O'Brien likes Petty over both Mariotta and Winston?

Does Bill O'Brien prefer Bryce Petty over the rest of the quarterback prospects? One former NFL scout says O'Brien does.

Landry was a scout for the Cleveland Browns and Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans, and consulted for up to 10 NFL teams on one point. Now he runs his own independent site covering draft prospects, which leads us to the current topic. Also, Landry is a frequent visitor of the NFL combine, as he was this year.

Landry, on 620 WDAE (Tampa,) discussed the Jameis Winston vs. Marcus Mariota debate in the draft and tagged specific team personnel to each quarterback. While running down which organizations liked each quarterback, Landry mentioned Houston Texans’ coach Bill O’Brien preferring Mariota. Then Landry added the tidbit that O'Brien liked Baylor’s Bryce Petty the most. You can hear the rundown at the 36 minute mark.

When the players become Texans or are about to become Texans, they go into the Texans forum. Otherwise, they belong in their appropriate forum, in this case the draft forum. It's been this way for a very long time. Like, since the beginning.

I don't have a problem with this having it's own thread, in the "TexansTalk" section. It probably should, this should spark the talk... are we targeting a QB in this draft?

I know. I was just making a point about distinctions without a difference. But I would much rather get Mallett and pick up a QB like Petty in the 4th than waste 16 on QB.

It has been fun playing with First-pick and seeing how many 2nds you can pick up by trading down in the first round and still getting either White or Parker.

I've picked up as many as 9.

I wish I had copied that draft and saved it.

And each time Bryce was still there in the third, though usually gone by 4-19.
 
I agree about the streamlining. All the bitching about streamlining should go in its own place - the bit bucket. Add this post to it. And everyone else, quitcha bitchin'.

The same mentality that says MVP has to be a QB will ensure someone takes Petty in the first. Couple that with the fact that first rounders no longer break the bank and the argument to delay until the second round gets weaker. I don't think he should be taken in the first, but I think he will.

Yeah... funny stuff.

Like all the Texans/Bortles connection crap.

College coaches pick the players they pick because that's generally what's available in their talent market. When Mariota gets to the NFL, he's going to be joining a bunch of guys as talented if not more. Chip Kelly probably won't think about him any more than Pete Carroll was drooling to get Matt Lienart in Seattle.

In this instance this is about the Texans H/C, not the player.

So is it a black zebra with white stripes or a white zebra with black stripes?
 
There's a ton to like about Petty. Intermediate accuracy is not in that group. And that's pretty important.

Perhaps that could be developed. But he's a project who's floor and ceiling is no higher than Savage's, IMO. What's the point?

Some guys you can look at & you can tell they got it. Peyton Manning, Phillip Rivers, Matthew Stafford, Matt Ryan... & they deliver.

Most of the time, you have no idea you're looking at a champion... Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Russell Wilson.

Finding the right QB is sometimes like throwing a dart to pick a winning stock. Your chances of actually picking a winner goes up exponentially the more darts you throw.

Ryan Mallett is a long shot. Tom Savage is a long shot.

Fitzpatrick, the odds are even longer. You'd figure if he was going to do something he'd have done it by now.

Case... I think he's a long shot in the vein of Mallett & Savage, but I'd understand if OB is ready to move on. In that case, I'd love to throw another dart...... Hundley, Petty, Grayson.....
 
I think this is "muchtodo" about nothing. A little side comment about him talking to coaches and gm's. I don't think there is any interest in Petty at all from OB.

I could be wrong, but I just don't see it.

UM, no it's about the Texans HC ranking draft prospects. There is a thread regarding what type of QB O'Brien likes in the Texans forum. This is specifically about what order the Texans HC supposedly ranks the QBs in this draft.
