Good to see the boys doing real football stuff. Only real issue holding some things up is JDs knee and I expect that will sort itself out before the season starts.

This place gives me the chills. It looks like where the very rich, very mentally ill go. I don't believe in ghosts. But if I did, this is where they would do their haunting.
 
-- Loved seeing receiver Will Fuller catching the deep ball again. With ease.

-- Running backs kept trying linebacker Dylan Cole down the field during one-on-ones and lost every time...just like the Browns did in week six last year.


-- Wide receiver Bruce Ellington made a magnificent over the shoulder catch for a touchdown near the end of practice. He made that look way easier than that catch actually is.

-- The Texans two rookie tight ends snatched everything thrown their way.

-- Jordan Thomas is one impressive human being and has some juice after the catch.

-- Jordan Akins made two or three catches, with his hands, in tight traffic during the day. There was no body catching either, nothing but hands.

-- Man, it was great to see J.J. Watt back in action...and Deshaun Watson...and Nick Martin...and D.J. Reader...and Whitney Mercilus...and Christian Covington. That’s a lot of firepower that was lost to injury last year.


-- Watt looked like he hasn’t missed one minute in the weight room and I can’t wait to see him bangin’ in pads on Saturday.

-- One thing I noticed studying free agent signee interior lineman Zach Fulton was his strength. There were no pads on today, but I saw him take a Texans linebacker and literally shove him ten feet by the pile as if it were nothing.

-- I didn’t see many dropped passes on Thursday at all, which when I think back a few years, that was a real issue.

-- Loved seeing the coaches challenge the linebackers/safeties/cornerbacks during one-on-ones forcing them to cover with no use of hands/collision. That’s as challenging a drill as can be for cover guys to rely solely on read/react/redirect skills.

-- Running back Alfred Blue’s pass receiving skills seem to have improved every single year in the NFL and he made a couple of slick catches during the one-on-one/seven-on-seven periods.


-- Linebackers had a ton of trouble slowing down running back Lamar Miller in pass periods.

-- Still trying to get used to a few number changes. Tyler Ervin is now #21. Dee Virgin is Ervin’s old #34. Seantrel Henderson is wearing #76, which was worn for nearly a decade by Duane Brown.

-- Rookie receiver Keke Coutee has some serious next level quickness and speed, but his best overall trait might be his gluesticks for hands. He really snatches the football no matter where it’s thrown to him.

-- Tyrann Mathieu is a Texan. Tyrann Mathieu is a Texan...maybe if I keep repeating myself, it’ll sink in more and more. The star safety has such excellent instincts, whether it’s cutting off a route in coverage or reading the QB/playing the middle of the field in zone coverage.

-- I missed seeing Andre Hal today and will for a while.


-- Rookie safety Justin Reid may have had the best effort on a play today when he executed a full layout dive for an interception down the field. The ball was overthrown and closest Texan was Reid and he did about a five yard dive, parallel to the ground and missed it by inches.

-- One player who demanded my attention was cornerback/ST star Johnson Bademosi. He had at least three break ups of passes in various periods.

-- Another guy that we’d love to see have a great camp had a great day for the most part - receiver Braxton Miller. He was tough to cover in one-on-ones and made a few stellar plays down the field as well.

Had to look up Troymaine Pope. Had never heard of him.

He looks decent. Can return and is ok running out of the backfield. I don’t see him becoming special or anything but he looks like he’s worthy of taking nfl carries.

Watson measured just above average for NFL QBs, along side Brissett and Cook. Peterman and Kizer both measured larger. No where close to Russell, Brees, Wentz, Prescott, Lynch, Kessler or Allen.
 
Jordan Thomas has 11 5/8" mitts for hands.

Like the safety that went undrafted in the supplemental draft Brandon Bryant. You have to wonder why Mississippi State couldn't get more production out of these plus athletes.
 
— One thing that stands out watching the entire passing operation during individual is the few times that the ball actually hits the ground. There are few pass catchers on this team that don’t snatch the ball out of the air and the quarterbacks are on point with their tosses.

— I love seeing new drills from different positions/groups. There was one that I’ve never seen in all my years of football – a toss/bootleg drill between the quarterbacks and running backs. It was brilliant from the quarterbacks and running backs.

— Rookie receiver Keke Coutee made a pair of grabs, including a DeAndre Hopkins Toe Drag Swag type catch, during team drills. His hands are just outstanding.

— Fellow slot receiver Bruce Ellington made another couple of catches down the field on Friday as defensive backs struggled to cover him deep in the secondary.

— A few of the defensive veterans relished the challenge of covering the team’s rookie tight ends – Jordan Akins and Jordan Thomas – during drills. They, in particular linebacker Benardrick McKinney, had some success early, but Akins went down the seam later in practice and hauled in a beauty and the chatter seemed to stop at that point.

— First play of 7-on-7, Watson hit Hopkins on an out route to the sideline. Pitch. Catch. Toe Drag…it’s like they’ve doing that for years.

— Rookie receiver Jester Weah adjusted to a deep throw from Brandon Weeden during 7-on-7, making a sliding catch. He just has to be more consistent catching everything thrown his way.

— There’s a comfort in having Tyrann Mathieu at safety for this defense. He had a pass breakup on the first play of team in the red zone.

— Down in the red zone, after a few stops by the defense, Watson lasered one to Jordan Akins. The defensive back seven looked at each other afterwards like "nothing we could do." They were right.

— We can talk all we want about receiver Will Fuller’s speed, but he’s a much more accomplished route runner than anyone likes to discuss. Yes, his speed helps sell those routes, but very few utilize that speed properly on their routes.

— When the two units got together to compete during team, it was evident how much camaraderie each unit has. I saw each huddle fist bump everyone before they started scrimmaging.

— I love hearing "1s on 1s" because both units are nearly even and it makes for one heck of a team competition.

— The last drill of the day was an 11-on-11 drill from inside the ten yard line. The star? Cornerback Kevin Johnson. He broke up the first pass attempt for Hopkins. Then, he intercepted the last pass of the day. It was an excellent end to day two for Johnson.

— I haven’t focused much on the offensive/defensive lines as there have been no pads until tomorrow. I did watch left tackle Julien Davenport tangle with J.J. Watt and liked what I saw from the second year tackle. That’s the best education he can get to face number 99 every rep, every day.

— That defensive line is a tight group and no one is safe from a little bit of ribbing. The group was working on using their hands in different ways versus an offensive lineman dummy. Whenever the dummy "won"…and it did a few times…it elicited catcalls from the group. Not even J.J. Watt was spared.

— Kicker Kaimi Fairbairn has been kicking into an Arena League like goal post throughout the past two days. Today, he nailed one from about 60 through those pipes (and the NFL pipes too).

Now that pads are on, I'm ready to see how Duke Ejiofor does in passing drills. He has all the tools to succeed but his issue is durability. It appears he's out there, today. (Unless I missed something)
 
Nate, who is their RT? I'm too lazy to check lol. Prayers for whomever it is. Injuries suck!

Is it just me, or is camp news more of a dribble then a flood this year. Not a ton coming out. Still....football is back even if it is just practice! That's never a bad thing!

As far as Bryant, everything I've read about him talked about how poor his instincts were........the receivers would go one way, and he would go the other or overrun the receiver. In that position, instincts is a make it or break it, despite speed being there.
 
Clowney took part in team drill today...........for a very short period..........only ONE drill........and was then relegated back to the sideline. O'Brien has said that he was going to ease Clowney back into play, but for him to come out so quickly after such a long rehab makes you think that Clowney's knee may not be responding as hoped. To be seen as TC progresses.

Fuller said he has gained 15-20 lbs with the help of Richesson. So he played last year at 165-170...........at 6'. No wonder the durability problems. He actually weighed in at 186 at the Combine (and at that time was criticized for small body type. Wonder whose great idea it was to have him drop down to 165-170???

Fuller has enough problems having to compensate his tiny 8 1/4 inch hands without introducing a tiny body type............

That's not why the coverage is especially so bad. It's because 2 of the typical major contributors are not there. McClain is not there. Nor is Patrick Starr.
 
Ex Houston Oilers OT Brad Hopkins is an analyst for SiruisXM's Bleacher Report Radio. He had some interesting remarks concerning padded practices. Essentially, he stated the numbers afforded to pre-CBA players compared to post-CBA players was 3.5 to 1. He said that the lack of quality/prepared Offensive Linemen is a direct result, especially in light of the college offensive game being in such contrast to the NFL.
