Mahomes goes out with a knee injury, what say you doc?

A very unfortunate injury....only one example of why some teams totally avoid QB sneaks. It appears by video that he sustained a lateral dislocation of his patella. Fortunately, it was quickly relocated. This injury always damages patellar stabilizing ligament(s) [and sometimes their attached muscles] stretching and tearing. He will need to undergo MRI to determine if there is any underlying articular cartilage that was damaged/sheared with the displacement movement. MRI will also be looking for potential fracture of the patella or bone fragment connected to the patella ligaments [these findings can be found in 30-40% of dislocations]...........this scenario is less likely but still possible due to the way he walked off the field without significant limp. I wrote about this injury with Trent Williams and said that this injury is very difficult to play through and requires surgery if there is any chance of no further dislocation. Williams tried to tough it out, and as I predicted, during that period, his performance was to say the least tepid.......and he eventually opted for surgery.

If Mahomes has not other significant damage, he could theoretically try to play with a specialized patellar brace..........and this would in no way guarantee no re-dislocation (and with it potentially additional damage)...........and even this type of return to play is unlikely to be wise short of 1 month or longer. [And this is not even taking into consideration that if he tries to return from this injury, he is likely to be chronically dogged by his ankle sprains throughout the remainder of the season.] What I can guarantee is that at one point in time, Mahomes like Williams will have to give up the ghost and have the surgery. This type of surgery can be anywhere from a 6-9 month rehab prior to being able to return to play. If by any miracle, he is able to make it through the season and have his surgery in the offseason, there would be no guarantee that he would be ready for the 2020 season. It may be much smarter for him and/or the team to shut him down early, and give him the best chance that he comes back next season healthy.

Looks to me this injury could have happened regardless the condition of his ankle. Like you said, the QB sneak is a dangerous play.

Am I seeing it wrong or did the instability of his ankle play a major role in this knee injury?

It's hard to tell from the video......the injury can occur from a direct trauma or without direct trauma from a sudden turn of the knee..........the latter could occur if there was not secure footing offered by the opposite ankle/foot.

Will be interesting to see how things go. If Mahomes is out any length of ti.e it could shake up the afc playoff picture

It is being reported that Mahomes' MRI demonstrated that Mahomes did not suffer ligament damage..........that must mean the other major knee ligaments (we know empirically that there has been damage to the medial patellar ligaments. It also is being reported that there was no "significant additional damage." That's a very sketchy report. It appears that he will be seeking additional opinions.

I hear he may miss atleast four weeks counting the bye. If true and the texans win they have a legitimate shot at the number 2 seed and maybe the first seed if they can beat the Patriots and one other team beats them.

Yea pierre at less than 100 probably won't help much. They just have to play rock and wilson on outside with taylor and tell filling in the other spots. Also given the match up Zaire should not play. They are better off with Leonard, walker, okereke, and Ej speed. As for safety willis and Odom probably start with Geathers getting sprinkled back in.

Matt Stafford in his rookie year was the only other QB I could find that has suffered this injury............and he had not been dealing to any other injuries at the time. He suffered the injury in the beginning of week 4...............returned to play week 8 (way too soon) with a patellar knee stabilizer brace and played into week 11, losing the next 3 games with pathetic stats and especially passer ratings (see below)............he then won his next game against a hapless no-defense Browns team.........barely 39-37................he sustained an A/C shoulder separation during that game and tried to play through it in the next 2 games...........until he could no longer play when in addition to the shoulder injury, he added a not unexpected patellar re-dislocation.............after week 13, he finally gave into his predictable fate.................Dec surgery to stabilize his patella. We don't know how the surgery affected his play, if at all the next season, because he missed so many games with repeatedly re-injuring his shoulder until he finally underwent surgical repair of his shoulder in Jan 2011.

As far as the point I am trying to make, with this injury, it is virtually always a matter of pay me (surgery) now or pay me later.........pick your poison, but you will have to sip it at some point........

But doesn't it also depend the number of nerves or ligaments that were damaged?

Nerve or vascular damage is virtually unheard of with patellar dislocation.............it is seen with knee dislocation. All it takes for recurrent patellar dislocation (instability) is the classic isolated damage/tearing/stretching of the patellar ligaments (as opposed to the major knee ligaments like ACL, MCL, etc.). Damage to the undersurface of the patella is also a common concern with this injury..........an injury that leads to chronic knee pain and degenerative bone changes (arthritis).

Will be interesting to see how the chiefs respond as a whole. Will they better team football or slide out of play off picture? Been a bad year to be a qb.

The information I have is that so far Mahomes has had 3 evaluations/opinions..........2 of them have recommended surgery.............NOW..........

This is consistent with what I have suggested in my post.

If he were to get that surgery now , what's the timetable for return ? I'm assuming he would be done for the year ?

Either way , this really shakes up the AFC playoff picture.

I addressed this in my main post re. his patella injury..................return to play following surgery is easily 6-9 months...........definitely season-ender...........but good chance to return next season healthy (patella and ankle).

With his left ankle status and right patella status, if he tries to play through it....................even with the extra rest/rehab of his ankle, he still likely won't be able to step into his throws with his left foot totally normally this season (and risks re-injury).............and now he won't be able to plant his right foot without that constant impact which is a major factor leading to re-dislocation...........despite wearing a right patellar knee brace.

With 2 lower limbs injured/compromised, notwithstanding re-injuries, it opens up a whole world of potential compensatory injuries.

Even with all the above said, what I can't predict is, given the option of surgery now or later, how Mahomes and the Chiefs choose to proceed when a final decision has to be made.

You've made it clear that you believe surgery now is the prudent thing to do. I cant believe the Chiefs would jeopardize Mahomes future like this. If they were to make the playoffs without him and he felt well enough to play I would have to consider playing him, but still probably wouldn't do it.

Glad I never did that!. . I am really concerned about our defensive backs. I know Roby is out for a while, how did you see Joseph performing based on his recent return from hell's injury? Also if I remember correctly Crossen, Gipson and Gaines were injured. Any info as you attain it would be great. Thanks is always

Gaines was afflicted by friendly fire.............his left ankle was bent awkwardly backwards. Xrays are negative. He'll be getting an MRI in the morning.

From the Game thread:
Gipson now out with a back injury.............if your hip mechanics are compromised, your core (which includes the back) is at significant risk for compensatory injury.

Crossen's injury is "undisclosed" as of now.............he has had a history of hamstring and back injury in the past.

As far as Joseph, from the Game thread:
Looks like posterior subluxation/dislocation.
In desperation mode, he is probably going to be seen again sooner than he should.........We will probably see him back with a shoulder harness.............He did not start today, and was used very sparingly.........probably reason why he didn't re-injure his hamstring (he was brought back too soon after this injury.

From the Game thread re. Fuller:

From INJURY THREAD Thursday post:

CloakNNNdagger said:
As far as Fuller, with a calf and oblique issue (both muscle issues), he does not need to be out there Sunday. Calf strains, even grade I are very notorious (even more than hamstrings) for extending with adequate rest/rehab. Obliques are necessary to stretching out for balls and turning to see or catch balls, and pulling them into the body. What is important to know is that there is an association of core problems with calf strains...........the obliques are part of the core. Even if Fuller has sustained a grade I calf strain which is said to take 1-3 weeks before return, a key physical therapy pearl that I learned from seeing many sports related calf strains is when you think the player's calf is ready to return to full speed with no limitations (Fuller is already limited out of the gate), give the healing calf one more week........it's usually the wise choice.

Now undoubtedly a compensatory injury to the hamstring.

Hard to understand how a highly qualified onlooker is able to consistently predict fhe outcome of rushing these players back yet the team and its experts (with hands on access) are seemingly mistified.

Josh Navidi pulled his hamstring for Wales yesterday, he's out of the World Cup semi finals and any potential final immediately. In rugby they know you have to shut the player down to protect his future, even in the world cup which only comes around every 4 years. Its crazy that football is still in the dark ages on this.

There's alot that goes into all that that i don't think most people like us on the outside take into account. non-guaranteed contracts, extremely short seasons, and overall "tough guy" culture of the game all factor into these guys pushing to get back on the field before they should. Really has very little to do with the team docs and trainers. You often here guys out there talking about playing "for their teammates" & that's never more truer than in football. So If there's a chance & way for them to be out there sooner than they should be so that they can contribute to their team, they will take it...even if it means risking more serious injury.

C.R.E.A.M.

Bottom lines and gross profits are what rule the terrain in American sports and sadly that type of thinking permeates to the fanbases when they view a player just like a price tag, easy to dispose of when they dont perform, and when they do, they want to cap the earning potential UNLESS he's some kind of generational player. Sad.

I believe many fans have some misconceptions regarding this subject. There is a difference between being hurt and trying to play through it, and being significantly injured and trying to play through it. Team docs and trainers are supposed to be able to differentiate between the two and proceed accordingly. The routine by most team doctors is to begin evaluating any players with QUESTIONABLE status for the game, at least 1-1 1/2 hours prior to game time. Without the doc clearing the player, the coaches have no say as to whether the player will play or not. If a player is out there that by all logistics shouldn't be, it's ultimately on the team doctor.

Agreed, which why lots of these guys & the injury report throughout the week is a joke. These guys have to have dislocated/broken bones & torn ligaments for team docs to not let them go out there.

The guy has a history of injuries so of course we traded for him. LOL
Maybe I can interject a bit of potentially more encouraging news about our new DB, Gareon Conley.

Conley had no injury history before entering the NFL, but has had what appears to be a long "injury-prone" one since. A severe case of shin splints nixed most of his rookie year, a groin muscle strain June 2018 affected his minicamp but he was back by TC and then July 30 2018 he sustained a hip muscle strain issue and missed 2 weeks TC.

It was after the hip injury that his doctors finally took note that he was dangerously vitamin D deficient. For those that are not aware, such a deficiency is closely associated with bone weakness and pain as well as muscle weakness..........and healing problems for both of those types of tissue. His father said that they had known of this deficiency from back in his youth, but thought that was part of his inability to offer him decent nutrition while growing up. Once this was focused on following the hip injury, he has had no further significant related injuries.

Sept 10 2019......he sustained an entirely freak accident........... he got hit on top of his helmet by Johnathan Abram’s knee and thigh during Monday Night Football. This seemingly compressed the cervical vertebrae of his neck. He didn't move for quite awhile and was carted off to the hospital with his neck immobilized.........symptoms quickly resolved...............and he did not miss any games.

Not much has been said about it in general, but our secondary is so fixed up with injuries that we may as well pack it in for this season. Right?

If they let the injured get the appropriate rest and take advantage through the Bye, I believe there's a decent chance we get a good many of the secondary back relatively functionally intact. Meanwhile we need to compensate the best we can in the next two games.

Should Gipson's back issue keep him from playing?

As Gipson shouldn't have played to begin so soon after a calf and oblique (leading to a compensatory back), he should not be playing this Sunday, and based on all three injuries should use the time through the Bye to try to minimize re-injury.
You suggested he might not should play against the Colts, and now he's probably out longer. Rhetorical question: Why do other teams take the time to heal their walking wounded, while the Texans do not? Do the Texans deserve to be a football franchise?
