I sure hope that Petty goes to a situation where he can sit for a year or two and not be asked to save a franchise right off the bat
I originally asked the question because PayPal said he wasn't impressed with Petty's throws to wide open receivers. Does the fact that he understands the system enough to know where the open guy "should" be & the ability to get the ball to him (some of which were very nice throws, that last bomb under pressure)... aren't those types of things any NFL coach would be looking for?
I do as well. I like him. He really does seem like a great kid. I would be totally comfortable taking him in the 3rd or 4th and letting him sit if we hadn't just done that with Savage last year.

We got a game now!!
Baylor kicker was just LEVELED on that run back. Ouch.
Of course. But the system is so simple that he shouldn't get brownie points for understanding it. I would be more inclined to give him a negative if he wasn't capable of operating it the way that he does.
Petty really struggles throwing any route that isn't a vertical or screen. So the system maximizes those throws for him. But no NFL system is going to be able to replicate that. It's too simple and defenses will take that away and force him to throw everything else, and he really struggles doing that.
How many times does that happen in the Pros? The guy that should be open is? It looks to me that it's all predetermined throws. I see lots of quick throws to uncovered guys. That's rare, unless you're playing against the Texans secondary, in the NFL. I've seen Cook look right, middle, and hit the guy on the left. He may not have set a record here but he's going through his reads. I'm not saying Petty hasn't made some nice throws. I'm saying it's rare when a guy is 5 yards open down the field at the next level. Those are the easy throws all QBs should make.
This really has nothing to do with Petty from my POV, he's just the example in this case. I have very little hope that the Texans will be drafting a QB in 2015. I'm just asking.
A lot of the things OB expects the QB to do is based on what he sees pre-read. Being able to read defenses & understanding how the routes will affect the defense, dictating how Petty will read his progressions.
That's a skill that is valuable at the next level. At the very least it's something that could be built on, right?
& I'm not arguing with you Papal. I haven't seen enough of Petty to determine if he's a one read guy or not.
Exhibit A on why Petty won't do anything at the next level. Dude threw 50 passes without being touched today and threw for 500+ yards. Good job I guess but that doesn't happen in the NFL.
MSU finally gets pressure on him 3 plays in a row and the result is 2 sacks and a pick to end the game.
The difference between him and Cook in crunch time was startling.

The difference is that Petty isn't the one doing the reading pre snap. Everything in that offense runs through Briles. They call a play, line up, and then Briles looks at the defensive alignment and signals in to the QB what alterations they are going to make. Petty has no decision making responsibility in that process.
I would think Baylor's previous drive was more comparable to MState's last drive. Baylor needed to score to put the game out of reach. Petty did a good job with some good throws to get his team in scoring position, if not for that face-mask... he may have accomplished what he set out to do. Actually, if not for the blocked kick, the game would have been over.
That last drive. 17 seconds in the game... I just don't think it's an apples to apples comparison with Cook's last drive. That's an impossible situation & he's got nothing but bad choices to choose from.
Cook is making a good decision returning to school. He has some accuracy and decision making issues, but he really put it together when he had to. Can see why people are high on him. But another year in school will really help him.

I hate hate hate that they do this in college. There should be a rule...![]()
I don't think it's such a good decision. I think there are several teams that will invest in a first round QB this year, taking advantage of that fifth year option.
I bet most of those teams are looking for an alternative to Winston. He could very well be the second QB taken in this draft, top 5. Next year is next year & a lot of the way people perceive Connor Cook has nothing to do with Connor Cook.
Most likely won't happen, but he might lose his HC & several teammates, putting him in one impossible situation after another & MState may only win 5 games because of it. Then he's just a project. A third round pick if you just have to have a QB.
Taj Boyd was supposed to be a late first & was drafted in the 6th? Because he was the exact same guy he was the year before. Now people are saying, "He couldn't beat out Geno Smith."
Matt Lienart went from the census 1.1 to a reach at 10.
You're speaking as a fan, not what's best for the kid football wise. Look at Luck, Manning and many others. I don't think you can think of draft position if your focus is on your own best football needs. Don't put money first unless you're struggling to survive
Greene needed to catch that one at end of half to make FG easier.
God I hate Oregon. Stupid hippie state.

I can't stand coaches making the reads for their QBs.

Coming to the NFL soon?
