QB Brock Osweiler to start preseason opener for Cleveland Browns

Osweiler will make $775,000, or a little under the league minimum, as the Cleveland Browns remain on the hook for more than $15 million of Osweiler's 2017 salary.

I think Elway is right about Osweiler. He may not be a starter right now, but he is at least an upper range backup, and he may still have starter potential.

I think Osweiler's problem in Cleveland was Kizer or, perhaps, Hue Jackson's desperate hope that Kizer is ready to start. Since Kizer is seen as the future, Osweiler had no future with the Browns. Conceivably, he might have been used as a backup, and the first year was already paid for. But what about subsequent years? Those would have involved crazy money for a backup?

With the Broncos, it is different. Osweiler has a league minimum contract with the Broncos and my guess is that Elway understands the problem with Osweiler better than most and knows the basic reason for his inaccuracy. My bet is that the Broncos will have Osweiler practicing a shortened stride all year. He won't play much, and nothing much will likely happen on the field this year, but Elway will have an inside view of Osweiler's progress and if there is a chance for his success as a starter, he will know and will most likely be able to sign Osweiler to a favorable long term contract next year if he thinks there is hope.

Of course, there are people who think John Elway is a idiot. I am not one of them.

......

I think it's quite a bit more simple than that. Elway is fallible just like everyone else. He has locked on to something he sees that probably just isn't there. Brock is a pitcher, not a quarterback - he sucks. However, one thing that could help him as a Bronco is years developing a timing with their receivers, namely Thomas and Sanders. He's also playing for pennies and can be cut without costing anything since Siemian and Lynch are basically locked in. Brock for the Broncos is probably similar to Keenum for us - capable of showing up in an emergency and executing a very simple game plan because of familiarity.

I'd rather have a bag of Doritos as 3rd string quarterback, but that's just me.

Except for the silly crap, not a bad analysis, but I would demur slightly with the Keenum/Osweiler comparison. Keenum and Osweiler are two totally different quarterbacks. Keenum is a scrappy guy who is limited but sound mechanically and tends to play above his ability, and Osweiler is a guy who has all the measurables but has been inconsistent with his play due to mechanical flaws. It is understandable why some people would prefer Keenum as a backup; it is also understandable why a guy like Elway would tend to think he might be able to fix Osweiler.

Going to have to disagree with that. I'll admit I didn't watch a lot of Os in Denver, but after seeing him extensively in Houston, and how Hopkins numbers dropped significantly, I took a look back at the Denver WR numbers when OS was in. Demaryius Thomas had a huge drop in his catch rate with Os throwing the rock, just like Nuk did.

Os may be just backup material, but upper range backup I think not.

I think Osweiler's problem in Cleveland was Kizer or, perhaps, Hue Jackson's desperate hope that Kizer is ready to start.

Osweiler's problem is that he's not good. He has a long telegraphed windup and he can't put the ball where his receivers can make a play way more often than he does.

I don't think Elway is an idiot, but these guys do get it wrong occasionally. They're not perfect.

exactly! But it's more that that isn't it? 16 million for this year alone... how much did he make last year?

$21 million that season, with $4 million in base salary, $12 million as a signing bonus and another $5 million roster bonus (Of, course, a total $37 million guaranteed in his contract)

The Browns quarterback situation is so dire maybe they should have just kept Brock Osweiler. They wouldn't be any worse than 0-7 right now. They'd likely have a win or two. For that massive contract and money that they're paying him they may as well have gotten something, and I mean ANYTHING, out of him. Why did they have to let him go? Are they trying to go 0-16 this year?

The Browns' talented and stingy defense has played well enough to win at least three of their games this year. Their run defense is ranked 6th best in the league right now at only 83.7 rushing yards allowed per game. They held DeMarco Murray to 18 carries and 59 yards rushing in a 12-9 overtime loss against the Titans.

Pretty sure they got something out of him.

Next to Osweiler during breaks for the Broncos’ offense was starter Trevor Siemian, who piled up one costly mistake after another in Denver’s 29-19 loss to the Chiefs. Siemian had completed just 5-of-14 passes for 56 yards and two interceptions by halftime — “horrific,” his coach called the throws — while compiling an 8.9 quarterback rating.

Still, Osweiler sat.

It wasn’t until minutes after Denver’s third consecutive loss, the offense’s turnovers once again the culprit, that Broncos coach Vance Joseph presented the possibility that someone other than Siemian could get a chance to jumpstart the team’s stuck-in-the-mud offense.

Might the Broncos be ready to put that right arm of Osweiler to use?

A few bleary-eyed hours studying game film early Tuesday morning wasn’t enough time for Joseph to make that decision. But a choice between starting Siemian or Osweiler, in a game that could determine whether the Broncos maintain a fighting chance in the AFC playoff picture, is looming.

“Everything is being explored after losing three in a row and having five turnovers (Monday night),” Joseph said Tuesday afternoon. “I think it’s fair to evaluate everything there. With our team working so hard and our team putting in max effort yesterday and not having a chance to win the football game, I think it’s fair to evaluate the quarterback and all positions.”

Don't look now Texans' fans, the Brockster may be on the verge of starting his first 2017 regular season game and I wouldn't be surprised if John Elway is offering his input on this situation. Of course I'm joking here, Elway is Mr Bronco and he's as close as it gets to Jerry Joness in being the one person making the ultimate decision for any NFL team.
Elway is after all the guy we know for sure who was willing to pay the most for BO in the 2016 offseason. See we don't know if it was O'Brien, Smith, or the the owner himself who out bid Elway for BOs services?

Actually we don't know that Elway wouldn't have bid more. Oz never gave him a chance to counter.

Yea that's true isn't it. With the ego Elway allegedly has I just wonder if he would have permitted the Texans to outbid him for his boy had he had right of first refusal ?
Anyway it's been a real merry go round for the Brockster but his wallet sure got a lot fatter from the experience and how ironic would be if he ends up under center in Denver again ?

Denver Broncos head coach Vance Joseph has informed his team that Brock Osweiler will take over the starting quarterback duties over Trevor Siemian, the team announced on Wednesday

So now it's official, the Brockster is back in the saddle at Mile-high.

I wish him the best of luck except against the Texans.

So Basically they don’t have a qb.

He can't possibly play any worse than Simien can he?.............. **thinks back to 2016 :kubepalm:**.......Well yes...yes he can.

I wanted to bring McCoy in to coach Osweiler. I'm truly interested in how this will turn out.
