite, which they can not do anyway.

I'd like to see them mend fences too .... It seems much ado about nothing if you ask me. No player gets to say who the GM is and few get input on coaches.
I wish he would just be upfront about what he's pissy about ....

We don't know that he hasn't been with the front office. Either himself or through his agent. I credit him for not going public with it.

He's acting like they shot his dog .... WTF did they do that hurt his wittle feelings so terribly?

I hope both sides dig in so deep no one comes out.

My early bet was that the fences would be mended and Watson would be starting QB on the Texans the Sunday after Labor Day.

I now think that both sides are going to dig in and place each other in the worst position possible.

Im curious how much his salary can be recouped through fines? I know that doesn't go back to the cap but it's something.

I also wonder if dw understands the longer this drags out the more it effects him in advertising. No HEB jalapeño poppin for him if half of Houston hates him.

Since it seems like Watson is hell bent on leaving, I hope that Caserio ships him to the Jets for an exaggerated haul of draft picks. Let’s get Justin Fields at with the 3rd overall pick, and see what the new QB Coach can do with him.

I believe its $40,000 per day for training camp $ game checks are something like $960k for preseason games.

Then there's the $27m in bonus money that they could go after him for.

You are probably right , this one's likely to get ugly.

Problem for Watson is he has no legal leg to stand on. He hasn't even begun to fulfill his new contract as technically next season is the 5th year option , the final year of his rookie contract.

As for the ownership / management , you have to hope that they don't blink in this staring contest as this would be completely and totally terrible for the league , particularly smaller market teams. The 31 other owners are probably telling McNair he has to draw a line in the sand on this. (well 30 of the 31 other owners).

If Watson shows up and refuses to play or half asses it , he's hurting himself too .... marketability drops and what about your legacy ?
The team can suspend him for up to 4 weeks without pay but they can also deactivate the player for "non performance related issues" and withhold game checks.
The team also gets salary cap credit in the current season for the amount of the suspensions

Teams can recoup the same proportion of the prorated amount of a player's signing bonus for the suspension - prorated amount of a player's signing bonus as he's losing in base salary but signing bonus recovered doesn't affect the immediate cap - it goes to the following seasons cap.
Roster, reporting and option bonuses can also be recouped.

Something interesting is that almost every contract under the new CBA has language that allows the team to void the contract guarantees for various things - PED usage, substance abuse, conduct detrimental and personal conduct suspensions - yet he'd still be under contract to the team.

The more I think about it , if the team wants to play hardball .... Watson is the one who has the most to lose.

Too many people are in his ear pushing their own agenda. They’re making it a real big deal about Cal lying to him as well as the way he was informed about the Hopkins trade. My thing is he really needs to stop the madness. I’m sure Hop told him he was going to force his way out of Houston.

I don’t think this relationship is mend able. Dude is too far gone and is willing to play hardball.

Did he also see how the fans responded to Harden’s crap. Them jokers wrote up a bunch of bad reviews on his restaurant way before it opened. Lol

Well, whether perceived or actual Watson and those around think the slight to him is real and that is all that matters to him. I mentioned this early on that has no practical experience with corporate management and really did /does not know that certain things are lies when they are said "empower you to make decisions" "open door policy" "including you in the decision-making". The people advising him (including Andre) have other agendas or all naive to think he was going to be truly included.

Watson is also messing with other QBs' ability to get money early. Along with underperforming Wentz and Goff, if I am an owner I now wait at least until after year 4, if not 5 before writing that check.

Because the agent's tack has been to paint the Texans in as worst position possible, the Texans outside of fence-mending are pretty much in a no-win situation from the public, so whether trade Watson or dig-in, the organization is going to be wrong, so digging-in has little to no consequence already most dysfunctional franchise in the NFL according to some.

I will a do a long write the root problem with the issue: Cal McNair some other time and space.

I agree, the damage is done! Now, how best to move forward! The mismanagement of this franchise has been costly and the Watson situation is just another result of a bigger systemic problem! This recent situation is a result of hanging onto OB as a Coach, promoting him to GM, handicapping the Texans future by giving away the future drafts for little value in return! Add to that, the insistence on Jack Easterby holding a key role in management, further compounding the chaos and mismanagement of the franchise! This entire systemic failure to effectively manage the business has been costly!

Every Texan fan realizes the value Watson brings to the team, but on the flip side, the franchise is a business that can’t afford to allow one disgruntled, highly paid employee destroy! In every business, a disgruntled employee (especially in a key role IE; QB) is poison to the entire organization! You either recognize the poison exists and address it, or you let it continue to build, fester and spread throughout, and much later wish you had made the tough decision early and cut your losses!

Caserio and Culley should both sit down with Watson NOW, not later and talk face to face...this is a MUST DO! If it is apparent in this meeting that amends are impossible, then they should move forward with a trade for the appropriate value! With a new GM with a proven history and a new Coach with much experience, some key management positions have been filled. I would still remove Jack Easterby from his current his role to further remove all elements of the systemic problems of past! Cal should let the new GM and Coach build and manage this team and business towards success! If he wants the Texans to survive and compete, he has to STOP putting bandaids on a decade long systemic problems and expecting different and remarkable results year after year!

Well whatever they do, I wish they'd hurry up and do it. Either way, get it done and let's move forward. The Texans have stepped in an ant hill and now it's time to take their stupid foot off the anthill.
Unfortunately if they do trade Watson, I don’t think it’ll happen for a few weeks. I’d love for them to be able to repair the relationship, but I fear that Cal has done irreparable damage.
Watson’s value will get bigger the closer we get to the draft, so it’s just a wait and see.
I think JJ will be the first traded.

so far i have seen nothing to indicate a trade is in the works also this mathew stafford trade shows how expensive DW will be, im not saying their WONT be a trade just no indication apart from the front office saying he wont be traded lol

If it seems that DW is willing to sit out the season, then they’re definitely going to consider a trade with a a boatload of picks.
I don’t want him to leave, but I don’t think the FO can afford to go into the season with a backup QB starting under center.

Watson is his agent's puppet. His agent is orchestrating all of this, thats why we haven't heard from him. Mulugheta is the puppet master that's leaking info, is the source when Rappaport and others say "sources close to...." , he's in it for the $$$, get him to NY and Watson can do 300 million plus in appearances, commercials etc...and 10% goes to him.
I can't think of any other reason, doesn't make sense that Watson would do this on his own. Mulugheta's been whispering in his ear for awhile and now he's starting to believe.
That's what I'm starting to think.

Im contemplating the next move here by either side. Keep in mind the Texans OTAS are scheduled for April 5th. That is seemingly a key date in this saga if things aren't resolved before then.

I've already noticed more negative comments both here and on profootballtalk about dw. He's me first and a quitter. I expect that narrative will grow as this fiasco drags on.

If there are texts showcasing how stupid cal and easterby are I presume they'll be released soon. We might also see Watson in a national media format explaining his side of things. (Think something like a 5 minute segment on good morning football.) We'll see.

So you’re saying we won’t get any trade offers?

Originally I was adamantly against even considering trading DW.

Fast forward to **** Watson and the horse he rode in on.
He doesn't want to be here. I don't want him.
Even if he stays, I'll never root for him again.

I'm not saying his complaints are without merit. But I'm done with him.

Put me down for trading him to the Jets and using their 1.2 for Zach Wilson

Just to clarify as it says under his picture it is a third-round pick 2021 draft, first round in 22 and another first round in 2023. I am not interested in that deal as even a primary jumping off point. We need the majority of a trade haul to be immediate. Definitely want 2022 round one and two but player(s) now as well as picks in April.

And this is exactly as how it should be. Several posters are complaining about how Cal McNair has done business in the recent past. However, that seems to be changing. Teams are already presenting trade proposals to the Texans. I believe Janice has told her son to stiffen his backbone and act like the CEO of a Multi billion-dollar company. She is well aware of the problems that we all have enumerated. She is moving easterby off of the stage and behind the curtain where he belongs. She hired a GM in Nick Caserio that her husband wanted. She now has a head coach that is respected by players and other NFL Personnel throughout the league regardless of what you and I think of David culley. Culley has in turn hired very well respected and player loved former head coach Lovie Smith as defensive coordinator. These are all solid if not spectacular pics. I think she is putting a foot forward to try to correct some of the images we as fans and her players have of her front office.

This next week and perhaps part of the following will be gathering and evaluating all trade offers. They need to have a trade of Watson at least in appearance to have taken much reflection and some reluctance in letting him leave Houston.

I do not see any need or advantage in letting this dragged out until the middle of March. I think we will have word of a final decision no later than the third week in February.

The benefit of the Matthew Stafford trade as I see it is the Los Angeles Rams reportedly coming out of nowhere to snag the seasoned vet. This will put more pressure on the two leading candidates for DW. I believe both dolphins and jets are now calculating their final bottom line offers. All we need now is for Caserio to prove he is a poker playing negotiator. Do not hesitate to hang up the phone if either team attempts to lowball you. Of course as others have stated DW needs for his new team to keep as much as possible for him to play with. Having said that he needs to get the deal done and begin his preparation as the leader he wants to be in his new location.

The agent is doing exactly what he should for his client as he did for Jamal Adams.

Wait, are saying Caserio doesn't have final say?

Couldn't resist.

You just got me to thinking? Are we gonna just draft choir boys or actual talent?
Well I personally hope that at 1.2 we select A QB who might sing in the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

He's perceived as a generational franchise QB, maybe half a step below Mahomes (all of that is up for argument, but that's the perception), so 5 firsts would be my minimum or my starting point. You want to give me 4 firsts and a stud starter, I'll take that, too. But I'm not trading a young franchise QB in his prime for anything other than a historic haul.
No less than 3 firsts and 2 seconds at the very least. And I would want a 2nd for Watts!
