State of the O-line

Before last season:

"
O’Brien said this morning on PFT Live that now that he has Watson as his franchise quarterback, he is making significant changes to his offense to make sure it takes advantage of Watson’s unique skills, as well as the skills of star receiver DeAndre Hopkins and other talented players on Houston’s roster.

“It’s a very big project but it’s a lot of fun. It’s fun to get in there with the offensive staff and figure out how we can do things differently than we’ve done in the past. I think you have to be willing to change in this league relative to the talent you have,” O’Brien said. “Deshaun has a unique skill set at the position and we’re looking at his skill set as well as Hopkins, Will Fuller, Lamar Miller, D'Onta Foreman, Ryan Griffin some of the other guys we have on offense and really trying to put it all together.”

So OB scrapped what was working as intended …. and tried to re-invent the wheel.

It gives me a migraine headache thinking down to that level.

So I didn't get to see much of the game aside from the late TD drive and the drive that attempted to seal the game because of work. I saw Scharping was at LG next to Tunsil and Martin. Who played RG and RT? I was so distracted by Deshaun's magic that I didn't see.

The OL shuffling is just more evidence OBrien has no idea what he's doing

Agreed. I thought last weeks line did a good job in pass pro & a great job in the run game. I was looking forward to see that line jell a bit.

I don't really understand the new lineup this week. Did RJ disappoint?

They should have been thinking tonight's lineup the minute they traded for Tunsil. & benching Henderson should have been enough of an excuse to make it happen.

I can't imagine what could have happened in practice (because RJ played well) that would make them make this move now.

Is Roderick Johnson hurt?

It's bigger more athletic and younger , You might as well go with the future .
I agree and have been saying for months it's time to get rid of Henderson and Kelemete. I'm hoping that O'Brien leaves the rookies where they are right now and allow them to get use to guy(s) next to them. I still want to see Fulton at Center over Martin perhaps with Roderick Johnson at Right Guard. Johnson is another one that's been playing all over.

That is my guess on RJ.

Curious to see what the film and grades are for today.

And looks like Seantrel is completely out of the rotation despite being named opening day starter last two years

O'Brien doesn't and I don't like him but to be fair with Kelemete out hurt somebody has to play left guard. They gambled on Henderson being able to get one or two more average years in but they missed on that. Perhaps he does a Kalil and leaves if Titus can handle. Johnson could be the versatile player, lol. I'd rather a new, young player be added than keep old vets. Now if we could just get rid of 34 million dollar man Martin. Trade anyone?

If RJ was hurt then today's lineup does make sense.

But I still think it was dumb to use the majority of OT training camp snaps on Kalil and Seantrel.

If Tytus can play RT that would be nice. Have kelemente/scharp handle LG

And Martin at center was average at best. Fulton IMO was much better at center but IF he slides to the left we only have a rookie Johnson to start RG. Hard enough with two rookies and new comer tunsil. I would do just that and go with the three rookies but I don't see O'Brien agreeing. He does not like rookies to start as we know.

I think the OL was pretty solid today … despite the sacks. In that second half that offense was something we haven't seen since Watson's rookie year.

Oh , and we have TE sighting ?!

All in all, I think the OL is still a mixed bag. They still had their usual sacks and bad plays, but the amount of plays where Watson isn't running for his life seemed to go up, and a few of those it was quite noticeable he had all the time in the world. I'd say the OL is improving week by week but still has a long ways to go. Especially considering where it was last year.

In my opinion Roderick Johnson has the quick feet and long arms needed to be a left tackle. He was the reason Cameron Erving was moved from left tackle to Center for Florida. I think with some increase weight and strength and experience in the NFL he could be a future left tackle starter. IIRC, he has gone from 298 in college to about 311/ 315 with Texans. Cushing needs to work with him and probably is.

Yes and Titus Howard is a better right tackle than left tackle and better there than Johnson IMO.

I've agreed with you on everything .... but I'm still hung up on "what Rod could be". Of course, that just makes him a good "prospect" .... which means he is yet to prove it ! He really does show rare movement skills and tenacity for a 6'6" - 300+lb. man. I watched an interview with him this week ....he comes across as very genteel, and intelligent .... almost humble ! I've just got to pull for him !

Kalil was held out a lot of training camp. Majority of snaps went elsewhere.

Agreed on Henderson

The OL is looking good in pass pro. Would like to see improvement in the run game.
Martin is the week link there. He doesn’t get any push and he makes bad choices, seemingly he’s drawn to double team like a bug drawn to a light. There were times today where he immediately went to the double team allowing a defender to run right past him. He doesn’t seam to be able to recover off a double team once he’s engaged. I noticed this on more than one occasion. I’m going to watch the game again and focus on him. See if my impressions have merit.

I see this as a positive as the Run game has been where we did better. Give these guys a week or two in same spots and see if we don't improve in both pass and run blocking.
Don’t tell us, tell Buttchin. He’s the one that can’t make up his mind. How do you get three games into the regular season and still can’t make your mind up about the lineup?

Its why I'm looking for to the Ravens vs Chiefs game almost more than the Texans game, lets see what KC and Baltimore really have at center.

Did you watch that game ? …. Score was close but Jackson didn't put up video game numbers against a decent defense like he had against the two prior teams with atrocious defenses.

22/43 (51.1%) for 267 , no TD's and no INT's and as many sacks as he had in both of the other games combined.

That's a far cry from the video game numbers he had in the first two weeks a 71.9% completion rate 300 ypg and multiple TD's in each.

I wasn't buying it …. still don't buy it.

I'm not buying it either, but it appears that Harbaugh has built a good offense utilizing his strengths

3 weeks 3 starting olines will we get 4 ?

Best pass blocking we've seen all …. in a couple years. Took a step back in run blocking.

If they'd move Martin to the bench …. and play Fulton at Center , they can get their best 5 guys on the field.
Tunsil
Scharping
Fulton
Howard
Johnson

But hey , we cant expect OB to make any sense.

I saw what Watson can do when he gets some protection. Considering the minimum amount of time the OL has had time to gel as a unit, of course there is room for improvement.

But Jesus H. Christ, all you “glass half empties” are some
whiny little bitches.

And your point? I never said Jackson was going to have as good a game as the other two or even that he was going to have a good game at all. I said let’s see what KC and Baltimore really have at center because it was Jackson’s first game against a good team and Mahomes first game in his sophomore year against a great defense.

Not sure why you felt the need to come here and quote a post I made way before the game, and frankly had forgotten about. Either you don’t like anybody saying anything good about Jackson or you don’t like anybody questioning Mahomes greatness. Either way congratulations, I suppose?

I was asking where you were on Jackson after that showing against a decent defense in response to your post below and our earlier conversation on Jackson.

Prior to that the rest of the world was crowning Jackson the second coming of Joe Namath ….

I never mentioned Mahomes. Don't know why you are trippin'

Ok my mistake, didn’t read it as a real question when I read it. I apologize for that.

As to where I am I still think there is more there and he’s not hit his ceiling yet. This was his first game of the year against a quality team and yeah now we will see if he can learn from it or let it blow him up. Mahomes seems to have learned from the loss to NE while on the other side of the coin Newton never got over the loss to Denver. We’ll see which one Jackson is more like.

Where Jackson does have one advantage is Ravens always have a good defense and I think that kept the score close tonight. KC lives and dies by Mahomes, Baltimore just needs Jackson to be good, not even as good as Watson, just good. I think they will have success and I think Jackson will be the next Philip Rivers, great QB with lots of achievements to his name but never quite at the same level as the all time greats.

Best iteration of the current offensive line talent.

Tunsil - Sharping - Martin - Fulton - Howard

they line up complimenting players next to each other so that an individuals weakness could be overshadowed by his teammate next to him.

Howard is a tackle. Not a guard. He looked light on his feet and played the edge great. Best game of the year for him. Same can be said for Sharping, having him play and learn next to Tunsil is super smart. Tunsil can guide/tutor him having started his career at that position.

This unit gives me hope.

as I posted earlier tonight.

To be fair? Hell Kelemete only started LG last week when Howard was nixed at the last minute. Howard was the starting LG. Did Howard even practice at RT at all in the off-season and preseason? I think it’s fair to say the Handling of the OL this year alone has been sketchy at best. There has been Way to many head scratching moves.

I’m fine with these moves in fact I think this is the the right lineup to go forward with. Well except Martin. That’s another head scratcher. I agree with you about him.
