The Johnny "Football" Manziel NFL thread

Browns’ offense appears to be moving on from Manziel

Josh McCown is firmly entrenched as the starting quarterback in Cleveland, to the extent that Johnny Manziel, a first-round pick of the Browns’ next year, appears to be largely an afterthought at Organized Team Activities.

After reporting on the first week of OTAs, Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland describes Manziel as “a fish out of water” in the offense the Browns are installing. Grossi writes that the Browns don’t seem to be developing Manziel so much as they’re moving on from him.

At the practice the media were allowed to watch, Manziel seemed too eager to run and not confident enough in his passing. And Grossi reports that one source who witnessed another practice says Manziel was actually even worse in a session that the media didn’t see.

The bottom line is that 13 months after he was drafted, Manziel still hasn’t done anything to make the Browns think he’s ever going to be their franchise quarterback. McCown is the starter for now, and someone else will probably need to be found to be the long-term answer in the future.

Joe Thomas: Johnny Manziel will be a starter in the NFL
MAY 29,2015

Browns left tackle Joe Thomas took some time during OTA’s on Friday to talk with SiriusXM Radio’s Bruce Murray and Kirk Morrison. The Pro Bowl tackle was very complementary of both of his quarterbacks, Josh McCown and Johnny Manziel. “It’s been really fun to get to know Josh McCown … There’s a lot of things that I am learning from him.” He goes on to say, “Johnny’s approach this offseason has been great. What we’ve seen from him this offseason is a much more professional, much more serious player.” Thomas goes on to say that he believes Manziel has the talent to be a starter in the league.

McCown thinks a competition with Manziel would be a distraction

Josh McCown is firmly entrenched as the Browns’ starting quarterback, and he likes it that way.

McCown said he thinks that if he were competing with Johnny Manziel for the starting job, it would be a distraction that took away from the work the team is doing this offseason.

“More than anything, for me, I just believe it takes away from any kind of distraction that you can have and the team can just move in one direction, regardless of who that guy is,” McCown told Cleveland.com. “It’s helpful to just say, ‘this is our guy until something happens and he’s not our guy.’ But I agree with that philosophy and that approach. It doesn’t take anything away from our group and it doesn’t take away from what Johnny and Thad [Lewis] and Connor [Shaw] are doing. We’re all working together.”

McCown has been on the other side of it: In 2013, he played so well in relief of the injured Jay Cutler that many in Chicago thought McCown should have remained the starter even after Cutler healed. But McCown always insisted that he was the backup, and that the starting job was Cutler’s.

And now McCown is staying consistent to that philosophy. Now the Browns need McCown to play well enough to avoid a quarterback controversy.

Awesome. Johnny Manziel is a failure of a #1 pick. Makes me feel like such a big person to keep bringing it up & kicking g this kid while he's lying flat on his face.

Johnny Manziel harassed by fan at golf tournament, but worked through it with security officials
By Mary Kay Cabot, Northeast Ohio Media Group

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel was harassed by a fan at the Byron Nelson Classic on Saturday, but he handled it appropriately, his agent Erik Burkhardt told Northeast Ohio Media Group.

Burkhardt said Manziel responded to the harassment by talking to security officials at the PGA tournament in Irving, Texas.

That's why Manziel, a Texas native, was photographed talking to police outside the Four Seasons hotel in Irving.

Burkhardt, reached Sunday morning, said he was in church with Manziel in Dallas.

Irving police spokesman James McLellan told NEOMG that an 18-year-old male fan began harassing the Browns quarterback near the Four Seasons' pool. Manziel eventually threw a water bottle at the kid, escalating the confrontation. One of Manziel's friends stepped in to intervene on his behalf and hotel security also got involved, McLellan said.

Police were called and officers spoke to both parties. Neither decided to press charges. Police did not detect any sign of intoxication with Manziel, McLellan said.

Johnny Manziel harassed by fan at pool

Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel threw a water bottle at a badgering fan Saturday at the AT&T Byron Nelson golf tournament in an incident that was dismissed as "fairly straightforward" by a police spokesman in Irving, Texas.

Irving public information officer James McLellan told ESPN on Sunday that no charges were filed, and there was no evidence that Manziel was "intoxicated or even had been drinking."

A Browns source also dismissed the incident as a non-story, telling ESPN that Manziel should not be held responsible for obnoxious fans who approach him aggressively.

The incident took place in the pool area at the Four Seasons Hotel, which is part of the golf course property, McLellan said.

"There was a kid -- I'll call him a kid, he was 18 -- at the pool area," McLellan told ESPN on Sunday. "The kid had been asking [Manziel] for a couple hours for his autograph, and he wouldn't give it to him.

"That turned into badgering on the kid's part, and it reached the point where Johnny Manziel threw a bottle of water at the kid. I don't know if it hit him. I guess I would say that ramped it up a bit."

McLellan said the 32-ounce water bottle Manziel threw was about three-quarters full. A witness told police that the bottle hit a brick wall.

A friend of Manziel's then stepped between him and the 18-year-old and pushed him.

"That's about the time hotel security and our officers stepped in," McLellan said. "Try to put a stop to it."

A close friend of Manziel who was one of eight people with his group told ESPN that the quarterback became frustrated when a picture-seeking fan in a Texas A&M polo consistently heckled and grabbed the quarterback's arm in the course area.

As Manziel left the golf course, the fan yelled, "good luck never starting in the NFL," the friend said. Manziel said "What?" and threw the bottle, which the friend claimed was empty, toward the ground as his friends told him to ignore the heckler.

The fan was about 20 yards away and Manziel threw the bottle in the fan's direction but not close to his body and more like a football spike, said the friend, who remembered the fan yelling, "Good throw, Johnny."

Police were in the area and asked Manziel's camp some questions about what had happened, the friend said. "There was no malicious intent. We separated the situation," said the friend, who spoke with the cops along with Manziel. "We told the cops, 'Will you please make sure there's distance between us?'"

Manziel was polite to the fan the first 10 times he sought a picture, telling him he was with his girlfriend and friends he hadn't seen in a while, the friend said. He didn't want to take hundreds of pictures with fans.

Eventually, the fan grabbed Manziel from behind and Manziel asked, "'Can you please not do that? Just please leave me alone,'" the friend said.

Manziel was with friends who were waiting on an Uber ride outside of the golf course when they encountered the fan again. Among the fan's insults to Manziel, the friend said, was "Ryan Tannehill is way better than you."

McLellan explained that the police cooperate with the charities involved in the tournament, so they try if possible to avoid arrests with drunk or disorderly fans.

McLellan said a friend of Manziel called a car, and he left.

"Ultimately the bottom line is how are you getting out of here, it's time to go," McLellan said. "It ended and they left."

The 18-year-old declined to press charges for the shove, which could have been simple assault.

"That may result in a citation, a ticket, to someone," McLellan said. "But the fact the kid didn't want to press charges ... we were like, 'OK time to go.'"

There was no police report written on the incident.

The Browns said they would have no comment on the incident but said Manziel called the team Saturday night to explain what had happened.

Photos of Manziel speaking to Irving police began circulating on social media earlier Sunday, prompting the former Heisman Trophy winner's agent to tell Northeast Ohio Media Group that his client reacted appropriately to the heckler.

Erik Burkhardt, Manziel's agent, also told Northeast Ohio Media Group that he and Manziel, who has struggled with off-field issues since being drafted by the Browns last season, were attending church on Sunday morning.

The 22-year-old Manziel was released from a rehab treatment facility last month and apologized to the Browns organization and fans, vowing to "regain everyone's trust." He moved out of his downtown Cleveland apartment earlier this month and into a suburban golf community, a source told ESPN.

Manziel also had a run-in with a fan in November 2014 during a late-night altercation in downtown Cleveland. No arrests were made, and the fan ultimately apologized to Manziel in a Facebook post.

After the fan incidents in Cleveland and Texas, Manziel could consider hiring security, the friend who was with Manziel on Saturday told ESPN.

Pettine: Browns haven't moved on from Manziel

The Cleveland Browns aren't leaving Johnny Manziel in the dust.

At least not according to coach Mike Pettine, who took exception on Tuesday to a report from ESPN Cleveland's Tony Grossi, who stated that the Browns are, "by all appearances, moving on" from the second-year passer.

"It doesn't thrill me," Pettine said, per NFL Media's Aditi Kinkhabwala. "I don't pay much attention to what's going on outside of the building, but when it potentially can drive a spike between the staff and the team, I have issues with it. To me, to talk about how a team's potentially moved on from a player, or he's not in plans, that's just irresponsible."

Grossi wrote Friday that Manziel was a "fish out of water" in a conservative Browns attack that plans to prioritize the run while asking veteran Josh McCown to safely manage games.
Grossi watched Manziel practice last week and wrote that the former first-rounder was "unchanged from his rookie year." A source told Grossi that Manziel was "worse" the second day of OTAs.

Pettine on Tuesday dismissed concerns over the offense moving away from Manziel's improvisational gifts, saying that new play-caller John DeFilippo "will tailor a game plan" to match what his quarterback does best.

"I'm the last guy -- the last guy -- that's going to take Johnny Manziel's athleticism away from him," DeFilippo said in May, per The News-Herald. "Johnny's game is just a little unorthodox. He likes to escape the pocket. He does a lot of impromptu stuff. The thing Johnny is doing right now is he is improving his game of being an NFL quarterback. He's making great strides in doing that."

At the time, DeFilippo cited Manziel's top challenge as calling out appropriate pass protections at the line, another reminder that Cleveland is still working to mold the former Texas A&M star into a functional pro.

It's worth noting that DeFilippo was with the Raiders when Oakland rewrote the playbook to make the most of Terrelle Pryor's athleticism, liberally using pistol concepts to unleash the mobile passer for 576 yards rushing in 2013.

Pryor has since struggled to resemble an NFL quarterback. Manziel is under pressure to carve out a better fate, but until he can master basic elements under center, Johnny is little threat to see meaningful playing time.

"We all feel good about where (Manziel) is," Pettine said. "You could see, he shows some frustration out there because he wants it to be perfect, he wants it to be done right, he wants to do it the way that we're coaching him to do it. He's probably been the hardest guy on himself."

Johnny's excellent day...

Manziel was scheduled to sign autographs at the Fan Fest from 2:30 to 3 p.m. along with former Browns receivers Reggie Langhorne and Brian Brennan, but he arrived fashionably late, at about 3:03 p.m. By that time, about 1,000 fans, some getting antsy, had gathered in his area, with only about 250 of them wearing the requisite wristbands to receive his autograph.

Fans chanted "Here we go Johnny, here we go!" And "Johnny! Johnny!'' during the event.

One by one they approached the table and had Manziel signing footballs, a Gatorade cooler, the back of T-shirts, money --- and a baby.

A few hours later, Manziel signed more autographs and took more photos with fans at his good buddy Haden's second annual charity softball game. Then, Manziel, who was drafted last year by the Padres, went out and won the home run derby, beating out such NFL stars as Richard Sherman, Larry Fitzgerald and Kam Chancellor.

Manziel smashed a 360-foot shot to center that dazzled the crowd of 5,206. He also hit several home run during the game, which included Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson, 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, Bengals receiver A.J. Green and Broncos safety T.J. Ward.

During the home run contest, NFL Hall of Famer and former Major League Baseball player Deion Sanders, a friend of Haden's, ran in from the infield to announce to the crowd, "Hey everybody, I want you to know my money's on Johnny Manziel.''

Browns QB Johnny Manziel living with former high school coach

Another step in the changes Johnny Manzielhas made this offseason: He is living in the Cleveland area with a former high school coach who had a tremendous influence on him.

That's the word from Cleveland Brownscornerback Joe Haden, who visited ESPN's First Take on Wednesday morning and revealed that Manziel was living with his former coach from Kerrville, Texas.

Haden didn't specify the name of the coach, but an athletic department official from Kerrville Tivy High School confirmed that it is Julius Scott, Kerrville's former offensive coordinator and a major influence on Manziel.

The Houston Chronicle said that Scott was the disciplinarian for Manziel and his high school team. Manziel told the Chronicle that Scott "had the single biggest impact on my development as a player." Manziel added he didn't get emotional after winning the Heisman Trophy as a freshman until he saw Scott.

"When I saw him, I just lost it," Manziel told the Chronicle. "I bawled my eyes out right there. I told him, 'I would never have been here without you.'"

Manziel spent 10 weeks in a treatment facility and left in April just before the Browns' offseason program began. Manziel told Haden he needed the time away, the Browns cornerback said.

"He's doing all the right steps," said Haden, who has become good friends with Manziel. The pair attended the Cavaliers' Game 3 win over the Warriors in the NBA Finals on Tuesday.

Manziel has not spoken to the media since he left the treatment facility. The Browns' final open offseason practice is set for Thursday, and a minicamp is scheduled for June 16-18.

Like him or not, it'd be a hell of a story to see this guy resurrect his career and actually turn into a starting caliber NFL quarterback. The jury is still out on that though, but he's at least doing most of the right things at this point.

I'm not sure what you mean. If you're referencing his stay in rehab, well then there's a lot of guys out there you need to be making fun of, as well as a few Hall of Famers.

My comment had nothing to do with rehab. It was about this over-hyped player coming into the NFL and acting like all the hard work and dedication required by every other NFL QB does not apply to him.

Cool. That's why I asked.

I am curious though whether this hatred for Manziel keeps some of you awake at night. Hate is far too great a burden to bare for someone most of you have never even been in the same room with, let alone actually met.

Nothing he does keeps me awake at night. The only time I've thought about him is seeing a new reply in this thread....oh yeah, and all the undeserved hype he gets on NFL Network because jersey sales, not talent, drives coverage (see Tebow for another over-hype example driven by jersey sales). There is only so much they can cover on Total Access on any given night, so spending any of that finite time on a guy that lacks the passion and dedication the league is a complete waste of time.

It's nothing personal. Just observations from a fan of the NFL.

Nah... it's personal.

Underserved hype... pssh. I'm guessing nothing before the NFL counts? Because that's the reason there's hype around JFF. RG3, Andrew Luck, etc... all benefitted from it in varying degrees. There are more Jadeveon Clowney Jerseys out there than there should be.

& as much attention they give him, that he doesn't deserve, an awful lot of you spend an awful lot of attention in threads dedicated to him.

How long does it take to post in a thread? 5 minutes? So there you have it, I spend approx. 5 minutes in a day of 1,440 minutes giving Manziel any thought.

As far as it being personal, maybe for you it is, but for me he's like any other entertainer. What they do does not affect my life and certainly has no bearing on my mental well-being. I have no emotional attachment to any athlete not named Earl Campbell.

With regards to achievements before the NFL, I don't watch college. I am an NFL fan. What they do when they enter the league is what matters to me, and with Manziel, he partied instead of studied. He deserves no respect because he earned no respect.

The whole world's hatin' on Johnny ...

... fwiw, at least 'Johnny Idiot Face' gets to hang out in the same insult as LeBron.

Johnny Football has been dead for some time. Johnny Manziel ain't long for this league, he does not have the competency or skill set of a NFL QB.

Supposedly, Manziel just stated that he is discarding not only "Johnny Football," but also the money sign. Indeed Johnny Football is dead. Manziel's old mantra is apparently joining his NFL competency and skill set.

Just waiting for all the JFF fanboys to call Manziel a hater.

Johnny Manziel: 'I feel bad' about being a distraction last season

BEREA, Ohio -- Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel said Wednesday he will no longer do his trademark money sign -- part of a larger effort to quiet the distraction his persona had become to his teammates.

"The money sign will not be back. I will not be making it out there," Manziel said Wednesday in his first comments to Browns media since he ended a 10-week rehab stay in early April.

Manziel admitted that during his rookie season last year -- which he termed "a disaster" Wednesday -- he was a distraction off the field at times.

"I feel bad about that today," he said. "I feel bad about that throughout the last months of my life really thinking back and seeing how much of my life outside of this field and outside of this locker room was documented. It's not fair for Joe Haden to be having to answer questions about me every day. It's not fair for Joe Thomas and all these guys to just continue to have questions asked about me. I don't think that's fair at all and I don't want that on them."

He added that Johnny Manziel could not handle the "Johnny Football" persona that had been created around him at Texas A&M and via social media.

"I think it just overtook who I was as a person, too," Manziel said. "I think at times Johnny Football probably took over me a little bit, too, and I bought into that. ... I think I didn't do my best to hush things down, push down the hype.

"I think at times I welcomed it with immaturity and just accepted that a little bit. And that's my fault. At the end of the day everything that happened last year is not on anybody else but myself."

He said he could not handle the hype and spotlight that focused on him and he wants to "suffocate that a little bit." Moving forward, he wants to be conscious of the effect his presence has on his teammates.

"Whatever I can do to help quiet the noise that has surrounded this team and surrounded myself, I don't want that anymore. I just want to be another player on this team that is in here trying to get better and just trying to be successful," he said.

A company called Already LLC, headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, recently transferred trademarks it owns -- Johnny Baseball, Johnny Basketball, Johnny Sports, Johnny Golf and Johnny Soccer -- to Manziel. Manziel is still in the process of securing Johnny Football.

Manziel also emphasized his desire to focus on football and limit the attention on his personal life.

"My focus is on football. It's what I'm here to do. It's what I love to do and that's what I'm here to talk about today," he said.

"My private life, and what goes on, that's documented about I think enough," he added. "So, for me today, I'm sitting here and eager to talk about the 2015 Cleveland Browns, what we have this year and we have in this locker room moving forward and what are the goals and what we want to do this season. That's really my focus. Everything else, I'm trying to really close a chapter on my life and move forward and really continue to build on the things I've done throughout this offseason."

Manziel checked himself into rehab after the season "in order to be a better family member, friend and teammate," one of his advisers said at the time.

Manziel apologized to the team and fans, and has tried to keep a lower profile since he left rehab. He's been to Cavs games, and was involved in a water-bottle-throwing incident with a persistent autograph seeker, but has been quiet otherwise.

"I think I've done a good job throughout this offseason of really trying to get back to my roots and who I am as a person. ... I got back to doing some things that I grew up doing that I really enjoy that are quiet, that occupy my time in a better way other than traveling or anything else of that sort," he said.

Donte Whitner described Manziel's rookie season as "disastrous." Manziel started two games and completed 51.4 percent of his passes with no touchdowns and two interceptions. His passer rating was 42.0, and he ended the season watching the finale in the locker room after missing the team's walkthrough the day before because he was out the previous night.

Manziel has been working with the second team this offseason. The Browns signed Josh McCown in the offseason and said he would be the starter during offseason work and heading into training camp.

He's saying all the right things. And he appears to be doing all the right things too. I applaud him for that.

I still don't think he has the right makeup to be a successful NFL QB, but if he continues down this path he will at least put himself in position for an honest shot at it.

He's saying all the right things. And he appears to be doing all the right things too. I applaud him for that.

Not me.

He's obviously too self confident about his image. The people who go on to be somebodies... that happen to start off like JFF, don't apologize for this kind of crap. Look at Rex, Gronk, Sherman...

I agree over the last two years Manziel has been pouring fuel on the fire, making it worse. But no more so than Deione. Not being able to back it up on the field didn't help.

Faithful fans wait hours to get autograph of Johnny Manziel

There was not a road trip far enough, temperature hot enough or line long enough to keep almost 400 Aggie fans from meeting Johnny Manziel for his big return to College Station.

Some stood in line — at times in 100-degree heat — for three hours to meet the 2012 Heisman-winning Texas A&M quarterback Sunday at Aggieland Outfitters where he hosted his first public autograph signing session since being drafted last year by the Cleveland Browns.
Mason Okruhlik, a 10-year-old from Cypress wearing a black No. 2 A&M jersey, traveled with his family to see his hero and was one of the first groups inside the store.

“It was a pleasure to meet him and he’ll always be my favorite player,” Okruhlik said.

Representatives from Manziel’s licensing agent — Panini Authentic — oversaw the event that cost 350 fans between $125 and $155 per ticket, depending on the size of the item being signed. It sold out in less than 24 hours on two separate occasions.

The single-file line to see “Johnny Football” wrapped around inside the store on University Drive and continued outside all the way around the building. Manziel kicked off the session a half-hour earlier than expected at 5:30 p.m. With Kanye West’s Power playing over the store speakers, the same way he entered Kyle Field as a player, he high-fived his way through the crowd.

He took a seat at a table in the center of the store where he shook hands with fans and, for more than two hours, signed a wide array of items that included jerseys, posters and footballs, as well as Browns and Texas A&M replica helmets.

“The biggest thing is seeing the kids excited,” Aggieland Outfitters spokesperson Dallas Shipp said. “It’s all smiles all day.”
And the giddiness didn't just coming from the children.

Dan Kingslien, A&M class of 2003, and his wife, Stacey, drove from Austin and spent the day in College Station with their 7-year-old daughter, Madelyn, before seeing her favorite football player. The Kingsliens had a print signed, which Madelyn suggested to be framed and hung in their living room.

Manziel threw for 7,820 yards and 63 touchdowns while leading the Aggies to an 11-2 record in his 2012 Heisman campaign, which also was the school’s first year in the SEC, but his lackluster rookie season with the Browns did not change the impression for fans.

“He’s the most exciting player I’ve ever seen in my life. I’m 67, and we’ll always love him in Aggieland,” said John May, Okruhlik’s grandfather, as he made his way out of the store.

Kristina Goldstein, who made the three-hour drive from Weatherford to have Manziel sign a football, found some shade next to the building toward the end of the line at 6:30 p.m. when the temperature hovered around 90 degrees.

“I was standing during football games in the band, so it’s no big deal, really,” Goldstein said.

Manziel, one of the most popular Aggie football players in the team's history, declined interviews with the media.

Michael Pickel stood at the very end of the line with a jersey in hand as the sun started to dip down, just barely out of the shade. He said his drive from Austin, the price of the ticket and the wait were all worth it.

“It’s Johnny Manziel,” Pickel said. “Why wouldn’t you come out?”

OK, not specific to Manziel, WTF makes you worship someone so much you stand in line hours to get a signature from him? I'm not standing in line to get in a club, restaurant, or get the signature of Thomas freaking Jefferson. Maybe to have dinner with TfJ.

I agreed, until I thought 'I wouldn't stand in line for Earl ... well, yeah I'd stand in line for Earl.' There are a few that I'd stand in line for, but it's out of appreciation, not idolization - that's the marquee difference. The folks in that presser adhere to the latter, which I agree is FUBAR, and only folks with my last name would garner such attention. Hakeem worked hard representing me and my city, I'd stand in line to shake his hand and get a basketball signed.

Hours could be a bit of a stretch, but I'm patient with an hour plus or minus if it would assist in decorating my fan cave.

Manziel with 3 TDs in Browns "Orange and Brown" game... from the pocket, ball out on time. Doesn't look like same guy here.

Don't look now, but there might be a new Johnny Manziel in Cleveland
Mike Garfolo|Fox Sports

There was an incident at Cleveland Browns practice recently. Let's call it a momentary regression with a bit of a silver lining.

Johnny Manziel, frustrated with a bad play, spiked the football into the ground. Browns offensive coordinator John DeFilippo didn't like the way Manziel lost his poise for a moment, so he yanked him from the drill.

The message was clear. Manziel, a fiery competitor in college who is learning to harness his personality for good, had to control his emotions, as he had been doing so well since the start of training camp.

"But to me, I saw it as a positive, too," Browns head coach Mike Pettine told FOX Sports while standing in the south end zone of Ohio Stadium, home of the Ohio State Buckeyes and for one night the host of the Browns' Orange-and-Brown scrimmage. "He cares. He was upset.

"I just think that's a product of that room. (Quarterbacks coach) Kevin O'Connell and John DeFilippo have done just such a good job with him. And to have a veteran like Josh McCown in the room, people don't realize the effect of having a mentor like that ... is going to have on him."

There were a lot of positive things to say about Manziel on Friday after his two-touchdown performance in the live scrimmage.

He scanned the field like a veteran, quickly coming off his primary receiver several times to find his open secondary read. He kept himself under control while scrambling and backing away from pressure.

On his first touchdown, he put the ball in a good spot -- high and away from the defender -- on a quick out to tight end E.J. Bibbs. His second touchdown was a thing of beauty. After looking right, he turned backside and threw a strike to wide receiver Josh Lenz off the back hip of defensive back Kendall James.

"I wouldn't make a huge deal about it, but it's progress for me," Manziel said. "It's better than I played last year in the scrimmage. A year later, there's a lot of progress. I'm happy about it and happy about stringing some good days together. That's what I wanted to do."

That quote, and the spirit behind it, is what was most impressive about Manziel on Friday. After a rocky rookie season in which he was caught by cameras flipping the bird toward the Washington Redskins' sideline in a preseason game, Manziel's body language was flawless here.

It began after his first throw of team drills when he was just a hair long on a deep ball for Lenz. It actually was probably a perfect throw but Lenz slowed a bit as he jostled with the defender, so it seemed like an overthrow. No biggie. As Lenz got back to the huddle and Manziel was listening for the play call in his helmet, the quarterback extended his arm for an encouraging fist pump to the young receiver.

That first drive ended with a sack after Manziel tried to escape. He returned to the sideline and huddled with his coaches and fellow quarterbacks. He came back to lead the two touchdown drives, one of which included a heck of a throw across his body while escaping to his left.

"You can't create false adversity. It just has to happen," McCown said. "When you go through some things like tonight where you have a couple of drops that don't go your way and you pull yourself out of it, that's the main thing.

"The (touchdown) throw (to Lenz) was terrific, but just the way he battled through it was awesome. That's the mark of making progress, in my opinion, and of a quarterback maturing."

Manziel didn't get any reps with the first team on Friday. All of those went to McCown. But Pettine said it was because of injuries and limited reps and that Manziel will work with the starters in the preseason.

And he might have even earned a few more of them.

Hopefully he will mature with age and time. A lot of players start out cocky in the league. And hopefully you hope that they mature with time. As well as age.

Manziel, who early last week was said to have a minor elbow soreness that would in no way keep him out of the preseason opener.....kept him out of the preseason opener. Appears that he has developed an elbow tendonitis. As this condition is typically an overuse injury, it may be concluded that Manziel has never put in the necessary work into becoming a professional QB to have ever experienced an overuse injury. Not particularly a problem you want to develop early in your career as a QB.

Had to quit practicing today due to pain... seen pointing to inside of arm just above the elbow.

Didn't Manziel play a lot of baseball growing up?

Elbow pain at that spot could be due to overuse from throwing. Was he a pitcher?

That little sucker has a strong arm for a little guy & he throws a very pretty, very catchable ball.
