The Cost Of James Casey*UPDATE* Cut by Eagles

I'm kind of surprised he didn't work out with Chip Kelly's offense. It seems structured for a guy like Casey who's a jack of all trades.

Yeah, I kind of felt that Kubiak underused him, but attributed that to Kubiak's overall uncreative thinking. I expected him to thrive in Philly.

Well, we certainly need an overhaul at the TE position, so, I guess it wouldn't hurt to consider him. Maybe O'Brien can use him better?

I think it is safe to say that Casey was just never going to be that potential bad ass a lot of us thought he might have the potential to be. He just never did it on two teams now and he has been in the league for at least 6 or 7 years or so. Good luck to the guy. Doubtful that he ends up here, but I hope he maintains a career in the NFL.

Casey is the classic jack of all trades, master of none. He's not quite good enough to start at any position.

I wouldn't mind him back here, but he is not the answer at TE

Since the day O'Brien came in talking about needing his players to have versatility, I've suspected that Casey would come back one day. He seems like a real O'Brien type of player to me.

Wonder if they could try to put him in the slot.........he's tough, not afraid of contact, has good hands, can run good routes and has always been a very valuable special teams asset.

I think he'd do better than D. Johnson

J J Watt is a part time FB who's much better.

Casey snaps played...

173 in 2014
168 in 2013

It appears he was paid $8 million for those, or $23,460.00 per snap.

One of the more bizarre contracts at the time.

(In 2014 JJ Watt was paid $10,203.00 per snap)

James Casey will forever be known for "the drop" to me. If he catches that ball against New England on the opening drive I think that game goes much differently.

I would like to see Casey finish out with the Texans. He is an older player because he played baseball before coming to the NFL, but I think he could still be a serviceable TE/FB and help out on ST.

Yup. Agree with all. He was in a wide open offense in Philly and a more conservative offense here and didn't make a big impact in either. Maybe we fans overestimated his talents.

Maybe he gets one more shot up in Denver.

Not really trying to defend Casey, but with Texans, they couldn't ever figure out how to use him. He was not a full time fullback, though they tried to make him one. His receiver skills were obvious, but he was never really utilized as such, concentrating on receivers on the team that had questionable consistent skills for that position. When he was picked up by the Eagles, he was instantly placed in a compromised situation in that they had a well-established starter, and the Eagles immediately after Casey's acquisition, took a TE at the very top of the 2nd round of the Draft who they did not want to waste by not immediately grooming into a starting position.

Hope Casey does get a more fair chance somewhere to break into the lineup.

I appreciated the excitement around here when the Texans first picked up James Casey. Hearing about his versatility, I was expecting to see a mismatch nightmare... but that never happened.

Watching him play, it just didn't seem like he had what it takes to be that kind of weapon in the NFL.. & seven years later, I doubt it's ever going to happen. He doesn't have the size, speed, quickness combos that make guys like Graham, Thomas, Gronk, or Davis the weapons they are & he doesn't have the "snap" that makes a guy like OD productive.

Slightly different spin on the same thing - he wasn't all that underutilized in Houston by the end. He was targeted 45 times in 2012 making him in essence the #2 TE from the FB position. AJ was having an epic year. The 3rd and 4th WRs had 28 and 14 targets. There are only so many targets to go around.

With the Eagles, it frankly looks like a GM v. HC dispute - GM brought him in and the HC refused to play him. 9 targets in 2 years? - that wasn't even giving him a chance. Now the HC has won.

But it was hard not to get both hyped and mystified based on 2011. 5 for 126 against NO and 7 for 91 against TN and essentially off the rest of the season.

Does he make our TE position better? If the answer is yes then you try and get him. I think the answer is yes. What has Griffin done? Also, CJ's rookie season wasn't anything to write home about (not giving up on him but we also don't know if we already got everything we saw already.)

Casey puts TE down on the need position for the draft but I also still believe that a franchise TE is in this draft. Everyone is on Max Williams sack so the next best guy I think will be available is Ben Koyack from Notre Dame.

Denver?

Again? Damn, rough week for James. lol

Just messin. It was mentioned a page or two back

I think he was suggesting, subtly, that the title of the thread be changed from "The Cost of James Casey*UPDATE*Signed by Eagles" to "The Cost of James Case*UPDATE*Cut by Eagles".

HTH.
