College Football Random Thought Of The Day

Louisville is a classic example of a team that has given up in their last few games. They don't even look like they are trying to tackle or block, and it's been several games of this now.

They've been a one-man team for quite a while now. As a team they have regressed this year. It's almost like Jackson does so much that everyone else just chills and waits for him to win the game for them.

Well, Jackson is also horribly inaccurate. He routinely misses wide open guys. So, I think you have a combination of kids giving up and defenses learning that all they have to do is stop the read option and force Jackson to throw.

This was why I criticized Charles Kelly, DC at FSU, for getting killed by Louisville. Jackson missed so many throws in that game but never could Kelly scheme a way to stop a no-huddle read option.

Report: Browns strongly considering taking Trubisky with No. 1 pick
Jack Browne Mar 2, 2017 2:45 PM
Don't lock Myles Garrett into the No. 1 overall slot in this year's draft just yet.

The Cleveland Browns are strongly considering drafting former North Carolina quarterback Mitch Trubisky with the top pick, league sources told Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com.

More to come.

Bowling Green kicker is challenged to hit a 53-yarder for a scholarship ...
Bowling Green spokesman Jason Knavel told Yahoo Sports that Suder was having a really good practice, so head coach Mike Jinks decided to challenge him to a 53-yarder with a scholarship on the line. It was completely unplanned.

“Coach had two scholarships still available for kids this year and Jake was one of the few kids who they had on their short list as a possibility for those two. There had been no final determination on exactly how those scholarships would be given out,” Knavel told Yahoo Sports via email. “So, at practice, they were kicking and Jake was nailing them. So when they got to the long one (53 yards out), Coach Jinks out of the blue told him, ‘Knock this one down for a full scholarship.’ It really was organic and out of the blue.”

Ice cold..

And here ... we ... go ...

1. Alabama (52 first-place votes)
2. Ohio State (3)
3. Florida State (4)
4. USC (2)
5. Clemson
6. Penn State
7. Oklahoma
8. Washington
9. Wisconsin
10. Oklahoma State
11. Michigan
12. Auburn
13. LSU
14. Stanford
15. Georgia
16. Louisville
17. Florida
18. Miami FL
19. USF
20. Kansas State
21. Virginia Tech
22. West Virginia
23. Texas
24. Washington State
25. Tennessee

Always lean toward believing the preseason poll is sh*t and a hindrance to having a legitimate football ladder to climb. But, I'm also a compete and utter sucker for the hype of a new season. Ugh.

Alabama soph defensive starter shot:

Alabama defensive lineman Raekwon Davis suffered “a minor gunshot injury” in the parking lot of a Tuscaloosa bar early Sunday. It was first reported by The Tuscaloosa News.

Davis was hospitalized with a leg injury that he received from a stray bullet. Investigators told The Tuscaloosa News he was not targeted at 3217 10th Street, just off Stillman Boulevard.

“The victim told investigators he was standing outside of Bar 17 when he heard several gunshots and realized he had been shot in the right leg,” Homicide unit commander Gary Hood told The Tuscaloosa News. “The victim was uncooperative with investigators.”

Investigators recovered several shell casings from the parking lot.

So looks like that BYU-LSU game is gonna be played in the supedome in NOLA instead of NRG this weekend.

Has Kevin Sumlin been fired yet? If not then WTF?
Texas A&M Football‏@AggieFootball 16 hours ago
The Aggies’ record on the road/at neutral sites is 21-11 under @CoachSumlin, 2nd best in the SEC from 2012-present #12thMan

Well, at least this year, no schools will be trying to poach the UH head coach.
Poor Opie is in over his head.

I hope the Houston Cougars win two of their final four games to at least be bowl eligible. This season doesn't have to be a total waste. I still want a bowl win.

We were trounced in our last road game: A 45-17 loss at unranked Tulsa. We'll probably be shellacked at #16 South Florida next Saturday. Charlie Strong has those boys at USF playing excellent football. They could be a perfect 7-0 if they beat Tulane tonight. I actually wanted U of H to pursue Charlie Strong last off-season. I knew he'd be a great fit coming back to the Athletic American Conference (AAC). He has the inside track when it comes to recruiting in this conference. It just carried over from his days at Louisville.

I really thought this weekend would show the difference between a Mark Richt coached team and a Kirby Smart coached team.

I guess it did, but not in the way I expected. Looks like I get to keep being pissed at UGA for firing Richt a little while longer.

Richt may not be elite because he is excessively conservative on offense, which has cost his teams at times, but he has always been a great coach. He's in the upper tier.

The dude has been a HC for 17 years and only ONE TIME has he had a record worse than 8-5. Has had trouble against rivals and winning the big ones but has never missed a bowl and this will be his 13th time finishing ranked at the end of the season. Any school could do worse.

UGA lives under some delusion that they were once this great school on par with Alabama because they rode Herschel Walker to a national title once.

Richt is not only a great coach, he is more importantly a great human being with the right priorities in life. I suspect every kid he has coached is a better man for it. I am enjoying Miami's success.... hopefully it continues.

Don't know if you saw the ND game but he seems to have shed some of that conservatism. Crazy 4th and nine call in that game that led to a TD.

He is a great man I've heard from a guy who went to church with him. A leader of men and a great teacher. A great football coach? Above avg but not great.

Smart will get there give him a little time.

I think he's going to be the next great HC.

Richt is a Top 10 coach. I guess it just depends on the dividing line of "great".

Agree Kirby looks to have a great upside, but man was he unprepared this week. Time will tell if that's an aberation or not. This year has been a particularly easy schedule.

So the college coach carousel is spinning rather wildly already with no end in sight ...

Open Jobs:

Arizona St
Arkansas
Florida- Dan Mullen
Georgia Southern
Mississippi St.
Nebraska
Ole Miss- Matt Luke
Oregon St.
South Alabama
Tennessee
Texas A&M
UCF

UCLA- Chip Kelly
UTEP

... with some good/great hires so far in Kelly, Frost, and Mullen.

And gotta finally admit, after year after year of swirling rumor and negotiation, it looks like Jimbo's relationship with Florida St. may be at a stalemate at best. As a Noles fan this is a bummer. Guy took over mightily for St. Bobby and has done wonders for not only the x's and o's but the infrastructure/facilities of the program. But, after all the head knocking between he and his agent Jimmy Sexton and the school president and AD I'm tempted to just want to finally put an end to this once and for all. Emotion talking a bit there sure, also the end of a long hard year and knowing the school would be the best job on the market if he left the thought of luring a Chris Peterson or Justin Fuente to Tallahassee in a less headache-inducing relationship sounds interesting at the least. Next few weeks should be fun, meh.

Anyone else watching this all unfold and/or have a rooting interest they're keeping an eye on?

Surely an Aggie fan or two on the edge of their seat around here, ya?

I'd love to see Kevin Sumlin end up at UTEP.
He's a heck of a coach and I hope he stays in Texas.

He'd make the Conference USA a lot more exciting by coaching the UTEP Miners. He had some good success recruiting in the Conference USA from 2008 to 2011 when he was the head coach for the Houston Cougars.

Going back to the C-USA could be good for him.
Less pressure to win and less stress than the SEC.

IMO, the Mullen decision is short sighted as hell. He just signed a new contract with Miss St and they had been patient with him through a 69-46 record. I will be shocked if he lasts longer than 2 years, surprised Florida didn't try to get Strong back, that would have made more sense.

SEC teams are in denial and think just because they play in the SEC and have a good year here or there they are a national brand who should be in the top 10, competing for a title every year. Nearly half of the SEC is going to have a new coach next year, just crazy.

Sumlin is another SEC head scratcher. A&M was 113-86 for their 16 years in the Big 12 before Sumlin, but Sumlin going 44-21 in the SEC is unacceptable? Enjoy being a bottom feeder again A&M.

Bret Bielema got what he deserved. He could have stayed at Wisconsin as long as he desired, ends up Wisconsin football is better then Bielema and Arkansas.

Nebraska is the clear winner by getting the hottest coaching prospect who happens to also be an alumni. I think Frost will get Nebraska back to playing like they did in the Big 12.

Chip Kelly will be interesting to watch at UCLA, obviously he is a difference maker.

Matt Campbell turned down Tennessee and signed a new contract with Iowa St so he's off the market. David Cutcliffe at Duke also turned Tennessee down.

Sumlin- watching his team blow that lead against a poor UCLA team was a pretty good synopsis of Sumlin's tenure. With Keenum/Manziel he was a great HC, without them not so much. Did he recruit Keenum/Manziel? Nope. # Frontrunner

Bielema- agreed

Kelly- Has no soul, I wish he was coaching UT.

Frost- Great young HC, I seriously doubt he will be able to revive the Osborne yrs.

The Rice Owls are also looking for a head coach after firing David Baliff. He's bee there eleven years and had his fair share of success and failures.

Rice was 1-11 overall and 1-7 in Conference USA play this season.

Bailiff was the Conference USA coach of the year in 2008 and 2013. He led the Owls to their first outright conference championship in 56 years in 2013, when the team finished 10-4.

Since 2015, Rice has failed to reach a bowl game and is 9-27 overall.

But Kevin Sumlin would be a great fit for either UTEP or Rice. He would stay in the state of Texas and come back to the Conference USA. He would be a great recruiter for either school. Although with Rice's higher academic standards he'd likely have to adjust a tad bit. He'd have an easier time recruiting players for UTEP.

I'd love to see Kevin Sumlin coach either team.
If he took the Rice Owls job I may even attend a few games.

Nebraska is obviously targeting Frost while Arizona State is apparently focused on Sumlin and Oregon State is honing in on current Cal OC and former Eastern Washington HC Beau Baldwin. Arkansas is apparently interested in former ASU HC Todd Graham. Tennessee is a dumpster fire.

Believe I took the ball and ran with something I read elsewhere. My dumb..

I read your post and assumed it was announced officially also. After Nebraska fired their coach it seems just a matter of time. Frost even said if Osburn called it would be hard to turn down, which in coach speak that is saying it is a done deal.

Phenomenal hire by Mississippi State to nab Joe Moorhead from Penn State. He worked miracles at Fordham and James Franklin was on the verge of getting fired at Penn State before hiring Moorhead (who completely turned the program around with his innovative offense).

Chip Kelly to UCLA is going to get the most hype but I think Moorhead to MSU is easily the best hire of the offseason.

With what appears to be Herm Edwards to ASU and all signs now pointing to Jimbo going to A&M, with FSU already targeting Willie Taggert, Charlie Strong, and Justin Fuente. Wild.

I have to echo @Mollywhopper about Jimbo. He’s done a great job with the program, and I will always appreciate that, but this constant butting of heads has got to end. We lost 3 commitments last night and it’s only going to get worse as long as there is no clarity. I’m ready to move on. That probably sounds like a spoiled fan, but I’d love to keep him if a) he was committed, and b) he would take a serious look at firing some of his assistants. What isn’t being talked about in the national media is that almost all of the good assistants at FSU have moved on to bigger jobs over the years and the only coaches left are the coaches nobody else wants to hire. Jimbo has never fired an assistant at FSU. The defensive coordinator is terrible and the offensive line coach is mediocre at best. I think Jimbo wants full control, which he essentially has, but I believe he has been pressured to make changes and he doesn’t like that. I think that’s been going on for 2 years now. He’s being stubborn. I keep hearing about facilities, but it’s been reported many times that FSU is committed to a football only, state of the art facility, but location and land acquisition has been the primary reason for its delay, not an unwillingness by FSU.

The way in which Jimbo is handling his exit has not been gracious. I believe he is knowingly sticking it to FSU to an extent. It’s been reported that recruits haven’t been contacted for over a month. He’s not even been selling the university out of respect, he just quit on that front. FSU can’t fire him either, he negotiated a buyout that prevents that.

Interesting tidbit here is that there is a rumor that he and A&M have been negotiating since September, which would partially explain the poor year, although I am sure the year was always going to be a down year regardless.

I’m not sure why FSU isn’t doing background work on Venables at Clemson. Perhaps they want someone with HC experience, but I’d still like to see them take a look.
