Ranking the head coach hires
by Mike Sando

1. Denver Broncos: Gary Kubiak

Four of the six hires were head coaches previously, including Kubiak (the other two have been interim head coaches). There will be no on-the-job training, which can be a plus. Kubiak brings to Denver a clear vision on offense. His system has proven to get positive results even without a top quarterback. That is reason for optimism as the team transitions away from Peyton Manning at some point in the next couple of seasons. While Matt Schaub and Joe Flacco were at their best in Kubiak's offense (when he was the Texans' head coach and the Ravens' offensive coordinator, respectively), previously unheralded runners such as Arian Foster (undrafted) and Justin Forsett (seventh-round pick) also flourished.

Off the field, Kubiak appears to be a good fit with general manager John Elway. The two worked well together as teammates and in the coach-player role previously. The coach-GM dynamic is critical, and while there are no guarantees Elway and Kubiak will get along well in this arrangement, the odds appear in their favor. Kubiak also comes to Denver fully versed in the history of the organization, making him a natural fit.

2. Chicago Bears: John Fox
He will need better talent on defense, of course, but restoring balance to the offense could help the Bears play a more complementary game. Fox fashions himself as coach of the whole team, not just the defense.

He has a capable staff in place. Coordinators Vic Fangio (defense) and Adam Gase (offense) would have been legitimate head coaching candidates. Secondary coach Ed Donatell has been a coordinator. The combination of Fox and those heavy-hitting assistants made the Bears a strong candidate for the top spot.

3. Buffalo Bills: Rex Ryan
Still, I recently heard a coach marvel at Ryan's ability to land the Buffalo job after the Bills outscored Ryan's Jets 81-26 last season. Football can be a crazy business, for sure. Ryan's familiarity with the AFC East landscape should be a plus. However, his Jets had a winning record inside the division just once. They were 15-21 in division games overall, including 6-12 the past three seasons.

4. New York Jets: Todd Bowles
The Jets have paired a first-time head coach with a first-time GM in the NFL's roughest media market, without the benefit of a viable quarterback. There are uncertainties. "Bowles is a great, great guy and a really good coordinator, but he is soft-spoken and you wonder if he will be able to drop the hammer when needed -- something you have to do or the players will run over you," a GM from another team said. I have heard others describe Bowles as difficult to read.

5. Oakland Raiders: Jack Del Rio
This could be the toughest job in the league even though Derek Carr appeals as a young quarterback. GM Reggie McKenzie is on the hot seat, the stadium situation is abysmal, the owner is unproven and the roster features too many aging veterans. Del Rio could do the best possible job and still fail.

6. San Francisco 49ers: Jim Tomsula
The move to hire Tomsula also reflected the organization's belief that a change could benefit relations with some players, including tight end Vernon Davis. Still, flushing out Harbaugh and high-profile assistants such as Fangio would have been easier to accept from the outside if there were more apparent evidence Tomsula was ready to fill the void. Tomsula has been an interim coach in the NFL and a head coach in NFL Europe, but anyone looking for reassurance from his introductory news conference found the opposite; it was difficult to watch.

• A word about Quinn: I would have placed Quinn and the Falcons in the third or fourth spot above if the hiring were official.

No love for our shiny, new O-line coach?

Tennessee GM Ruston Webster's statement -- "This was not an easy decision" -- indicates that Dawson's departure was the team's call.

Titans announce they've parted ways with respected VP [of Player Personnel] Lake Dawson, who has interviewed for a number of GM jobs the last few years.

Dick LeBeau will be in charge of the defense with the #Titans. Ray Horton will remain DC with team. Announcement expected later in week

So the Titans just hired LeBeau above DC Ray Horton. WTF???

Dick Lebeau is one of the greatest defensive minds in the business, to learn from him would be a very unique oppurtunity, hopefully Horton will not see it that way and fight it so that their defense will suck.
Horton played under LeBeau for 6 seasons. He coached under LeBeau for 12. If Horton hasn't learned from LeBeau yet, I don't think it will ever happen.

It's weird, that's all I'm gonna say. They'll both be better defensive coaches if the Titans pass on a QB and select Leonard Williams. Because if they don't get better players, their defense will definitely suck.

The Big Apple loves Mike Maccagnan...

Mike Maccagnan fired a bold opening salvo to jolt the NFL landscape days before the start of free agency. Rather than plod along with a disjointed plan like his predecessor, the rookie general manager pulled off a pair of savvy moves Friday that should let everyone in on a secret: The Jets aren’t messing around anymore.

Yeah... we let the right guy go alright. He was probably on Rick's last nerve talking about bold moves, blockbuster trades, & aggresive offseason moves.
