FIRE O'BRIEN NOW!!!

Lol, outside of the 1st couple of drives where he and the entire o-line struggled, he did play fairly solid imo. He was slow in picking up exactly 1 damn stunt ...but again, that was in those first couple of drives where they all had communication issues.

Seth Payne is literally largely echoing my sentiments about Martin and the o-line’s play in the game on the radio as I type this. Said there was much more cohesion in this game than he saw at any point last year. Guys knew their assignments and got there. He Writes off a few of the sacks due to the newness of Tunsil. He did mention Henderson’s play as a little “concerning”, but not outright bad as you’re asserting.

Lol, think it’s u who needs to stop watching games.

Seantrel is benched for Rodrick. So I guess BOB/Devlin disagrees with your assessment as well.

He just left too much time on the clock for Brees on Monday night.
Not going to hold that against OB, in that situation you don't want to get cute and no score and/or run out of time. The loss falls squarely on the defense and particularly on Colvin who totally screwed up his assignment on the play that put them in position for the game winning field goal. If he would of played it like the other DBs on the filed, that should have been an incomplete pass.

Maybe it’s both of these things. Poor defensive play and clock management. I have seen coaches manage the clock better and O’Brien is not one of them.

The team is stuck in limbo for the moment. To much talent to have a loosing season and the wrong coach to have in the playoffs. I don’t think the new owner cares about the team. Didn’t see or hear anything from him watching the game.. oh well

I’m sure this has been discussed but I’m just now getting back from the game. Does O’Brien think time-outs can be carried over to the 2nd half?

What miserably inept clock management at the end of the half.

Agreed. See the "special dedication" thread...

Evidently OB is OK with DW4 taking the hits he's taking. I would say designing plays with shorter routes would be a good start since the Texans can't seem to figure out who their best OL are. Benching Henderson was a good start. Now bench Martin, move Fulton to C and start Scharpie at RT.

HOUSTON -- On Monday night in New Orleans, quarterback Deshaun Watson showed just how dangerous he and the Houston Texans offense can be when he led the Texans 75 yards in 13 seconds with his team trailing by six points with less than a minute left.

And on that touchdown pass, he showed how dangerous his playing style -- coupled with a lack of protection -- can be.

Bringing The Heat

Texans QB Deshaun Watson was pressured (sacked or put under duress) on 45% (17 of 38) of his dropbacks in Week 1. Last season, Watson was pressured on a league-high 41% of his dropbacks. Watson was 3 of 9 when pressured for the game, but that also includes his last pass of the game: a 37-yard go-ahead TD to Kenny Stills.
ESPN Stats & Information

The play after Watson threw a 38-yard pass to DeAndre Hopkins with 50 seconds left, he tossed a 37-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Stills to put the Texans ahead by one after the extra point. Watson was hit hard as he threw the ball.

“I was on my back, on my side, and I kind of peeked and I saw him catch it,” Watson said.

Watson did everything he could to lead the Texans to a victory -- but after getting the ball back with 37 seconds left, the Saints advanced just far enough down the field to kick a 58-yard field goal to win 30-28. Although the Texans lost, Watson showed again that he is capable of putting a team on his back and in a position to win.

"The throw he made to Kenny [Stills] at the end of the game there, the touchdown throw, is really kind of what it's all about, being a great quarterback in this league," Texans coach Bill O'Brien said. "To hang in there and take a hit and to deliver that ball with the accuracy that he delivered it -- that one play kind of says it all about the guy.

“When you have a guy like that, you have confidence in any play that you call that he's going to be able to make that play work."

When you have a quarterback like Watson, O’Brien said, “we are never out of it.”

“Even when things aren’t going so good, if we can keep things within range, we are in every game,” O’Brien said. “That is what Deshaun Watson gives us. He is a great football player.”

Watson accounted for all four of the Texans’ touchdowns, completing 20 of 30 passes for 268 yards, with three passing touchdowns and an interception. He also had four carries for 40 yards and a touchdown.

Laremy Tunsil shortly before the start of the season, but the unit still struggled in the season opener.

Last season, Watson played in all 16 games, but he had to play through several serious injuries and in the middle of the season had to take a bus from Houston to Jacksonville, Florida, for a game against the Jaguars because of injuries to his lungs and ribs. Watson also has torn the ACL in both knees -- his left in college and his right during his rookie season.

If the Texans want to see this kind of performance from Watson all season -- and they might need to depend on it, given the way the defense played in the second half to blow a 14-3 lead -- they need to make sure Watson stays upright.

“He has a way of making plays work that you really wouldn't think the play would work ... but he keeps the play alive and sometimes that means he takes a hit," O'Brien said. "We have to try to find that fine line where maybe the ball can come out a little bit quicker [or] we can design a better play.

“At the end of the day, he took the hit on that touchdown to Stills ... and delivered a strike, and at that point and time that could've been a game-winning touchdown. He's going to take those types of hits sometimes just because of the way he plays. That's his playing style.”

With an entirely healthy WR group, better offensive line play, what’s the excuse this time? Same special ed play calls, terrible clock management, same inability to adjust. How anyone can still defend this pathetic joke of a HC is beyond comprehension!

Humberto is expected to strengthen into a hurricane.

Honestly I can understand what BO'b is going through. Carlos Hyde & Duke Johnson are totally screwing up his game plan. Consistently being in 3rd & short situations is a new wrinkle BO'b has to figure out.

Give him about 8 weeks & he'll have it worked out.

With O'Brien I think it is what it is. I have zero confidence that he will grow as a coach with the Texans. The Texans situational football is some of the worse that I have ever witnessed. I can't fathom that all the coaches on this staff are completely blind to what transpires. Are they not speaking up? Is OB too stubborn to listen or do the coaches keep quiet for fear of reprisal? Outside of being the owner, he is at the apex of this team. Who can challenge him? Cal probably doesn't have the football operations pedigree to question OB's decision making. If this team doesn't make the AFCCG, then Cal needs to summon his inner Dean Spanos.

If they say anything they get fired. That's why he's now hiring grad student assistants and chaplains.

I don't wonder at all as to why no one seems to be open …. OB runs 4 wide , two on each side and on both sides , both guys will be outside the numbers , no one attacking the middle of the field.

What's a TE ?

I really hate this offense .... Its just a comedy of errors.

That "Drive" to start the second half …. typical of an OB coached team. False start on the first play out of the half. A bungled snap. Fumble on the next snap …. ugh.

The running game is a pleasant surprise …. hope they can keep that kind of production up all year.

It's not sustainable. The only adjustment O'Brien knows is running Hyde up the middle as much as possible or doing a screen pass

I’m done with OB. Done done like a steak in the White House. This team wins despite its GM/HC/OC. I really want to like the guy and have given him years but the facts are he’s a pompous ass and his offense is consistently inconsistent. That’s a coaching problem. Which of the hats is responsible for that? The GM needs to fire the HC, OC, and himself. This team is as ill prepared as the HC is before halftime with a pocket full of timeouts. Inexcusable at this stage.

He needs to quit calling plays, there’s too much to focus on during the game. I think his ego causes him to micromanage and it’s hurting our progress as a team

If Cal doesn't possess the nads to make the tough calls........maybe it's time to put a call into Fertitta and Crane about buying this sad sack of an organization as a partnership.

I wonder if the Jags would take 2022 first round as partial payment on Jalen Ramsey after today's "disagreement"with Marone? Dang, there I go again!
Do you really think a O'Brien/Ramsey relationship would go well?

Man I just said this on my other post........ you reading my mind...... this guy is an idiot

I believe the buyout for Lincoln Riley out of Oklahoma is only $4.6M..

Just have to kind of ironically root for the Cowboys..

He's been an offensive coordinator for two games.

The entirety of his coaching experience before that was to be a qb coach for one other season.

What do y’all think of Kellen Moore? Too green?
I think Moore is a guy to keep an eye on.
I really liked his smart out of Boise St.
But his being short and not having a strong arm prevented him from having a career in the NFL.
I had studied him like I studied Keenum.
Also, Moore isn't as mobile as Keenum.
But he excelled in the short and medium game because of his smart (understanding the defense.)
I've always thought that these two guys would have a career in coaching.

He seemingly was a good mentor to Prescott when he was a backup QB in Dallas in 2016-17.

Garrett saw that.

I always like fast-riser.

Also, there must be a reason for the Cowboys to keep him despite his injuries and all.

Worth digging into, IMO.

It seems like his experience of the quick, short game at Boise is finding a good place in the NFL lately.

I was really surprised when I contrasted Prescott's game in college and his rookie year in the NFL.
(I had studied Prescott in college, too.
I had him as the no. 4 QB.)

I thought they did a good job developing Prescott.
Quick, short game in his rookie year.
When the first two reads weren't there, take off with the ball and protect yourself.

Guess it’s not enough that he traded for both.

Do you really think a O'Brien/Ramsey relationship would go well?
If Stills and Cal can get along maybe O'Brien and Ramsey can. Let's remember that Ramsey is well liked by his coworkers and should have same in Houston. O'Brien recently said he has backs of his players to seemingly be a "players coach". As much as I doubt that, trading for Jalen would do much to improve fans view of him after the disaster trade of Clowney.

Keenum has always said his plan is to coach when his playing career is over. He comes from a coaching family so its in his blood. Moore has been really impressive in his first two games calling plays. If he keeps this up and Prescott keeps playing like he has so far someone is coming after him at seasons end.

Heard O'Brian on his radio show today talking about the time out he took at the end of the game. He said it was great time management & that nobody is talking about it. I agree it was a good move.

He completely ignored the no time out called at the end of the first half.

I think the media coverage is getting to him. He sounded really put out about the whole thing.

Agreed. See the "special dedication" thread...

This is driving me crazy. You want to slow down a lot of blitzing by the LBs? Start hitting the TEs over the middle. Start putting the slot in motion and throw quick strikes over the middle. OBs play calling is the problem. His play calling Encourages DCs to blitz and run lots of stunts and delayed blitzes. He’s miss managing this offense so bad. All these weapons aren’t being used to their strengths. He needs to find ways to get them open quickly and get them the ball with space to run. You hardly ever see us using motion or picks. Where’s the quick timing routes like quick slants or short curls inside by the TE behind blitzing LBs?

Everything seems slow developing and calls for our players to beat there man on their own. The scheme is horrible. OB and RAC both make the players fit their scheme instead of designing a scheme that fits the players. The game has passed RAC and OB was never in it. That **** just doesn’t work anymore.

Yer right about OB.

Yer Wrong about RAC. His schemes are usually spot on - its the execution of those schemes that are lacking more often than not. That and letting all the talent he's had get away.

I cant recall the last time I saw an RB screen …. its like they tore that page out of the playbook and burned it. It is the "rush beater". You invite the rushers to commit …. and now your back is in space with DB's trying to stop him.

Seems they run a lot of plays where multiple routes terminate outside the numbers on the same side of the field .... That's counter to everything I've ever been taught - You want to spread the defenders out , not bring them into proximity.

Fuller …. go take the top off of the defense - 7,8,9 route (corner , go , post) every time! Instead you have him running 6,4,3 in's outs and hooks … on top of someone else.

No picks ? no Rubs ? …. Just beat your guy!

How about creating a mismatch with a route combination …. new concept ?! ugh.

Where's the relief valve in the flat ?? Oh …. He's blocking cause the rest of the routes take all day, nevermind.

What is a TE ? What have we spent multiple high draft choices on them for if you don't use them for anything other than a poor excuse for a 3rd OT ?

Ob's only tool is a hammer ….

Akins was open multiple times down the seam and Watson only found him once. This is for the why don't they use the TE crowd.

Truth is Watson had a very avg game at best.

Last year RAC had all his talent and we still got chewed up by any half way decent team. Also if the players can't execute the scheme then come up with a new scheme and stop trying to fit a square peg in a round hole, isn't that one of the big issues with BoB and the offense. The only reason we were in that Colts game was because the defense couldn't stop Philly from doing pretty much whatever they wanted. Even in the Saints game lets say Colvin had not played his man from 4 yards away and was right on top of him, he still had already been beat 8 out of 9 times in that game and Brees knew exactly who he was going to throw to before the play even started so why run that risk? If we are going to clean house, and I'm thinking now we should, then lets not do a half ass job and clean it all the way.
