How about Tony Romo in Houston

Seems obvious Jones doesn't want Romo in Houston. Can't stand thought of Romo in Texans uniform, in Dallas news all the time, etc etc. Changed his mind on release only after the Texans got rid of Brock. Probably hopes he can get Romo to Denver or CBS. Is a control freak & wants what he wants.

you don't think Romo is concerned about being told he would be cut then placed on hold?

The only hold he's on is by Dallas .... Once he gets cut one (several) of these QB needy teams will offer him a fat contract almost instantly.

I think we're all missing a very important point in all this. Had Rick Smith waited just one day, Romo would have already been released.

Because JJ didn't have any idea that the Texans would pursue Romo until they made the trade with Cleveland?

It's all speculation on our part, but a more plausible version of the timeline is simply Jones trying to screw the Texans, not being surprised by them.

also, I keep not seeing a reason why he would have needed to release Romo

the whole idea is based on some sentimental concept of JJ caring about Romo

I totally expect the Cowboys to hold onto Romo untill the last second they can do that for free

The question is, will Romo stay quiet when training camp starts? in which case the cowboys can hold onto him basically untill june

if Romo is tired of waiting he just needs to go take part of training camp activities and the cowboys will probably release him to avoid risking an injury

but the best approach for JJ is definitely hang on to Romo the most time possible so that the hypotetical new team is forced to trade for Romo if they want to get him working with the team ASAP

Except it was common knowledge the Cowboys were going to release Romo the next day.

The Cowboys are strapped for cap space. They need to dump Romo's $14M 2017 cap hit. Can't do that if he gets hurt in Training camp... or doing anything in preparation for the season.

If he were to get hurt tomorrow throwing the football, or jogging around the block, the Cowboys are on the hook for the $14M whether Tony plays or not.

Except it was common knowledge the Cowboys were going to release Romo the next day.

And it was common knowledge before the Oz trade that the Texans were going to make a run at Romo.

IMHO, I am not convinced that Jones was actually going to cut Romo. That was his little ploy to get teams to show their hands.

Are you sure non-work related injuries in the off-season still force the team to pay the player?

if so, then JJ must consider this worth the risk.

if not, then there's no reason to worry about any of that untill training camp

If it's football related, the team cannot cut him while he's injured.

So you think JJ thinks Houston is 1 player away?

Wait ... and the one player is the one who could never lift the Cowboys that last step. He's cock-blocking (and not starting) his Lombardi boy?

Dude is waiting because someone will break.

Independent of jj wanting to wait until some one breaks for a trade, I don't believe for a minute that Romo coming here will make us 1 player away from going to the SB. Nor do I believe jj believes it or it worried about that scenario.......just that he does not want Romo publicity taking away from the Cowboys.

One notable difference between the NFI and PUP lists is that the team has the right to not pay base salary to a player on the NFI list. The idea is that if a player suffered his injury outside the purview of the team, they should not be responsible for his salary. However, teams will often work out deals with NFI players to pay some or all of their salary when there is a common understanding about the injury. This is particularly true with players who the team knows will go on the NFI list upon arrival to the team.

Let's bring Tony Romo in for a visit this week then.
If all checks out, including his physical, a trade is fine.
Thank you Jerry Jones for finally moving this along!

So untill training camp comes if romo injures himself it's on him, unless I am misunderstanding.

Now that the cowboys have given permission to other team to workout tony I would be curious to see what would happen if he gets injured during said workouts.

Would the Cowboys be held responsible?

But nobody wants to assume the pricey terms of this existing contract when they know they can deal directly with free agent Romo very soon so how does this change anything ?

A team could trade for Romo on the condition he re-works his deal, something they could negotiate right now, prior to trading for him

If Tony Romo is released and goes on the open market then the Denver Broncos are very much in the running. That's the most logical point in all of this.

If the Houston Texans trade for him not only can we take on his current contract ($14 million base salary in 2017), but the Broncos miss out and the Cowboys are on the hook for Tony Romo's future prorated signing bonus money for the remainder of his three-year deal. That's almost an extra $20 million spread out over the next three years that the Cowboys owe (not the Texans).

Also the Texans would take no significant "dead money salary cap hit" if they decide to release Tony Romo before his final season in 2019. And if Tony Romo plays well then he'll be worth the base salaries of $14 million in 2017, $19.5 million in 2018 and $20.5 million in 2019 (his final year).

And obviously once the Texans have Tony Romo under contract they can easily re-work his current contract. But for a $14 million base salary in 2017 and nothing more, it's well worth the risk for a chance at a Super Bowl ring.

Trading for Tony Romo is actually the better option for the Texans.

The only teams that may be interested in doing this would probably be teams other than the Texans and Broncos that see a need for Romo, and have the cap space, but they are not on his list of teams to be traded to. Jacksonville is a team that comes to mind. I think this is Jerrah's way of trying to force the hand of the Texans or Broncos to "come to the table," so to speak, when they see others interest in Romo. I hope the Texans don't bite!

Jerry Jones does not and did not before today have an unlisted phone #. Folks still gonna wait till Romo is a FA and Romo is still gonna wait to talk to serious contenders.

Exactly and obviously this ^. Please let's just forget Romo, forget the silly dream of him "leading us to SB," and get one of the other available QBs (Cap's my choice, but could live with Cutler), and draft a QB at 1:25.

Osweiler got $18M last year. Fitzpatrick got $12M. Glennon jus got $14M.

$14M for Romo, plus you have him locked up for two more years if you want him ($19M same we were going to pay Osweiler).... I don't think you can get a better deal than that.

The only question is what are you willing to give up in trade. If there are absolutely no takers, he could possibly be yours for a conditional 6th of next year's draft.

That's if you want him. I'd rather draft our QB of the future, but if I wanted him, I'd absolutely trade for him... at least find out what the Cowboys are asking before I say no.

The Cowboys are on the hook for that no matter what (trade or cut). Under no circumstances would the Texans be paying him or counting his Cowboy related prorated bonuses against their (Texans) cap.

I know that but I'm just pointing out the contract Romo has, as is, isn't as bad as people make it out to be. It's a $14 million base salary in 2017. If we win the Super Bowl this season it's very well worth it. We'd have paid Brock Osweiler more than that to stink it up and likely become an inconsistent backup in 2017 if we had kept him. Or should I say if the Browns hadn't bailed us out.

The big difference is the Denver Broncos become a major player if he's released. I wouldn't put it past John Elway to sign Romo if he's on the open market. That is why I had always preferred trading for him. We have a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, two 4ths in this draft. I expect the Texans to also draft a quarterback in the early rounds to groom for the future. We have Savage and Weeden both signed to one year contracts, essentially, as 2017 is a contract year for both of them.

You dont contact Romo
You dont bring him in
You dont give him a physical.

You stand your ground and dont show one instance of interest. The moment you do Jerruh has got you. NO chance in hell that Romo's agent doesnt know the Texans are interested, none.

Might sound crazy but I'm willing to go with Savage, Weeden and Rookie. Drew Brees' contract is up next year, we can do this all over again next year.

It makes sense to wait on both sides. Look at what Philly got for Bradford. It also makes sense for Houston to give up a 4th that could become a 3rd based on snaps. When the workouts start and Tony shows up, something is gonna give

http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/...b-tony-romo-leaving-football-broadcast-career

Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is leaving football and going into broadcasting, even with Dallas planning to release him Tuesday, league sources tell ESPN.

Romo has received interest from CBS, Fox and NBC, and can choose to be a color commentator where he wants. That move could come as early as Tuesday, sources said....

....Dallas is expected to designate Romo a post-June 1 release, softening the blow against the Cowboys' cap this season. Instead of counting $24.7 million in 2017, Romo would count $10.7 million this year and $8.9 million in 2018. The Cowboys would gain $14 million in cap space, but it would not become available until June 2. But after Tuesday, Romo will no longer be with the Cowboys.....

....Romo already has informed Cowboys owner Jerry Jones of his decision to step away from the game for now, sources said. The networks courting him also are aware.

That's funny then, Jerruh is like "surrrre.... anyone can now talk with him" knowing Romo was heading to the booth. Maybe last ditch effort to get a pick from someone. Time to move thread to NFL section. :shades:

We've said Savage is the starter; no big deal. Draft OL, QB, and see who gets cut. Adjust and overcome. Last year we got our #1 QB target and it was a monumental failure.

At least his retirement almost guarantees the Texans won't be in New England for the 2017 NFL kickoff game! Romo at QB, that's a Networks wet dream. Savage, meh, he'll get us a noon kickoff against Cleveland maybe...

BREAKING: Sources: #TonyRomo to land with CBS next season and replace Simms as top analyst http://sbjsbd.biz/kivoMf

10:01 AM - 4 Apr 2017

Tony Romo will be a TV analyst with CBS next season, according to sources. A deal has yet to be signed, but CBS and Romo have reached a verbal agreement. The Cowboys QB is expected to replace Phil Simms as the net’s top game analyst, where he will be paired with Jim Nantz. CBS outbid Fox Sports for Romo’s services, sources said. Fox Sports wanted Romo to replace John Lynch as the game analyst on the net’s No. 2 broadcast team. Just a couple of weeks ago, Fox was considered the front-runner to land Romo, since it carries the NFC package that Romo knows so well. But a concern for Romo was that another former Cowboys QB, Troy Aikman, is the net’s top NFL game analyst, and he is not likely to leave the booth any time soon.

ESPN first reported that Romo will retire and move to the broadcast booth following his expected release from the Cowboys today. There still is a chance that another NFL team may try to sign Romo, but ESPN is reporting that the 36-year-old Romo will retire, citing health reasons. Romo is being repped by CAA Sports in this deal.

An unresolved question is what will happen on Thursday nights. A source says that Romo, a broadcasting neophyte, does not want to call both "TNF" and CBS’ national Sunday game right off the bat. The NFL in the past has made it clear, though, that CBS and NBC, its "TNF" broadcasters, have to use their top broadcast team for the series. Last season, the NFL balked at NBC’s plan to have Mike Tirico replace Al Michaels on Thursday nights.

I don't want to believe it.
I'm torn about this

if they actually wanted Romo, they went through all the trouble to free up cap space to get Romo only for him to retire, and the texans look like doufus.

on the other hand,

if they didn't want Romo, it means they actually thought that trading 16M for a second draft pick was worth it, which honestly feels a bit meh, even worse if we don't spend those money in something useful (or at least more useful than a 2nd rounder would be)
