Evidently has personal professional photographer following him around initiating a Hollywood screen test.

He is quickly becoming a huge tool

@PatDStat: Practice is done for the day. #Texans looked much better today especially defensively. Offense still a work in progress, just seemed off today.

We need to play him at least a series to get him ready for the dress rehearsal. These guys need to bang in order to get into football shape.

My thoughts exactly. He's been off the field so long now that he needs some snaps. I wouldn't play him a half or anything crazy but he needs some playing time.

I'd prefer his huge tool to be on the field and not taking GQ pictures

I’m sure that’s his first choice too, nothing wrong with a little extra cash though as long as he plays his best and with J.J. he always tries his best.

Cody Stoots: 11 Observations from #Texans training camp for Thu., Aug. 16https://houston.sportsmap.com/cody-stoots-11-observations-from-texans-training-camp-thu-aug-16/ …

1:30 PM - Aug 16, 2018

1. DeAndre Hopkins started off against the 49ers much better today than yesterday. The only fight today was against gravity as Hopkins shook his man and skied for a one-handed catch that is amazing to most but seemingly routine for the Texans star. Later Hopkins found himself working hard in teams as Deshaun Watson went to him over and over again.

2. Hopkins addressed his altercation with Jimmie Ward after practice. He said it was "nothing" and joked they were actually playing tic-tac-toe. He went on to say it was just a scuffle and "that’s football" before saying he and Ward were cool.

3. Richard Sherman and Deandre Hopkins squared off late in the practice. Sherman looks so weird in 49ers gear and he was quite the match for Hopkins. After the practice Hopkins said it is nice to see guys like Sherman in practice because they are an elite talent and then he gets with those players to find out what he can improve on. Hopkins said it is an information exchange in those situations.

4. The Texans pass catchers started fast and furious against the 49ers. Hopkins, Will Fuller, Bruce Ellington, Braxton Miller, and Sammie Coates all started the drills portion with consecutive catches. The wideouts didn’t stay dominant though as the 49ers DBs caught up and pulled out some wins of their own. Keke Coutee is missing a ton of opportunity with his injury and it may be opening the door for Braxton Miller or Sammie Coates to make the roster. Coates had a wonderful over the shoulder catch and Miller shook loose with ease a couple of times. It is the most interesting battle in camp and gets even more interesting when Coutee returns and takes some reps away from the other pass catchers.

5. Bruce Ellington is hard to cover and his movements once he gets the ball are fluid and sudden. There hasn’t been a 49ers player that could cover him in space yet. Ellington hasn’t played a ton in the NFL but the Texans seem to trust him with various wideout duties including the slot.

6. The running game was again disappointing. The Texans got very little going on the ground once again. Troymaine Pope has some nice wiggle in the tight spaces and shot through on a few reps but his size might make that difficult to replicate in a full go game. Alfred Blue made some people pay on the line of scrimmage today.

7. Kareem Jackson had an interception off Jimmy Garoppolo today. The 49ers started a team portion by taking a shot deep only to find the Texans new safety patiently waiting for the ball. Kurtis Drummond had another interception today as well in team drills.

8. A scary moment for Brandon Weeden as a 49ers linebacker fell onto his legs as Weeden headed to the ground. Weeden was animated in his displeasure with his opponent as touching the quarterbacks is off limits. Weeden hit an amazing play-action pass to Braxton Miller after a successful run and still, despite his age, has a cannon.

9. Speaking of cannons, Deshaun Watson almost put a hole in Ryan Griffin in a red zone rep. With his head surveying left to right and a pass rush closing in Watson fit a rocket into the tightest window we have seen since the Texans arrived back in Houston. Between two 49ers players and almost through Griffin. Touchdown Texans.

10. Justin Reid earned a hearty congratulations from Tyrann Mathieu after he popped a 49ers player to end a rep. Reid said after practice the first game was a great experience because now he can start adjusting to the speed of the game and see the level at which he can compete. He had a great pass break up on a long Jimmy Garoppolo pass to a tight end.

11. Bill O’Brien explained the "starters" would play "about the same" as the first preseason game. He explained they got a lot of game-like action over the past two days making it less important for them to play in the preseason game. He said it was just "really good work" the past two days.

JJ Watt was having his way with the SF offense line. The linebacker core of McKinney, Cunningham, Cole is fast group...both side line to side line and downhill.

Rumors of Braxton Miller having a great camp were true. Appears to have a good grasp of the playbook.

Medium and short routes he looked good. Couple of missed throws when he got flushed out of the pocket.

Watson missed a couple of bombs to Fuller; but great to see Fuller getting open down the field.

Bill O’Brien said he thinks starters will see “about the same” amount of playing time on Saturday as they did in the preseason opener. “We just ran about 150 plays in two days in 100-degree heat ... so, that’s just really good work.” Last week, Deshaun Watson played one series.
I like that Coach. Keep 'em as fresh and rested as possible for the opener vs Brady & Co, but I gotta admit it's concerning not to hear any better reports about the
offensive line than what we are hearing/reading.

Does marketing win football games?

Broken backs and broken knee caps don’t. And that is what he has had the last two seasons.

You can tell by the marketing picture the guy is hard at work to get back at being great.

I don’t doubt his resolve, effort or motives. The has given much to Houston. There are few athletes that have given as much.

And I don’t knock him for taking a picture that will promote him and his brand to sell some shoes.

****, he may not even knew the picture was taken at the time.

Doncha know you cant be about winning and taking pictures at the same time?
Or helping hurricane victims...
Or interacting with fans...
Or winning DPOY...3 times...

Not that we care (or should) but the general non-Texans fan perspective is that Watt is an opportunist at best, and probably has an intentionally crafted too near perfect image.

It does if it's J J Watt
Well, we did rock a nice 2-14 with JJ Watt as a fulltime starter (2013)

Yeah with our franchise QB throwing the "rock" to the other team and scoring damn near just as many TDs for them as He did for us.

I'm sorry, but I don't care who you are, NOBODY can win with that happening.

Houston Texans Training Camp: Kareem Jackson And The Defense Have A Strong Showing
IMG_4782.jpg

The Houston Texans ended their joint practices with the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday after another full padded practice. The two days of work were beneficial for each team and there were no scuffles in the final day of work.

Here is a look at today’s practice.

For the second day in a row, J.J. Watt did what he wanted to do during practice. Today, Watt was a menace in both pass rush and run defense. Watt was beating double teams against the run and shooting inside the offensive tackle, making plays behind the line of scrimmage. If this was a real game, Watt would have had at least three sacks on Jimmy Garoppolo and he did it in a variety of ways. Once he used a stunt with the defensive tackle, looping inside. On the other two times, he was able to use his own pass rush moves to get to Garoppolo. It has been a productive two days for Watt and it is safe to say that he looks much better than this time last year when he was coming off of his back injury.

Deshaun Watson has an up and down day, which has been the case the past two days. Watson was able to throw the ball with accuracy during 1-on-1 drills and linked up with his receivers easily. During the team session it was a little different situation. He missed a wide open Will Fuller twice as Fuller beat the coverage but Watson overthrew the ball both times, not giving Fuller a chance. He seems to be fighting the urge to run, forcing himself to stand in the pocket. Watson just did not look himself on passing plays, despite having plenty of time to survey the field – although some of that credit could go to the 49ers secondary hanging on in coverage.

The Texans offensive line looked much better today and was able to hold their own in pass protection. Still, there are a few hiccups running the ball but the line kept Watson clean for the day. Seantrel Henderson looked better today and was able to control the pass rush. The entire group seemed to have better communication both among themselves and with the running back who was in for the play. Greg Mancz was once again able to impose his will and he cleaned up a blitzing defensive back coming off of the edge. It was a strong day for the first group offensive line.

Kareem Jackson is getting used to his new role in the defense and produced a pass breakup, picking off Jimmy Garoppolo’s first pass of the final team session. Jackson is lurking as a safety and while having his eyes to the line of scrimmage, he has shown that he understands the route combinations coming at him.

Don’t count out Kurtis Drummond and the work he has put in to this point. For the second day in a row, he was able to produce a turnover plus he picked off another pass that would have resulted in a pick-6, his second in as many days. Drummond also laid a nice hit on a wide receiver coming across the middle and was able to break up the pass with the hit. Drummond is solidifying his spot on the roster.

Justin Reid also played well today and is starting to make plays. Reid has a pass breakup on an out route and he was able to close on it. He laid the hit of the day completely knocking a running back off his feet coming down hill from the safety position. Reid is fitting well with Kareem Jackson and Tyrann Mathieu as the top three safeties.

Braxton Miller is putting himself back into the offensive rotation and the biggest thing for Miller is that the coaches are having him work at all three receiver spots for the offense. He is getting into the creases of the defense and giving Watson some room to get him the football. Miller is the only receiver besides Will Fuller and DeAndre Hopkins who knows all of the wide receiving positions. Miller has improved his catching ability and his overall game. He has gotten a strong grasp on what he needs to do in the offense.

Will Fuller’s route running and how much room he creates with his speed and quickness are something to watch. Fuller also showed his vertical speed by getting wide open twice but Watson could not link up with him. The Texans offense needs Fuller to be healthy because his presence on the field opens up so much more of the playbook due to his ability to take the top off the defense.

Nick Rose, the newly signed kicker, got his chance to hit a field goal early in practice and he shanked it right. Ka’imi Fairbairn will be out for a short time but Rose did nothing to help his cause during his first day of work with his new team.

Fighting for a roster spot, Dee Virgin is trying to bounce back from a suspect showing in the first preseason game. Virgin was active in coverage and even got his hand on a pass to break it up. That play got the defense excited about the play and moving in the right direction. Virgin also showed much better skill in tackling and squaring up ball carriers during today’s practice.

Brandon Weeden was not happy after 49ers Fred Warner went low and hit him on the knee in the pocket. Weeden jumped up and threw the football at Warner hitting him in the helmet. Players and coaches from both teams jumped in quick to break up the two before anything got out of control.

Inside linebackers for the Texans had a nice day and in 7-on-7 drills, Benardrick McKinney was dropping into coverage, getting his hand on a Jimmy Garoppolo pass. Later in the practice, Zach Cunningham had a clear path to Garoppolo and would have had a sack on him. The Texans inside linebacker group continues to make plays happen in the middle.

The Texans actually cut loose today on special teams and kickoff return was practiced. The Texans put together some nice returns and even had two get past midfield. Braxton Miller, Sammie Coates, Troymaine Pope, and Tyler Ervin each took their rep at kick returning.

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&
Well todays performance by the OLine is encouraging.
I dunno but the last two sentences in this paragraph (which is from the link above by TheKDog), leave the impression that Mancz was getting some significant snaps with the first unit ?

I know our starters will be limited in this game but I'd really like to see DW4 and the WRs give the 49ers the business. I'd like to see how open Bruce Ellington is getting and some of this improvement from Braxton Miller. I'm still very skeptical about him.

The WR cut will likely be the toughest on this team. The health of Coutee will play a huge role here, but for the moment let's just assume all are 100% healthy.

* total locks
Hopkins
Fuller

* near locks
Ellington
Coutee

* Leading the race for last spot(s)
Coates
Miller

I could see a scenario where all 6 of the above make it.

* would have a better shot in another year, but in this group, these are the longshots

Chris Thompson
Bray
V. Smith
Weah

A couple of these guys could be slated for the PS

yeah JJ was horrible that year--80 tackles 10.5 sacks, 7 passes defended.

I think the Texans offense is a work in progress but hard to base much off joint practices. No real game plan plus working to find their identity. Have to wait until the regular season to have a real discussion on the group.

— patrick (@PatDStat) August 17, 2018

I think the Texans offense will be much better when the lights are turned on because Watson can go to work the way he knows how. Practice things are still controlled by whistles and protecting each other.

— patrick (@PatDStat) August 17, 2018

Joint practices are great and both the Texans and 49ers did a good job of protecting each other. Sure there was contact but they limited taking each other to the ground.

— patrick (@PatDStat) August 17, 2018

The biggest change for the offense is how much more athletic and explosive they are at the right end spot. Griffin, Thomas and Akins are all threats in the passing game.

Mancz should be starting. He’s better than Martin.

Sounds like he was at guard? Would be pretty rare for the center to work his way all the way to the edge to to pick up a blitzing DB.
