Texans Need to Keep an Eye on Roughnecks QB P.J. Walker and Watson compliments him

The Texans do not need a Quarterback who completes under 60% of his passes.

You're right instead we took a QB that completed 67% of his passes in college. I'm not saying that Walker is as good a QB as Watson is but lets not pretend that stats are the end all be all of player ability either. Let Walker throw to Hopkins for a season and I'm pretty sure his completion rating would sky rocket, it certainly did for Watson.

Very rarely does cmp% go up. Drew Brees is possibly the biggest freak in history whos cmp% went up alot from college.

Let’s keep in mind that he’s playing against 4th preseason game talent every week.

That said, he reminds me a lot of Watson with his escapability and extending plays that way.

2. P.J. Walker
  • Biggest strength: Offensive scheme is a perfect fit
  • Biggest weakness: Struggles when forced to get rid of the ball quickly
  • Most-telling stat: Has a league-best 108.5 QB Rating
It's truly tough to nitpick a major flaw in Walker's game at the moment. Sure, there have been some missed passes that he'd probably like to have back, but this offense has been an absolute machine when he's been clicking.
The only "problem" is that the Roughnecks offense has been significantly less efficient when Walker has been forced to get rid of the ball in a hurry:
  • When throwing in less than 2.5 seconds: 63% completion rate (8th), 70.2 QB Rating (11th)
  • When throwing in more than 2.5 seconds: 61% completion rate (2nd), 132.7 QB Rating (1st)
Coach June Jones has put together a wide-open offense that accentuates both Walker's dual-threat ability as well as his willingness to test defenses downfield. Walker has proven to be an incredible game-changing talent when the play breaks down, but improved ability to pick apart defenses with quick passes should result in easier gains for everyone involved.
Look for Walker and company to only get better as long as their offensive line continues to ball out. Currently only Jordan Ta'amu (17%) has been under pressure less than Walker (19%).

You're not wrong but it kind of balances out because he is playing WITH subpar talent as well. I was listening to Pat McAfee talk about when he was on the Colts and he was saying Walker was really good then but because they had Luck they never really used him. I would be at all surprised to see him as at least a backup next year if not a starter. Not for a contender team maybe but for a Dolphins or Redskins yeah I could see it.

PJ Walker.. 43/69 - 62.3%

Better look again..
43/70 61.4

I am only posting the article yay or nay about it. But Mccarron the backup QB is free next season. Then there is QB McGough I don't know much of him. Looking at a backup QB of course Watson is the starter. So if McGough is not the backup QB then the Texans need to address that. Maybe another veteran QB or free agency? idk

The best part, even if the talent is subpar, is that these guys are getting game reps that they otherwise wouldn’t. So yeah, that’s only going to make things better for the NFL, and for a handful of guys who could become starters with this new chance to get reps and learn the game.

LMAOOOO if the Texans signed Walker the Boomers in here would all keel over in unison clutching their chests!!!

And you find it necessary to insult posters over this crap?

we all gotta go someday Pops .. no reason to get grumpy about it. Hit the report button and let the Mods take it down if thats insulting. I've had to read alot worse than that.

BTW insults only have power when you allow them to. Just sayin'. Keep tokin'!!

Is it your position that older guys do not like the direction QB's are heading in (mobile or dual threats as opposed to pocket passers)?

I might go the 'cultural misappropriation' route if I was being honest but basically yes. Guys who loved Stauback and Montana, dont have the same love for the new age QB. Toss in the Kaepernick fiasco and I would say that BLACK QBs specifically are not supported the same way by older generations in comparison to the "younger" guys and more to the point the white QB. (im no spring chicken at 42 BTW and of mixed race). Look at what the dumb superintendent said about Watson when we signed him:

https://www.si.com/nfl/2018/09/22/d...dent-lynn-redden-resigns-after-racist-comment

Remember how Warren Moon and his family were treated by our very own Houstonians??

there has never been a stronger disconnect between generations in our society as there is now and sadly most of that materializes from the political sphere and infiltrates the safe space that should be sport and as much as I would love to believe that there is no racial divide among us here, one visit to the No Spin Zone will give you a better understanding of our brethern among us.

MODERATOR CLARIFICATION: is the word BOOMER on 'out of bounds' term here now?

Fair enough. I myself am 43 and also of mixed race, I also like the new direction of the "modern" quarterback. That said, I think whether they be "mobile threats" or "passing threats", their success I believe is wholly dependent on a staff that can design a strategy to emphasize their QB's strengths and build a team around him that can minimize the issues. I hate that politics have invaded sports to the degree that is has, but such is life today.

The thing about "disconnects" between generations is that no matter how hard one tries to stick to their belief system, tomorrow still comes, the world still turns and we as a people still evolve. Soon we will be the equivalent of the "boomers" and we will have youngsters in here lambasting us for our beliefs as well. This is our reward for surviving and growing old.

The real question is, will the Houston Texans have won a SuperBowl before that times comes? I have to wonder...

That's no way to speak of Thorn .... I mean, it's just not right .... he can't even remember 40 !!!!

My 40s was in the '90s and I remember that quite well. It's the '70s and '80s I have problems with. In fact I remember more from the '60s back than I do from the '70s and '80s. Massive amounts of alcohol and weed will do that to you. Also the '70s and '80s are easily forgettable for a number of reasons. LOL

Really? Why didn't Hoyer (59%), Mallett (53%), Brock (59%) and Savage (57%) see their completion rate sky rocket?

I'm not advocating for, or against, PJ to play in the NFL, but the touchdown he threw in Sunday was freaking brilliant.
D lineman directly in his line of sight with arms raised, PJ adjusted his arm angle mid-throw, dropping down side arm and putting the ball exactly in the receiver's hands as he crossed the back of the end zone. Beautiful pass

That was a thing of beauty for sure.

The Colts cut Walker in order to keep Brian Hoyer. I can tell you right now I'd rather have Walker than Hoyer. I'd rather have Walker than Joe Webb. Hell, I would rather have Walker than the Bill O'Brien Greatest Hits album (Hoyer, Mallett, Osweiler, Savage, Weeden).

That doesn't mean I think he's a starting caliber NFL QB. I do think he's an intriguing project with more upside than the aforementioned and the playing time under June Jones can't hurt.

Well first off I think Walker MIGHT just be a better QB than they were and second they were to busy getting slammed to the ground to throw it accurately. Same reason Watson had a 61% in 17.
You can not teach accuracy. Regardless of circumstances. Good QBs overcome. They will have a game/season off, but they will stick around the same overall. You can see where Mahomes cmp% dipped this year and it matches uo with his injury. Heals up, right back on track

I believe I read somewhere that the XFL ball is smaller than the NFL ball. I guess one would have to ask Brady what effect that has, but something to keep in mind.

You're thinking of the old XFL's ball (manufactered by Spalding)which was just a little bit larger and a little more shaped like a rugby ball. The new XFL's ball have the exact dimensions of the regulation NFL ball. The difference is that the new XFL ball is colored individually, the leather is redder, the pebbling is more distinct (with elevated XFL patterns), and the lacing is much thicker. Beyond that, instead of a circular stripe near both ends, there is a star pattern emenating from each tip of the ball (to make it much easier for a receiver to see)

Nope he's just a closet racist

BTW, Mahomes has been my favorite QB since before he was drafted.

Jamie's Winston was my favorite QB coming out in his draft. So I'm certainly not against having a minority QB. I don't care if the QB of my team is green as long as he's good. But White/ Black/orGreen I'm going to point out his weaknesses and criticize him if he doesn't improve them.

Schaubs weaknesses were certainly a hot topic around these parts, is DW4 off limits because of the color of his skin?

This is the difference between a mature person and an immature person.

Accuracy/Anticipation and you can't scheme around these deficiencies. DW4 had them coming out of college and still has them today. Probably will have them his entire career.

Agreed and here's the thing this isn't the first time the QB role has evolved. 40-50 years ago a QBs job was mainly make a few good throws and hand the ball off to a RB. Throwing for 4k yards was so rare that only the likes of Marino and Namath were doing it. Then the "pocket passer" QBs like Brees, Manning and Brady came along. Now guys like Tannehill do it even on a crappy team and when a QB doesn't do it we start to question if they are really fit to be the QB. The current trend is the dual threat, mobile QB but wait a decade or so when guys like Watson, Mahomes and Jackson are no longer the new hotness and the next "modern" QB comes along, maybe it will be guys who kick the ball to WRs or something. The point is skin color has nothing to do with it, its the nature of the game.

I won't be around for the next set of boomers to bemoan the Texans lack of success, and if the Astros can do it, so can the Texans. But I have little faith in the Texans current regime. I don't have the "fan attitude" with the Texans I had with the Oilers, and I doubt I ever will until the day comes when they are paraded downtown with their trophy. Right now the Texans are still "another Houston team" to me, which means I follow them, root for them to win, but don't get as emotionally involved as I did with the Oilers.

Right now the height of my emotional involvement with the Texans ended with the collapse of the old Kubiak-Schaub-AJ-Foster group. OB drains the fan-fire right out of me.

it already happens! i was the first generation with rap music right, and my rap music makes my sons ears bleed, and his rap music i cant understand a damn thing they are mumbling! These "young whippersnappers" and their laid back, "ill do it later" mentality makes me run up a wall! EVen with that said I dont have a bad day when they call me names LOL .. I laugh when they dont understand my slang, and life is just too short to worry about what other people think. Insults are only given power when you allow them to.

Well you can scheme to a degree, ie Lamar Jackson. Hes night and day when you watch his play after his RPOs are eliminated. Look at him vs the Titans in the playoffs or last year vs I believe the Chargers in the playoffs.

Posting this ad nauseum doesn't make this opinion correct. Let's take a look at Will Fuller's highlights. By all accounts, Fuller is one of the fastest WRs in the NFL. Show us how Watson's accuracy and anticipation deficiencies are impacting Fuller's production.

Watch this video and tell us what is Watson doing wrong in your eyes.

FYI. IF the video doesn't play, there is a Watch on YouTube link in the video.

Apparently you didn't watch the last month of the season.

Like I said 10 good games and 7 bad games isn't a championship formula

Schaubs weaknesses were certainly a hot topic around these parts, is DW4 off limits because of the color of his skin?

I never thought criticizing Watson is off limits. IMHO, there are three groups of posters on this forum.
  1. A small, but vocal group of posters you call the JIC group. Enough said
  2. A small, but vocal group of posters who minimizes any of Watson's accomplishments, maximizes his weaknesses and have made up their mind that he will not be a good QB.
  3. The majority of posters who believe Watson has not reached his ceiling, shows great potential, is still learning, but has to and can improve his game. This group of posters also think O'Brien can do a better job of helping Watson reach his potential by tweaking the offense.
As far as criticizing Watson. The third group of posters do criticize Watson without making it personal. They hear and read that Watson studies hard, is coach-able, intelligent, and hard working. You see him speaking to a room full of reporters, he is breaking down the defensive coverages and explaining what he's seeing on the field. Most reasonable people would agree that at this point, the kid is not at the level of a Tom Brady or Peyton Manning, but they see the potential of what he can become.

For the majority of their existence, the Texans have been in QB purgatory. Now they have a QB, the Group3 posters don't understand why Group1 and Group2 cannot wait to let Watson's career unfold to crown him or run him out of town. In the meantime, this forum is flooded with the vocal Group1 and Group2 posters trolling and antagonizing each other and Group3 having to defend Watson over what they considere Group2's unfair comparisons and expectations.

At some point, the forum just gets unreadable.
