Stop blaming O'Brien and start blaming the ownership and management

House of Pain

Wild Speculator
Or better yet, start blaming them both (with more of the blame going to management/ownership). O'Brien is who he is. It's well documented. We know he isn't going anywhere and he is just being himself. He only has the power in the organization because of the ownership and management allows him to. The real problem is that as fans, we never hold the organization accountable. Bob and Janice and now Cal are the people who can change our head coach and GM, not O'Brien.

I know this is a bit of an oversimplification, but the ownership (or the management that the owners put in place) has made all the decisions that have kept us in mediocrity. Say what you will about Kubiak, but he with Peyton Manning won a SB. Do you think that if we took a chance on Manning (reports said he wanted to come here) we wouldn't have made it further than we did? I know someone is going to tell me that Kubiak didn't want Manning. Well, competent ownership/management would have brought in Manning and told Kubes to make it work or hit the bricks. The ownership and management should have more vision for the organization than the HC.

Upset that we let Lil' Shanny or Vrabel go? This too is a management/ownership problem. Mad that Brian Gaine didn't lock up Clowney or didn't move up for Dillard? This too is on management/ownership.

TL;DR - Blame O'Brien all you want, he has made countless mistakes. He's not held accountable by the power structure above him. Based on what I have seen out of this organization, we could reincarnate Bill Walsh and we would still suck because our membership/ownership group is inept and will always turn sugar into s***.

I’m sorry but I just can’t take the Texans seriously anymore. They are deserving of ridicule. I’d suggest the fans that are still willing to go to the games to wear bags over their heads until the 3rd quarter begins. When the 3rd quarter starts, take off the bags to reveal a clown mask. Because that’s what the Texans front office and ownership is; a bunch of clowns hiding behind the mask of a football team.

I think I am going to follow this guys lead. It may only last a minute, but man do I need a break.

Especially if nothing is going to change with the GM/HC job.

This franchise is in the running for the worst run franchise in the NFL.

Even the Browns voted on what to do with Kitchens and he was fired even though the GM and owner voted to keep him.

It’s ridiculous how this franchise is being ran.
I posted this a week ago. After a week, I couldn’t imagine things getting worse but they have.

We wonder why some posters have disappeared. We think it’s the posters, mods, attitudes, etc.

It’s not. It’s the Texans. They run posters and fans off.

I am going to continue my break. It has been so relaxing and productive.

You guys have fun. I will always be a die hard Texans fan to the bone, but it sure looks easier rooting for the other 31 teams in the NFL.

I've reached my breaking point with this team. I gave up my tickets this. Year. Was kinda pissy when there was a chance to host AFC championship. Up 24-0 wondering how much I would pay to go.

Then sidelined by superior coaching and a young talented qb who has taken the league by storm.

There is no way to hold the texans organization accountable. Or any pro team. Look at bengals and Redskins.

They have empty stadiums and nothing changes

I'll keep my fantasy team. Gives me something to do

The fans in the lower sections at the southwest tunnel can get Cal's attention when he exits the field. He is easily within ear shot.

Sad part is the Texans can shove it with their "afc south champions banners". Yes it is nice but as a fsn it sucks to be be embarrassed when it comes to to the playoffs. I might be bitter but watching the other teams show that put us in another division. We would have been home a long while ago. Besides that we havent improved except still "south champions"

The real problem is that as fans, we never hold the organization accountable.
Since "we" are the "real problem", please elaborate how "we" can "hold the organization accountable".

Last time apathy reigned in Houston we lost our NFL team.

This time, there are too many corporations owning PSLs as investments to get fans to boycott the product.

And as has been said by others on this forum, if everyone that posts in forums and calls talk radio were to suddenly stop supporting the team, I doubt they would even notice our absence. We are an extremely small percentage that cares beyond a small window of entertainment.

The reality is we root for laundry. Players can come and go, but we continue to root for a logo created in a marketing department and surveyed for maximum appeal. We have displaced our natural inclination for tribalism (a vestige of survival genetics) with sports teams affiliations. It's a multi-billion dollar entertainment industry. It is financed by advertising profits and taxpayer funded facilities. It is perpetuated by corporate news organizations and corporate entertainment conglomerates to keep the illusion going, lest the proletariat wake up and realize that those in charge have run off with the money and left our nation in serious generational debt.

The truth is we simply have no power whatsoever to ever hold Houston Texans, Inc. accountable. They do not care. They make money regardless if the team wins or loses.

The reality is that our impact on changing a damn thing is negligible, no different that petitioning Disney to add a character to a Marvel movie.

So good luck with that. I'd rather find something better to do with my time.

Very small percentage. Its the "casual fans" of the Texans (and the NFL) that will continue to support in the way of tix, merch, tailgates, good times, etc. no matter how bad it gets and as long as they hang a vaunted AFCSC banner every few years that IS their Superbowl. No change needed!

Yep, if the Owners sell Zero Tickets they still make money with the all of the other money. Management needs to force BOB to get a GM, an OC. Now the Romeo is gone. They shouldn't have promoted from within. Yea, I am hanging the guy before the team plays a down. 24-0

Yet the Titans played in the division the Texans won and they made it to the AFCCG. The AFC South isn't the cakewalk division it used to be.

There's plenty of blame to go around. Yes, it starts at the top because that's the only place something can really be done about it. But in the game by game, daily stuff that we talk about here, it's the HC/GM at the forefront. He's the one who has more of an impact on what's on the field.

Sure, Cal is the reason he's still here, and that's on him, but Cal is not calling for a fake punt on their own 30 yard line, or burning 2 timeouts on one play, or designing plays that have 2 receivers in the same area on each side of the field with no one in the middle. That's the day to day stuff we knock around on here.

This time, there are too many corporations owning PSLs as investments to get fans to boycott the product.
Quoted and bolded for truth. The at the stadium experience isn't really for the individual fan anymore. Corporations own most of those PSLs. And even for individuals who own PSLs, they HAVE to buy the tickets or they lose that investment. So even when the stadium is half empty, the money is still being made. So fans boycotting isn't really an option, because the NFL has come up with a scam for it not to be.

Probably not going to renew my tickets this coming year. Tired of being left at the altar. Thing is, my two seats won't be on the market for long as the waiting list is huge. Lots of other suckers behind me willing to fork it over to Cal and the gang. Even if 10K tickets holders didn't renew, it wouldn't matter because they'd sell em all within a few days time.
The org wouldn't look at it as, "damn, why is everyone not renewing tickets? Oh, must be because they are not happy with the product, let's do something about it." Nope it won't be that, it will be, "no worries, the waiting list is long and those tickets will be bought up quickly."

On the other hand those casual fans don’t get emotionally invested like hardcore fans do and seem to enjoy their football more. They go to the game, have a tailgate party, drink some beers and eat some hot dogs all while wearing their number 99, 4, 10 or if they are old school 23 jerseys and even when the team loses they can look back and say “man that was a great day”.

Meanwhile we get on these forums and talk about the players, coaches and management worse than our rivals do and snipe at each other like we just insulted each other’s mothers. All while sounding like we not only hate the team but hate football, and each other, all together.

So maybe those “casual fans” are onto something because they sure seem to be happier.

Yep. Stop going to games, get off the season ticket list, THEN we will see change. I swear at least 90% of fans wanted OB gone for a while but they still pay $200 to go to the game. That’s the message they’re sending.“This is okay, and I still support this team.” Cal nor Janice give two shits if this whole city riots, but when you start f’ing with their nest egg, I almost guarantee you they’ll start making changes.

only thing I disagree with - I’m happy with Tytus, and so far looks to be the better pick over Dillard. F the eagles too. Trash ass fan base.

So now BOB is a horrible person?

Have you ever met the man?

Didn't think so.
Outside of coaching, from what I understand he is a pretty good guy actually.
It‘s always been that way, it’s very sad to say.

When Dom Capers was here, everyone thought he was a cool guy. Up until the point where people didn’t like his coaching. Then he became a horrible person. He was mocked, his character disparaged, etc.

When Kubiak arrived, everyone thought he was a cool dude. Then when people didn’t
didn’t like his coaching, he all of a sudden became a horrible person. He was mocked, his character impugned, etc.

In comes O’Brien. He’s a cool dude. Then when people complained about his coaching, all of a sudden he turns into this horrible person. Calling him names, mocking him, etc.

The next coach, it will be the same.

Those guys never turned into horrible people. WE DID!!!!

Being nice to his family is a low bar to clear
Look up his personal life, he has a special needs son and as someone who's wife works with those kind of kids believe me there is nothing "low bar" about it. You are so blinded by hate based on a game and team that you have no investment with beyond that in your own mind that you have started to make it personal with him and you've never even met him. If I was a friend or family member I'd tell you that you need to step away from the Texans man because the way you sound around here at least is actually kind of worrying.

Last time this "hold management accountable" talk started to take root the Oilers left town. Yeahhhh, not for me man. I learned my lesson. You take the good with the bad, and hope that the players are the ones who can work the magic. Unfortunately we are stuck with morons at the ownership and management levels, but ultimately its the players who make it happen, there is enough here, just need to round out the defense.

Never really been a reason given, the rumors have run the gauntlet of it being because he didn't draft Dillard to he didn't get the deal done with Clowney to OB wanted his job so got him fired to it being because of the racial discrimination lawsuit, and yes simply ownership blunder was thrown in at some point. Honestly I doubt we'll ever know the real reason because Texans are actually very good at keeping things in house.

No they aren't. At all. One is a terrible offensive coach and the oth the is still one of the best in the business.
One gets a lead and sits on it. The other runs the ball up the middle all of the time to take time off of the clock and let his defense rest. Plus limits his young QB's mistakes. It's a potato/Potatoe thing their records are very close to the same.

You're an Aggie, there's no way to have this discussion with you, although I think we have finally gotten to the reason of your hate of all things BOB. Simply put, BOB's not Kubiak.

I hear you.

But...

How would you feel if you were a Saints fan, or a Ravens fan? Dominated the regular season & bounced in the WC round, at home.

Yeah, at least they won Super Bowls, but unless they live in Dallas it doesn't count for a whole lot.

Every season is different, every season is new & if you found absolutely no joy watching this team this season, yeah... maybe it is time to move on.

I mean the only fans with anything to be happy about right now are KC & 49er fans & one of them is going to be very upset pretty soon.

In no way am I endorsing Bill O'Brien's tenure, it is what it is. All we can do is hope he gets better.

Aman, as a Ravens fan as well as a Texans fan I was actually more embarrassed by them than I was the Texans. Yeah the Texans had 7 unanswered TDs and in no way is that not sad and pathetic but at the same time no one out there expected them to be good. Ravens had a bye and in their first playoff game they lose to a team that really only made the playoffs because the Texans used that last game as a rest game. League MVP at QB and dominated every team you went up against for the last 10 weeks and you lose to a second year HC and a throw away QB?

At least the Texans can say they fought hard against the Bills and Watson had what maybe the greatest play we see in the playoffs.

Eh I disagree. At least the cowboys fired their hc. Ravens are set up for a long time. Vikings improved in many ways. Seattle has a good QB and smart coach. Titans exceeded all expectations with a young coach. Etc.
