While you are correct it will be interesting to see what Watson is willing to give up to have a team that can win year after year. Rogers has always whined about not having a team around him but you never saw him be willing to take a pay cut, Brady wanted rings more than he did zeros on his paycheck so he played way below his value.

Granted with OB calling the shots it may not matter even if Watson played for a ham sandwich, but, as pointed out in other posts/threads even the best Coaches haven’t won when 15%+ of the salary goes to the QB.
A bit unfair to expect players to take pay cuts, "if" they truly care about winning year after year. Financially, every player is in different situations. Watson, by himself, is taking care of alot of people... while Brady is married to a woman making 30 mil a year.

quick google search revealed

When it comes to the pair's career earnings, Brady sits around $235 million, however, Bündchen has raked in an amount that's pretty hard to beat. Forbes estimates that the Brazilian beauty's earnings more than double that at $488 million. And combined, their earnings come to well over $700 million.Oct 1, 2019

I don't expect him or anyone to take a pay cut, in fact I've said the exact opposite, but the fact remains that you can't build a championship team when the QB is making 15%+ of the cap. Chiefs MIGHT can do it next year but if so they will be the first team in history to do so. Some on here say that Watson just wants to win and that is what is most important to him, ok if that is the case then he has to take the hit so the team can be its absolute best. If he doesn't then, while winning maybe important to him, it's not the most important thing to him.

Now that I think about it, New England wasn't spending that money on WRs, RBs, or even OLs. They might have paid a TE every now & then, but it's not like they were big players in FA year after year. So I don't know how much Brady's home town discount really affected the team.

My apologies for misinterpreting your post. I read it as, "Brady cared about winning because he took a paycut. If Watson cares, he should do the same."

I think winning is important to all players, but making sure their family (and extended family) are taken care of for the rest of their lives are even more important. I bet if Brady grew up in government housing, and wasn't married to a multi-millionaire, he'd be trying to make as much money from the Pats as possible.

Possibly but Brady didn't get married till 09 so he had been in the NFL almost a decade by then and, I believe but haven't taken the time to research, was already playing under market value. Thing about Brady is that I honestly believe he has never gotten over being drafted in the 6th round. I have never seen a player with a bigger chip on his shoulder and feeling like he always has something to prove. We are even seeing it now, a legendary, HoF maybe even GOAT career and he still has something to prove, that it was him and not Belechick that made the Pats what they were. I don't expect Watson to be Brady, I expect Watson to be Watson and, mostly, that is good enough for me. However I will have an issue if he ever does like Rogers does and bitches and moans about not having a team while handicapping the team with his salary. You can't make both top dollar and expect to be surrounded by all stars also making or deserving to make top dollar.

I personally have no problem with players trying to make as much money as possible. It's still the GM's job to figure out how to build a successful roster. If the GM feels there's no way he can succeed if he gives X amount to a specific player, then it's his job to not give it.

On paper I agree with you, however the reality is that often your hands are tied as a GM. This IS NOT a defense of OB it is at best a defense of all 32 GMs who, again, have not once been able to make it work.

Fact is without a franchise QB most teams have no real chance and even if they try to build without one fans riot. Can you imagine if Chiefs don’t give Mahomes the money? Look at what has happened to the cowgirls with Dak. GB is trying to move on from Rogers and they are considered to have overtaken the Hopkins trade as the worst move of the off season.

Can’t win a championship after paying your QB, can’t win a championship without a franchise QB unless the stars align and should you try and play hardball with them some other team just looking to make a splash will break records paying them. Really is damned if you do and damned if you don’t. Only hope seems to be catch t during that sweet time of rookie contract or have a QB that goes the Brady route of which only Brady has done.

When you add in pressure from the owner to keep the golden merchandise goose happy, which even BB fell pray to, paying the face of the franchise just became an even more “must do” item.

Yikes! Who is getting the Kool Aid ready?

Pretty much mirror's what the Vegas odds makers put out - that I posted a couple weeks ago - the Texans #3 in the division behind both the Colts and Titans.

Both of those teams got better this offseason - the Texans , not so much. They lost two impact players in Hopkins and Reader and didn't adequately replace either of them - then there's the secondary …. may be the leagues worst.

I pretty much agree with everything you said. But, the Titans and the Colts don't have Deshaun Watson. Or a reasonable facsimile. All 3 of these teams are still close in talent. I always take the team with the best QB as the tiebreaker.

but ....... but what about Brandin Cooks, Randall Cobb, David Johnson, Russ Blacklock and JD Clowney Jr (Greenard)??? There are some who feel like it was a homerun offseason for Houston.

No tried and true analysts or ex GMs have said that, but you know some pretty die hard fans are convinced! Should be good enough for the rest of the world! LOL

With that schedule I only see wins over the Browns, Lions, and Bengals. Prediction is the season is cancelled and it saves A$$face's job.

He did. There is no other reason for why he did.

That's pretty ignorant considering the fact that we're talking about people making over $20 Million dollars a year. Acting as if that is somehow barely above the poverty line is downright hilarious and disingenuous. Any athlete coming from that situation is set for life as long as he doesn't blow his money like so many athletes do. Athletes have taken slight pay cuts for years. Sure, everyone doesn't do it or have to, but others have. He isn't the only one.

Gronk was always underpaid too. His relationship with Belicheck became rocky because of it too.

And yes they were always big players in FA. They just weren't the big players to go out and sign the big names for the large contracts. They'd sign good players here and there and they'd find as many value pick ups as they could. NE has always been notorious for jumping on situations with disgruntled players or busts that didn't work out on other teams where they get them for cheap short deals, because players figured they can maybe get a ring in NE or rebuild their value for FA again.

Has very little to do with it.

When you and your spouse both make that type of income they generally have their money separate especially when people get divorced so much being married to athletes. Brady makes good money with endorsements and other things for himself. His TB12 brand is huge. This idea that he just milks off of his wife is inaccurate and just something that gets regurgitated around the web with no validity to it.

Cooks and Cobb are not in the same universe as Hopkins in terms of talent. Hopkins has arguably been the best WR in the league the past 2-3 years.

David Johnson hasn't been better than average in a couple years.

And while I like both Blacklock and Greenard - Neither are replacements for what Reader did at the nose.

Who's covering opposing TE's? How do they plan to stop the run ?

Cooks is easily as talented as Hopkins. He is much faster and quicker than Hopkins, but just not as tall size wise. It doesn't make him better though. Hopkins has enormous hands which help him on jump balls and catching in general. His instincts and his route running are good skills he has due to discipline and repetition. His use of hands is probably his best ability as a receiver that separates him from other guys a lot of the times to me. Those things aren't raw talent as much as natural speed, quickness, and cutting abilities are. Cooks has unbelievable raw talent. He doesn't possess near as many skills as a receiver though.

Except for guys like Gilmore/Revis this is true.

They spent top dollar to get the best FA CB's on the market.

Show of hands if you think this off-season was a homerun.

I think that's yet to be seen ….. It may well be. The results of this season aren't really an indicator of the offseason being a success.

I think they had a really great draft …. even if they didn't fill what I thought were the right holes. They came away with 3 players who can impact the defense early on.

Blacklock was ranked top 3 at his position in the draft.
Greenard was a desperate need and a quality pick.
John Reid might be the number one slot corner out of training camp.
And you really can't complain about Charlie Heck either - he'll likely be the swing tackle for the next couple years and has the potential to be a starter eventually.

None of that offsets the stupidity of trading away Hopkins or letting Reader go without a suitable replacement.

They we're always finding bargain pass rushers and DB's ….. I think part of that was because they were always in the hunt for superbowls. But they routinely let guys go who wanted big money and found cheap replacements who performed above their pay grade.

Agreed

They've always paid for 1 top CB and 1 top S.
