2018 Texans Player Transactions

Looks like Coyle and Malone are listed as guards. Played tackle in college.
Malone's feet are too slow as is the rest of him. He has shown poor ability to quickly react, is pretty weak and has not been shown to be very athletic. That doesn't make him a great candidate to transition well to an NFL LT. The apple in this case did not fall as close to the tree as what the NFL would want.

Yea the kid is only 6'4" but can you imagine his 6'9" father with his athleticism in the NFL as a LT or maybe a TE ?

I'm not sure what to make of this. I had him listed as an OG since the draft - the 15th best prospect at the position. Needs development but graded out "highly" against his SEC competition. I'd like him to surprise, but realistically, is a candidate for the practice squad.

Hell of a journey for him. Just watching some clips of him it looks like he has a chance to stic in some form.
Seems like he is willing to learn at any rate.
Any competitive attitude is welcome among the rooks - hopefully it will rub off on them too.

Per rotoworld:

Texans claimed QB Stephen Morris off waivers from the Seahawks.

A 26-year-old journeyman at this point, Morris has spent time with six different organizations since going undrafted out of Miami (FL) in 2014.

Still hoping to find something that can keep the ship afloat if something happens with Watson, again. We tried to fix the OL but that was never a 1 off-season quick fix.

Texans signed OT Kendall Calhoun, DE Nick Thurman, claimed QB Stephen Morris, placed K.J. Malone, Karl Malone's son, on reserve-retired list, cut Montay Crockett and Jalen Wilkerson.

-Aaron Wilson

I had a feeling that Malone wasn't really into football, anymore. Similar to Dwight Jones a while back. (At least Malone didn't call himself the next Duane Brown)

Were the Dolphins ahead of the Texans on the waiver order when they claimed Petty? Makes me wonder if they have been trying to acquire another QB that can run the RPOs that they want to run with DW4 in practice.

I have a feeling Weeden is going to get very few reps this preseason and be more of a coach than player. Like Schaub, good in the meeting room!

Breakfast: The Texans roster renovation

The one thing to understand about an NFL roster is that it's always fluid. It's always in flux, 24/7/365, but even with that as a guide or backdrop, it's clear that the Texans roster has undergone a serious renovation. It dawned on me how drastic the changes have been in a short amount of time.

When the Texans sent out the notice of transactions the Monday after rookie minicamp, it struck me how drastically things had changed just in the last year. So, I examined the current 90-man roster to see how many players were on the roster at the start of training camp at the Greenbrier in July 2017. In less than one year's time, 46 (!!) players that started training camp in West Virginia last season no longer remain on the roster. That doesn't even count the players that arrived during the season and no longer remain (ex: Jelani Jenkins, Johnthan Banks). Less than half of the roster has turned over in that short of a time period. In comparison, the previous year, 35 players started training camp in 2016 and were no longer on the roster in the spring of 2017.

Of the 41 position players that are still on the roster since the start of training camp, only 24 of them played in 10 games or more in 2017. Of those 24, only 12 were considered starters that started/played 10 games or more in 2017. As a comparison, Jacksonville returns 18 starters that started/played 14 games or more in 2017.

Throw in changes in the front office, coaching staff and sports performance staff and there have been a lot of introductions taking place this spring. The good news is that the changes have had a significantly positive impact on the organization throughout the spring; talk to anyone in this building and they plainly see it. Hopefully, when the 2018 53-man roster is finalized, those changes will result in a historic season that we'll never forget.

Drastic change is warranted after a 4-12 season.

Without 1st and 2nd rd picks this yr that made change even harder.

With all of their draft picks plus Seattle's 2nd rder next season we can expect even more turnover next season. One thing the Texans org track record says is they wont be players for any major FA signings. Thx McNair.

Thanks for the work you put in.

29th in tackles = 10 Ms per year? Ok. Cool to sign developed talent hoping Mac continues to grow and hopefully become a top MLB since he's getting paid like one.

Would have resigned Clowney first ... Way more impactful and valuable to the defense.

Don't be surprised if Clowney is not given an extension, if he doesn't present to TC as a "full go."

McKinney is healthy and Clowney is not. Let's not rush to extend the latter until better understanding of his latest surgery. IIRC 2018 cap plus two tags = about $48 million. He can be offered an extension any time during those three years when he is healthy. Texans have stepped up for all their guys except Duane Brown who has not yet been extended by Seattle. I'm okay with Mc's new deal but PFF rated him 79.7 "average". Personally, I don't think I would have extended Mc until 2018 off season. His cap was $7.3 m for 2019; not sure if new deal "reworks" cap next two seasons or extends in 2020. I am hoping for latter but I could see wanting to get some of money moved into earlier years as he is 28 and 29 YOA. Better to look at guaranteed $ sooner rather than later yet have him tied up for 10-12 years if he is wanted. MLB at 39 + would be rare.

I won't be. Texan MO is usually to let skilled players walk and to overspend on marginal talent because of their "rules" and stuff. You know the championship Texan football way.

Adrian Peterson

I was just waiting to see who would be the first to put his name there.....but I'm still on board with giving him a look in camp. If he isn't impressive, release him before he burns up any reps for someone who may stick around.

Clowney isn’t 100% healthy. Why would you sign him to an extension?

Rick Smith is that you?

Clowney just completed his first 16 game pro bowl season. Minor arthroscopic procedure worries me 0% .. he's overcome microfracture and I'm not doubting him again.
