2020 Pass Offense Predictions

KarlK

Waterboy
How could we not put up elite numbers with the kind of firepower we have and with a guy like Tim Kelly as OC.

Anyways, I’m thinking:

Fuller/Stills/Cobb/Cooks - 4000 receiving yards combined

Johnson & Johnson combine for about 1200

TEs chip in another 1100 as a group

So around 6300 passing yards for Watson next year. Very plausible for an established once in a century talent like Deshaun.

Thoughts? An I undervaluing the TEs maybe?

LOL.... No disrespect, but I am not sure whether you are joking or are being serious. Are you suggesting that Watson is going to shatter Peyton Manning's all-time season passing yards record (5477 yards) by almost 1000 yards?? :hankpalm:

He HAS to be joking. I personally think he was a little low on his numbers estimate....he left at least an additional 1000 yards on the field. :kitten:

The first 3 lines I sorta took seriously, then when I read 1200 receiving between the 2 RBs, I sorta thought he was joking, then when I read 6300 total from Watson.... well, that was it. Either way, starting a new thread for the sake of sarcasm is kinda pointless.... this sarcasm coulda easily fell under the Deshaun Watson thread. :stirpot: :splits:

Well he had me on the first line with a phrase like "with a guy like Tim Kelly as OC". What kind of guy is Tim Kelly. We will soon find out.

If the plan is to truly utilize a spread type of offense to capitalize on Watson's skill set, I'd predict the following:

4,600 Yards and 35 TD

You know the numbers are based on a healthy season from the receivers taking the field. If the speed can stay on the field and OB keeps his nose out of the offense...sky's the limit. Watson could have a lot of fun in this type of offense.

Yardage I agree. But he's going to have forty some TDs.

We're going to avg high 20s in points.
If we are talking COMBINED TDs (passing and rushing), then 40+ is possible, but if we are only talking passing TDs, then low to mid 30s is his ceiling. His passing TDs for the past 2 seasons are 26, and there is no way he is in a position to increase it to 40+ like you are implying.... unless you are saying passing and rushing combined, then I agree.

I don't think it would be out of the realm....it just comes down to health and if the Texans are going to truly open the offense up. Everything is in place for this offense to be as explosive as permitted.

Like I mentioned earlier I’m wondering if he’s projecting 40+ total TDs or just passing. If he means total, it’s possible as he can easily rush for 6-8 TDs. If he just means passing I think that’s way too much. He’s passed for 26 the last 2 seasons and is in no position to hit 40+ all of a sudden. 32 passing and 8 rushing TDs is realistic.

Watson throws for 4350 yards, 35 touchdowns, 12 interceptions, 545 yards rushing, 6 rushing touchdowns and 5 fumbles.

Fuller stays healthy all season: 125 receptions 1435 receiving yards 13 touchdowns.

David Johnson 1356 yards rushing with 10 touchdowns. 400 yards receiving 4 touchdowns

Fells 40 receptions 575 yards with 7 touchdowns.

The Watson projection I agree with 100%. The David Johnson numbers are way too high. I’ll be surprised if he breaks 1100 yards rushing. And Fuller 1400+ yards receiving and 13 TDs? Is that a joke? WAY too high. Between Cooks, Stills, Cobb, Fells, David and Duke Johnson, there’s no way Fells comes close to those numbers.

After week 4 people are probably going to be backing away from the lofty numbers being predicted in this thread. And that’s going to add fuel to the Watson’s not very good narrative.

It wouldn’t surprise me too much if Watson struggles at the beginning of the season. He’s going to be facing some really tough defenses to start the season while working with a new OC and w/o Hopkins. He’s going to have to adjust to new receivers as well, and possibly w/o much time to get acclimated.

I’m expecting similar numbers from Watson from last season, maybe a little less. Because I think there’s going to be a revolving door at the slot and wide positions with guys not currently here filling in for the injured receivers. Which is going to translate to a lot of drops from some unknown receivers.

Fuller : I specifically said if he stays healthy. I’ve also said people can best believe he will be Watson favorite target. I can post two games in which that chemistry was on point, one in which I won pretty big on fan duel.

Bro Carlos Hyde just busted for his first 1000 yards season. The offensive line is pretty good ( especially when healthy) in run pro. David Johnson is much better than Hyde. So it’s very possible he can achieve those stats.

Even if Fuller is his favorite weapon, you are still predicting that Fuller tops DeAndre Hopkins stats even with the added Cobb, Cooks and Johnson. Agree to disagree.

Fullers route running is top notch, he can run ever route on that tree. One example the game against the Falcons.

Cobb’s Still and Cook will get their targets. One will get around 80-90 easily.

You don’t need to keep saying “bro”. And like I say, I respect your opinion. I’m not trying to be a pest, I just don’t think it’s realistic that a guy like Fuller tops stats that DeAndre Hopkins has been producing the past few years.

My three big question marks for this offense.

1. Who will step up as the main red zone target now that Nuk is gone. Our WRs are speed guys, not jump ball types. I think Akins could be that guy. I think Akins should be a lot better than he actually produces.

2. Chemistry between DW and the receivers. Safety blanket, gone. Three new receivers. No OTAs or offseason programs.

3. Who the hell is this Tim Kelly guy? His resume doesn't bode confidence that he'll be awesome. Realistically, he's most likely to be the next George Godsey rather than the next Josh McDaniels.

Please don’t tell what to say or not to say. We’re just having a sports conversation like we’re at the bar chilling sipping on some cold ones. Are you getting nod/irritated? Since you respect my opinion, then why are you continually questioning it? I believe a healthy Fuller can be special.

Lol ok. Agree to disagree. He can be special but not better than DeAndre Hopkins special.

Fuller gets injured, Watson struggles and clashes with Bill O'Brien, O'Brien loses locker room amid 10 game losing streak, fired by week 15, Texans finish 2-14, franchise sold to new owner in 2021, moves to San Diego for new stadium in 2023, San Diego Sharks win Super Bowl 58.

I lot people didn’t think Hopkins was going to be Andre Johnson special. Well he’s surpassed that correct. So just like I tell my kids, “ never say never”.
True. Hopkins never got off to the horrible injury ridden career Fuller has been riding for 4 years now though.

The point of this thread is to point out that DW4's got the weapons to be successful.

I agree about him struggling but for a different reason. He struggles against really good defenses. I cant wait to see Zimmer mess with his head. That should be fun to watch. Great entertainment.

Some really high numbers being tossed about. I think the numbers improve a bit over last year, but no where near the numbers being projected.
Absolutely. My thoughts exactly. Will be some improvement but these numbers being thrown out are extremely overly optimistic.

I don't think hopkins surpassed him.

I think Fuller is very good, but a different type of receiver. I'm not sure he can be a #1, but I hope he can

As odd as it feels at 6 7” I like Fells to be that guy For the EZ 50/50s. Of course depending on packages it really limits you and sends a message but we really don’t have anyone else. FWIW ALL teams are facing no OTAs or off-season programs. As for Kelly....well it’s still the same offense so it’s a wait and see but hopefully there is less of the “WTF did you call that for there??”

While true, this benefits the teams w/ little turnover from last season... like the Ravens & Chiefs. Teams like the Texans & Colts, whom made significant changes to their personnel on offense, may struggle more.

That's going to be Kelly's job....to determine whether they are blockers or actually receiving threats. Darren Fells, Jordan Thomas, Jordan Aikens, and Warring have the ability to be "real" threats in the Red Zone. Does Kelly deploy his weapons or ask them to stay in and help the OL?

As for the numbers being projected for Watson. Based on the moves made this off-season by none other than OB, it appears that the offensive philosophy could be going through a change. Maybe Watson and OB have talked and Watson has told him that his offense isn't working....maybe not. Interesting to see how many veteran speed receivers were added this off-season.....that wouldn't bode well if OB's 6 year offense was going to rule the roost in 2020. He added receiving backs and kept his TE group intact. It's crazy to think that the Texans could move to a Spread like attack that rotates WR's and TE's in to keep defenses off balance. It might be even more special if more No Huddle snaps were incorporated to keep defenses like the Ravens on the field.

The Texans have the pieces to make a Bills type of No Huddle-Up Tempo offense pretty interesting. I believe NFL defenses would be blindsided by such a bold move......especially with no off season to prepare for.

Watson's numbers could be pretty special if this approach is taken with the current talent pool on the roster. If the offense is the same one that's been ran for the previous 6 seasons.....it could be another 2019 for Watson.

The OP was lampooning the pie in the sky talk of this teams offenses potential. No #1 WR. Two 3rd down RBs. A blocking TE that starts combined with 3 guys who have not produced or not played. Top it off with an OC that has never called plays and one of the most conservative HCs in the game.

Right. Some people are expecting injury ridden no. 2&3 type WRs to step up and take the reigns from Hopkins. Realistically I don’t think that’s gonna happen. Duke will be underused and David Johnson will be overused and we will have 3-4 WRs flirting with the 800-1000 yard mark (barring more injuries).

I’d like each of you to stop what you are thinking right now & fall in line with this line of thinking. Brandin Cooks is a #2 type WR. Will Fuller is a #2 type WR.

Forget what you think you know. You are wrong. RGV82 is right.

This team will not have a number 1 receiver in 2020. DeAndre Hopkins is gone & DeShuan Watson will still look to him first.

If you are having trouble figuring out what you think, go back to any of RGV82’s posts & just repeat it. Do not try to think for yourselves. It is a waste of time & you are wrong anyway.

That's probably a sign that they're playing from behind. 10 of the top 12 teams in passing attempts missed the playoffs last year. I'm all for being less predictable when they pass or run. And 2-3 extra passes in the right situations makes a lot sense. But throwing the ball around 40 times a game will get this team nowhere.

Yeah , there's a reason coaches like to run the rock …. and last year was no misnomer in those teams with the most passing attempts playing from behind more often than not.

We saw that a few times with Schaub and the Texans defense that couldn't cover a baby with a blanket.
