The NFL is officially back

Only game I can see is Saints at Patriots on NFLN. Gotta say this is the first time I've been impressed with JimmyG. He started out rough, had a couple of lax moments, tooks some big hits... but overall, he knows his offense & how to operate it. I like how he goes through his progression on his drop, makes a decision by the time he hits his last step, then come forward, stepping into his throw.

He made some good throws, never looked flustered...

Doesnt mean he's the next Brady, but hes come a long way fro Eastern Illinois.

NFLN is replaying all the preseason openers today. Falcons/Redskins are wrapping up right now. Saints/Pats next followed by Jags/Jets at 9:00 am CDT then Panthers/Ravens and Buccs/Eagles.

What do you guys think about going for two in the preseason?

Personally i want my first team to go for two every time. It's amnother red zone opportunity as far as I'm concerned. Can't get enough of those. There should be plenty of field goal opportunities for the kicker later in the game. Hopefully a couple of extra points as well.

But i want my 1st team working as much as possible in the red zone.

hell, why not? As you say, get as much red zone practice as can be had.
And mix up the plays please so the opposition doesn't glean some sort of pattern

I agree, I want the 1s going for 2 every single time in the PS as the score doesn't really matter and it's basically like you said, extra goal line practice. The 1st unit won't be on the field all that much in PS anyway so yeah, every opportunity you get, go for 2.

Teams don't go for two every single time in preseason, because whatever works they'll be tipping their hand and putting too much on tape for other coaches to look at. It could come back to bite them later on in the season. That's why they do goal line drills in practice.

Yeah, but practice against teammates on a practice field is nothing like game speed against a different color jersey. That situation is a great opportunity to run your goal line offense because there's probably not that many chances in a game, especially when the 1s don't play that much. And I'm not even that concerned about the PAT, just get the goal line reps in.

And if you're worried about what you put on film, well, all the more reason to get reps, IMO.

& if the offense doesn't evolve over the course of the season, if we fail to adjust as the season progresses... we've got the wrong man coaching our team.

With that kind of thinking, we shouldn't play our first team at all in the preseason.

I honestly didn't know the Rams were originally the LA Rams.
The Rams actually originated in Cleveland and moved to L.A. in the 40s.

Have you not heard of the Fearsome Foursome? Deacon Jones, Merlon Olsen, Lamar Lundy, and Rosey Grier?

Two of the four are in the HoF.
And if they had kept sack stats back then, Deacon Jones would probably have the record, not Strahan.
maaaaannn... that was REAL football

Serious? As ObsiWan said, they started in Cleveland, but to not know they were in LA before....

You're in your early 20's?

Well, I only started really watching football in the 90s, so yeah... maybe some of that. I honestly thought they started in St. Louis & moved to LA, then back. Never cared enough to verify.

Anyway, gotta say I've been impressed so far by this year's rookie QBs. They all looked fairly decent so far. I haven't seen Cook yet, but his numbers look fine.

Dak Prescott has been the most impressive so far, really in command of that offense.

even so, Goff looked like Hoyer against the Cowboy 2's and 3's
Prescott went against the Rams' 1's.
So there's that.

He wasn't that bad. He had a couple of issues, I would have thought he was farther along. But the way they wouldn't let him run a 2 minute offense makes me think that coaching staff is being overly cautious with his development. Heck, it's the Rams, they've ruined about as many QBs as the Browns.

Hasn't he been getting all the work with the 1's since OTA's? Not to take anything away from him but he's been getting more than most rooks

Still.. most people said he was going to be a project. Looks like he understands where each play is going to stress a defense. He's making good reads, good decisions & he's got a nice, fast release.

Impressive if you ask me.

I thought he would be good. I was impressed with what I saw of him last year and wanted the Texans to take him in round 2 before the signed Os

Thing is we most likely won't see a lot of either of them in P/S game 3. That's when "conventional wisdom" sez you play your starters for most of the game. And Romo is still the Cowboys' starter until he gets hurt again. And it looks like Case Keenum's starters job is safe for the time being.
Now and the next game is when you get a good look at the 2's.
P/S game four is mainly for all the bubble guys.

Dak will play the second half of game 3.

Case looked ok. But if I were Fisher, Mannion will start getting reps with the first team. Goff is going to the scout team.

Not true.. teams keep things very vanilla during preseason for the same concerns I mentioned.. how many different plays do you have in the playbook just for goal line situations? If you just want to keep handing it off in same packages/formations down there however.. have at it

We have one of the best defenses in the entire leugue.. our offense can have plenty of opportunities trying to improve their goal line efficency facing that level of competition in practice without having to "go for it every time" and supplying more tape for teams league wide.

We also have a big kicking competition going on which is pretty damn important, I want to see them kick as much as possible. Our kickers could make or break us... honestly if we got down near the goal line. I'd rather just trot them out there in a live game situation which unlike goal line, you can't simulate in practice?

Plus 3 of our 5 projected starting offensive lineman aren't even going to play, what good will it do for us to run a practice drill during a live game without the majority of our starting offensive lineman not even on the field?.. especially since we're going to play against the team we just held a joint practice against in camp?

Like I said there will be plenty opportunities to kick field goals when the 1st team is done for the night.

& like you said, 3 of 5 of our starting OL won't play tonight. There's wishful thinking & there's preparing for the worse.

Bryan Hoyer's first throw against the Patriots is picked off.

And he's rocking a 34.4 QB rating. That's about double what he had in the KC game. Dude's on fire.

On another note, there's another former Texan QB who is 18-27, 66.7%, 257 yards, 9.5 Y/A, 0 TD, 0 INT, and a 97.3 QBr after 2 PS games.

Bolded is key

Played a heck of a game today. His legend surely grew. He plays like he has something to prove. Probably didn't like being called a project throughout the draft process.

"Yes, young Prescott, we will watch your career with great interest."

If I only knew how to photoshop Jerrah's face where Palpatine's is

The Jets are so confused after acquiring 3 QBs besides a 2nd round QB pick. None of those 3 QBs have looked good enough to want to get their bubblegum cards, while the backup position looks like any choice will probably the wrong one. Meanwhile, while the Jets HC is trying to decide between vomit and feces, Hackenberg has gotten no reps in either of the 1st two preseason games.........with it looking like his fate for the 3rd game is the same.

The Colts OL looks about as good as people suspect ours might. At least 2 sacks on Luck so far in the 1st qt vs PHL.

Derek Carr and Amari Cooper....the raiders will be a problem this year.

David's Failures are why Derek succeeds. That kid's arm is so live...just effortlessly flings it out there and he's dropped some dimes to Crabtree and Cooper.

I love how Teddy Bridgewater has developed. Exactly what I thought he could be. What could have been.

I notice he's still patting the ball.

Yeah he does. Not sure how much that negatively affects him, not positive DB's are picking up a rhythm to the throw even though I get where you are coming from. Still, his command of the huddle, his poise under pressure, smart decisions. I could deal with a nervous pat of the ball if he was on my team.

I assume you never watched the Oilers either?

I'm glad the Rams moved back. I could never get used to the St Louis Rams. It sounded almost as stupid as the Tennessee Oilers.

I think when teams relocate they should always change the name and take on a new identity with their new city ala the Ravens, Titans, etc.
