The Texans had the 5th most $$$ to spend at the grocery store, but only shopped in the day old discount and generic aisles. And when they went to pickup a nice steak, the meat department was sold out.

The store's not closed, yet. Maybe they can still find something to buy?
 
Let’s just hope Texans never put themselves into a position again where they feel need to pay big free agent money then turn around following year and give up high second rounder just to have that same cap space back again :rake:

Well, they got saved from paying prime rib prices for that nice cut. Outside of that one big steak that you might have to throw out, lots chicken breast, pork chops and ham at what looks to be regular prices. Could be better than it looks if I thought I trusted the cooks more.

Former Patriots' special teams standout Johnson Bademosi reached agreement with the Texans on a two-year, $6.25 million contract, per source. Once again he becomes highest-paid special teams player in the NFL, but he also has shown ability to play CB, with three starts in 2017.

He's around 64% on catchable balls.
He's also a fairly big body at 6'1"/2" (depending on which site you trust) and 215pounds - while being able to run a 4.45 40.
Has to be respected on the football field.

Coates needs to catch enough that he has to be covered; not allowing his defender to cheat. I doubt he does much but we will see. Needs to make roster.

.................and everyone needs to stay realistic..........some will work out...........some will not. It will take 2 seasons to build this roster to where we would all like it and feel comfortable. Meanwhile, there will be lots of evaluating, sifting, sorting, shifting and horsetrading............just like a real team.:texflag:

Although he is pictured in a Pats uni, he was claimed after the Browns waived him. The Pats released him after he had offseason finger surgery in 2017.

Lengel, 27, first entered the league as a UDFA with the Bengals in 2015. In 2016, he hooked on with the Patriots where he caught his only NFL touchdown to date. Last year, he was waived/injured by the Pats and found his way to the Browns practice squad. He earned a promotion midway through the year and saw time in a December loss to the Bears.

Of note is that Engel essentially missed the entire 2012 and 2013 seasons due to back-to-back ACL ruptures of the same right knee. That puts him at ~20% risk of blowing out his other knee sometime in the future.

Mancz has an original round tender and as a UDFA, another team could sign him to an offer sheet. the Texans would have the option to match. There would no compensation rewarded back to the Texan.

Safety Tyrann Mathieu, aka the Honey Badger, is the Texans' most high-profile addition of the offseason and coach Bill O'Brien is excited about the versatility he brings to the secondary.

Imagine what the Texans' starting lineup would look like if regular season – and not the offseason program – had kicked off Monday at Houston Methodist Training Center.

With players reporting for two weeks of conditioning before they're allowed to go on the field with coaches, this is a good time to look at what the Texans' lineup might look like today.


If all players were healthy, it's safe to say the Texans would have a lot of returning starters on both sides of the ball and five new starters signed as free agents.

Coach Bill O'Brien said recently he's happy with what the Texans have done in free agency.

"I felt like we had to improve certain areas of the team, and we felt like we did that," O'Brien said. "If you have basically a checklist of areas that you have to improve and you get most of those areas covered in free agency, you can concentrate on other things in the draft.

"We felt like with the offensive line, the secondary (and) special teams, we added some good players -- good guys, tough guys. We're excited about it."


General manager Brian Gaine has signed nine free agents. The Texans don't have picks in the first two rounds of the April 26-28 draft that could produce rookies playing backup roles, barring injuries, of course. They have eight selections overall, including three in the third round.

Looking at the starting lineup if the season had started Monday, let's begin with an overhauled offensive line.

Deshaun Watson would return at quarterback, and the line would have four new starters to support center Nick Martin.

Three free agents – right tackle Seantrel Henderson (Buffalo) and guards Zach Fulton (Kansas City) and Senio Kelemete (New Orleans) – would join Martin and left tackle Julién Davenport.

"I feel good with where we're at," O'Brien said about his offensive line. "We added three guys in free agency.

"Seantrel Henderson? Feel really good about him coming off last year. (He) played at the end of last year (and) had a good Miami game. We feel like he can play right or left. We'll start him off on the right side.

"We feel real good about Zach Fulton. We'll start him off at guard, but he can play center if we want to move Nick Martin to guard. There's some versatility there."

Martin played center and guard at Notre Dame but has played center since he was drafted in the second round in 2016.

"Senio Kelemete, I was very impressed with him on tape," O'Brien said. "Tough guy. Can pull, athletic. We feel like we really added some talent there, and we're looking forward to getting to work with him."

If the season had started this week, the defense would have two new starters – strong safety Tyrann Mathieu (Arizona) and cornerback Aaron Colvin (Jacksonville).

Mathieu would line up with free safety Andre Hal. Colvin would start outside opposite Johnathan Joseph or Kevin Johnson. Kareem Jackson would continue to cover slot receivers.

Mathieu, the Honey Badger, was Gaine's most celebrated free-agent addition.

Like the free agent offensive linemen who were signed, the coaches like the versatility Mathieu and Colvin showed with the Cardinals and Jaguars.

"(Mathieu) is going to start off at safety, but his versatility is something that really appealed to us," O'Brien said. "We'll probably use him in other spots. He can play nickel. He played some corner at times.

"We (feel) really good about his ball skills (and) his tackling ability. He's a good blitzer. He's going to be a great addition in our locker room."

With the Jaguars last season, Colvin was one of the NFL's best inside cornerbacks. He excelled at covering slot receivers between cornerbacks Jalen Ramsey and A.J. Bouye.

With the Texans, Colvin will get a chance to play outside and inside.

"We coached against him two games a year (and were) very impressed with his ability," O'Brien said. "He's a tough guy, a smart player with quickness. He's able to play man-to-man coverage. He's smart in the zones, too."

The best news for the defensive backs, if the season started this week, is that the front seven would be healthy.

J.J. Watt and Christian Covington would flank nose tackle D.J. Reader on the defensive line. Outside linebackers Whitney Mercilus and Brennan Scarlett would return as bookends for Benardrick McKinney and Zach Cunningham.

Thinking about a healthy starting lineup, including the addition of five free agents, should get Texans' fans excited about next season. Selecting eight players in the draft should add to their excitement.

Strange omission (maybe contract negotiations didn't want to mention him?), I'm sure Scarlett is supposed to be Clowney. I've said it before and I'll say it again, if we went to a Wade-esque 5 man front that pushed Watt inside and used Clowney and Mercilus outside we'd have the best front in football. It becomes really hard to harass Watt when you have an elite rusher outside of him, and it lets Watt use his strength (his hands) to the fullest. It also keeps a 290lb player with a bad back from lining up at wide 9 thinking he's Von Miller - getting bent and cut awkwardly.

Watt being constantly hit by and pushing against 300 pound OL inside is going to be even more traumatic on his back. Either way, expect his back to be tested hard and often.

They should only use Watt 15-25 plays per game if they want him to last for a full season. IMHO
