Head Coach Candidates

How about their playoff run last year? How about the work he has done with Tannehill? The Titans defense might be just as bad as the Texans, but they still won 11 games.

For the WCO fans, he is basically running the Shanny/Kubiak offense that was implemented by Matt LaFleur.

I wouldn’t just evaluate him strictly on his games against the Texans. Look at his body of work. Not his fault that a vanilla game plan can still score 41 points against this terrible defense.

Not my 1st choice, (Saleh) but definitely a guy they should look at closely.

Tim Kelly. It’s what we deserve
With our lack of talent and draft capital and cap, I really want a coaching staff who teaches details and fundamentals. When I watch the OLine blocking simple running plays or screens, it is clear they don't coach the details, timing and nuances very well. Defense has a lot of free lancing versus discipline, so the same there. I feel if we were better at fundamentals, some of this would improve fairly quickly. So even if Kelly is getting results with OB gone, I don't think he is the detail guy I would want for OC and DC.

I don't want anyone from the current staff to stay I want the new coach to bring in his own guys and wash the stink from BOB away from this team.

Every single person associated with that travesty should be eliminated from this team.

It's clear that that's not happening and they're even doubling down on some of those same elements.

Therefore, there's no hope.

Who is doing the interviewing in Atlanta and Detroit? Neither franchise has hired a GM.

Maybe the Texans aren’t the most dysfunctional team after all?
Yes sir I'm starting to realize and appreciate that getting a man with such vast experience as an NFL executive in an elite organization like the Patriots has upped the Texans competance level substantially ,especially after for the first time seeing Cal McNair if only thru a few brief comments who I can see now might have been easily manipulated by a strong personality like Bill O'Brien.

This guy is still not interviewing well...wonder what his issue is.

I remember years back hearing a radio interview with Dom Capers where he described a lot of off field stuff he did on a daily basis. He made travel arrangements, secured hotels, coordinated team meals on the road, etc. Essentially, a lot of logistics for the team i never considered. I always assumed teams just had "people" for that ,but apparently HC's are heavily involved. Bieniemy and a lot of other younger candidates are probably very weak in this area even if they're great x's and o's guys.

Could be about the staff Bieniemy wants to bring with him? If he can't lure legit dc's doesn't that lessen his value? What about his approach to replacing his coaches? If he's overly loyal like Kubiak was to frank Bush its a problem right?

And of ofcourse, whats his stance when it comes to a franchise vs individual players? Organizations will expect loyalty on a topic like that. As a former player, that might be a problem for Bieniemy...

Maybe he wants more control than a team is willing to give and it causes a hc/gm conflict?

It could be any number of things. Sometimes, guys just suck at interviews no matter how good they would be as a boss. We've probably all seen that in our own jobs.

Maybe it's the guys doing the interviews? Arthur Blank has built a hellava hardware store. A meh football franchise. His President and CEO, Rich McKay, has hired four HCs in 17 years. Jim Mora (the younger one), Bobby Petrino (fired during 1st season), Mike Smith (no one knew who this was, before and after he was hired), and Dan Quinn (Legion of Boom DC). If I'm interviewing Blank and McKay as interviewers, I'm asking "Why do you suck so hard at interviewing?"

We often complain about how "corporate" the Texans front office and ownership has been. With reason. The Falcons currently have 17 Vice Presidents listed among their staff. Yeah. If a HC candidate who's more of a football guy and less of a corporate brown noser comes into Atlanta for an interview, he might rub Blank, McKay, and their 17 Veeps the wrong way.

Just saying.

you saying all that and Rick Smith is currently the front runner for their GM position.

I think what’s being revealed about EB is that he might just be a football guy. and Teams who are/have interviewed him are finding that out and that just won’t due for an HC in today’s NFL as the press requirements alone are very demanding.

while people close to him know he’s a good coach, he’s an “acquired taste” in that he’s bluntly honest ........maybe a little too honest about things for these owners and GM’s in these interviews. So the chiefs folks....Reid, Mahomes and co. are trying to do their part and help him get owners to look past that...he and Bruce Arians.....very similar in this regard.

That's what I like about him. And that's why I liked Caserio the first time I heard him (which was yesterday). Nick doesn't come off as corporate. Smart as hell, but not corporate. Both he and Bieniemy seem similar in how they see things. Caserio talking about "The Process". Bieniemy talking about staying in the "now". I just think they should meet.

Just being a football guy definitely has its pluses, but I think I’d prefer my HC’s to have a little more tools in the belt than that. That type of blunt honesty has the potential to draw out conflict....especially with folks on the same level as you or close to it...like with a GM who releases a guy you don’t want released.

Bad interview to me doesn't mean he's bad in front of the camera, or to the media. We know that's not the case as he speaks well at the podium.

To me, a bad interview is when the interviewee has no specifics in his answers. No examples of when he demonstrates the ability or capacities they are looking for.

If I were interviewing Bieniemy I'm going to try to ask questions that separates him from Mahomes on one side & Ried on the other.

If he's truly humble, his answers may not come across how I'd like. If he tells me Mahomes success is 99% Mahomes I'm going to be looking for concrete examples of how he fosters Mahomes talent. & if his answers are centered around what Ried tells him to do... I'm not going to be very impressed. But if he tells me about how Mahomes sees things & how he's had to adapt his presentation so he & Mahomes are on the same page, I'd be more impressed.

Thats the other side of the coin and a fair point. I agree 100%. It wasn’t the focus of my previous post due to the nature of the thread (targeting candidates.)

If we focus purely on those deciding who the next hc is i have a question:

Does anyone expect them to make the right choice? I have my doubts.

Bieniemy could be the next Lombardi for all we know and I would fully expect us to f that up. These clowns will never know though because they didn't bother to interview him.

What we did see was political maneuvering and it should show just how messed up our approach and agenda really is. We just interviewed Tim Kelly as a hc candidate and still haven't bothered with Bieniemy or Saleh(sp)? Wtf?

Kelly is an afterthought among candidates and has no business getting that opportunity. But he did. Why? To appease Dw? To give Kelly experience in the interview process and elevate his stature for future openings? To give Casserio experience in the interview process?

Or maybe because Kelly and some in the hiring process share the same agent...

You scratch my back, I'll scratch yours.

This is a sham.

I've seen some information indicating that Kelly was interviewing more for deciding if he would remain in staff than be considered for HC

Makes me wonder how well a young coach like Brady did in supplying answers during his interview that the responses afterward were, "strong interview". This was Brady's first NFL HC'ing job interview.....and he nailed his opportunity. I look forward to the feedback from Caserio if Brady is given an extended interview by the new GM. Brady is also going to get integerview opportunities with the Chargers and Falcons. I wish the Texans had remained mum to some degree on Brady's interview results....if he nails the Chargers and Falcons interviews, he'll probably get more. I hope Caserio gets him back in for a more in depth interview before he starts taking more interviews.

Ok, now I am confused. He struggled with the interview? Or.....he had a strong interview?

The source said Falcons officials are furious about reports that Bieniemy, 51, did not interview well and "absolutely refute" those reports.

depends on who you talk to really. That’s the difference between what Wilson said and whoever Wyche apparently talked to.

on a side note, schottenheimer’s offense looks putrid....any HC interviews he may have gotten are drying up before our eyes.

That pass offense was either deep routes or sacks. Another OC that didn't realize his OL is being manhandled by an elite defense and never adjusted.

Caserio looked like he did a little before his presser, maybe Cal can bum some off Nick

Fun fact: around 10 years ago, I saw a former player do a line of coke in a kitchen pantry at a party.
He was a position coach for another team at the time but several years later he was a position coach for the Texans.
My wife also beat him in winner take all Texas hold em and walked away with around $200.

Thats a great story. Would be better if you said who...

Has there ever been a NFL HC coming into a job with as little experience as Joe Brady? 8 years coaching experience, total. 5 years ago, Brady was a grad assistant at Penn State. 7 years ago, a LB coach at his alma mater, a FCS school.

I get it, Brady looks like a wunderkind. I would talk to the guy, for sure. But in Brady's 1st year as an NFL OC, his offense was 21st in yards, 24th in points. Brady's record is likely to improve. He will be an NFL HC, one day, if it does. But here? Now? I don't think so.

If we hire Brady, we better keep Romeo around as an assistant HC or advisor. Because he is going to get in situations where a guy like Romeo can help him a lot. If we make him an advisor, his win/loss record isn't important. It's how you handle players and situations.

Anthony Weaver? lol

I watched some interviews with Daboll and Brady. I think I like the idea of Brady as HC. Very personable, energetic, well spoken, high character, high football IQ. I think Watson would relate very well with him. I hope he gets serious consideration.

Building a staff around him would be the challenge, might have to lean on Caserio's connections for that. I would not be opposed to pairing Brady with Kelly as QB coach or something. I think this insulates Watson and puts people around him that would make him feel happy again.

According the legit reports, that wasn't Watson's beef. It was that he wasn't brought into the conversation on the GM selection. As Cal said he would be.

I don't believe him to be honest. We went after the same guy we hired last year. No chance Watson didn't know he was no question the main target. He can say all this about not being consulted, but it is bunk. He knew it was coming and he also probably has an idea what type HC Nick is looking for. That is likely why he is upset. Was he even on the GM committee? I know he was on the HC...not recalling anyone saying he was helping with the GM. He might have thought that he was and maybe he was afterall. But, he was not going to make the call. Cal and Easterby were and did.

Maybe the best bet is a defensive head coach and retain Kelly as OC.

Hopefully keeps DW happy, provides consistency of the system on that side of the ball, and allows the HC to try to build something out of the dumpster fire on defense.

Kelly seems serviceable to me and there's definitely value in not changing offensive systems. Providing Kelly can get some kind of runny game going.

I'd throw in, allowing DW to call some series on the field depending on situation. Let him go up tempo and call some plays. I'd like to see how that works.

Huge problem.
The HC, regardless of what side of the ball they are mainly use to, set up an offense. Meaning a D minded HC is still going to setup a style and system they are going to use. The OC is going to just teach it to the players via the position coaches and HC. And the OC will call plays on game day. Meaning, Kelly's system is not what would be used in all likelihood.
