State of the O-line

If the Texans would wise up and put Fulton at C and line up Tunsil Howard Fulton Scharpie R.Johnson, I think the protection would get a lot better.

I'm not overly concerned with Howard getting schooled a bit today. Jax's defense is going to do that to lots of teams this year.

It seemed like OB and RAC were determined to lose this game but a few players wouldn't let them. So glad I didn't have to sit through OT.

No chance Martin gets benched after just signing that ridiculous extension.

I thought protection took a step in the right direction. Two sacks & a bad snap.

Blitz recognition looks to be more of a problem than blitz pickup.

Screw Bill O'Brien.

But moving in the right direction.

I didn't get to watch the game because I was working. Did Howard show any flashes that he might be a guy capable of being a quality starter someday? Going up against Campbell is a tough welcome to the NFL debut.

He's a rookie and it showed.

Yep, he's a rookie, a small school one and a reach to be taken in the first round.

Can't form any conclusions other than Kelemente should start.

Rookies need time. He needs to be developed properly.

Kelemente should not start. Howard will not get better riding the bench.

Lots of guys get better on the bench. Watson has taken way too many hits.

With Tytus doing his Jean-Claude Van Damme impression he needs some learning time

I don't think Kelemete is that much better than a rookie doing rookie things. If Watson's going to take the hits anyway, I'd rather see Howard getting valuable experience, and hopefully learning and getting better each week. Already know what Kelemete gives you.

I'm just throwing this out there. But I don't think KDog wants Howard to succeed. Especially not this early. If Howard rides the bench all season it gives him another point to argue.

Only two sacks today if you don't count the bad snap he fell on.

Not sure how you can say I don't want him. To succeed. I've said many times he looks like a solid prospect.

But he will protect Watson worse than Kelemente who at least is an average veteran. That's the priority. Dillard is on the bench for the eagles and I think they know what they're doing

Lol always using weird points to make your argument. Our OL doesn’t look like theirs. Howard is equal to Kelemente. Start Howard and let him get better

Watson was sacked four times today, for the 8th game in a row, he was sacked 4+ times.

I don't understand why people keep overrating rookies. Even the best rookies struggle. This is asking for failure like with Rankin last year.

Kelemente is nothing special but he is a solid vet who will be better until Tytus develops. Tytus obviously has far more upside and our goal should be to make him reach that.

How does Howard develop if he’s not getting real game reps? Get them now, learn the game, get things slowing down so that he’s not a rookie again next year.

Isn't that how a lot of rookies develop? It's not the only way but they can. Practice, watching tape, getting coached, seeing how the vets do it, etc

A little better than last week …. But still not good enough.

Good enough will not happen until OB admits he screwed the pooch by extending Martin with a ridiculous contract......making him a starter come heck or high water. Stupid arse!!!!

Put the kids in and let them grow.

LT- Tunsil
LG- Howard
OC- Fulton
RG- Scharping
RT- Johnson

What we would see is progression with each game and hopefully by seasons end.......the Texans finally having an OL that can protect Watson and create a running game.

Not yet but I think even more concerning is how Watson gets hit on just about every pass play even if there isn't a sack.

Actually even more concerning

Tunsil- first rounder
Howard- first rounder
Martin- second rounder and second highest paid C
Fulton- free agent $7.5m per year
Scharping- second rounder

Previously used a second rounder on xsf and a third rounder on rankin. Spent good money on Jeff Allen.

And the OL still sucks!

Obrien has not developed a single guy on that line. The best guys, tunsil and Fulton, developed elsewhere

Updated PFF totals..

LT - Laremy Tunsil - 127 snaps - 2 penalties - 2 sacks - 61.9 grade

LG - Senio Kelemete - 64 - 0 - 1 - 73.4
LG - Tytus Howard - 64 - 2 - 0 - 40.3

C - Nick Martin - 128 - 0 - 0 - 70.0

RG - Zach Fulton - 128 - 0 - 0 - 59.1

RT - Seantrel Henderson - 65 - 2 - 0 - 41.7

ST - Roderick Johnson - 64 - 0 - 1 - 60.3

Overall - 6 - 4 - 58.1 grade

Wade Smith is on the radio right now killing John Lopez and his trash PFF stats regarding the o-line. Basically saying that he like most other pros don’t trust PFF...or trust them very little. he also said he reviewed the tape, o-line was only really responsible for 1 of those sacks...1 b/c he didn’t get rid of the ball when he should’ve...ive looked at it...he definitely had a hot read he could’ve went to. The other shouldn’t even be considered a sack, but a fumble....

Also stated how bloated the qb hits category is...and a lot of the time it doesn’t have a whole lot to do with the o-line...

I think it should be:

Tunsil
Kelemente
Martin
Fulton
Roderick

This guys are more experienced and we can develop Howard/Scharping behind them. Honestly I would have cut Seantrel and continued to develop Rankin as well.

So you'd have Duke Johnson as the only running back worth trotting out?

Maybe the Chiefs don't want to trade for Henderson?

Ah, now I see what you're saying. Forgot Rankin got traded for Hyde. Probably would have not done that trade and just cut Seantrel. RBs are much more replaceable and Hyde is a FA after this year. He's started well but he's never really been consistently good

I think the offensive line showed much improvement over week 1. Pass protection was ok. But the run blocking... lots of holes at the LOS. Need to work on reaching the 2nd level.

Is this the guy who told you Henderson had a solid game week 1?

I take PFF with a grain of salt basically because I don’t know how it is they come up with their grades. I mean, with passer rating, for example, there’s a number that you come up with, but at least I know the numbers that are plugged into the formula. So when a QB has a good passer rating, I know those numbers that are used have to be good. That still doesn’t tell the whole story, of course, but it does help tell the story.

Not the case when grading guys that don’t have traditional stats, like OL.

That said, I didn’t need a bad PFF grade on Henderson to know he had a bad game. I saw that with my eyeballs. They agreed with their grade of him and apparently someone on the Texans did too because he was catching splinters yesterday.

But back to PFF grades, does somebody else have a better way to grade than them? Serious question.

Footballs outsiders does one but it's by unit not by individual player.

So far they rank the Texans 4th in run blocking and last in pass blocking (week 2 not included yet)

The 4 sacks we gave up, has anyone reviewed them, yet?

Still waiting for the all-22 to be posted, but went ahead and checked the broadcast replay again.

1. Jags overloaded the right side. Rodrick elected to take the inside guy and let the outside guy go (I assume this was the right decision). Jack blitzed from his regular LB position, so would have been tough to make this read pre-snap. TBH, I have no idea who’s at fault here, was a good executed blitz by Jax. My guess is DW4 has to do a better read here and somehow make the free blitzer miss him, which he actually almost does. Another part of the problem is Jack blows up Rodrick, pushing him back pretty far, eliminating any chance for DW to escape. My uneducated guess is giving 1/3 blame on DW, he needs to make a better read there. Another 1/3 to Rodrick for getting blown up by Jack. Then another 1/3 to Jags for nice blitz design.

2. Jags blitzed 6. My guess is Duke makes bad read and doesn’t pick up blitzing DB, instead he helps Tunsil with the edge rusher. The DB gets free shot at DW. Tytus also got pushed back into pocket pretty bad, basically making it impossible for DW to escape. I'm going with 3/4 blame to Duke, the other quarter to Tytus.

3. I have no clue why this was considered a sack? DW4 actually gains at least a half-yard before he goes out of bounds. At the same time, no clue why if the QB runs out of bounds w/ no gain is still considered a sack?

4. Bad snap by Martin. Plain & simple. 100% blame on our highly paid center.

PFF states 1 sack was caused by the offensive line and 3 were on Watson.

Interesting

My guess is the 4th sack was caused by the OL (or just Nick Martin).

The third sack shouldn't have been considered a sack.

I can see giving blame on the first sack to DW4, but have to at least give partial blame to Rodrick Johnson. He got blown up by Myles Jack!

The second sack, I have no clue how DW4 gets the blame there? Jags rush 6 and Duke decides to help Tunsil, allowing a DB clear path to the QB?
