Cushing

Wonder if his contract has offset salary language or not.
only his agent and Smith know but we do know he did not get all his past seasons money due to missing some games according to another poster (not sure what thread) but that is probably a drop in bucket.

He's obviously going to be on the roster this year. Doesn't mean you can't bring someone else in.

I'm sure people will be beating his door down for 5 tackles a game from an ILB with bad wheels.

This is the year he either shits or gets off the pot. Might as well bring in a young guy to learn from him.
You do realize that 5 Ts per game is 90 right? Their are many teams including us that would grab that guy bad wheels or not. lol

Idk where your math is coming from. Is he playing 2 extra games somewhere?

5 x 18 = 90
5 x 16 = 80
5 x 15 = 75
5 x 14 = 70

He played in 15 games last year and had 72 tackles (31 assisted aka he fell on the pile). A little over 5 tackles a game for an ILB isn't good. After two 8 tackle games in weeks 3 and 4, he stunk.

Mike Mohamad had 68 tackles last year and he makes $570,000; rookie contract, I'm aware. Still speaks to productivity. . So yeah I stand firm that Cushing and 5 tackles a game wouldn't have people beating down his door.

That was me who said that. His original signing bonus was $9 million, but $1,012,500 has been recouped through insurance.

Well thinking someone can predict this kind of injury is right up there as well.
Yes it would be dumb to think you could predict this kind of injury, but with Cush's history it was easy to know there would be some kind of serious injury. Anyone who denied that would be almost as stupid as the front office was.

When someone uses the words "as well" to their comments, it means... "in addition to" or "I agree with what you're saying, & I'll add..."

I'll add.. after looking at how bad of a technique Cushing had, and how he was all balls no technique.. I'm not sure I would have signed him that year. He basically blitzed the QB didn't get his hand on the blocker and totally get lit up.. Great job not..

You have the order of injuries wrong. His knee was injured against the Jets, he signed his new contract and then was injured against KC.

Dirtiest **** ever. **** Matt Slauson and **** Jamaal Charles.

Ruined a potential HOF career, in my opinion. One of the saddest situations. Guy was on his way to greatness. Was and still is the heart and soul of this team. Leader on and off the field. Absolute animal.

Now....he's just......there.

*dreams of prime Watt and prime Cushing*

*sigh*

Those two are the reason I never, ever, ever want any one of my sports teams to draft anyone with even a shred of motor or work ethic concerns.

Cushing himself said it went dirty. Looking at the replay it still doesn't look dirty to me. The year before behind the leg, that was a dirty block.

Wishing @briancushing56 a speedy recovery. Hate to see anyone get injured on the football field.

He's just being polite. What else is he going to say? Dude dove straight at his knees.

protect yourself at all times, it wasn't dirty at all.. he exploded into his leg like they teach you to block someone. Cushing ran in there all steroided up and thought Jamal Charles was a punk.. he got lit up.

I know it's legal and all, but I can see where TheMatrix31 is coming from. It's a biatch move block, IMO, because Charles didn't just man up and block him high. He had plenty of opportunity to line up and straight up block Cushing with his hands, but chose to go low instead.

And yeah, I know our own team uses these cut blocks, but I don't have to like it.

Look at how much room Charles had to just stand up and block like a man. He went low instead. He's a *****. A dirty little *****.

Watching it several times, it looks like that is what Cushing thought as well. It looks like Cushing thinks Charles is gonna block him up high. Cushing is way late to react to Charles diving at his knees.

Geez lots of over-reaction.

No they do not teach to go straight for the kneecap and that wasn't necessary although it was legal.

And no Charles didn't "explode" into anything either. He went to his knees which is the opposite.

Steroided up. Yeah, ok.

Looks to me like Cushing just guessed wrong (instinctually) - was planning on jumping Charles but Charles lunged forward closing the distance into the take-off leg.

Ugly play that neither player particularly did well in.

And that slow motion replay doesn't do justice to the speed it all happened. Cushing attacked the hole on a delayed blitz, and Charles crossed over from the other side of the pocket to meet him, iirc

U gotta play smart it looked like Charles was going down 6 yards before cush even got there cush has got 2 see him and just jump over him

I get what everyone is saying, but I do not recall Arian Foster, well known for his ability to pick up the blitz, going for the knees. He straight up blocks guys like a lineman.

Charles appears to immediately go to the ground after the snap and almost looked like he lunged.

Again, I'm not accusing Charles of being dirty or illegal, just pointing out his choice to go low instead of lining up and truly blocking Cushing.

But, it is what it is, and we can't change the past. Just hope the Cush comes back strong in '15, because this defense could really use him full strength.

16 x 5 = 90 ?
You will not believe this but when I typed that I kept saying that does not sound right. I think what I did was mentally say 5x6 =30 and add the 3 to the 6 and that makes 90. lol That will definitely not be my worst moment of 2015.

Just joking.

I need to take typing lessons. LOL

Ain't no way Charles wanted to take on Cushing stand up

The film clips make it appear that Charles was trying to throw a cross-body block (which was legal when I played). He seems to be trying to dive in front of Cushing so Cush's thighs would run into his body. Does not look like an attempt to injure.

Per ESPN:
Jamaal Charles 199lbs
Foster is listed 227lbs

Charles would be stupid to block a blitzing 249lb LB heads up. He's not a lineman. He did his job.

Yup.

When I saw it during the game and again here, it seems Charles did not want to block Cushing straight up and dove at Cushing's knees. He did not appear to be doing a rolling body block but intended to injure. I am a big Charles fan and even mocked him to Texans but I still don't like it.

This! Anyone who is suggesting Charles isn't "manning up" by taking on a LB with a 50 to 60 pound weight advantage is being ridiculous. There was nothing illegal about that block. If there is anyone to blame for the injury it's Cushing. Piss poor technique on his part is the reason he got hurt.

Y'all are going go scream bloody murder when some itty bitty man takes out J.J. with the same legal block.

Hey, it's all good, right? It will be legal and nobody can be expected to actually block J.J., so of course they are going to go for his knees.....errrr......block low. (Forgive me, it's such a fine line between the two ;))

I think they should ban this kind of blocking technique, but they won't because it would favor defense. God forbid if this league does anything to protect defenders these days.

Like I said, I do not think Charles intended to hurt Cushing or did anything dirty or illegal. But if you think going to the ground to block someone low is "manning up", we'll just have to agree to disagree about it. It's a chump block to me, regardless of who does it.

You don't think it happens multiple times a drive? Why do you think he stops and tries to knock down the pass once he realizes he won't make it to the QB?

:turtle:

I would have no problem with the NFL banning this type of block.

No one said going low is manning up. It's called being intelligent. When there is someone that much bigger coming full speed at you, what are you supposed to do? You're not going to meet them head on. Not unless you want to end up on IR. that's not manning up as some suggested. That's just ridiculous

Some of y'all are way overplaying the size difference. There are small RBs who block standing up all the time. The bigger RBs take on 50-75 lb weight differentials as well. You see it every weekend JJ plays and not every RB dives at his knees.

But Charles in particular has a horrific "tackling/blocking" technique of going to his knees and then lunging. There is nothing textbook about it as suggested up thread.

Here's Charles displaying it again along with not being scared to hit a LB both in one play on AJ Hawk - Link

Ryan Fitzpatrick, QB, had no problem in blocking a 6'5" 240 DE (Manny Lawson):

QB Fitzpatrick with a big block

"Fitzpatrick would be stupid to block a blitzing 240lb DE heads up. He's not a lineman. He did his job."

'cept, you know, the QB blocked him high.

I can't believe we're still talking about that block.

It must be the offseason already...
