Texans random thought of the day

KJax was not a top CB when the Texans were missing the rush. Go ahead and pull the stats....but IMO, he didn't pass the eye test. I'm not certain if the Texans plan on him playing SS but I always thought he'd be best suited as a FS.

The problem is if we did move him to safety years ago who was going to play corner? Kevin Johnson has been hurt and a disappointment up until this point.

I feel strongly that the reason K jacks did not get moved to safety was specifically because Kevin Johnson could not stay on the field and was not thought to be able to stay on the field.

I'm placing this post in this section because I always think of Gaffney in a Texans uni If mods wish to move this to the NFL section, feel free). It's strange how time flies.....he was last on the team in 2005 and has been on numerous other teams until he retire in 2012.

Looks like his life has taken an unfortunate down hill road since 2016.

Lito Sheppard's Car Vandalized by Jabar Gaffney, Girlfriend in Jacksonville
Kyle NewportJune 22, 2018

Former Pro Bowl cornerback Lito Sheppard recently was the target of vehicle vandalism, and the suspect happens to be his former high school and college teammate, Jabar Gaffney.

According to First Coast News, Gaffney and his girlfriend allegedly vandalized Sheppard's car while he was eating in a restaurant in Jacksonville Beach. Sheppard did not realize his car had been tampered with until the drive home, and he ultimately had to get his car towed to a repair shop.

News4Jax provided footage of the vandalism:

The police report, obtained by First Coast News, detailed the incident:

"Gaffney retrieved some type of tool and a container from the suspect's vehicle, walked over to the passenger's side of the victim's vehicle near the gas tank, and pried it open. Gaffney then poured an unknown substance from the container into the gas tank. ... The unknown female walked around the vehicle and stabbed all of the tires with a sharp object."

Sheppard revealed that his car suffered $14,000 worth of damage.

This is not Gaffney's first run-in with the law, however. He was arrested for marijuana and drug paraphernalia possession in 2016 and again on a domestic battery charge last year.

Jaffney's attorney has quickly responded that his client "had nothing to do with the incident"..................despite surveillance video showing otherwise.

This writer obviously doesn't do his homework.. Their "relationship" doesn't just "go back decades" because they were teammates...they're family (cousins) and this family beef has been going on for a long time. I really don't see how that writer didn't pick up on this, hopefully this isn't his day job, hell I remembered it.

I know he says it didn't happen, but he sure feels salty and it sounds like his cousin slept with his ex old lady.

Lol, this drama reminds me of my extended family...I bet thanksgivings are REAL FUN over there too.

Supplemental draft will be held on July 11
June 25, 2018, 12:19 PM EDT

The NFL has set the date and time for this year’s supplemental draft.

It will be held on July 11 at 1 p.m. ET and there are three players available for interested teams. Former Mississippi State defensive back Brandon Bryant, former Western Michigan cornerback Sam Beal and former Virginia Tech cornerback Adonis Alexander will be available.

Alexander held a pro day workout earlier this month and Bryant worked out for scouts on Monday. Beal is scheduled to do the same later this week.

The draft will play out like the regular seven-round draft and any team using a pick for one of the three players will forfeit their selection in the same round of the 2019 draft. Any player who goes unpicked becomes a free agent.

No player has been selected in a supplemental draft since the Rams took Isaiah Battle in 2015. Battle is now with Seattle and joins wide receivers Terrelle Pryor and Josh Gordon as the only active players to enter the league as a supplemental draft pick.

The Texans were at Bryant's workout today..

Very good athlete and the Texans seem to like Miss St. Drafted 2 from there this season already... My concern is why is a guy that athletic not more productive? Would not use more than a 7th for him. I prefer my players to play like Tarzan rather than just look the part.

Poor awareness of his surroundings, especially when expected to cover on the outside. Surprisingly, his coach has said that he is one of the most talented and hardest working players (work ethic) he has ever coached. You then have to wonder about his "football IQ," which becomes much more important in the NFL.

Texans happy to have Romeo Crennel back in familiar role

June 26, 2018

The last time Romeo Crennel ran the Texans' defense, it it finished first in the NFL in yards allowed during the 2016 season. He's back as defensive coordinator after a year as assistant head coach.

The wisdom of Romeo Crennel is frequently expressed in gentle, yet firm reminders about the nuances of his complicated defense.

Instead of just communicating through his headset to relay his defensive strategy to $50 million inside linebacker Benardrick McKinney, Crennel utilizes a personal touch.

Inside his office, in meeting rooms, hallways and the cafeteria at NRG Stadium, the 71-year-old defensive boss often pulls players aside for a few words.

Romeo Anthony Crennel, also known as RAC, doesn’t confine his counsel to football.

A folksy Virginia native who grew up in Kentucky, Crennel is open to talking about life and isn’t shy about offering his advice. Crennel never pretends to have all the answers, but he’s willing to help and lend whatever perspective he deems appropriate.
The son of a military veteran and a father and a grandfather himself, Crennel provides a unique outlook appreciated by his charges on the Texans’ roster.

“No doubt, he’s kind of like the Gandhi,” Texans veteran outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus said of Crennel. “To have a coach like that, it’s tremendous. Especially for the younger players to understand the defense. He’s not quick to rip somebody.

"If you mess up his defense, he’s going to get (upset). You’ve got to be able to perform. He’s seen a lot of things over the years. It’s awesome to have him here.”

Instant credibility

In his fifth decade of coaching, Crennel carries a credibility that doesn’t need to be illustrated.

Two years ago, the former Cleveland Browns and Kansas City Chiefs head coach was the architect of the Texans’ top-ranked defense in the NFL.

Last year when Mike Vrabel took over the defense with Crennel operating in an advisory capacity as assistant head coach, the Texans dealt with numerous injuries and finished 20th in total defense. They also ranked last in the NFL in points allowed per game.

With Vrabel now coaching the Tennessee Titans, Crennel is back as defensive coordinator and is one of the highest-paid defensive gurus in the league with a salary in excess of $1.8 million per year.

Although Vrabel was a popular figure in the organization and well-respected as a fiery leader and former All-Pro outside linebacker, the return of Crennel has brought smiles around the building.

THE REST OF THE STORY

PFF stuff is bullshit. While the Texans might not be the highest ranked team in the league, the Texans ranked 31st is complete crap.

Media opinions are like arseholes, everyone has one. PFF has the Texans as the second worst roster in the NFL and Walters Football has the Texans drafting in the 29th spot in RD1.....hel!, that's a big arse swing of opinion by the so-called experts.

I know I am a homer, but Texans only need key players to spend more time on the field and they will obviously be better than last season and should return at least to their middle of the pack status.
Somewhere around the middle would seem to be more logical.

That's not a homer response. It's more realistic, if our key players stay healthy we're definitely better than 4-12. #FACTS

New England Patriots 6/1
Philadelphia Eagles 8/1
Minnesota Vikings 10/1
Los Angeles Rams 12/1
Pittsburgh Steelers 12/1
Green Bay Packers 14/1
New Orleans Saints 16/1
Houston Texans 20/1
Jacksonville Jaguars 20/1
Los Angeles Chargers 20/1
San Francisco 49ers 20/1

Vegas sees our odds better than PFF and I think this is a little more realistic. I would agree that our odds are the same as Jacksonville -- they're legit but Bortles is at the helm. If Watson stays healthy, it's going to be a hell of a time winning the AFC South but it's doable. I predict we swap places w/ Jacksonville and get to the AFC Championship game this year and 2019 is our year to win it all.

Vegas is sorta the market but not quite, because there's so much sentiment involved but I'd still take those odds over PFF anytime , and in particular I like those
20-1 bets on the Rams and the Jags though of course sentimentally I'm pulling for the Texans.

Absolutely.
Even in his first 7 games DW4 showed he is a scoring machine so how much better can he be?
This offense could be a real problem for defenses and keep our defense off the field longer and not under so much pressure to bail the offense out.
We could see a legit contender if the injury bug is merciful to us this year.

Beal weighed in much lighter than I expected (178 down from 187 in spring practice). But i’d feel good about the CBs going into this season and beyond if the team were to add him. Raw player but good length/athleticism and does not shy away from contact so should be a good fit on this team. Especially if he continues to improve going into his 3rd season playing CB.

A CB room featuring Jo Jo, K Jo, Colvin and Beal would be a good mix of veteran leadership, youth and upside. Then throw in another young player like Jermaine Kelly or his teammate Andre Chachere winning a roster spot this team would have good size/athleticism at the position.

Per rotoworld.

NFL Network's Gil Brandt reports Western Michigan CB Sam Beal could go as high as the third round in the supplemental draft.

Beal lived up to the mid-round hype at his Pro Day, running a 4.47 forty with a 37-inch vertical. There's league wide interest in him after all 32 teams attended his workout. Beal has a chance to be the highest supplemental pick since Josh Gordon was drafted in the second round. Cleveland and Buffalo have been linked as possible Beal landing spots.

In that case... not sure where you’re going with the Watt/Hopkins comments

PFF are idiots when they speak about some things but spot on about others while using the same formula all along.

Yes, I may be using a bit of a broad brush here to say that the same people are making both of these kinds of statements, but taking a stab that the frequency with which these examples happens lends to a fair amount of truth.

I don’t know of many people who point to the PFF grades to say that Watt and Hopkins are dominant players.

I've seen pics from the pff subscription material here loads for Watt during his dpoy seasons and especially as of late for Hopkins with his 'bounce back' season last year. And I'd go to the trouble of searching the boards for examples if there were a way to rummage through pics/media. But it's certainly been put out here.

Just to clarify the 4.47 is an avg as he ran 4.40 with wind and 4.51 against. I would not want to give up more than a 5th due to depth at corner in 2019 and his academics. Chad Reuter ranks him at 122 or late 4th.

And Draftwire's Luke Easterling had him going to the Texans in the 1st round of his 2019 mock draft released at the end of the 2018 NFL draft.

https://draftwire.usatoday.com/2018/04/30/2019-nfl-mock-draft-way-too-early-1st-round-projections/3/

Many people had him as a late 1st/early 2nd prospect going into 2019. Someone will get him with a 2nd or 3rd this year. If I had to guess, it'll be the Browns with first pick rights in either round and their GM attending the pro day.

thanks for info. Still for me and depth of draft I cannot go higher than round 5 but if these guys are correct, it will not come to that. I'm eager for Greedy to fall to us round one as he could be franchise type but if not there I'm ok with getting a corner later rounds. Some have forgotten or overlooking Johnson Bademosi who is more than a CB who can play ST. He had 27 tackles with Patriots last year starting only 3 games when Gilmore went out but played in all 16 games.

There's a little bit of hypocritism that regularly goes on with the board. When stats support a Texans player, the likes go flying..............best thing since buttered bread. When the stats don't support a Texans player or puts him in a questionable light , the denigration goes through the roof.................worst thing since sh&t on a shingle.

I've never liked PFF, they fall into the "paralysis by analysis" bucket with me. I don't even know how they compute half of their crap they put out, but I do know what my eyes tell me and my eyes told me that Deshaun Watson was a damn good QB and a badass on the field when he was healthy and played. If his stats and numbers don't fair well in whatever algorism they have cooked up over there..well let's just say, I hope they think he's a mediocre QB again next year as well.
