All encompassing Bill O'Brien thread

What did they win and were they ever true contenders?

Do you really think that Schaub was going to beat Brady? If so, we were seeing football in 2 different lights. Even though you may be able to post some stats to prove differently, Schaub always shrunk under the bright lights.

Didn't Kubiak beat Brady with old Manning and Osweiler?

That 2012 team was definitely contention level. Almost beat Ravens with tj yates

Yep, with one of the greatest Wade Phillips coached defenses of all time.

You need to atleast reach an AFCCG to be considered a contender. We will never know if they would've done that with Schaub. He was known to crap the bed in big spots.

Agree to disagree, the way I see it is since 2010 either or both of Smith/Kubiak have been in charge of the Texans org and they were never going to be a championship quality team with those guys in the positions they were in. I said this at the time and that the Texans org was just wasting their time.

Yeah you did, along with the declaration Kubiak would never win a SB as HC. How'd that work out?

BTW, if a team doesn't reach a AFCCG they weren't true contenders

This is just stupid. Every season teams meet the eventual SB winner and fail. Doesn't mean they weren't contending. For a decade who won the SB was determined in the NFC between Dallas, SF and GB.

Oops, wait was that when you Oilers fans thought you were contenders?

Kubiak wasn't in charge of finding talent in Denver and Kubiak got lucky when his DC hire Joseph wasn't allowed to come to Denver by the Bengals and Kubiak had to settle for Wade as his DC.

For Kubiak to win a SB all he needed was an all time great DC/Defense and a HOF QB. Speaking of HOF QB's how many SB's did Kubiak win without a HOF QB?

But, you got Kubiak right and I got him wrong. He's a HOF HC, not just an avg HC. I mean look at his outstanding W-L record as a HC.

You're correct the Oilers weren't true contenders. True contenders dont choke away early rd playoff games.

are you insinuating those 3 are better coaches than the 3 I put up?

I'm not insinuating anything.

I'm just saying these guys won without a HOF QB.

Would Kubiak have all of those rings without HOF'ers Elway/Walsh etc... A great QB can mask alot of HC's deficiencies. (I would think you would agree with that statement.)

I do agree with that, but the HOF Qb Kubiak won with was a shell of his former self, and definitely not HOF caliber during any stretch of that season or post season.

you can say it was the stacked defense, but guess who also had stacked defenses and won. Harbaugh, Gruden, and Carroll

This should make some heads on here explode.

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap30...ive-bill-obrien-extension-hire-gm-brian-gaine

The Houston Texans took a big step toward creating long-term continuity Saturday.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported, per a source informed, the team signed coach Bill O'Brien to a four-year extension and hired new general manager Brian Gaine to a five-year contract. The new deals, which the team later confirmed, give the duo contracts with matching lengths.

"I'm delighted to get Brian as our new general manager and to have Bill's contract extended," team owner Bob McNair told the Houston Chronicle's John McClain. "Their deals will put them on the same track. Our goal is to win a Super Bowl, and we're all on the same page."

I worded that poorly. I meant OB brought Vrabel in. Several NFL teams think the Texans have good assistant coach as several are interviewing with other teams.

It appears to me that King has done a good job with our LBs. I hope we are able to hang on to him.

:coffee:

Well, only thing I can say is this is now on OB. Win or lose, he will be most accountable. And Gaine, being OB's guy, will sink or swim right along with him. If OB goes, I think Gaine goes too....and you know who will be right there to re-assume his GM role.

Obrien is going to put a dent in the crow population.

Gonna be lots of them eaten in the next couple of years by his detractors.

But.....always a but... I have been wrong one time before. :)

Can we at least get through the offseason before predicting failure? I'm really looking forward to the offseason now.

I don't care as long as Deshaun is taking snaps. Plus somewhere in the Rockies Gary Kubiak is having his morning coffee, reading this news having a snorty chuckle that makes all the nearby birds empty their roosts, and gives a toast to the Houston Texans. Bless your heart Bob McNair.

In Deshaun I Trust.

O'Brien on the McNairs "We’ve had great meetings over the last 3 weeks. We have a tremendous amount of trust N each other. Colleen and I are ecstatic 2 be in Houston. Even though we’re coming off a tough season, we feel like we have a fantastic future here. We're so excited."

Bill O'Brien “It about being in a place where we knew we could win because we had the support of ownership. It was also about improving communication within the organization. The McNairs have been great communicating what they want. There’s been a really good give-and-take.”

Wait..What...steelb likes this post. WTF I'm totally confused now.

I don't get the "OBrien is gonna show you guys and make you eat crow" argument.

Deshaun Watson finally made OBrien look competent, and mostly going off script and improvising.

Before Watson name an OBrien signature moment or game. Seems like he's known for his stupid QB carousels and idiotic clock use etc... I mean we've gone down this road.

If you want argue continuity, cool. Don't tell me this man is some special coach because that ability or lack of has alreasy been on display for 4 years I don't need 5 more to make up my mind on that. Hopefully Deshaun stays healthy and Buttchin comes out looking like a genius if we can win a championship. Im indifferent. It all will boil down to #4. That's it. That's our chance. Not more botched play calls, goal line brain farts or 4th down ***** play calling.

Seems easy to ***** about the Bob taking Hoyer.
Who was available?

Locker?
Mallet?
Sanchez?
Matt Moore
Shaun hill?
I guess if we picked any of those QBs at the time. We would be discussing that qb instead of Hoyer. I believe at the time Hoyer was picked because of familiarity with bobs system.

Draft was Winston and Marita going 1 and 2. No way we would have moved up.

Grayson went to the saints at 75.

That year for qbs was slim pickens

Not defending Bob on this but people aren'
Looking at the big picture

We took Johnson and McKinney with 1st 2 picks.

He could’ve kept Fitzpatrick.

This is top five stupidest decisions by the franchise - and that’s saying something.

Or in hindsight next year this may be one of the five stupidest post on TT on the Obrien extension, and that is saying something.

We shall see.

I get as frustrated as anyone here, (except maybe for Thorn). But if I couldn't get over it and look forward to things getting better I'd start watching soccer or heaven forbid basketball.

:coffee:

Who was available?

Carr
Garropolo
Prescott
Bridgewater
Bradford (trade)
Cousins and Tyrod Taylor have been rumored to be on the market as well

If we we're willing to trade way up:
Wentz
Goff
Winston

And even if you find a reason against every one, what justifies starting Mallet over Fitz? And then Hoyer over Fitz? Mallet over Hoyer? And Osweiler of course. Savage over Watson?

OBrien can't even identify the best QB on his own roster.

And keeping Savage around for years and then going with Savage over Watson and Oh yeah changing quarterbacks on a whim like a finicky 12 year old girl.

But this is all relitigated bullshit and none of the cultists care.

So we should look past poor decisions because you just want to be optimistic? Nice logic, thanks.

Carr and Prescott have both regressed, Cousins and Taylor are iffy at best. Bradford is a huge injury concern and there are reports that the Texans were high on both Jimmy G and Teddy B but got snookered. The other three weren't worth the price of trading up, imo. I was never a Winston fan at all and I see why now.

Revisionist bullshit. Savage was clearly better than Watson in the preseason.
