Gameday Thread - 8/14 - Texans VS 49'ers Preaseason Game 1

The offense looked like all it needs is a couple of good OLinemen, as long as Savage is the QB. The defense is more problematic. They must play their positions, which they can learn, and make their tackles, which is not so easy to learn.

As I expected, the operation of the offense was the focus

There definitely wasn't any game planning. Nothing across the middle. Not a lot of "throw it to Hopkins" didn't see any "edge type players"

So I kinda believe them

I know it's a preseason game and all but, I feel so good whenever our Texans comes up with W. I know it doesn't count nor mean anything other than a preseason game but, you know.

Go Texans!!!

Will Fuller was not open on that play. I know the replay makes it look like he is, but if you go back & watch the play, Fuller is being bracketed. There is a safety right over the top & if Brock throws that ball, it's sure to be picked off.

You're not alone. Watching these other games this week, fans all over the place are extremely happy their team won. Watch the end of the Seahawks game, those players were extremely happy they got the W.

I guess the main thing is don't get to high when we win & don't get too low when we lose.

Jaelen Strong is who we were hoping he was...
Braxton Miller is better than we thought he was...
Josh Lenz was a huge surprise...
Kenny Hilliard is better than we expected him to be.
Lamar Miller is who we thought he would be and that is a good thing and he did not even get into the passing game...
Stephen Anderson is who we were hoping he would be...
Akeem Hunt surpassed Tyler Ervin in my book, as that RB...

Brock was a disappointment...
Tyler Ervin was a disappointment...

Will Fuller did not have a chance to show what he is...

Brock will have a lot of options to choose from, I hope he will be a good starting QB...
We know Savage is at the least a very good backup QB...

I am both disappointed and yet happy, we won but not how I expected to win...

I may have been a little harsh on Covington & Wilfork in my earlier assessment. The Texans were pitching 3 & outs, forcing turnovers, & scoring on defense when those two were in the game. Wilfork sat down shortly after that fumble return, & while we still forced a 3 & out, Jjo committed our first penalty giving the 49er's a new set of downs.

Covington played another series. Thad Lewis came in. Couldn't hit a receiver, but he ran for a couple of 1st downs.

Still, we only allowed 13 points.

I don't think the middle of our OL played badly. Looked like some communication issues that left guys unblocked... maybe Brocks' fault. But definitely something that can & should be fixed.

I hear you TK. I have been a fan of Houston's NFL team for so long that I lean to live with it. I usually don't get myself too hyped up but, I am happy when we get W no matter it is a preseason or regular season game.

Go Texans!!!

Being 6 hours ahead of Houston, this is comedic gold to not have watched the game and just read the game thread. Some of you guys are in mid-season form already.

Hell yeah...us fans don't need no preseason to get ready for the regular season !

One major concern which cannot be explained away by game planning or not..................1st half: 16 missed tackles by 10 of our D players............

Worst performance of the night, Spencer Tillman. It was like I was watching a different game than him.

I generally watch a lot of the pre season with the sound muted. Listening to Tillman saying the same bullshit over and over and OVER again is maddening.

I'm consistently wanting the best player at every position starting. I'm not anointing anyone after one preseason game, but I will be after PS game #4.

Well... O'b & Rick (McNair) has already annointed Osweiler. As been said the last three weeks, expect Savage to look better. But make no mistake, they're going to give Osweiler time to "catch up"

He was signed because of his performance in real games. That hasn't changed. When the chips were down, he was a difference maker. He was a play maker. He was a big part of his team winning. Sure, the defense was a bigger part. The running game was a big part. But Brock was a big part as well.

We're supposed to have a defense. We hope we have a run game... Savage can't even make it to the regular season healthy.

Having to endure another one of his "sayings" (purportedly the bastard-child of some other athlete/coach) is worse than nails on a chalkboard.

I don't know what you're you talking about? He wasNT a " Difference Maker when the chips were down". He had very little to do with their winning.

All through camp you never heard how he was developing and really clicking with the WR's. All you kept hearing was the same old rhetoric about how he was a good leader. That is why I'm worried about him. Things don't seem to be clicking. I know it's soon but when you have a new QB people usually can't contain their praise of every good play. Where is the praise? I'm not seeing it. In fact it seems like from everything I've read they're covering up a lot of his miscues. You watch the practices and he throws am int and in the paper all you see is this DB made a good play and intercepted or batted the ball down. Never mentions who threw the ball.

People can argue that he hasn't had the time all they want and it's a legit POV but for the time he's had he hasn't shown much of anything on the field.

don't think he's a panocha

Just catching up with the Gameday thread and saw this! A panocha! I spit my coffee on the computer. Epic!

The CBA, whenever it gets looked at again, needs to implement ONE or TWO days a week to just tackling! It was near non existent in the first quarter! 300 yds+ of offense to Gabbert and the Niners??! No bueno!

I think the lack of depth along the offensive and defensive lines is evident. I'm including OLB. Our defensive line was getting smashed all night long. They were easily persuaded wherever the SF oline wanted them to go. The OLBs bit on that stupid option play every dang time.

I think Allen was the only olineman that might've had a decent showing (I never mentioned his name while watching with my son). The rest, pfffft! I think Lamm is the name I mentioned most. Bad feet, bad hands...just bad. Would've been a couple few more sacks had the QB not helped out by getting rid of the ball quickly

And tackling, good grief. We should run the Oklahoma drill after warmups every practice just to prove a point.

I have no doubt Os will be starting. I was stating my opinion on the subject not what I was expecting to see happen. I agree that there is no competition this year, beyond #2 and #3.

Yay! We won......pretty much my only feedback on the game lol. I honestly checked out and went back to No Man's Sky after 1st Q. Will have to read up on analysis of everything else.

We'll just have to agree to disagree.

Ok... I see your point.

Yeah... I can see that.

I agree. I was very disappointed. & you've given me quite a bit to think about.

Still, my point is he's been anointed. They're going to try to make it work. If it don't, Savage & Weeden don't sound like too bad of a plan B right now. Hmm... Weeden said when we signed Osweiler, he jumped at the chance to sign here as well. Maybe that means exactly what it looks like it means.

Well that was encouraging...not.

Brock gets a D+ from me. That is the most important piece of the puzzle this year and he looked bad. Tentative, slow decision making, off target, looking to his dump off early and often, never once tested his new weapons, held the ball too long, etc. Perhaps the basics such as lining guys up, setting protections correctly, getting the play call in, changing plays etc went well, and that counts for something in this kind of situation, but once the ball was snapped, he wasn't good. I'm looking for big improvement in game 2 and 3 or I'll be as nervous Mike Tyson at a spelling bee.

Savage gets a B- from me. He looked pretty darn good in the second half playing against guys that will be insurance salesman but he wasn't that good in the first half. He did make some nice throws and at least went to the intermediate well a handful of times. He also tended to hold the ball too long at times too. Decent outing but I'm not ready to coronate him to anything. He looks like a good NFL backup to me and might have some starting potential, but he's not Steve Young sitting behind Joe Montana.

Defense was a C-. They get two TO's which was good, but tackling. Wow. Just awful.

My standouts were Lamar Miller, Hillard, Braxton Miller, Josh Lenz, and Stehpen Anderson.

It was the first pre season game. Slack should be given for that reason alone. Next week not so much, third pre season game the 1st string better have their act together.

Anyone notice how we pretty much stayed away from the middle of the field? Whether run or pass. We stretched to either side in the run game & just about every pass was outside the hash marks.

What's up with that?

I don't understand why some fans don't get that. Mr. Les, Rick and Coach has already signed off on Brock being the starting QB for the next two years and hopefully the foreseeable future. The system that is in place is highly complicated, therefore there will be a lot of hiccups.

The Savage supporters might have to wait until he's on another team to see him start. Now if Brock sustain a major injury or gets an concussion, their dreams will come true.

This.

I am seeing so much overreaction this morning it ridiculous. NOt just here either

Savage, with more playing time, thus more of a chance to get a rhythm going, and eventually against lesser talent after his first 3 series, looked better on the stat sheet and eventually on the eye test. But in his first 3 series, the same amount Osweiler had, he wasn't all that good.

Os played 3 series, his first 3 ever in this system, and that was it. No chance to continue and try to get into a rhythm. Savage, whose had more time in the system, was worse statistically in his first 3 series.

Brock certainly has a long way to go, a lot to prove, but let's not act like we have a QB controversy after 1 PS game. How did Russell Wilson look Saturday?

I want to see Josh Lenz with the ones.

He's probably been seeing a lot of practice time with the 2nd QBs. I'm not surprised Savage looked the better of the two. But, that's not an excuse for a QB who is supposed to be the next wonder of the world. I'm sure we'll all be watching and judging.

Does anyone have any experience with NFL Gamepass while overseas? I'm in Vienna right now and I signed up for the free trial, but right now it has me concerned because I cannot click the Texans' game to watch it. Maybe I can only select it when it's game time, yeah?

yeah :)

Is this where I can blast my crappy opinions about a preseason game? Ok? ok. Os was obviously not good but it was all of 3 series, I can't fathom the people saying that Savage is currently/will be the best QB on the roster. It's a possibility, but anybody who thinks that is what they saw out of the first game is wanting Savage to be a starter anyway. I liked both of the Millers (Braxton, Lamarr), I thought Strong had an okay game, and I am happy that Will Fuller didn't look completely lost.

What bugged me was how easily the 9'ers offense went through the Texans defense in the first half. They didn't come away with tons of points, but the front 7 looked like it did the first five or six games of last season which was not good. Tackling is a huge issue. I feel like this team is going to need to rely on it's defense to win games this year, and this is an auspicious start to say the least.

I'm in London, and that is pretty much NFL GP for me as well. No pre-game. No 5 minutes before the kickoff. It turns on pretty much at kickoff. A few times the kick was in the air before it turned on this last season.
