Texans random thought of the day

Similar, although in that case they were only down 3 after the safety.
Actually I thought it was decent tactic.
If we could have gotten the ball back quick and score we tie the game.
Give them the ball back with good field position from the 5 and they likely score so he did give us a chance - turns out if Keke had caught the ball it extends the drive with good chance to score so I was good with the idea.

Tactic was fine

execution WTF???

You let the clock tick down. Then waste a timeout. Then the punter wasted a few seconds going side ways

Heard radio say you could have taken the delay of game and saved the timeout

Taking the safety was the right call.

Calling a TO to make the decision was shameful and makes BOB look like he's in over his head.

From what I remember, if Coutee had caught the dang ball we had a chance to score.
There was enough time on the clock for several plays if done right.

But this team doesn't do right in these situations.

Imagine the Pat's in that situation. Lol

Texans did total opposite.

Again the logic was solid but obviously no one thought of it till the last second. Then it got all muddy.

Oh well. I should expect these things but the never cease to suprise me.

Sure there is a chance OB muffs it up but it also only takes one play to score and their D was tiring and a big play by Coutee right there would have our O fired up.
Its all guesswork now but I was as I said okay with the idea.

Per the folks at EdjSports, where I do some work and am privvy to some information, here’s what the splits look like on that fourth-and-9 play.

–Decision to punt puts the game-winning chance at 7.5%.
–Decision to go for it puts the game-winning chance at 14.5%
–Decision to take a safety puts the game-winning chance at 4.3%.

I cannot understand people saying making it a 7 point game is a good idea. You are then just hoping to tie and send it to ot. It's terrible

I think OB was going for two if we scored, we had no CB's left standing. I like analytics, but actually taking a lot into account and how aggressive Reich is from mid field I liked this safety, just not the TO to get there, better to take the penalty or rush the field and cause a event to get word to Angerer

Everything about the Texans sucks this week.

Since they scored 2 touchdowns, I went down to the friendly neighborhood Jack in the Box to claim my free "Touchdowns for Tacos" MonsterTaco<tm>. No dice. Sumbidges ain't doing that no more. Now you gotta buy a large drink for $2.49 and you get a free JumboJack. Ol' Jack pissed the pot on this promo.

Makes me wanna knock that damn grin right off that bastard. Screw you Jack.

As it turned out, the tactic did work. It only broke down on the interception.
Iow, it accomplished its intended purpose to give us a shot.

It worked if the goal is to be down 7 and get the ball back. They should have tried to get the ball back down 5

I agree with everything else. But this... gotta take the timeout to tell the punter to take the penalty.

I mean Angerer doesn't know. He was told to go out there & kick the ball.

The problem was developing this strategy 35 seconds into the play clock.

in lieu of .. oh I dont know .. TAKE THE DAMN DELAY OF GAME PENALTY AND OHHHHH NOOOOO KICK FROM THE 3 INSTEAD OF THE 6??????

The problem is not how everything turned out, but the captain of the ship being too chicken sht and scary that he needs to ask everyone around him what to do, but then he realizes that he's surrounded himself with "Yes Men" that know less than he does, so he panics and takes stupid timeout after stupid timeout. INVENTING NEW AND CREATIVE WAYS TO LOSE TIMEOUTS in the process! (remember the 2 for 1 timeout loss earlier this year?? LMAO)

Its cool to try and dive deep and try to find nuances that may lead to an informed opinion or psychological reasoning for why people do the things they do, but in some cases, and in this one specifically people are just too conceited to know when they are in over their heads, and the pride is further exasperated when nobody in the room is allowed to question the decision maker. Remember if O'Brien is good at one thing, its getting people fired.

Whoopty Fking Doo on to the Raiders where NO DOUBT we will find another handful of creative ways to fk things up, and guys will invent another set of excuses for O'Brien.

If you punt from the back of the end zone, Indy gets the ball near midfield and only needs 15 yards or so to go up 8. Now you need a TD and 2 to tie.

Taking the safety at least backs up the Colts deep, you still need a TD, but just the kick to tie. Yes, I know that hasn’t been a given but still.

So no problem at all with that strategy. The problem was wasting all that time on the clock, then burning a timeout, then having Anger dance around for another 3 seconds before stepping out. WTF??!

The in game thought process is just so slow, and it’s why they always look like there’s no urgency.

If you just had to burn a TO, you could have done it 34 seconds earlier. Or you could have had that contingency already in the pipeline with, oh, I don’t know, better preparation maybe?

You also could have snapped the ball right out of the end zone and the plays is over in a second.

Now, it ended up not mattering anyway, and it’s not why they lost the game, but it’s just another example of time management, in game management, play design, that just seems really difficult for this coach.

Or even saved more time by having Watson line up and throw the ball out of the back of the EZ. You save even more of the time that it takes to get the punt team on the field. It's almost as if they had never practiced these situations and this really bothers me.

Why would Angerer take a delay of game penalty? He's going out there to punt. He has no communication with O'Brien when BO'b starts running down the field.

He doesn't know Bill just devised a new master plan.

Because proponents of situational football would tell you that you should cover any possibility on any given play? What are these guys too busy to come up with a cool hand signal like, maybe swinging your arms around like a madman would signify "dont punt" .. "kneel" - "dont take a timeout" etc.... are there still things that happen in the NFL that have never happened? thus giving this coaching staff yet another excuse for why it was ok to mismanage time and timeouts?

We practiced those situations not only in HS but in college also, it falls on the shoulders of the special teams coach firstly, but at the end of the day its O'Briens responsibility to have the team as a whole ready.

Let me ask you this, do you think New England would have wasted a timeout in that exact situation? Do you think THAT coaching staff has gone over the probability, and the contingencies associated with such an outcome?

So its just that the punter only has one job, he doesnt have to have field awareness, just shut up and punt. Alrighty then. I appreciate the sarcasm, but my funny bone with this team is broken.

No, they're beyond that already. Someone posted an article saying they have found a loophole in the rulebook to burn a minute and some change off the clock by rejecting penalties.

Meanwhile, our coach can't even handle a proper 2 minute drill. :toropalm:

Preaching to the choir brother. I'm not arguing BO'b is a great coach. I'm arguing they did not plan for that situation. They were not in danger of a delay of game. BO'b called the timeout with six seconds on the play clock. He was racing down the field, trying to beat the snap.

Agreed, things like this is BOB's greatest weakness.

You better believe Watson would've thrown the ball out of the back of the EZ if BB was HC. The punt team would have never gotten on the field.

BB knows the rules better than the NFL does.

BOB doesn't know the rules. He should hire a MIT guy to help him with this on Sunday's. BOB's not willing to get the help he needs. #Hardheadedness

I think there's a signal that would have worked even if it hadn't been discussed before... Just make the same "safety" sign the officials make when they call the penalty. Is there anyone on the field that doesn't know what that means! Of course that may be expecting too much from O'Brien.

The Texans worked out three long snappers on Tuesday. They worked out Andrew DePaola, Wes Farnsworth and Matt Overton. The Texans also worked out former Rice and San Francisco 49ers running back Austin Walter, running back Darius Jackson, wide receivers J.J. Nelson and Eli Rogers and cornerback E.J. Gaines.
Is there any team in the league scrambling for players and spending the future like the Texans are?
I'm beginning to think the Cal may have finally given OB an ultimatum.

I disagree. This stupid take the timeout just to instruct the kicker to take the safety idea was all O’Brien. Anger was going to punt it away and let the defense handle it. Had he done so, we would have had about 30 seconds more left on the clock.

I agree, go back and listen to the press conference when Gaine was fired. BOB said Cal made it very clear what he areas he needed to improve.

I might be in the minority but I have no issue with the trades, signings, and players we’ve added. I love the draft as much as anyone but we’ve added some really good players and they’re young. I’d be pissed if we traded premium picks for guys in their mid 30s. I love Tunsil and Stills and what they bring to the team. I really like Hyde and Johnson (I’d still look to add another RB in the next draft). I love the potential CB group of Roby, Conley, Johnson and Joseph. As a long time Raider fan ( they’re my other team) I was happy we added Conley, I think he’ll fit our defense really well, and he’s young.

I didn’t like the way the Clowney situation was handled and I think Martin was over paid (though he has played well this year - so far), but overall the FOS has done a pretty good job

Great post.
My thoughts exactly.
