Badboy's 2020 offseason: draft/FA/trades

Now that Atlanta has released outside linebacker Vic Beasley I would be interested in bringing him in for a talk. I think Some of his issue has been the team he has played for. As a now unrestricted free agent I could offer him a one-year make-it-or-break-it deal for a reasonable Contract. He did have nine sacks in 2019.

That could be a big piece before the draft and at a more than affordable contract.

Seth Payne was talking about Beasley the other day, described him as a great athlete. He said his win rate vs OL wasn’t great but he was decent at chasing guys down to pick up sack number. He did mention Adrian Clayborn being intriguing as he didn’t have great sack numbers but he had the fifth highest win rate in the nfl. He’s coming off a 1 yr 2 million dollar contract. He could be a good addition at a good price. I’m of the opinion that we need at least 2 pass rushers and 2 corners, either through FA, the draft or a combo

I see Brennan Scarlett (3.5 sacks and 6 QB hits in 490 snaps) as the weakest link on our defensive front in terms of pass rushing. I would like to see the Texans take a look at one of Shaq Lawson (6.5 sacks & 18 hits in 483 snaps), Emmanuel Ogbah (5.5 sacks & 11 hits in 411 snaps) or Carl Nassib (6 sacks and 11 hits in 630 snaps). I think each of those guys could also play De in passing situations getting Martin on the field as a speed rusher.

How is chasing down a QB for a sack a negative or misleading thing? May not be jump out of your underpants as a knock an OG on his butt and putting QB half way to coronavirus, China but it is a sack. At least Beasley has the speed to chase somebody down. . Do we?

Or any of those available in draft for infinitesimal cost.

He had One Less sack than Beasley 2019 and will cost you quite a bit more
Yannik is the better player. The Texans need a guy that can apply pressure, not just clean up. They have that in Mercilus.

Edit:

Ngakoue and Beasley both had 8 sacks in 2019.

Of course no argument there! But it's going to cost you. Tremendously And I would not be surprised to see him get what Clowney was estimated to be worth last off season. Not from me.

I am also interested in former Falcon and last year New York Jets slot cornerback, Brian Poole. In 2019 He did have minor ankle issue, groin, and a concussion But did play final game. Started 10/14; 58 T2s 4FL; 5 QBhits; 1 FF; 5 pass broken up with one 15 us INT for TD. 79 PFF.

2018 in 9/14 starts; 3 INTs and 3 sacks; 6 PBUs; 74 Ts 4 FL 2 fumble recoveries.

As a rookie 2016 Undrafted free agent he went with the Falcons to the Super Bowl. Out of a thousand snap 754 was as outside cover with 449 as a slot. . His passer rating allowed only 91.2!

Brandon Scherff, Byron Jones and Poole changes draft strategy for me.

I remember Nassib......had him in mocks when he was drafted. Liked him then and I like him now. He could be a nice addition without steamrolling the bank.

Its obviously not a negative to get a sack, however if other players are beating their OL and Beasley is the beneficiary his numbers could be artificially inflated. Atl has Jarret and Clayborn, and both are strong pass rushers. It’s like the opposite of Clowney, he doesn’t have high sack numbers but you have to game plan for him. Beasley had better numbers than Clowney last season but I doubt he keeps DCs up at night. I’m not against bringing him in, just not with a large contract.

Jacob Martin is fast

Prob just click talk but some suggesting Brady may end up in Dallas with Dak being tagged then traded. Brady walking away from PATs and reported $33 million doesn't seem likely. Colts seem like a possibility also with all that cap & would allow pick #13 to go another position to strengthen team.

Tua Tagovailoa's scan shows fractured hip has healed
By Nick Shook

**********************************************************************************
Fans and some teams may get all excited with this news. But it should have only been a headline if his fractured hip had not healed by now. The question regarding his immediate and intermediate future is not dependent on his bone status.............It's his hip labrum and articular cartilage damage, which we know is present by the definition of his injury (posterior wall hip fracture), that does a player in. The bone fracture with it's expected arthritis comes into factor later.

If Dallas wants in on Tom Brady, they have the means to sign him. In my book, you don't let Dak walk unless there's some real strong optimism that Cooper Rush has the ability to step in after Brady. I've always liked Rush and he seems to do his job during his Pre-Season snaps so who knows......maybe Brady can get the Cowboys over the top and mentor Rush at the same time.

some info on running backs in the NFL combine. If we could get JK Dobbins around 2 and then pick up a guy I like from Illinois State James Robinson day three we would be set.

I think I’d prefer to go edge or CB in Rd 2. I just think that those positions are more of a priority.

I agree but my plan is to sign two corners (Poole and Jones) in FA and OLB Beasely is a possibility. If McKinney is traded for a high second round I use that for Zac Baun. Remember hot news when drafted in 2019 Ejiofor returns.

I would add Diggs and Johnson too

Diggs will be gone.

I'm not a big fan of Johnson. But he should be there.

If they get lucky my picks would be Gladney in rd 2 (He's fast as lightening and is a really good cover guy. He may still be there in Rd.2 due to needing to add 10-15 lbs to his slight frame.) Noah I may be there at the end of rd.3 due to inexperience. These 2 guys are two of the fastest CB's in this draft and have great potential for improvement.

If they come out of this draft with 2 great young CB prospects I will be very happy.

What are your thoughts on Dane Jackson? He performed really well in the Senior Bowl.

Raiders ready to offer Brady two year $60 million but NE has $33 on table and would prob make it two fo $66.

One neg is he is 23 YOA
some info you may not have seen https://draftwire.usatoday.com/2020/02/11/2020-nfl-draft-prospects-dane-jackson-pitt-interview/

At 6-feet, 190 pounds, he’s got the size teams are looking for in a cornerback. And the production is there, too, as he now has 25 pass deflections the past two seasons.
So why isn’t Pittsburgh’s Dane Jackson more of a household name among NFL draft pundits?
It could have something to do with Pitt’s record against upper-echelon teams. Pittsburgh has a very respectable 7-3 record and 4-2 conference mark, but those losses have come against Virginia, Penn State and Miami. Meanwhile, the team eked out wins against Ohio, Delaware, Duke, Syracuse, Georgia Tech and North Carolina. Their 10-point wins against Georgia Tech and Ohio represent the team’s largest margins of victory, although Pitt also beat then-No. 15 UCF in overtime.
Still, Jackson has been solid all season. He currently has 33 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 1 interception and 12 passes broken up, giving him a whopping 42 passes deflected for his career, with more games to come. He also has four career INTs.
Jackson is also a good athlete, earning all-state honors in basketball in high school (Cornell HS, Pa.). He averaged 28 points per game and once had a school-record 51 points his senior year.
Pro Football Network NFL draft analyst Nick Farabaugh calls Jackson a “name to watch moving forward,” adding that Jackson “has been the definition of ‘lockdown.’”
Farabaugh points out that Jackson has nearly as many pass deflections as he did last season while seeing fewer targets.
Jackson also got some Twitter love on Saturday from Senior Bowl Director Jim Nagy.

Trading McKinney is cutting off our nose to spite our face.
He's a keeper.

perhaps but we need someone who is a bit more athletic; maybe Kalambayi as we need to start moving out some of our higher cap guys. McKinney is the old school MLB to crunch anything in his target zone except that is no longer good enough as we saw 2019.

Still not sure if Ejiofor is better than McKinney.
McKinney is not a superstar but is still decent.

I like Jackson as a developmental guy. From what I've seen and read he runs hot and cold but is very talented.

Give me Amik Robertson over Jackson in the 4th if Robertson is healthy.

BTW, I'm terrible at evaluating CB's.

Being that the Texans are heading into 2 seasons where the draft has been somewhat taken away from them....then the team must be somewhat cognizant of the fact that they will not be able to address all their needs in the next 2 drafts.

The Texans may have to cut some salaries in order to be flexible with UFA's and in giving their draft direction.

I feel very strongly that the Texans offense is the easiest side of the ball to address with immediate results. 6 moves should do the trick:

1. Sign UFA RG, Brandon Scherff (13-14M PS)
2. Sign UFA WR, Emanuel Sanders (8-9M PS)
3. Sign UFA TE, Darren Fells (3-4M PS)
4. Sign UFA, RB, Carlos Hyde (2-3M PS)
5. Sign UFA QB, AJ McCarron (1.5-2M PS)
6. Draft RD2-25-057: C, Cesar Ruiz / Michigan (If he's still on the board, this is my pick since it helps remove the final weak link.)

**C, Nick Martin and TE, Jordan Aikens could be made available for trade....picks won't be great but it certainly beats a sharp stick to the eye.**

**Texans could market Coutee for a draft pick and re-sign Deandre Carter (250K-350K PS), which wouldn't be a bad move at all in my book.**

Tunsil and Watson would be addressed in 2021 when the CBA and Cap figures are announced. Texans should be in a great position to get both under contract.

Continuity on offense should be the theme for the Texans over the next 5 seasons and with these moves......they could get pretty close with these moves, not to mention they'd be cost effective.

Defense......defense has got a whole slew of problems and they're at each level. No way this gets fixed in 1 off-season but with the moves on offense......maybe the offense scores enough to make life easier on the defense as it transitions. The defense has assets, they a few decent depth players but the 2020 moves and draft have to make some headway.

Bradley Roby is scary in regards to what an inflated market may allow him and his agency to command contract wise. I'm not 100% sold on Roby being worth the money the team may have to give him, nor am I all that excited about his play. Texans should let this guy test the market before making a decision. If he walks, fine. Since the Texans could tag him, they should also be able to receive a 2021 COMP Pick (RD4) if he signs elsewhere.

McKinney could be a solid chip to move based on his cap hit and potential return in regards to pick(s). I think the Texans could keep a lot of money on the table by letting DJ Reader move on to a new team and collect a 2021 RD3 COMP Pick in return.

The Texans could literally utilize the bulk of the 2020 and 2021 draft picks to shore up their defense. But a couple of solid UFA signings could go a long way towards easing the pain of the transition.

My moves on defense:
1. Sign UFA DE, Robert Quinn (11-12M PS)
2. Sign UFA DT, Ndamukong Suh (5-6M PS)
3. Sign UFA CB, James Bradbury (6-8M PS)
4. Sign UFA OLB, Kyler Fackrell (2-3M PS)
5. Sign UFA DT, Brandon Dunn (2-3M PS)
6. Sign UFA SS, Jaleel Adams (1-1.5M PS)
7. Sign UFA FS, Mike Adams (1-1.5M PS)
8. Sign UFA CB, Phillip Gaines (550K-850K PS)
9. Sign UFA ILB, Dylan Cole (550K-850K PS)

Quinn and Suh would be short 2 to 3 year deals with an early out. Bradbury and Fackrell could be longer deals since both are young with plenty of tread on the tires.

**Fackrell would be my massive sleeper signing since he fell from starting for GB to being backup after posting 10.5 sacks in 2018. He's 6-5 @ 245 lbs with outstanding length for the position. The front 7 could be outstanding in regards to getting pressure on the QB.

10. Let DT, Reader move to another team. This would ensure the Texans a 2021 RD3 COMP Pick.
11. Let CB, Roby Move to another team. This should ensure the Texans a 2021 RD4 COMP Pick.
12. Trade ILB, McKinney. The pick return in this trade could be solid as well as the cap savings.

Texans could be really strong in either a 4-3 or 3-4 Defense with these moves. With the defensive front 7 being capable of putting pressure on the QB's again.....it could allow Lonnie Johnson the opportunity to become better especially with Reid and Gipson at S and Bradbury moving to CB1. There would be depth there, not to mention draft picks as well.

Leaving via FA:
1. CB, Roby
2. RB, Miller
3. CB, Joseph
4. QB, Webb
5. OT, Clark
6. DT, Reader

Leaving via Trade:
1. OC, Martin
2. ILB, McKinney
3. RG, Fulton
4. OG, Kelemete
5. TE, Aikens
**6. WR, Coutee**

Gaining via UFA:
1. RG, Brandon Scherff
2. WR, Emanual Sanders
3. DE, Robert Quinn
4. DT, Ndamukong Suh
5. OLB, Kyler Fackrell
6. CB, James Bradbury

3 short term contracts and 3 long term contracts should get the Texans past the 2021 season and back on track for a complete draft in 2022.

I also like Bryce Hall as an option.

Doesn't run well enough for me and will be coming off of an ankle injury. I see Hall as more of a CB/S combo type guy. There's alot of value in that, just not at this time for the Texans. If Hall is there in the 3rd and Noah I is gone, I would consider picking him but he's not high on my radar.

when I was a kid most everybody wanted to be the quarterback. I always wanted to be the guy to break up the pass and tell everyone on defense where to position themselves. Cocky I was at 11 through 13 but was usually correct. I was the quarterback on the defensive side of the ball. Lol. I like when a $10 CB can ruin day of $100 glamour QB. I was always an underdog that no one picked for their team. play harder and longer And you might get chosen. That is still who I am today For good or bad.

Scherff isn't going anywhere and has had injury issues. If you take Scherff off of the board you have the $$$$ to do this. Hopefully the cap goes up enough after the new CBA or the QB salary is exempted from the cap that DW4 (If that's what you want to do) and Tunsil can be extended.

Washington's coach is working on Trent Williams And if he returns I think there's a good chance that scherff will re-sign with the Redskins.

I think the Redskins cap situation is only going to allow them to sign one of these guys. Scherff wants to test the market and I wouldn't blame him. LT's being harder to obtain, I can see why Rivera is talking with Williams ahead of Scherff. Any big contract money should go to retaining TW.

Valentine's Day they cut Josh Norman adding $12.5 & three others for about $3 more. Now have $55 and no problem signing Scherff and Williams. The latter's 2020 cap is $12.5 with 250,000 per game roster so any new deal could begin in 2021 eliminating those per game bonus and making his sign bonus prorated to 3-4 million. I have moved on from Scherff and look to draft a RG like Robert Hunt who can play OT and OG.

Hunt’s draft stock has been moving up. I think he might go in Rd 2. While I like him, I don’t know if I want to draft him with the 57th pick.
