Texans random thought of the day

And like I said that is rare. Sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you don't.

It's not as rare as you think. It just takes commitment and good scouting. I just gave you 3 examples of teams that have totally rebuilt their OL's in the last 2 yrs. It can and should be done down on Kirby. Or are you saying this cant be done because the Texans aren't as good as these other orgs?

I bet McVay could make our offense look 10x better without adding a single player.

I bet Todd Gurley would make our OL look 10x better. Especially on short & goal line situations.

If we had McVay & Gurley... we'd be 100x better up front.

That's not to say we shouldn't invest in OL. We got to draft someone. We're going to be looking at FAs.

I just think the point is that coaching is a big issue why 2nd round picks don't pay off on our OL.

Or maybe XSF was a bust and Martin has serious ankle injuries that date back to college. How do you explain Lamm/Mancz development?

Point is the teams I listed have invested both $$$$ and high draft picks in their OL. The Texans have invested in XSF/Martin and a bunch of backups in the last 5 yrs.

Was BO'b off having elective surgery during the combine?

I dont know was he, you dont know he may have wanted Jimmy G and got XSF instead. Would you agree that this draft is the best in the BOB era despite not having 1st or 2nd rd picks. I mean for the 1st time since the teams inception they have competent safety/ST's play.

I think history shows Jimmy G was over valued at 2-1.... He made it to 2-31. He could have had XSF & Jimmy G if he wanted. Could have traded into the bottom of the 2nd to get him.

We've had competent specials teams. I remember games when I had to hold it the entire game because I didn't want to miss a snap, offensive, defensive or special teams. We've had competent safeties.

Justin Reid looks good, ain't gone lie. But we've had safeties look good one year, then not so good the next. Will Demps. Glover Quinn was a competent safety.

Best draft since BO'b has been here? Hard to say as we're still in the honey moon phase. I remember certain people saying how pleased they were with the draft before the season, then after BO'b has coached them for a year it's Ricky's fault they all suk.

SteelB you should know a Draft can't be completely evaluated just half way into the first season after the Draft.

I know that the ST's and S play has been improved and I'm going out on a limb and say this was great draft class particularly with the limitations that were obvious.

You wasn't saying this during the 1st 3-5 games in which the secondary was getting torched. And yes finally during O'brien's tenure our special teams are playing solid.

Or maybe XSF was a bust and Martin has serious ankle injuries that date back to college. How do you explain Lamm/Mancz development?

Just a small correction...........Martin had no ankle issues in college...........he did have a significant undisclosed knee injury near the end of his 2013 season..............season-ending. Following this injury, all scouts noticed a very significant loss of athleticism the next season.

I sure did talk about how good KJax was at FS. Also mentioned Mathieu creating turnovers and I wasn't the only one saying this. I did mention KJO/JoJo sucking.

So you agree you were not saying "this was a great draft considering" over the first three games.

I think it's one of those crazy puzzles where pieces can't almost fit. I look at Mancz's 2016 season and him as starting Center had the best affect on Su'a-Filo and when Brown was finally back in game shape. Still, it was Su'a-Filo's best season hands down. Mancz has now had the same affect on the right side. Him starting at RG made Martin and Lamm look much better.

In my book, that makes Mancz an absolute piece to this OL puzzle. Fulton was playing well but his impact on his side just isn't on the same level as Mancz. If O'Brien and Devlin are hell bent on starting Fulton, then they might try to put Mancz at Center and maybe he would have a positive affect on both Fulton and Kelemete. No matter how they slice this pie, LT is the biggest question mark and Martin has been playing better of late.

I like the idea of Martin, Mancz and Lamm taking care of C to RT for next season. I like Kelemete at LG but I'm also very interested at seeing how Rankin might develop playing LG as well. These guys have to be locked in to establish continuity and this is where Devlin and O'Brien appear to be far too stubborn to make the necessary decisions.

If I could enter next season knowing, LG- Rankin, OC- Martin, RG- Mancz and RT- Lamm were established, then imagine what a veteran signing at LT might do for this unit. It also makes me as determined as ever to see the Texans draft, LT- Hyatt / Clemson and OC/OG- Risner / Kansas State. Hyatt would get a season behind a veteran as would Davenport but let the competition begin. Risner could push Martin and give the Texans the quality depth they've been missing for seasons. This would be the beginnings of a very solid future for the Texans OL.

Mancz is a solid player and a tough guy, but given his extensive injury history theres no way he’d hold up for an entire season as a starter. He’s a great back up though and a very solid piece to the OL puzzle. Martin played great as a G at ND, and Fulton played very well at center for the Chiefs last year. I’d like to see us switch those two to see what happens. I also think Rankin could be a mauler at G. Given his skill set, I’d like to see what Davenport could do at RT if given an entire offseason to get used to the position

Not that I needed to be reminded, this TB v Washington game is why the Texans let Fitzpatrick go. Buc fans fell in love with the guy but he is incredibly erratic and mistake prone.

BTW, the Redskines revamped o-line has looked good today. They’re going to be hard to beat. Alex has always given the Texans fits.

Who would have thought 6 weeks ago we would be a game ahead in the AFC South at 6-3, then Tennessee at 5-4, then Colts at 4-5, then Jags at 3-6.

Not me.

7 games to go and a game ahead in division.

Nice place to be.

Big thanks to the players, opposing coaches, and OB’s glasses.

The tAcks looked good today as Vrabel and Marriota handed Bill and Brady a pretty good whoopin.

I have two. 600s though

Ha since it's the random thread .. I remember getting some free tickets a while back. Quickly glancing at seats and saying to myself "dang that's way up there" so I go early tailgate, get fueled up etc... Walk in full on BBQ and Corona. Looking for seats can't see them on any billboard .. ask an usher for help .. her eyes kinda lit up "oh sir you have to come this way" leads me to elevator and says go all the way up. They were Chairman's Club tickets with free food and drinks and it was a surreal feeling. I wish I could say that I didn't still keep stuffing my face but I'd be lying.

Week 10 results suggest Texans’ schedule is getting tougher

John McClain , Houston Chronicle Nov. 11, 2018 Updated: Nov. 11, 2018 5:49 p.m.

If you were thinking New England would win at Tennessee on Sunday to give the Texans a two-game lead in the AFC South, you better think again.

The Titans’ 34-10 victory over the Patriots pulled them within one game of the Texans, who return from a six-day vacation Monday to prepare for the next game at Washington.

The Texans own a 6-3 record and a six-game winning streak, including three consecutive victories on the road for the first time since 2014, Bill O’Brien’s first season as coach.

While the Texans were enjoying their weekend off because of the open date, their next four opponents won. Teams they play in the next four games have improved, and the schedule looks a lot tougher than it did a month ago.

Let’s begin with Washington, which won 16-3 at Tampa Bay to elevate its record to 6-3 and solidify its lead in the NFC East. Washington allowed 501 yards but forced four turnovers against the Buccaneers.

Even though the Texans are also in first place, maybe they’ll catch Washington looking ahead to its next two games at Dallas and Philadelphia.

After Washington, the Texans play three consecutive home games. They return to NRG Stadium for a Nov. 26 Monday night game against the Titans. The Texans lost 20-17 at Tennessee in the second game of the season.

Since the Titans returned from a one-point loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in London, they’ve won back-to-back games over Dallas and New England by an average of 19 points.

In coach Mike Vrabel’s first season, the Titans are 5-4 and allowing 16 points per game, least in the NFL.

Quarterback Marcus Mariota has bounced back from a slump that had Nashville fans and media questioning his long-term viability. In the last two games, Mariota has four touchdowns passing and one rushing, helping them average 31 points.

Tennessee’s next game is at Indianapolis, and a winning streak is going to end.

Speaking of the Colts, who visit NRG Stadium on Dec. 9, they’ve overcome a 1-5 start that tied them for worst in the league.

The Colts are 4-5 with a three-game winning streak after their 29-26 victory over Jacksonville.

At the forefront of their revival is quarterback Andrew Luck, who has been spectacular. He threw three touchdown passes against the Jaguars.

Luck, who has been sacked 10 times behind his rebuilt offensive line, has thrown at least three touchdown passes in six consecutive games.

The Texans began their winning streak with a 37-34 overtime victory at Indianapolis, where first-year coach Frank Reich made a decision not to play for a tie and saw it backfire.

The Texans stopped the Colts on fourth down, and Ka’imi Fairbairn’s field goal with no time remaining gave the Texans their first victory after the 0-3 start.

Beginning with that loss to the Texans, the Colts have been an offensive machine under Reich. They averaged 33.3 points in their last six games. During their three-game winning streak, they averaged 36.

My concern is that while "a win is a win" is all well and good for example the Texans winning on last second missed FG's, opponent coaching decisions etc.. the Titans are winning CONVINCINGLY .. Im hoping we start to show some smash mouth tendencies and shore up some of the issues that plague this team.

Please Lord dont allow this team to come out looking lazy, lost or aloof on Sunday. Can you imagine the "Fire Bill" thread if this team comes out after a bye looking unprepared?

I'm actually looking forward to checking out the Tacks/Colts game.

The Panthers have released CJ Anderson. 5'8" 225 lbs, 4.1 ypc over the last 3 seasons, 4.4 ypc career, 1007 yds last season. Just wasn't being used in Carolina this season with McCaffrey around.

He has to go thru waivers. Would be the prorated remainder of $800k so just $350k. I'd snap him up. Instant upgrade to Blue, possibly Miller.

Just for reference Miller is running at 4.2 ypc (basically off the Miami game, otherwise 3.6 ypc) and Blue at 3.2 ypc.

The Texans have also won a couple of convincing games and their loss to the tAcks was by a FG in Nashville. Don't go crowning Vrabel Coach of the Year yet.

I actually agree with you on this one - 100%.

colts offensive line is putting in major work. they are keeping Luck clean and he has regained his form. Luckily for us he doesnt have much help in the receiving corps other than TE's and TY Hilton and their defense isnt very good, but with Luck slinging it they are not an easy out.

Titans defense has been impressive and I would say has been the major catalyst for the improved play, their offense is gimmicky and while effective it makes me wonder if its built for a long run. Still, Vrabel is earning stripes, I'm not crowning him anything, but he did take his mentor to the wood shed early in the year, and has taken out the best team in the league plus the defending champs. Our quality wins are against a 3-6 Jacksonville team and the Cowboys?

Crazy how everyone was saying a few weeks ago that the AFCS was garbage again, mainly because the Jags suck, but now there is a solid chance for the AFCS to have 2 playoff teams come out of it

I hope they do. Anyone would be an upgrade over Blue at this point.

The Titans are no joke: right now they are hands down playing the best ball in the division which would make them the best team like or not. It's that simple.
I've figured all year we are one 100% full slate of Draft picks & a FA with GM Gaine before we have the roster to be bonafide contenders as in serious competitors for the AFC conference title so I'm not gonna be too upset if the Titans beat us out in the AFC South. Hope they don't but it's very likely that happens.

Yes - but can he run up the middle for 1 yard?

People only say this when the Texans are leading the division. Some have a hard time admitting the Texans are a good football team.

I dont think so. Offense matters, and while they are playing good ball at some point they will need to score points, and our defense aint too shabby either. Our offense is miles ahead of Tennessee even with OBrien at the helm. Watson is a more complete QB and playmaker than Mariota .. Mariota is what everyone thought Watson would be .. a spread college QB who would struggle making the adjustment to the pro game. Doesnt hurt that we jumped out to a 2 game lead in the division. I agree that the Texans as constructed arent legitimate contenders.
