O'Brien may or may not want out - I dont' know (unlike some of you, I don't believe or not believe things based on whether I want them to be true), but if indeed he does want out, I hope the conversation with McNair goes something like this:
Bill O'Brien: Mr. McNair, I'd like to move on to something other than Head Coach of the Texans
Bob McNair: Well Bill, I can't force you to coach this team next season, although I'd like to see you back.
OB: Well, I'm just not happy with a number of the moves Rick Smith is forcing on me.
BM: Ya know Bill, you've just finished 3 above .500 seasons in a row, back to back division championships, your first (and our third) playoff win, and if we can figure out the QB situation, there's no telling what we might do over the next few years. Given all that, I don't give a rats ass whether you can't stand to be in the same room as Rick, or whether you want to make him your son's godfather.
OB: But to go back to what you said earlier, you're not going to force me to coach?
BM: It's America in 2017 Bill, I couldn't do that if I wanted to!
OB: Okay, so can I get a recommendation from you for one of the other owners?
BM: Oh hell no, I said I couldn't force you to coach here, I didn't say I'd let you coach another NFL team. You're free to step away, but if you choose to do that, we're not paying you, and you're not coaching another NFL team while your contract is unexpired.
OB: Okay then, see you tomorrow!
Doesn't really sound like McNair, but as stupid as this sounds, I wouldn't be surprised to see McNair do something surprising.
