Dump O'Brien. The offense is on him.

There were only 5 QB's that had a 100+ QB Rating this past season. Outside of Dak as a rookie, here were the other four:

Matt Ryan - 31 years old, 10 years exp.
Tom Brady - 39 years old, 18 years exp.
Aaron Rodgers - 33 years old, 13 years exp.
Drew Brees - 38 years old, 17 years exp.

Sam Bradford at 99.3%, turning 30 this coming season, was the only other QB to post a rating higher than 97% this past season.
The unsaid thing about that list is that those guys have been in the same system for multiple years. Good coaching + QB talent + experience = Proficiency

Note how Schaub got better and better with each additional year under his belt.

I think 2012 was the year we went 12-4 and had 7 pro bowlers on offense (Matt Schaub, Arian Foster, Andre Johnson, Owen Daniels ) including 3 offensive lineman (Duane Brown, Wade Smith and Chris Myers)!

We should have nailed down home field advantage throughout the playoffs that year. We had the best record in the NFL at 11-1 through 12 games. But we had to suck down the stretch and finished 1-3 in our final 4 games including a head-scratching, 23-6 loss at home against the Vikings. A team we were favored to easily beat at home by 10.5 points on the Vegas odds if I remember correctly.

I think we lost 42-28 in the divisional round at Foxborough. I believe we would have beaten the Patriots and reached the AFC Championship game, possibly even Super Bowl, if we had played at home in every playoff game that year.

As disappointing as that 2012 season ended, I'd gladly take another one of those years again! Heck, even this past year's team with Brock Osweiler sucking at quarterback still reached as far as that 2012 team did! A divisional round loss at Foxborough. LOL

Bill O'Brien has Strong Support from Inside the Houston Texans Locker Room

Bill O'Brien has strong support from the players inside the Houston Texans locker room.

Bill O’Brien and his future with the Houston Texans has been discussed at length outside of the organization. O’Brien inked a 5-year deal with the Texans when he signed on to be the head coach in 2014 and, with 2 years left on that deal, questions are swirling on whether he will remain with the team.

“I’ll be honest, I really don’t think about my contract. I really don’t. I think about preparing for the offseason.” said O’Brien in March at the Owner’s Meetings. “In the past, if you look at Mr. McNair’s track record with those kind of things, that’s what he does. He did the same thing with Coach (Gary) Kubiak – extended him going into the last year of his contract. I think he did it twice. So, I don’t think about it. I know that when Mr. McNair wants to sit down and talk about those things, I know we’ll sit down and talk about it. I’m focused on coaching this team and doing as good a job as I can of helping our staff coach and helping our players get better.”

Owner Bob McNair has been in wait-and-see mode concerning his head coach as the team met with the media on Monday at the opening of off-season workouts. The players came out early supporting their head coach.

DeAndre Hopkins had an interesting season in 2016 with a dip in his numbers compared to his 2014-2015 seasons. O’Brien backed Hopkins in the off-season and the Texans wide receiver took notice.

“It’s great when you have a coach like this that’s always on your side. A down season, you know, it’s a team sport. It’s not one player out there playing,“ Hopkins stated, his reciprocal support for O’Brien clear. “So, to have a coach like that on your side all the time, it spreads throughout the locker room.”

Offensive lineman David Quessenberry who is working his way back to the field after battling lymphoma the past three years discussed how important O’Brien was to him during the process.

“He has had my back through this whole thing. We’ve gotten close. He has his own struggles in his family and I have mine. He has had a lot of wisdom on the way to approach things when it’s your body and you’re going through your own fights,” Quessenberry said of O’Brien. “That’s something that I’ve always kind of cherished and been fortunate to have with him since he got here and before I got diagnosed. He’s just been great.”

Quarterback Tom Savage was drafted by O’Brien in 2014 and spent time with him during the draft process. Savage has been the one constant in the quarterback room and has not overlooked how much O’Brien has pushed him since he arrived.

“I love the guy. That’s what I look forward to, is going to practice every day. He’s going to be hard on me. That’s what you want as a quarterback.” Savage explained. “He’s the type of guy that is always talking shop with you and that’s the type of guy you want to go out there and you want to brawl for.”

Posting a 27-21 record the past three seasons with the Texans and achieving two AFC South division titles, those are not the ultimate goal for O’Brien and the Texans. The only coach to have a winning recored in three consecutive seasons in franchise history is not being overlooked by his players. The players inside the Texans locker room undoubtedly appreciate what O’Brien brings to the team.

It would be refreshing to get a quote from one of the guys saying something like 'Bill's a dumbass and treats his qb's like ****'. I'm going to venture a guess and say that's not going to happen though.

It might. If the Browns release Brock, it might put him in the mood to talk about O'Brien.

there would be nothing gained by a player going off on the guy who controls his playing time.

I mean, duuh.
LoL

If he ever did something that stupid, his opportunities for backup QB let alone starter would be less likely than it is now. Remember, he was the one that at the very beginning told the media that essentially he was not going to have anyone (referring to O' Brien and his coaches) try to mold him into anything (like Brady) except what he was.............I guess, his unsophisticated football acumen self........his old stupid self.......

It's Florio so heed caution; believes Mahomes will be there at 25 and BOB hates it here:

Profootballtalk's, Mike Florio, joined Matt and Brian T. Smith and talked about the QBs the Texans might draft tonight, and how many he expects to go in round one. Mike also discussed who the Browns will take with their top two picks, and which round he expects Oklahoma RB, Joe Mixon, to be drafted. Finally, Mike said he is hearing that Bill O'Brien hates coaching in Houston.

Hates coaching for the least demanding owner in the NFL? Before, it was said that O'Brien hated coaching at Penn State. Where is the perfect spot for Billy?

Just threw it out there like that?

I don't see any difference between O'b hating coaching here & Mallett & Osweiler not liking being here.
Q:Rick Smith & Bill O'Brien - what feel do you get for where things stand with O'Brien?

A: There were some comments from Bob McNair that didn't get national attention they should have. I viewed them as ominous. It became inescapable. I was hearing from people throughout the league over & over again Bill O'Brien hates it in Houston. I have people I know that I trust saying he hates it there. Never heard it from Bill, Rick or anyone in the organization but outsiders who know O'Brien or know of him, they're convinced it's not working, it's not a fit. He's doing a good job selling everything's fine. He's controlled any internal fire that may be brewing but it got to the point that too many people were saying it's a recipe for something. When McNair said what he said, it was the most tactful way possible of confirming there is some dysfunction & it all needs to get resolved after this season.

Lance Z said BOB is not involved in this draft to kind of back this up also

If the relationship between FO and HC is so toxic here, why would Vrabel want to stay?

I have to admit that it would be very intriguing. Losing the defensive staff is my biggest worry if there is a OBrien exit, and Vrabel as HC would probably leave it mostly intact. Not taking anything from Wade Phillips and what he was able to do here, but this is the best defensive scheme we've ever had. They should get a whole lot of credit for the outstanding development of Mercilus and Bouye.

Just for completeness, when Wade dumped the "man coverage - all the time" philosophy in Denver, his scheme really flourished as well.

We haven't had a defensive minded HC in over a decade, which I think is our team identity now anyway. However, Vrabel is pretty green and hasnt even had a season as a DC under his belt.

The Offense is 100% on O'Brien especially now that he has said he doesn't even need an Offensive Coordinator. He's absolutely that good. Highly skilled and highly effective AND considered a top quarterback guru. Just consider how effective our Red Zone Offense was last season.

I need to stop this!!......I just can't seem to get over it and move on. Someone's got an awfull big head and ego problem if they think this offense doesn't need some help and new direction.

If there is any toxicity between the FO it is between the FO & O'b. If teapot moves on, the relationship between FO & HC may not be so toxic.

Most likely Crennel would take over & the defensive staff will remain intact. Romeo seems to get along just fine with the FO.

RC is going to be 71 by the start of the 2018 season. Not going to happen. There's only a handful of coaches over 60 in the league. Don't think any are older than 65.

I think there could be a bit of subterfuge going on between the Texans and media in general.

The Texans pretty much shut out John McClain as someone with insider knowledge (and they seem to be supplying him with a steady supply of incorrect info the past few years), so I would not find it shocking at all if they are releasing disinformation for whatever reason(s) to the media in general.

They are "CIA private" on Kirby, so I find anyone claiming too much insight to be dubious, at best. Seems like a bunch of assumptions most of the time, tbh.

Dick Lebeau - Titans (80 in Sept.)
Tom Pratt - Cardinals (77)
Tommy Brasher - Chiefs (76)

and Monte Kiffin is 77 and just left Jacksonville to coach for his son at Florida Atlantic.

Don't know, and not going to look any more, but I'm guessing there's a few more over 65 (Pete Carroll turns 66 in Sept.).

Can we trade OB and his two useless QB's to SF for Baby Shanny ?!
I wouldn't want any part of baby Shanny after that horrible "choke job" in the past Super Bowl (foolishly calling for pass plays late in the game) when he could have ran the ball and set up a manageable field goal for an 11-point lead. That likely wins the Lombardi Trophy as the Falcons offensive coordinator. I don't think the Patriots would have had enough time to come back from two scores down like they did 8 points down.

He admitted himself that he blew it. That same night when baby Shanny walked back through the hotel lobby here in Houston, he was screaming at people that he blew the playcalling and cost his team the Super Bowl.

I wish baby Shanny well as the 49ers head coach but man oh man, he may never live that one down. He's moved on to a bigger role but he doesn't even have a good quarterback to work with. All those three stiffs the 49ers have don't even measure up to the reigning NFL MVP, Matt Ryan.

I was actually surprised the 49ers didn't just select Deshaun Watson with the second overall pick. Oh well, I'm glad things worked out the way they did.

A telling response by Patrick Starr to a Mail Bag question directed to him.

Darth Hater @Giantstepps

@SOTTexans Do you think there's any flexibility to this offensive system being tweaked to suit Watson's strength?
8:33 PM - 8 Jun 2017

The most important thing right now is to realize it is Tom Savage’s show until further notice. However, if Deshaun Watson did end up on the field, or Brandon Weeden for that matter, Bill O’Brien will try and take advantage of each of their skill sets. That is what good coaches do and something that George Godsey could not capitalize on the past few seasons as offensive coordinator. O’Brien has a better idea on how to make the offense work based on personnel.

Interesting the offense sucked just as bad under O'Brien as it did under Godsey.

I don't see the creativity others do. It's a vanilla play call selection compounded by the most hard headed running philosophy imaginable.

Team might do better with a different offensive/QB guru because it can't do much worse.

So O'Brien is basically trashing his buddy Godsey.

Even though O'Brien is the architect of the offense and the QB guru.

Really?

Because when OB took over playcalling last season I couldn't tell a difference.

Godsey was scapegoated.

This is the guy OB brought in as a qb coach and slowly started to give more responsibility to until he promoted him to OC. OB must have approved of something he was doing.

If there is a change in the offense this year it will be because of better qb play and maybe OB being better at his job than last year.

So you're saying O'Brien dictated this text to Starr so he (Starr) could pile on?
Srsly?

I don't know about "dictated" but I can't remember Starr writing a narrative that made OB look bad. It's always someone else's fault.

Hmmm...
well, did the article say it was Rick Smith's fault?
If so, there are some suspects around here who might be operating under an alias.....
:D

Not sure why people are still arguing about OB and offense and QB's right now.

We drafted a young prospect who likely will struggle some.

Our offense likely to be one of the worst again. OB hasn't shown that he's an over achiever on the offensive side of the ball, and I don't expect to see that happen with Savage or some rookie either. I think we'll have a similar team as last season.

I surely hope not. This is a do or die scenario for O'Brien and his offense. If we repeat that nonsense from last season, we can say bye bye to Bill O'Brien.

I don't know, Osweiler was so underwhelming under center last year that even marginally better play from Savage, if all other things hold even, should equate to at least 1 or 2 more regular season wins. I don't expect the offense to become world-beaters, but I do expect slightly better play just because of the change at QB.

1 or 2 more regular season wins plus 1 more step in the post season and OB is likely here for life

As I remember O'Brien stating, I coach what I am given or something along those terms. A statement such as this might be alluding to the fact that he's not given a whole lot of input on putting this team together and RS wants this title.

One glaring problem for me has been the OL since it has been a let-down for the past 3 seasons. Knowing that this OL had a big need to fill on the right side...how could RS completely ignore this situation throughout the off-season and draft? With the offensive skill positions set for a potentially big season why didn't RS set his sights on a veteran FA?

Obie: Hey Rick, I'd sure like the team to address the right side of this OL...

RS: Hey!....Hey, you'd shut your mouth if you knew what was good for you!

Obie: Ok...ok, damn...I'll just coach the players you get me....

They all were banking on Newton to take the next step forward. Unfortunately he destroyed both of his knees at the same freaking time. Talk about bad luck. Now its up to Lamm and a few others to man that position. Hopefully we see some growth and solid play.
