Texans Need to Keep an Eye on Roughnecks QB P.J. Walker and Watson compliments him

No, not really seems they start off pretty well (except for Savage, he started bad/fast) - OS might have come closest, as TK likes to point out OS might have been a couple of dropped TD's away from beating NE in NE during the playoffs.

But in general, no, seems the longer the QB plays under OB (or the more of 'the system' OB gives to the QB) the worse they play.

He just may be the... anti-whisperer - As I have said before, think he isn't a bad head coach, but I don't believe he is an offensive genius he may even be a good offensive mind but his gameplans just don't seem to have a rhythm or flow.

Did you listen to the conversation between Wade Smith and Cecil Shorts? Two former players based on their experiences and without hyperbole pointing out some of the reasons the offense struggles. For example, your point about the game plan and the lack of rhythm. No identity, inconsistent targeting of options besides Hopkins, lack of practice. It's a very interesting listen.

I guess that depends - he may have a playbook of terrific plays he has developed over the years and understands WHAT he wants the offense to be, but can't teach it, or call the plays during a game that works during the flow of that particular game.

Hence good offensive mind - bad teacher, coordinator. He still seems to garner a ton of respect around the league, with his employer, etc. in short he talks a brilliant offense, he delivers a crap one.

As a GM/talent evaluator, he also says the right things - we need to get bigger, stronger, taller, as a team - but let's hope he doesn't fall into the Al Davis mold e.g. draft speed and to hell if they can play football.

Good post. I think a great OC not only needs to have an innate feel for the ebb and flow of the game, but also the pulse of his players on game days. On game day, players will come out lethargic, you might need to spend more time getting your QB in rhythm, the opposing team will have a new wrinkle they didn't show on film or flat out defend you differently than you anticipated. As the OC, how quickly can you counter, make the in-game adjustments and communicate the changes to your players?

Regardless of the sport. Not every great player is a great coach or teacher. The same can be said for smart people not being great teachers, communicators or implementers.

PJ is good, but he's also only 5'11'', which hampers him a tad in the NFL. With his success in the XFL, I'm sure someone is going to snatch him away from the Roughnecks though (as a backup, I'm sure). I just hope he doesn't go to one of our division rivals, I'd hate to have to root against him if the time came.

Russel Wilson is only 5'11", now PJ is no Russell Wilson by any means but Seattle is use to dealing with a short QB and his throwing style is a lot like Wilson's. Honestly you could even say he's the XFL's version of Wilson.

I get your point, but if you watch/enjoy college football, I don't really understand feeling that way. This is an overall higher talent pool than college is, and it's not like teams are playing against other teams that are NFL caliber.

I went to my first Roughnecks game Saturday and I was surprised. Had a blast actually. It's more of a college atmosphere than pro to me. I think UofH students must get a discount or something since it's their home stadium because there was a section near mine that seemed full of them. They were chanting and cheering constantly and it added to my enjoyment of the game.
At the prices they're charging it's well worth checking out IMO

I went to my first XFL game this last Saturday too and had a good ol' time .. I secured a family pass (4 tickets, 4 hot dogs, 4 sodas) for $100!!! Leaving the game and not feeling guilty about dropping a grand on tix and concessions and fan gear was a welcome experience!

The tailgate was alot of fun too, the walk on over to the stadium after 'fueling up' and the the walk back to the lots was alot of fun into itself - hoards of Roughneck fans just taking over the streets near UH was pretty fun to be a part of.

Only negative for me was that my cell service was spotty AF and since it was mobile tickets I needed the love of a fellow Houstonian to offer me a hotspot real quick to access the tickets, but other than that it was awesome - highly recommend for anyone who hasnt gone, and Im already making plans to attend the XFL Championship game at TDECU later this month.

- On topic .. PJ is really good, but he isnt an NFL caliber QB. Just isnt. I do love what June Jones has done with the Run & Shoot - installing newer RPO concepts to take advantage of PJ's strengths, it was cool seeing the formations live again.
