Brock Osweiler agrees to 4 year 72 million

Bob McNair says team was consulted about FAs to be signed and were happy. "Ric Smith excellent job as he stuck with plan". Smith in turn thanks McNair for the resources to get players that he and OBrien wanted. Also thanks Cris Olsen (salary cap guru). OBrien supports everything Smith said and the "four guys met needs. Scouts had done good job and addresses the four "no one had anything negative to say about any of you.

1st question OBrien answered he and Smith are in different rooms doing their thing and then meet in one room to compare.
 
Try to evaluate draft outside of team needs. OBrien. Smith then says we will take the BPA at each spot they draft. You will like the way Allen plays. Want another play maker in draft and then add to Dline.

Coach: we watched Os for some time and he was very impressive and we think we got right guy here.

McClain ask Bob McNair when he first heard that OS was in play. "Rick Smith told me he would get a QB. Not known from where because OS not known to be available." "We stuck in there when Denver {made offer} and they knew we were not backing out."

GM: we sat down and discussed team needs and agreed if OS was avail he was the guy.
 
GM: it is known in this league that you need two QBs and Hoyer is here. Really likes Miller.
Coach: very impressed with Miller on and off field.
GM: we fix the (money) amounts and Cris Olsen and players agents go from there.

In Miami, I could leave stadium and be home. Two hour flight now but has followed Houston for awhile and with my skill sets I can help Texans. I want to be a featured back and I can get that here.
 
Got real messy in Denver apparently. Elway and his ego. Brock and his feelings over being benched had some merit. Money was too close, something was amiss.

Fingers crossed. Skipping over cracks in the sidewalk. Rabbits feet. I really hope it pans out. Catiously optimistic. Don't like his qbr and turnovers. Dude was sacked 23 times. How many were his fault? 3 to 2 td/int ratio isn't much to write home about. O'Brien needs to go to work. No more excuses. He has HIS guys now.

Hey, look on the bright side at least Hoyer is out of there. Right? Lol.

Dude presents himself very well.

Seems very appreciative and respectful.

Plans to work harder than anyone (JJ might have something to say about that)

Came to Houston because he thinks it gives him the best chance for success. Offense fits his skill set.

Thanks Denver management and Kubiak for getting him in NFL and thanks Kubiak for working with him to be where he is today and goes on to thank all other coaches. Now for the future: I m honored and appreciative. I talked to coaches and and wish could start. No one will outwork me. I promise. I will be great teammate but want people to say I am a hard worker. Wants fans to know he will do everything possible. Very difficult for him to leave Denver but Texans offer him best opportunity to go forward. Offense matches is skills and he is looking forward to getting into it.
When asked about benching, "I am for the team. I support Kubiak decision he is the coach. what
Would need hours to say what Peyton taught him. Most important was how to be a pro."

Expectations of coaches: not really discussed (I doubt that). Looks forward to working with Nuk. already talked to DeAndre and both looking for place to work out together. Look at my smile."

He called Elway Yesterday that decision came down to decision and he was going with Texans.

"Are you prepared to handle comments about your contract being so high for minimal experience." Replied will not be thinking about contract on the field. Wants to improve on not taking sacks but throwing ball away. "game is won during the week not on game day."

I agree. He did come across very well as mentioned above. Only "boo boo" when asked when he had made decision,he replied tomorrow. He caught himself immediately and apologized correcting to "yesterday". Everyone laughed.
 
I was pissed after we traded two 2nd & extended a starters contract to Schaub after one impressive loss.

I feel much better about spending a few dollars, no draft picks on a guy who went 5-2 on a team very similar to ours.

I have absolutely no misconceptions about what we got. A QB prospect. That's it. Now it's time for O'b to go to work.

Well, he's more of a flannel shirt and pants guy that grows out his beard a little bit. I expect he'll be that way when the games start up. He's more like Brett Favre off the field. Hopefully on the field as well (becomes a reliable guy who never misses games and has a lot of winning success). Toughness and the ability to stay on the field is important at the quarterback position.

I can't say I watch a whole bunch of press conferences but did Schaub, Hoyer, Fitzmagic etc wear a suit and tie when they got introduced?
 
First impressions:

Lamar Miller: Speaks as if his head is filled with rocks. Loves the word "skillset."

Brock: Can't visually locate a reporter in a tight space. Has picked up Manning Mannerisms®.

I'm curious to know what short comings Brock had that dropped him to the 2ND round.

I can see he's got the size, the arm. I know he played in the spread. Didn't win a lot of games. Didn't play a lot of games.

I would imagine there were questions about how much he loves football, can he pick up an NFL offense, maybe some leadership questions.

From what I saw last season, I k ow he can pick up an NFL offense, no question. I also know he can play at a high level, a difference maker, add to winning & not just not lose. So that's a good thing.

I've heard a few things that lead me to believe he's a good leader, but we'll see.

& he'll have to earn that $74M. We gave him $12M, we'll give him $5M if he makes the roster. & we'll pay him $3M to play the position in 2015... basically $20M. I know there are gaurantees & what not, but don't know the details. But more or less, he'll have to earn everything else.

Can Brock play under center? Usually guys that tall are better in the shotgun/pistol. And I watched quite a bit of him last year and he was always in the pistol IIRC. I'm trying to formulate the looks and formations the Texans O will be giving us this year and how the playbook might change in general.

To me, physically...he looks like a cross between Big Ben and Mallet. He has the stature and arm of Mallet, but I thought he had the maneuverability and strength of Ben the times I saw him play. Granted, maybe not quite to Ben's degree, but he has that same skill set and physicality to shake off rushers and unlike Mallet he isn't a statue. He isn't a running QB by any means and I would definitely describe him as a pocket passer but he can move, shake, and dodge... and if necessary, scramble.

If he can add the intangibles on the mental side and pick up the pace in his mind, read defenses better than Mallet, with better than Mallet accuracy, I think we've got something special. I do feel like 2016 is his learning year. I don't think we will see his capabilities on full display until 2017 but I'm hoping we see some real potential.

Only time will tell as there are some significant IF'S in there.

I think BY FAR this was the best solution given the circumstances. It doesn't guarantee anything though. Sometimes you can make the best decision with a given set of facts, and still have a poor outcome. But I've got to give Kudo's to BOB, RS, and McNair for at least taking a big swing. I'd rather swing and miss then keep laying down bunts time after time. What has that gotten us?
 
I'm pretty impressed with his 1st press conference.

Whether he was well coached for the conference or not (and the coaching showed with his "when did you decide" miscue). He said everything I wanted to hear and he has a confidence about himself, not a cockiness. Important difference. I always viewed Mallett as more cocky than confident.

IMO, the bolded is a combination of talent/ability and coaching. Big Ben and Schaub are almost identical in size, but it takes eleventythreehundred guys to take Big Ben down and a hint of pressure for Schaub to go fetal. It's my opinion that Schaub was coached to take the sack rather than risk a turnover. Typical Kubiak turtle offense. Big Ben was allowed to use his athleticism to extend plays and flourished with it. It's a tale of different coaching philosophies. Schaub was mobile enough to run the bootlegs, etc. but Kubiak preferred the "live to fight another down" philosophy.

I can't wait to see what OB and GG can get out of Os. One way or the other, it's going to be career defining for all concerned parties. I'm hoping they hit a home run and didn't strike out swinging. Either way, they didn't strike out looking.

Two quotes related to his first start vs. Chicago:
Osweiler looked like more of a Kubiak quarterback than Manning has this year—though that’s a bit unfair because Manning just hasn’t had the same arm strength and admitted in training camp he had no feeling in his passing fingertips. The Denver OL was atrocious...historically rarely sacked Peyton Manning was sacked 16 times
 
I understand people being skeptical of this signing esp with the dollar amount (that is "overall" and after 2 years we can cut bait). However those that are skeptical what other options did the Texans have before the draft with a QB that is,worth a damn in FA? We bitched and moaned about hoyer for 18+ weeks (as fans). After the playoff train wreck. Everbody and their dog knows Hoyers days are numbered here with that contract. Sure, I'd love Savage to be the guy but he has been hurt.. i'd roll with Weeden and Tom as backups at this point. Hoyer would be boo'd out of the stadium if he started again,we all know this. Looking at this team, how would trading 3 or 4 high draft picks over the next 2 years benefitted long term Texan plans? (Guessing on the amount to move up) .
I look at it this way, it is a sheyot or get off the pot move for the Texans
This is what we all wanted. Rick and Bill get this right we will be happy and if they are wrong we will be happy, they will be gone.

On a side note, i am racking my brain here.when was the last time a team gave up a lot of draft picks for one player and it worked for that team? I have selective memory or some say a bad one. But the Vikings walker one didn't help them, saints williams one, redskins rg3 one didn't. .

Another random thought. .lot of pressure and expectations on coach,player and franchise when one player is the "savior" of a franchise when we all damn well know it takes a team and luck with injuries.

Makes sense to me. There are a few other things to look at, like size, arm strength, the offense they played in, the school they played for, the competition... & I'm just saying. I know Parcells rules, I'm just adding other traditional boxes that need to be checked.

All of Parcells' rules, & the other boxes... AJ McCarron, Connor Cook, Kevin Hogan they check them all. But in today's NFL, these are not the guys that are coveted.

I think teams are looking for lightning in a bottle, a savior, instead of looking for that kingpin to building a team. Right or wrong, this is where the NFL is heading. Well, this is where we are.

100% agree. If this isn't a swing for the fences, then I don't know what one is (and I played a lot f baseball as a kid).

How would you guys feel if Texans @ Broncos was the kickoff game next season? Good chance it happens but I still think the NFL will go with SB rematch Panthers @ Broncos

Great post. Really. But I think we need to change the narrative here. When we're talking millions of dollars a year, the difference between the contract Osweiler signed & the Broncos final offer is peanuts. A pittance.

TheIR final offer was 3 years $16M, $48M total. We'll pay him $50M over the first three years. The 4th year is really inconsequential. He'll either play so bad that he'll be cut, or he'll play so well we offer him an extension.

The money was the same he basically didn't want to be in Denver.
 
I liked the move. BO is unproven but he has a good chance at panning out. Getting Goff or Wentz would have cost too many add'l picks and they would have been sat down on the bench for a while. I saw Brock have some good games and bad games last year but at least he has a little experience, size and a live arm. I like Miller too. This is the first time I haven't been looking negatively at my tickets invoices in several years. BTW, Brock Osweiler just called while I was typing this (a canned message to season ticket holders). I said "hey, Brock" but didn't get a reply. Whodathunkit?

We gave more money with less taxes, in a warm stadium, with the ability to turn on the T.V and not hear continue to hear comparisons to Manning and Elway in that market...Add in the AFC South v AFC West...

His base in year 3 is supposed to be 18M, so the first 3 years is actually 55M.

But I still believe his being sore at the Broncos came into play.
