Dez Bryant Cut

Cowboys refute Dez Bryant’s “Garrett’s guys” comments
April 17, 2018, 9:12 PM EDT

Jason Garrett, Jason Witten, Sean Lee, Dak Prescott and Travis Frederick all refuted Dez Bryant‘s “Garrett’s guys” comment, joining Stephen Jones in wondering what the receiver is talking about.

“Friday was an emotional day for all of us,” Witten said, via Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News. “I don’t know what all that [Garrett’s guys] is about. . . . There’s really nothing there.”

In an interview with the NFL Network on Friday, Bryant accused “Garrett’s guys” of working against him. He didn’t name names other than to refer to players who wear the captain’s “C.” Lee, Witten and Prescott were among the team’s captains last season.

“It’s tough to see because of the type of player he was,” Lee said. “Me and Dez came in together. He’s one of the best players I ever played with. He’s a guy that I fed off his passion.. . . . Dez is a dominant football player, and he’s gonna continue to be a dominant football player.”

The Cowboys released Bryant, saving them $8 million against the salary cap. So for the first time since 2009, the Cowboys are searching for a new No. 1 receiver.

“Its a challenging situation,” Garrett said. “A lot of different factors go into these kind of decisions. The guidepost for all this is what’s in the best interest of the Dallas Cowboys. We wish Dez nothing but the best going forward. He’s a special guy. I love him.”

Bryant’s former teammates also wished him well and insist they do not have a splintered locker room.

“Absolutely not,” Witten said. “My job and everybody else’s is to go play and try to lead the best we can by example. There’s nothing to that.”

The only reasons Dez is still getting consideration from Texans fans is that he's a big name (for now) and we still need a real, every down #2 guy who isn't hurt all the time. Fuller has been fantastic and better than I ever imagined he would be. Ellington has been a win and turned out much better than expected. Neither one is what you could call an every-down dependable compliment to Hopkins. They're weapons but neither one of them looks to me like a guy you can go through a complete NFL schedule counting on to be ready to go every week so that other guy still eludes us. He's a Kevin Walter type maybe but hopefully a little faster? Possibly an Anquan Boldin or Steve Smith type later in their careers when they were just reliable as hell possession receivers. Maybe he's a TE that can be relied upon to catch and get some separation like OD used to. We need to find that guy and then mix in Fuller and Ellington to cause a meltdown in the secondary trying to figure out how to cover everybody. With Watson buying time and extending plays like he does that's all we need. One more guy like that to make us unstoppable (IMO).

I heard from a reliable source that Dez Bryant is leaning towards signing with the Houston Texans. But I don't want to jinx it so I'll just say that he'll end up signing with the Ravens just to anti-jinx what I heard.

Stay patient my friends. When the breaking news "Dez to Houston" comes to fruition, and if he becomes a Houston Texans player, then I'll celebrate. But for now I'm going to lay low and just hope for the best.

I'm not on the Dez hype train. Suspect hands, terrible routes, locker room and family issues means he's a solid NO for me.
You're very knowledgeable and I respect your opinions most of the time, but I believe you are clearly wrong here. Dez Bryant is a passionate player and a tremendous talent. There's a reason why some of the best players from the Texans have been heavily recruiting him for the past several days. We must embrace Dez's addition, if and when it happens. It could be soon.

On the optimistic side with Dez. His film is better than Seantrel Henderson’s the last time Henderson played meaningful snaps :)

Wouldn't be the first time I was wrong lol. There's also a good reason why Dallas, with all their needs at WR, cut him. How do you feel about his route running, catching, and locker room presence?
If he were to become a Texan, I'd support him just like WFV. I'll support him but will continue to critique him as well.

You do know this doesn't make any sense whatsoever. If that was the case, they wouldn't never gave him a second contract in which was top receiver money at that.

Why do ya'll stick to a certain narrative as if it was factual?

Dez fell out of grace with the Cowboys because him and Dak wasn't getting along. And as far as those drops, most of them were because of piss poor ball placement, quite a few would've gotten that man killed.

He was worth that contract in 2015, not now. He'll be 30 this season. Facts are that his game is slipping/has slipped. He's not the monster he was for those 3 seasons.

His crappy routes and questionable hands aren't solely a result of Dak. Dez probably runs the best dig route in the league but the rest of his route tree leaves a lot to be desired. That's always been a negative for him. I do acknowledge that Daz and Dak weren't on the same page last year. Are we expecting him to sync with DW4 after one offseason when he had 2 years with Dak and still couldn't make it work?

If the ball hits the WR's hands that's on the WR, not the QB. Same rule applies to WFV, Nuk, and every other WR.

This is Eric Moulds all over again IMO.

Hey, if they sign him I'm on board and hoping for the best. I really am. I want it to work out just like everyone else does if it happens.

I wanted David Carr to be the franchise (Would have taken Peppers).
I wanted Travis Johnson to pan out (Would have taken Derrick Johnson).

I wanted Dom Capers to be our version of Tom Landry but it turned out he was just our version of Dom Capers. Same is true with Gary Kubiak.

I wanted Richard Smith & Frank Bush (each in his turn) to be the next Wade Phillips and Romeo Crennel but that didn't happen and we ended up having to settle for Wade Phillips and Romeo Crennel.

I wanted Matt Leinart and Brandon Weeden to show us they weren't the problem at their previous NFL stop but that didn't happen.

I wanted Tom Savage to show us he was the next Tom Brady but he just ended up being the next Dave Ragone.

I wanted Mike Vrabel to be a dynamic young replacement for Romeo but we had to settle for getting Romeo back and beating Vrabel twice a year.

If we sign Dez Bryant I'll want him to be that guy who goes to another team and makes the people who cut him look like fools but he's probably going to make us look like the Colts after they signed Andre Johnson or the Texans after they signed Eric Moulds. I sure hope not though. Just once it would be nice to look like the Ravens after they signed Steve Smith.

i absolutely know for a fact that the texans have thought about dez bryant. dez bryant to houston is all over the news everywhere. and we all know that where there is smoke there is fire. theres a reason why there is so much talk about dez to houston.

The only chatter on the web is because of a couple of player tweets...hardly a hot rumor mill. In fact there hasn't been any rumors of Texans F.O. interest.

Yeah I bet the conversation went like this:

Cal: Hey Brian! What do you think about Dez?

Brian: No.

Cal: But...

OB: He said no.

Signs 5 yr/$12M rookie contract:
45-561-6
63-928-9
92-1382-12
93-1233-13
88-1320-16

Signs 5 yr/$70M contract:
31-401-3
50-796-8
69-838-6

That second contract was for the value he provided in his first five years. He did not provide that value in the ensuing years, thus leading to termination of the new contract.

As far as drops and ball placement, Prescott did have four putrid games last year but he still finished #4 in the NFL in QBR. And he was #3 as a rookie.

Efficiency numbers for top four targeted receivers the last two years:

2017:
Williams - 67.9% Catch Rate (7.28 Yards per Target) $2.3M
Witten - 72.4% Catch Rate (6.44 Yards per Target) $12.2M
Bryant - 52.3% Catch Rate (6.35 Yards per Target) $17M
Beasley - 57.1% Catch Rate (4.98 Yards per Target) $4.5M

2016:
Williams - 72.1% Catch Rate (9.74 Yards per Target) $1.9M
Beasley - 76.5% Catch Rate (8.50 Yards per Target) $3.4M
Bryant - 52.1% Catch Rate (8.29 Yards per Target) $13M
Witten - 72.6% Catch Rate (7.08 Yards per Target) $5.9M

Clearly the passing game took a step back last year, but Bryant was only the third most efficient target each year. And he basically makes what the other three guys make combined. Why pay for that?

So I guess Prescott was throwing darts to all the other guys but he was just leaving Dez out to dry?

It's pretty clear where the facts are and where the narrative is...

Never thought he was that good even when he was at the top of game. He was always just a guy whose measurable put him over the top for a few years more than anything else. I knew as soon as that slipped he'd be become a mediocore WR.

We are in that day in age where if you talk loud enough, you'll get people to listen and believe what you're saying..

" Catch me outside " girl, Alex Jones, etc.

Dez Bryant is in that same category. He talks at an elite status but he's nowhere near elite.

Nobody is saying Dez is or was elite. Some just think he would add depth to our receivers position. He would also be a nice weapon for Watson to use in the redzone.

No, but you just shot down several of the glaring physical weaknesses and flaws he currently has displayed at receiver over the last two seasons as if none of it ever happened or got exposed. With that being said, you haven't put out any type of solid argument of where the Texans could position him at in order for him to have an effective role in this offense where he brings something to the table that we don't currently already have. You've pretty much just argued on " hype of name recognition" to suggest that he'd be a great addition here. And none of that even addresses the complications of his perception of what his value is from a contract perspective which is why he currently was cut. The Cowboys didn't even bother trying to restructure, because they knew they weren't willing to pay anything close to what he was going to demand. The Texans would be just as foolish to.

I think that's why he struggled as much as he did last season, because he didn't have the multiple fundamentals to stay productive all over the field once those measurables were no longer as superior athletically. I wish he could honestly. Dez was a fun player to watch.

What??? You don't know what the Cowboys were thinking or the reason why they didn't restructure.

And I'm not trying to build up a case to for or against. If the Texans do chose to bring him in, he will be welcomed by the players and staff. We the fans do not have a say in the manner. I know Hopkins and Badger are talking to Gaines and team on his behalf.

Solid argument. Wow some of you'll be on it for real.

I dunno is that maybe something like having a big hat but no cattle ?

Umm no it wasn’t. They took several just like that away from many other WRs including a couple from our guys earlier that year.
I remember watching that game and my daughter called. Had to go pick her up from a friend's. Jumped in my truck to go get her after that catch. Put on the game and the cowboy radio crew were talking and they were convinced the call was gonna be a touchdown and the challenge back fire on packers . I heard the referee call on air and cracked up laughing.

What could have been for the cowboys...

After all of this, the Cowboys should let Dez Bryant go

".................................When this off-season began and talk of a pay cut swirled, Dez had leverage. The Dallas Cowboys' addition of Spare 1 and Spare 2 at wide receiver changes that.

Despite love language from the new receivers coach and the Chief Optimist in Charge — Jerry — the Cowboys' actions are telling the former darling receiver exactly what they think of him.

Start with the cryptic words from Garrett and Stephen earlier this off-season, and then go to the Cowboys' jumping into the Manager's Special rack of NFL free agency when they added receivers Deonte Thompson and Allen Hurns.

All you need to know about Thompson is that he played for two teams last season, Chicago and Buffalo. The Bears and the Bills are two teams whose passing offenses were worse than Dallas'. Chicago finished 32nd in passing, Buffalo 31st, and the Cowboys just plucked away one of their receivers.

Thompson caught 38 passes last season. Hurns, who was with Jacksonville last season, had one more reception last year than Thompson.

Right now, Dak Prescott must be thinking what we all know: Dez Bryant is still his best choice on the outside.

Nonetheless, the Cowboys have intentionally created an awkward situation for any future team meetings or practice huddles involving Dez.

The Cowboys have to cut Dez Bryant.

If they thought Dez was an issue before, just wait until his feelings are hurt, or he's been devalued.

And, assuming Dez is dumped, if the Cowboys didn't think they had a true No. 1 receiver in 2017, just wait 'til 2018.

Even if Dez accepts a pay cut, this relationship is now fractured to the point not even Jerry's best sales pitch can save it.

Dez is an emotional soul who feels everything, and Jerry can't change what Eight-Eight sees: His Cowboys don't love him the same way.

Specifically, the head coach and The Sheriff, Stephen Jones, don't want Dez anymore. Offensive coordinator Scott Linehan surely has a vote in this matter, too.

In the collective minds of the Cowboys' "brain trust" (a contradiction in terms if there ever was one), Dez is the former trophy girlfriend who was all kinds of crazy but just so "hot" they could deal with tantrums and the emotion.

Before he was drafted out of Oklahoma State, NFL types warned the world, and Jerry, to stay away from Dez for exactly these reasons. Among others. Jerry grabbed him with the 24th pick in 2010.

A little personality has never scared Jerry. But that was in 2010.

We are in 2018, and Dez will turn 30 this season.

As a receiver, Dez was never going to age well. He was never a beautiful route runner with gorgeous hands, like Larry Fitzgerald. Dez is fearless and physical. That type of player doesn't transition well after 30
............................................"

I'll feel better going to NE and Tennesse with Dez on board.

There is no other catching threat than Hopkins. I have no clue what were doing at TE and slot WR.

IMHO Dez is a good investment if you wanna go toe to toe with the top Dogs. Not 2 years from now, but 2018. If it does not work out who cares cause Gaines Draft will not help us till then anyways. To boot were dont have a pick till 68....... soo.

Gaine should know this and should be putting all the effort to winning now.

Purely hypothetical take I know... but say we had another pass catcher on the roster capable of getting 7 tds in 4 games played with Watson and it wasn't Hopkins. Would you then concede that we just might have a catching threat other than Hopkins on this roster?

Yeah now that the catch rule has been cleaned up the helmet rule will be the new uproar.

One controversy replaces by another

Regardless of new or old rules, the guy didn’t have possession when we came down with it. Just my homer opinion.

I do find humor in the fact the Cowboys made a big deal about giving him number 88...

In presenting the new rule that pass was one specifically pointed to as now clearly being a catch.

Yea I know. It doesn’t matter to me. My homer opinion.

The guy fell to the ground and didn’t have control of the ball.

It’s not like I am making an anti-Vaxer argument.

It was a catch in general, but at the time it wasn't due to the NFL rules that most would agree were pretty bad at the time. It would be a catch now.
