I’d get on board with Suh if Clowney decides not to show up when it’s time to play. But don’t see him as a good fit when JJ/Clowney are the guys who freelance. And not sure Suh would be disciplined/unselfish enough to fill his role like Mercilus does when both Watt and Clowney are healthy. It’s not as simple as insert Suh then we got Watt/Clowney/Suh wreaking havoc. Can only have so many freelancers on the defense. And I think we’d all agree that Watt or Clowney > Suh
Get the best players and let the coaches deal with how to use them has always been my philosophy.

He's a great talent to be sure but this was my concern as well. He'd be fun to have in obvious passing downs. Otherwise, I can't imagine any kind of gap integrity. To many free Lancers. Also, is he fit for a 3 man front? He'd be more suited as an under tackle in a 4-3.

Disagree that Suh would be the best player for the role he'd inherit with healthy Watt/Clowney. I do however think he'd become an on and off field liability if forced to fulfill an unsexy role on the defense like Mercilus has done for the team. The juice is not worth the squeeze (unless Clowney holds out into the season).

He's getting older. Probably not interested in a one year deal. He did it last year now he's got to accept what the market says he's worth. I'd be suspicious if he only signs for one year.
So let's say we sign him for three years, $14M guaranteed this year $7M next year, $7M the following year. Roster bonuses for years two & three plus game checks.
Or we can not do roster bonuses, but give him a huge salary years 2 & 3. That way we can cut him & only be accountable for games played.
I see $$$$ as nothing more than a % of the cap on a 1 yr deal.

They have to spend a certain amount on the cap. 28 mil is overkill. The 13-14 mil he got last yr isn't.

One concern the organization would need to deal with, though, is how would Suh fit in on a line with two freelance pass rushers (Clowney and Watt)... In other words, Suh isn't Casey Hampton- his pressures don't come as the result of collapsing the pocket while controlling the interior. So, does Suh's addition have the net gain that those pressure numbers indicate or would his addition force style and scheme changes that largely negate his positive impact? I'm not sure, but I know this isn't baseball and improving team productivity when acquiring a player is more complex than simply adding their personal stats to the team's projections.

Exactly. I view Suh as a less valuable replacement for Clowney or Watt. He is not a disciplined player that fulfills his role like say... DJ Reader.
Yes, I would rather have Reader than Suh on this team as it’s currently constructed. He fits better.

Both Clowney and Watt usually line up so far outside of the Tackles that Suh would have plenty of space to freelance inside of the Tackles. If the Texans were to sign Suh......I'd love to see a permanent front of Watt, Suh, Reader and Clowney. And yes, they could wreak havoc on offensive lines.

I would be fine with an energized Suh playing this season at 15M b/c the cap space is there and would have zero effect on the 2020 cap.

He's available, the Texans have a need and the cap space and there would be no repercussions going forward. There's really no reson not to sign him but the Texans doubtfully will make a bold move like other franchises do.
This can be done, look at the Rams last yr. Their front 4 would be similar to the Texans,

If the Rams coaches can figure it out. The Texans coaches should be able to figure it out or the Texans need to find new coaches.

Still, I don't know of many players taking back to back one year deals, definitely not with two different teams.
The purpose of the one year deal is to prove your market value. Either the teams lowballing a long term deal are wrong or the player/agent is being unreasonable.
Suh is likely to take the best multi year deal or retire.

It's about gap integrity. The guy playing behind him will have to know he has to play off the man in front of him. McKinney can trust the guy next to Jj is going to maintain his gap. So all he has to worry about is which gap Jj takes, then fill whichever is left.
If you have two freelancers next to each other he's got to decide which of the 4 gaps is his; the 2 Jj is playing or the two Reader is playing.
To allow Suh to come in & freelance, Jj or Clowney will have to accept one gap & attack it. Allowing the person behind to fill whichever gap Suh doesn't.

Depends on your definition of under performing.
Was Suh his all pro self? during the regular season, nope but he was solid. During the playoffs he as playing at an all pro level and that's what you want. Particularly from an older player.

Despite his somewhat decreased production last season.......still better than Suh's..........it can be explained by the fact that he battled nagging injuries to his ankle, shoulder, biceps and calf..........all truly minor, but certainly responsible for his relative decrease. I would still trade him for a 6th and expect better output than Suh. His contract for $13 million this season. But McCoy may be outright released......then he possibly goes into a bidding war.

Like the Texans record.....I don't put a lot a stock in a number 3 ranking b/c more often than not, it appeared that they gaffed in stopping the most crucial conversions. Just like the offense, gang busters between the 20's but a totally different team when it counts the most in the Red Zone.

Disagree run defense was elite this season and only sprung leaks late in games when secondary continued to fail them and teams would run out the clock and they were exhausted due to staying on the field too much. EX: Playoff loss to Colts.
Issues the Rams didn’t have with their offense last season consistently sustaining drives and putting points on the scoreboard. Their secondary had holes as well but their offense continued to answer the bell while our’s was inconsistent.

The battles are won in the trenches so an experienced big guy in there would certainly help put pressure on QBs.
He is 31 now which is getting up there for DLs so I wouldn't do more than a 2 year deal.
I am sure JJ and Clowney would appreciate what McCoy can bring.
Texans brought in a lot of new young guys so they may wait to see what they have before pulling the trigger on any new FA acquisitions.
That would work because if a guy is still there that would mean he has been waiting around and might accept a smaller contract.
On the other side of that though is why is he still available?

The Texans took their share of bone-headed penalties that helped keep the defense on the field. I wasn't referencing just rushing TD's but also took 3rd down conversions into consideration.

It isn't all about one year. Good GMs will foresee the problems that unfettered spending can cause.
Texans ever lose a player because of cap problems most of his board will be looking for the tar and feathers.
