Vince Wilfork to Houston - **signed**

http://nesn.com/2015/03/report-vince-wilfork-drawing-interest-from-houston-texans-in-free-agency/

Vince Wilfork immediately became a hot commodity when he hit free agency Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET. The Houston Texans are “making an effort to sign” the big nose tackle, ESPN.com’s Tania Ganguli reported Tuesday. The Patriots declined to pick up Wilfork’s $8 million option before the league year officially began Tuesday. The Texans are chock full of Patriots connections. Romeo Crennel is the Texans’ defensive coordinator, former offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien is Houston’s head coach and Mike Vrabel is linebackers coach. Former Tom Brady backups Ryan Mallett and Brian Hoyer will vie for the Texans’ starting quarterback job. The Texans play a 3-4 defense, and Wilfork would fit perfectly playing next to end J.J. Watt.
Pardon for quoting the entire article but it is short and sweet. Im surprised this slipped through the cracks.

I think putting Wilfork in the middle of that D would be very, very interesting.

I looked for the thread in this forum and the NFL board, didnt see it. If its already posted, as I was surprised the news came out 12 hours ago, please delete thread.
Doesn't mean anything to me, not saying you should have, or shouldn't have, but there's a FA thread in the NFL forum & a Texans FA thread in the Texans section.

Suggestion for how the competition between Wilfork and
Pickett should go:

1) They both put on a mawashi
2) They face off on the Texans logo at midfield
3) Feet are stomped, bows are made
4) First one to push the other out of the logo gets the start..

MSR. Best thing about this suggestion is that the Texans could schedule it early that morning and sell a limited number of tickets to it. Maybe even televise it.

My only question is how much is left in the tank?

And what becomes of Pickett who I had the same question about last year but actually impressed the hell out of me.

And what about our ND spring chicken of a prospect who did squat last year but we have high hopes for?

Wait, that's three questions. Sorry, that's aggie math.

Unless it is an elite QB, I do not want someone else's old vet with a little gas left in the tank. You end up paying for what they did previously in their careers instead of paying for what you get next season.

We've learned this lesson as Texans fans. Now they just have to apply it. :howdy:

I'm not sure if that's the case here though. Wilfork is worth a look. He's 33 and we've seen Picket at 35 play well enough for some to be interested in having him back in a backup role at least. I think if Wilfork really wants to play and has any fire left in his belly then RAC will pick up on it. He plays one of the relatively few positions where a big, old, strong guy can hang on for quite a while.

I don't think he's going to be Ed Reed. Personally I think he signs with the Patriots again for less money to stay where he's been happy but if he was seriously interested in a 2 year deal I'd want to see if we can make that happen. That's just about long enough to get Nix completely figured out. By the time Wilfork is truly done we'll have a player in place if things go our way.

Big, fat defensive tackles can have long shelf lives. Hell, Sam Adams played for an eternity. Staying big obvious doesn't become harder with age, and strength doesn't fade like agility and speed does.

Wilfork played 766 snaps to Pickett's 290, put into the Defensive End category by ProFootballFocus he rated 14th/47 3-4 DEs at +10.4.

If his heart is in it, he can still play and made some terrific plays in the playoffs. Money, I think, will be an issue.

And how can you not want this???: http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-network-total-access/0ap2000000353762/BBQ-and-dancing-courtesy-of-Vince-Wilfork

Don't get me wrong, I initially love the idea of Wilfork in a Texans uni next to J.J. Watt. It definitely has a lot of appeal.

However, this is the Houston Texans we're talking about. They would probably overpay for a guy that ends up injured in training camp. My gut tells me that the only reason he'd sign with the Texans is financial incentive, which means they most likely have to overpay.

I will always think of Wilfork as a Patriot and I'm sure he will always think of himself as a Patriot but the guy fits here even if he doesn't know it yet.

You see the joy in that man as he cooks those ribs? I think he'd come down here and realize that he had found another place he could fit into perfectly. The phrase "Brother from another mother" comes to mind where Vince, the Patriots, and the Texans are concerned.

Vince Wilfork clearly loves him some BBQ. Houston Texas loves BBQ. He'd love it here.

And the football fits too. That goes without saying.

Excessive cynicism can get you in a self-fulfilling cycle.

Per @rapsheet, Vince Wilfork is considering 4 teams, including Patriots. #Texans want him.

This new regime doesnt seem to be overpaying. Quite the contrary.

Clowney/Crick/Wilfork/Watt would be fun to watch. Healthy bodies like Pickett,Louis Nix, Jerrel Powe and Tim Jamison make it a deep line too.

I just believe in building through the draft instead of taking a chance on spending too much money on old vets.

Perhaps that's cynicism, but it is also a perspective based on years of experience.

The consistently great teams in the league build through drafts. They will occasionally pick up an older vet to fill a needed spot, but the Texans are not one of those teams right now. They need holes filled in multiple places and they certainly need bench depth across the board.

Paying Vince what he commands means they cannot fill some of those other needs. It's just a matter of prioritizing things, not any sort of "excessive cynicism".

Does Wilfork make us that much better that puts us over the hump as compared to stocking up on urgently needed LB corps? I do not think so.

I'd sign him but I don't see why the Pats let him walk and really do not see why Revis left after winning a title.

The excessive cynicism was in projecting injuries ala Green and Reed onto future potential players.

As herv said, the consistently good teams do both. NE is always making free agency moves from small to huge.

Of course the draft has to be the mainstay. But it would be exactly like NE to catch an aging still performing vet who has been cut from his big contract to a short term deal. They're looking at Reggie Bush right now.

As long as nobody tells him about Larry's BBQ Buffet I'm cool with it..

(I'd have performance anxiety if he walked in while I was enjoying
my all-you-can eat beef ribs..)

Any excessive cynicism that I possess has absolutely no influence of FO decisions or what happens on the field. It is merely a personal perspective. If I had any sort of karmic or cosmic influence on the team, I'd be a cheer-leading koolaid drinker leading the charge.

That said, it is logical that older players tend to have more injuries and not be as good as they were in their prime. That's not really an enlightening statement.

And it is NFL history that these players often get paid big contracts based on past performance and not necessarily on what they accomplish next season.

I'm not saying Wilfork is any of the above, but rather the Texans FO needs to be careful about falling in love with a guy that has 11 seasons on his body.

He has his ring, now he's going to want to get paid. How much motivation does he have compared to someone younger and still hungry for success? I cannot answer any of these questions, but they should still be asked.

They certainly do both, but they have a stable of solid players through the draft process.

The Texans do not have that luxury. Their drafts are hit or miss.

And while they sign vets, they often use them for one year and let them go. That is not the way the Texans have done business in the past. Maybe that change with O'Brien, but we will not know until hindsight.

Of course the draft has to be the mainstay. But it would be exactly like NE to catch an aging still performing vet who has been cut from his big contract to a short term deal. They're looking at Reggie Bush right now.
NE does not have the holes the Texans have, and they have depth that the Texans do not have right now.

Comparing the Texans to the Patriots at this moment in time is like comparing a VW Jetta to a Lamborghini Huracán. They are both cars, but one consistently wins races while the other is just trying to qualify for the preliminary race. JMO.

Very mediocre BBQ but hey, it's a buffet.

NE does not have the holes the Texans have, and they have depth that the Texans do not have right now.

Ummm, yeah they do and they did last year too. Revis and Browner were brought in last year and now they're gone. Vereen gone. They have the exact same hole at NT and still want Wilfork, just cheaper than his contract was.

What separates them is not some vastly different talent level at 52 spots on the roster. It's in 1 (plus in people who never walk on the field).

WORST "BBQ" I've ever had the misfortune of tasting. It's truly terrible.
You must have been on the only bad day..

If you look under BBQ aficionado in the encyclopedia, you will
see my photo there.

I drive all over Texas and out of state for BBQ. There practically isn't
any place in the Houston area I haven't been to.

5 hour road trips to Salt Lick in Driftwood, and City Market in Luling, etc..

Larry's on sat/sun around 4:30p is definitely Top-25 in the state..
(and one of the best bangs-for-the-buck in H-town)

Their best items:
Chopped beef, Pork ribs, Pork Sausage, Beef ribs, Slaw. They have
other decent sides like fried shrimp, fried fish, etc..

I don't mess with the sides as much, because when I go there it is for
meat.

That's absolutely preposterous saying that this garbage BBQ buffet restaurant is top-25 BBQ restaurant in Texas, good god.

Anyway, back to Wilfork. This franchise has proven they are incapable of finding a decent DT in the draft so I'd happily overpay for an older one just so we actually have a freaking DT since Seth Payne.
