Ummm. Hi.

Oh goody, an exception that proves the rule.

You do understand what a generalization is right?

Do you?

Do you understand what a blanket statement is?

Do you understand how many hall of fame players were undrafted or free agents when they changed teams?

I guess you don't always get your stars through the draft? Huh?

Not going to have a stupid argument because you can't see the obvious. If it was unclear before, it's been clarified now - generalization.

It's only stupid because your clearly wrong. You CAN'T say your wrong so you backpedal.

I'd have more respect for you now if you said you overspoke and overstepped. Instead you'll cover your eyes and hope the bogey man goes back under the bed. Stop hiding under your "generalization" bed sheets. That standard has never been good enough for any poster you call out. Don't make yourself an exception.

I would say that the vast majority of NFL HOFers got into the league via the draft.

It's pretty well known that the team that "wins" in FA season more often than not loses in the season that actually counts.

The Texans made respectable runs at some notable FAs and I'm glad they didn't sign some of them to ridiculous contracts. If Solder were all that and a bag of chips, BB would've made damn sure he never made it to FA.
FWIW, I would like the Texans to sign Eric Reid and have a stupid good secondary. I've gotten to the point that I jdgaf about the anthem protests. The NFL screwed that pooch in just about every way imaginable.

I wouldn't mind the Eric Reid signing. For Eric, it would come down to...paycheck?...knee?....paycheck?....knee? If the Texans were to sign him, I think the idea of playing along side his brother Justin while having his NFL payday resumed would far outweigh the alternative. The addition of Eric would make this secondary nasty. I'm on board DocBar.

They've also got a Lombardi because they were very active in the FA/Trade market.

I don't think that alone had anything to do with them winning the SB. Did it help? Absolutely. But remember a few years back when the Eagles went on its FA spending spree? Was it Vick? One of those acquired FA's called the team the All Stars, or Champions or some crap like that. They didn't even make the playoffs that year.

I think free agency is just as much a crap shoot as the draft. Guy plays his arse off in contract year then gets a FA contract and finds out the grass isn't always greener on the other side. I don't know, I can see both sides. I just disagree with your statement that was bolded, to a certain degree.

Ah yes. The quote time forgot. It was Vince Young and the Dream Team.

It’s going to be so much fun around here when the Texans are winning and a bunch of new fair weather blood shows up...

Things will be said like:

“I am not a Texans fan. I root for Watson.”

And my favorite:

“I have been a Texans fan since 2012.”

The deadline has passed for any free agent signings that will affect the awarding of compensatory picks in next year’s NFL draft, and the Patriots and Rams are the teams that look to be in the best shape for 2019 compensatory picks.

The Patriots are always smart about getting compensatory picks, which are awarded to teams that lose more free agents, and especially more expensive free agents, than they sign. It’s no surprise to see the atop the list of compensatory picks.

With this schedule they should win 10-11 games next yr.

They'll come out of the wood work

I hope so. Gives us something more to talk about instead of usual.

I can only read so much about the mismanagement of this team, how someone would have done it better, and the fact checking.

Are we those people in horror films waiting for potential victims?

Yes. Yes we are.

He took more money to play elsewhere. He is a pro athlete who doesn’t have any loyalty to this team just like the rest of them.

Franchise tagging him could have given them time to work out a long term deal as well. Transition tag could have allowed them the opportunity to match any offer Bouye received. It’s a business and the team had options to keep him but chose not to pursue said options. Opting instead to let him test the market and find out another team will give him more $.
Please remind me of another time a SLOT CB got a franchise tag. Not a CB1 or CB2 but a slot CB... I've not heard of such but maybe you know of a time it happened.

Bouye is an outside CB.
he is now. was he CB1 or CB2 with the Texans?
....other than being pressed into such service because of injury I mean.

I think we've had this discussion before... but I don't believe RAC would start Bouye over J-Jo or Kareem Jackson or Kevin Johnson to be the CB1 or CB2. And Jacksonville paid him like a CB2.

And, for the record, I believe, and have said so before, Bouye went straight mercenary to take the most money.
Also, don't forget we had to set some cash aside to pay Hopkins so we couldn't just straight break the bank for a #3 (or #4 in our defense) CB.

Some posters have a hard line policy against taking players that have been backups at any point in the past (jk steelb)

But I just want the best players. Bouye was a backup and when he got his opportunity was our best CB. Franchise tag worthy to buy time to make a long term deal. Especially when factoring in Jo Jo/K Jax aging at the time let alonw K Jo’s injuries.

You know, what has been underplayed in this "we must sign top F/A" discussion is whether our coaching staff thought they'd be a good fit in our offensive/defensive schemes or would mesh in the locker room.

How many times have we heard "he's a good teammate" from O'Brien. So that's very important to him. Maybe some of these guys you F/A watchers are coveting don't meet O'Brien's "good locker room guy" or "good teammate" definition. Maybe the coaches just believe they won't fit the schemes here.

We signed a guy once - thanks to McNair - without running it by O'Brien (or so he says) and ended up with Osweiler. I doubt it happens again.

The 3rd CB is a starter in the 2018 NFL...they play well more than a pure in-the-box safety, a fat NT, or run stuffing LB. Just to note also, many if not most teams don't oversimplify the CB role a slot or outside only.

The conversation was about how teams build talent. (Brees and Warner weren't Texans either.)
Warning, opinion ahead....
:D
There is no 'one size fits all' method to building a solid, contending team. Daniel Synder tried to buy a team a while back by signing a bunch of high-priced F/As. That fell completely flat on it's face.
There aren't enough picks year-to-year to flip a team from crapola to contender only via the draft.
It has to be a strategic mix.
Build the core of your team thru the draft and fill in missing pieces via free agency.
If you need more than 4 or 5 F/A starters from year to year then you've been screwing up the draft
OR
you haven't been staggering your contracts to keep your core starters from hitting free agency during the same off-season.

(Cough) Don’t forget Ed Reed. Two for two on the “high priced top tier free agent” market. (Cough)

To be scary, Giacomini was almost certainly here at the request/on recommendation of our OL coach.

Not getting a new OL coach is my botched opportunity nit with the Texans off-season.
We don’t have a new OL coach YET. What makes you think OL coaches are exempt from the clean up operations Gaine is coordinating? It may happen soon for all we know. I don’t see Gaine giving anyone a pass.

We were first in the Brock Osweiler bidding war.

And Ed Reed.

And Ahman Green.

Did I miss the parade when we signed them?

Yep, they're donig everything possible to put the best team possible on the field.

You keep telling yourself that. One day you might even convince yourself that it's true.

being a young whippersnapper, you don't remember when New England & even Pittsburgh were some of the worst team in the league, but it goes in cycles my friend.

remember not that long ago the Ram's were the best team in football.

Not that long ago that Buffalo went to 4 straight Super Bowls

I remember all of that, except for the Steelers. I started really paying attention to football when I was 8 years old in 1990. Houston sports really broke me in with "The Comeback". Then spoiled me with the Rockets. Lol Didn't know I'd have to wait another 22 years to see another city championship.

Tell me again why you aren’t a GM if you have all the answers? If your crystal ball can tell the future give me winning lottery numbers.

For real you knock them for not getting FAs. When they do you say they aren’t the ones you want. You say they don’t spend money in FA, but when they do you say it’s not enough. You say they aren’t willing to outbid another team for a player in FA, but when they do you STILL aren’t happy.

You are just targeting Solder because you know they were bidding for him, but we were never a realistic option given his sons treatment and his desire to stay close to his current hospital. This is the same player people said would/could consider retirement. And do you think he is 100% focused? Do you think his attention could be elsewhere? It’s even the possibility he retired early.

You are being obtuse.

I'm content bouye wasn't resigned because money was being held for the dream of Romo being a texan. Nothing else to say. Bouye signed in jaguar land before Romo opted to retire. Man in charge of that no longer here. Carry on

PS we got got Jordan at qb as a result

Warning, opinion ahead....
:D
There is no 'one size fits all' method to building a solid, contending team. Daniel Synder tried to buy a team a while back by signing a bunch of high-priced F/As. That fell completely flat on it's face.
There aren't enough picks year-to-year to flip a team from crapola to contender only via the draft.
It has to be a strategic mix.
Build the core of your team thru the draft and fill in missing pieces via free agency.
If you need more than 4 or 5 F/A starters from year to year then you've been screwing up the draft

Not sure if/why this post is directed at me. Seems like you picked up on a string of posts between cak and I but didn't see the origin and maybe missed the context?

Your post is fairly traditional ideology in building a team and I agree with it.
