Texans OTA offseason workouts 2015

My humble opinion is that even if Nuk is not a number 1 in the sense that teams game plan for him like they did for AJ, he is still good enough that unless we are talking about a good DB, he will still typically come up with the catch more often than not. The main thing I look for in a receiver is this; can he catch the ball? Nuk has show me he can and in an aerial battle, he is a brawler. Besides, if Mallet/Hoyer is any good and we can spread the ball around, hopefully it won't be too much of an issue that he doesn't regularly command double teams. I do agree that people are underrating just how much pressure AJ took off the WR2 though.

Am I the only one who thinks that the head coach that agreed to Hard Knocks doesn't even want the local media at OTAs seems a tiny bit weird?

How often were practices closed to the media at this time last season?
OTAs were open, I think except for a couple of days.
Am I the only one who thinks that the head coach that agreed to Hard Knocks...
He didn't agree. He was told. McNair thinks this expands his brand.

And I can see him using this early time to install the workarounds they'll be using to deal with Hard Knocks and to educate the players on what locker room discussions are okay to air...

and what things aren't a good idea to discuss on worldwide television...

Imagine if those cameras were coming to your house for a month. Can't walk around in your underwear, gotta shave every day, gotta clean up your language, gotta look "important" and "busy", no picking your nose or scratching your ass, no bragging about that brown bomb you just unloaded, no fighting, no biting...

See, that's why I didn't want the Texans on Hard Knocks, IF they are doing that. If coaches are using these valuable sessions on grooming the team on how to act on a freaking TV show, then that means less football instruction.

I think it is generally conceded that OB didn't want HK, but capitulated to his bosses desire. It's a pretty common corporate move.

see, I would think McNair would be more worried about the image we'd portray than OB wOuld.

If these closed practices are OB's response to being told he would be on Hard Knocks I would think it is to get a few days of practice without the distraction of the regular media before he had to deal with the circus coming to town.

First of all, OB would not have to agree to anything. that's above his pay grade.
So you're telling me that McNair said to hell with what the guy I hired to get our team to the SB thinks is best for team development, I'm going for the TV exposure, dammit.
I guess he can do what he wants whether the coach thinks it's good for the team or not.

In all fairness to McNair, this is not the first time he's been approached to do Hard Knocks. In past years he put aside his wants & whims for the prudence & wisdom of his coach & it never got him a Super Bowl.

What's the point of being king if you can't get your way from time to time?

seriously I'm not gleaning much in the way of serious improvement/development off official website or what is allowed to be presented to general public for consumption. Texan OTA's just seem like another ho hum camp, maybe hardknocks will spruce things up but really hope coaching staff works harder to identify player strengths & do a better job putting guys in positions to succeed. Secondary, linebacker & offensive line all have vacancies waiting to be filled so question vision (expansion year 13) 2nd confusing draft in a row by this staff, players released & players signed to form a 53 man squad. I just don't see anything but an average team fighting with other average teams, middle of pack. Maybe your right, Mr. McNair passion is creating wealth not winning meaningful football games because that would require too much change :twocents:

This is what I've said all along, the McNair's are all about marketing winning has and will always come 2nd. It's all about the $$$$$. Nothing has changed except they may have upgraded the HC position. (Hopefully)

BTW, I thought the McNair's were hands off qwners? LOL

Checking around, it's more normal than not for teams to have only opened one OTA to the media this week. ARI, BUF, NE, PHI, BAL, examples. What was unusual was Texans opening first three OTAs in 2014, (iirc).

This isn't new, either...

Patriots Rookies Petrified Of Going Off Script, Can’t Answer The Simplest Questions
BOSTON (CBS) – Maybe you’ve heard, but the New England Patriots have been in the news lately.

There’s a lot of pressure on the defending Super Bowl champions from the media, so you can only imagine how much that pressure is magnified on these rookies, who are facing questions for the first time as professionals.

Organized team introducing first round pick Malcom Brown on Wednesday, the rest of the rookie class were made available to the media on Thursday, and man were they petrified of saying the wrong thing.

On Friday morning, 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Toucher & Rich played some audio from Patriots OTAs, and it’s clear the fresh crop of players don’t want to rock the boat in their first appearance with the media.

They were unable to answer the simplest questions, including ones about being a fan of hockey, video games and basically everything else.

The rooks toed the company line (just as head coach Bill Belichick likely instructed them to do), and gave the reporters absolutely nothing in terms of soundbites. Listen below to the rookies being rattled:

Not that it matters with the hamstring, but Strong is required to be at the NFLPA "Rookie Premiere" May 28-31 along with 40+ other rookies who will be missing OTAs for photo and marketing ops in Los Angeles.

I think these 3-day uniform try-on sessions are much more important than learning football. :truck:

(And speaking of red collars, why do we have colored collars on our jerseys? No likey.)

Patriots Rookies Petrified Of Going Off Script, Can’t Answer The Simplest Questions

I'd be just as interested in knowing how many and which teams had their OTAs open to the media this week. After the painful lack of football information available in the early offseason, aggravated by the late Draft scheduling, having very few crumbs thrown at the fans now, seems to fly in the face of the NFL's and Texans' stated mission of promoting of the "enhanced fan experience." JMHO

The Texans care about the fan gameday experience.

The NFL only cares about. TV $$$$ and PR. Otherwise the draft would still be held on a weekend, no games in LOndon etc....

My question is do season ticketholders have to pay for the game in England. Do owners get to double dip? If so I would imagine the Texans will be playing in London very soon.

I think these 3-day uniform try-on sessions are much more important than learning football.

Why are these guys in particular there? For instance why Stong instead of 1st rounder KJo or even 2nd rounder McKinney, and why Karlos Williams instead of anyone else under the sun? Just seems awfully random.

It appears that except for 2 exceptions, the candidates are the expected higher profile (more marketable) WRs, RBs, and QBs.

No idea.

Why is there only one defensive player out of 40+? (And why is he wearing #62?) NFLPA idiocracy.

Ya it appears it's just as simple as that. Looks like this is a care package specifically aimed at fantasy keepers. (w/ a side of Leonard Williams for some reason)

I suspect the primary reason for the collars are to distinguish the Texans from all the other bland blue jerseys in the league. Even though
you may not like them, I bet you don't get them mixed up with anyone else.

the red collars have been around since the NFL switched from Reebok to Nike as the uni supplier some 2-3 years back...

And I wry sincerely apologize to the anti-Schaub crowd for this particular photo but I wanted illustrate how far back the red collars went.
So very sorry...

guess I'm lucky negative rep doesn't exist any longer

OTAs Update -- The Texans resume OTAs on Monday and there will be an update at the beginning of the week ,while the remaining practices are closed to the Media. There will be three open dates for the media to attend. Stay tuned to the site for OTA updates and player interviews heading into mandatory mini-camp later in the month.

@SOTTexans I’ve heard multiple subtle references now that injury held Fiedorowicz back in ‘14. See Week 2 ‘foot’… lisfranc?

If it was a Lisfranc, there would be a good chance that Fiedorowicz would have been done for the season. One thing is for certain, at a time, Fiedorowicz struggled with the speed of the game early in the year and he slowly understood the nuances of the game as the season progressed.

This quote came from Fiedorowicz in early December about his rookie year adjustments.

“The game is starting to slow down a bit,” explained Fiedorowicz. “At first I was kinda like, a lot of things going through my mind, nerves. Now everything is calming down and I’m able to go out there and analyze the defense.”

@SOTTexans How has Lonnie Ballentine lined up? Is he playing FS or SS? Sub packages or starting next to Rahim Moore?...

Lonnie Ballentine was a participant at Texans OTAs when they opened for 2015, and this was after a year on the injured reserve with a hamstring injury. The Texans worked on installing their base defense and there is more expectation that, for this season, the safety position will be interchangeable. If there is one thing that Ballentine does not lack, it is his ability to cover ground. At 6-3 and 215 lbs., Ballentine is fitting the mold Bill O’Brien wants in football players, big and fast.

@SOTTexans How does Tom Savage look since he took that late hit vs Indy?

Tom Savage was a surprise during the opening of OTAs mainly with his confidence on the field. As a rookie he was in sit-back-and-learn mode, but at OTAs, he was controlling the huddle and calls at the line of scrimmage. It was only day one but he was hot and cold throwing the football, which is expected with the amount of time off since the team had worked together in an offense. Savage’s progression will be one thing to watch as camp carries on.

@SOTTexans What's a noticeable difference between Mallett and Hoyer that would give either the edge?

The first difference between Mallett and Hoyer that jumps out is arm strength, with the advantage to Ryan Mallett. It is not even close, but one thing that Brian Hoyer showed is that he has some advantage over Mallett on his touch on passes deeper that 15+ yards. Mallett can get the football to his targets in a hurry but he is still working the touch needed to fit the ball over defenders in tight spaces. Hoyer showed better touch on his deep passes, especially on two passes to Keith Mumphery and Chandler Worthy. Hoyer did struggle with accuracy in day one, which was one of the knocks on him coming from the Cleveland Browns, but expect O’Brien to be a man of his word on a quarterback competition for training camp.

@SOTTexans What do you see them doing with Cliett? Is it all negative with Jaelen Strong?

JDYTLRZSSNFOBFF.20111125211147.jpg

Reshard Cliett, '13
Reshard Cliett will begin his stint with the Texans as an inside linebacker and the defense is trying to get faster from the inside out. Talking to some around the organization, Cliett was an early target for the Texans after they saw him workout at South Florida’s pro-day. Not only his speed and strength, but also his football I.Q. impressed the Texans, including how he understands offensive schemes and his recall on information given to him. Don’t fall into the “he was a 6th round selection” thinking; the Texans are counting on Cliett to be a key special teams player in 2015 and he has an outside shot of being a sub package player in year one.

As for Strong, I think rookie conditioning is a league wide issue and he has improved since rookie mini-camp. You can tell he has lost some weight since he arrived to Houston almost three weeks ago, but his struggles are common for rookies. He has caught the ball well and is still learning what the offense is about. It is way too early to be too critical of him as a player, but his best play will come when he catches up physically to produce on the field.

No way was it a Lisfranc that held him back. Even if it were the type of Lisfranc that could be attempted to be conservatively rehabbed without surgery, he would have been made to stay off the field for an extended period of time.......which didn't happen.

If he were dealing with an injury that supposedly "held him back," it was more likely his shoulder.

You're consistent in your disdain for all things McNair. You reckon he thinks losing is the best way to make money and all his talk is lies? Should he give seats away and overpay all his players to make sure things wind up in the red? I'm sure you do business that way. Or would you just be happy if your seats were free and nothing else matters?

I looked, but couldn't find your Kudos for him turning down Hard Knocks in years past.

From the Detroit Free Press:

As Brian Hoyer settles into his battle with Ryan Mallett for the Houston Texans' starting quarterback job — a Michigan State-Michigan showdown, though Mallett spent most of his career at Arkansas — he has some familiar targets around to help.

Keshawn Martin was a freshman at MSU when Hoyer was a senior in 2008. And though Hoyer and Keith Mumphery didn't cross paths in East Lansing — Mumphery arrived in 2010 — Hoyer told reporters that he was impressed by Mumphery in OTAs this week.

Hoyer wasn't alone. ESPN reporter Tania Ganguli tweeted that Mumphery, a fifth-round pick of the Texans, "stood out" among rookies. John Harris concurred in a piece on the Texans' official website.

"The day rookie WR Keith Mumphery was drafted, I noted how good he'd be for the special teams units but if he's not careful he's going to inject himself right into the WR competition," Harris wrote. "That guy caught a ton of passes throughout the day and even got some kudos from Brian Hoyer during the QB's media session after the OTA. He's a rookie. He's not perfect. He dropped a pass or two. But, that guy is making a big impression right away with the staff and veterans."

Hoyer, meanwhile, began with the first team Wednesday. He and Mallett then split reps, and Hoyer told the Houston Chronicle that he won't be fazed by another competition — he beat out rookie Johnny Manziel to start for the Cleveland Browns last season.

"I've been through it before," Hoyer said. "I'm not going to let it affect me and I'll just be myself and really focus on the things that I can control."

Linebacker Max Bullough and rookie safety Kurtis Drummond make for five former Spartans on the Texans' roster.

And that's supposed to impress us?

From the Detroit Free Press:

And that's supposed to impress us?

It's nice to hear about Mumphrey again. If we can get serious production out of him & Cliette, this draft may end up being better than we expect (& most of us are expecting quite a bit from this draft; KJohnson, McKinney, & Strong).

Mumphrey is, supposedly, an excellent blocker. If he shows himself to be competent in the slot catching the ball then his blocking will be a valuable asset for the run game... something we haven't had since Kevin Walter.

And something that destroyed us in the last game vs. Indy when Posey couldn't get on his block for Arian Foster's TD.

1 billion $$$$ and he isn't doing everything possible to put the best product on the field.

You bet if my customers gave me a billion $$$$$ I would do everything possible to give them whatever they wanted.

Don't count me in "most of us" cause not expecting much in returns from this draft class. Last years should at least show up, takes a year for them to learn & adjust.
