He's not slow, but I think people were hoping for DeSean Jackson or Mike Wallace type speed.

I don't think he's slow, but many (me included) wanted a true burner

Well, they passed on guys like that in the 1st to take a CB. But, I'll say this: If K. Johnson is on Strong in camp, Strong will come up with the catch.

I don't know if was Kevin Johnson who was covering him, but Kelvin Benjamin was shutdown his last game vs Wake Forrest

That's the bottom line isn't it?

I am so freaking stoked about this. This is the first draft I've truly gotten behind in a long time. Who cares about the rest of the picks, not like we ever hit back there anyway. We have enough Special teams guys which is all those late rounders ever are.

Speed is awesome, but when you have QBs that aren't the most accurate then guys that can snag the ball in traffic are where it's at. We have leapers now, and I like that way more. When you have a QB like ARod, you want scorchers and route runners cause he's gonna hit that spot they are supposed to be with precision and guys like Strong may cause quite a few picks, but we don't have a QB like ARod, we have (likely) Ryan Mallet as our starter, and for that I'd much prefer a guy that can snag the ball out of the air at it's highest point.

Looks like he fared well vs Marcus Peters. Got off the line decently and had good position on alot of balls. Would have had a ton more catches if his QB could have thrown in his zip code.

Peters was a dumbass taunting him then gets scored on the following play. LOL

I'm a believer in having contrasting types of WR's, tell me3 that Strong will be a better version of Nuk. They are the same guys.

Hopefully BOB knows best.

I just can't stop laughing about this pick. There are people here on this very message board that would have been totally fine with taking him at 16.

True

Not me

He is a good pick at this point in the draft. Strong is a good WR, not a difference maker and has concussion issue.

you don't like the pick in the 3rd?

I didn't know about this. I wonder if this is why he fell to the 3rd, along with concerns over the wrist injury.

Could it be that this is our first drafted player who had conduct character concerns coming into the draft? That was the word on the street.

Isn't this the same situation as last years 3rd? We were all giddy about a 1st round talent that dropped. Hope this version actually gets through a practice.

Sesame Street. Word is that he stole some cookies and there's a certain monster who's pissed.

I'm....kind of in shock that Strong was available and that the FO moved to get him. Great pick.

You know what makes this pick even that much better? Dumping Posey.

Dumping Posey and Martin would be even better.

Wonder if they could trade trade Martin for a bag of chips.

Strong is obviously a tremendous value in the third round notwithstanding the concerns about his wrist, but we should still brace ourselves for the onslaught of criticism/negatives from C&D and Mr Sunshine because one or both them will predict Strong going IR before we get out of September.
Long-striders do appear to be playing under their recorded speed, but running in the 4.4s at the Indy combine is respectable so he's not at all slow, but neither is he a burner. So we didn't get a Dorsett or a Devin Smith, but as a WR he certainly has assets that they don't possess.

In God'ell's NFL Strong's concussion issues don't bother you?

Strong suffered a wrist fracture similar to Cushing. In Cushing's case, the bone was fractured through and through. He continued to play with it for a long time without immobilization. Therefore the two separated pieces would not heal (non union) and at that late point in time, conservative immobilization in a cast would not have lead to healing.........therefore surgery was performed.

Strong also sustained a fracture of the navicular (also called the scaphoid) wrist bone. But this was a "stress" fracture, where the two pieces of bone did not actually separate and move. Strong was fortunate in that he played with this fracture since November 1 of last year and did not extend the injury to physical separation of the two pieces. Therefore, the wrist could be immobilized after the season for anywhere from 3-5 months depending on x-ray or other imaging findings. As long as he was not having pain, and was fully immobilized, he could have played with a cast on during this period of time.....but, of course, this would not very practical for a WR.

All in all, from the information that I have been able to garner, his wrist should not be an issue from this injury.

Didn't see that coming. Was sure that Strong would need wrist replacement surgery. :)

Agreed, I expected the fracture in his wrist to have lead to a degenerative spinal issue that would leave him paralyzed if he ever stepped on an uneven pallet of grass.

I don't know if this has already been posted, but this one-handed catch that grabbed national attention is reminiscent of AJ in his earlier years.

So I guess the Texans are still looking for a slot WR/returner?

One of these days Doc is going to start charging fair rates for his accurate diagnoses. THEN you'll be sorry.

Speed issue concerns, route running concerns, i think.

CONCENTRATION is not a hopeless problem. It can be taught unlike height, reach and potential for speed. But he compliments McKinney since we've added a faster than quick to his quicker than fast.

Best thing I see about him is his catching. Which isn't bad for a wr.

Needs work on route running pretty badly.

But his catching/ball location looks like it could be a great, great asset. Doesn't need a lot of space to make catches and can make catches from a bunch of different angles and he snaps to the ball. If he becomes a good route runner I think you have yourself a solid to really wr. Throw in a great qb and improved route running and he could be really good to great.

As is he looks like he can contribute though because he looks like the type to win most 50-50 balls. Good positioning, timing and hands when the ball is in the air.

Job 1 for any receiver is to CATCH THE BALL. We have a couple that find a way to do that, even if it's not always pretty.

Speed is great IF you catch the ball, but after fifty years, I can still remember my frustration with an Olympian who had trouble catching the ball after getting wide open.

ps I am hoping one of our supplemental pick will be used for a fast, but risky burner like Jamarcus Nelson we can use in multiple receiver sets. As long as he can CATCH THE BALL! We can use play design to keep him from getting crunched at the LOS. Perhaps use him from a slot position where he starts in space. I seem to recall one of the FA pickups could fill that role, but I might be wrong.

Also the big danger with a scaphoid fracture is avascular necrosis of the scaphoid. He has neither (necrosis or nonunion). So it's now a non-issue as it doesn't really create any long term issues unless he had one or both of these complications.
