Ryan Mallett (Houston, We Have A Monster)

My previous comment was just a joke and exaggeration, but it kind of boggles my mind to watch a QB start out a game throwing too hard, too high, and behind any receiver who is running sideways at all from the QB's point of view....and then watch him finish the game throwing too hard, too high, and behind any receiver who is running sideways at all from the QB's point of view. Do you ever try doing ANYTHING different? Lead the receiver? TRY to use some touch on the ball? If you're aiming at....what?....their helmet?....then try aiming at the front numbers? Do SOMETHING different. Regarding his passes, all I saw him do differently from the beginning of the game to the end was just try to throw that mother harder. That'll fix it!

OK, so I did see him get a few of them down very late in the game, but that seemed to be going to stand-still receivers.

I'm not ready to just give up on the guy, partly because what else've we got? I just find it astonishing that this guy can't put in a crapload of time practicing throwing slants and crossing patterns until he learns to get the ball down to say 8 feet and only slightly behind the receiver instead of 10+ feet high and a whole yard behind the receiver.

PS-and, dude, you don't fix that by throwing it HARDER!!!!!! LOL

In all fairness, he/they may not have known he needed to practice getting it under 10 feet and less than a yard behind the receiver until today.

Time for practice.

I do agree, though, he had the shanks bad.

Ever see Tin Cup when Roy had the shanks? Mallett had the shanks today.

Well, certainly Mallett will see on film what we saw today. I'm hoping he will take what he saw to heart and work on it this week.

With Tennessee coming in he has a chance to bounce back in a big way if he tries to correct what the film shows.

My fingers are crossed, my hope is in check.

Reminds me of when I used to aim at the top of the catcher's right foot in order to throw a perfect strike. Didn't matter if I ever hit what I was aiming at; just mattered where the ball went, LOL.

I think it is Amazing that after 1 game many of you have already made your decision that Mallet is not the answer.

He has an outstanding game against the browns, then he has a bad one against the Browns. Give the kid a chance, i do not want to become the next organization to mock the Raiders tradition of changing coaches/players faster than Taylor Swift changes boyfriends.

It's my turn, dam it!

This is where I am at. I didn't anoint him the savior after one game and I'm not going to give up on him after one game. The issues he showed today were by and large not a problem last week. He could have simply had a terrible game. It happens.

My one concern I've been voicing for weeks now is his inability to hit that quick wr out to his right. He is always off wide on that play. Not sure if he is scared to throw a pick so he throws wide to avoid it or if he just can't make the throw. I'm going to have to go watch college film on him and see if it's a consistent problem.

Let's just give it a few more games before we decide what he is. But he sucked today no denying that.

O'Brien has been here for almost a year including a draft.

HAHA, honestly to me it seems like he is way more accurate on deep passes. the long sideline pass to Hopkins was just right, if he had dragged his other foot. And even last week on the long int, it was a good pass, just better coverage.

So far mallet has 2 games on his ledger:

1 game he managed nicely.

1 game lost because his accuracy wained and we couldn't establish any real drive.

His footwork looked off all game and that can be corrected. I came away from this game really impressed with his arm strength - but he has no touch and doesnt look consistent. Im not going to be sold until I see a qb win a game on his own. Last time I saw that the oilers were in town.

An outstanding game?

Have to disagree that Mallett had an outstanding game vs Browns as he had a good game. A win and a better than Fitz performance brought hope. There also is no "many" deciding he is not the answer, just some fair evals. I think all want a successful Mallett but he had a good game which we should have won and did and a bad game that most expected to lose. IMO, he needs great games against Tenn and Jags and above average against Colts and Ravens or we need to look elsewhere. Unfortunately, looking elsewhere does not bring many choices. As of today, out QB future looks bleak.

It's funny... watching the game at NRG, the words touch & accuracy don't even enter my mind. Come here on the board & it's all I see. Touch. Accuracy.

So I'm watching the game on TV & that's all they say. Touch. Accuracy.

Now it all makes sense.

mallet was throwing high all game. and down the middle he was throwing behind the receiver. and the checkdowns, lol, comeon you saw that.

Man we can't catch a break. 6 games left to evaluate what we have in Mallet and he gets injured his 2nd game. Sigh

Have confirmed @Ryan_mallett_15 played with a right pectoral injury today. Explains a lot. And wow, what a tough guy. #Texans

Team knew. he was on injury report all week, practiced fully. #Texans >>>>>>>>>did team know? If he kept it a secret, screw him.
PDS ‏@PatDStat
If this is a pectoral tear like they are saying on his throwing side, Mallett could be done for the year. #Texans

What a monkeywrench in the plan if he is injured. If the problem persists for the rest of the year what do you do? Do you have enough data to sign him to a deal? How much would it take? Better served with a rookie QB?

So many questions still surround the most important position for this team.

He would most likely sign cheaper on a one year deal. No one is going to give him big money after one game. Not counting this game for obvious reason (injury)

its simple really

start Savage see what u got there and Cut Fitz and Mallett pepare for the draft and hope a Good QB falls 2 U but we will prob have a top 5 draft pick if we lose out anyway so we will get our pick of the litter or skim through the top F/a QB's or both who knows

We've got more data on him than we did on Schaub. This will allow us to sign him on the cheap. Four years $20M with play off incentives.

I'm confused.

Did the injury get worse during the game?

If they already knew about it why was he okay to play against the Bengals but not okay to play the rest of the games?

So our best option was to play a guy with an injured/torn pec at the QB position? What does that tell us about our crackpot medical and coaching staff?

I hope Mallet just didn't say anything because he wanted field time and was toughing it out. Otherwise...well we already know our medical staff is probably the worst in the league. This is just ridiculous.

Not sure what's hard to understand. They took a gamble on how it would affect him. It turned out worse than expected. Next game is a new calculation with new information (same injury, worse expectation).

Why would you let a QB play who already had a pec injury from the prior game and injured it worse, possibly tearing it, in pregame warmups? $64,000 question.

On the radio they said why didn't they put in Fitz (threw up a little in my mouth) in the 3rd or 4th quarter when the game was still winnable and the fact they knew Mallett was in pain.

Also, the defense was playing with cushions all game while the bengals were playing tight coverage. Don't know why that is.

So the injury didn't actually get worse they just thought that he would play through it better than he did?

Exactly. Is the injury bad enough that he has to sit or is he being benched due to not meeting expectations? If the injury is that bad then why was he allowed to play?

They're saying he's going to have surgery on twitter. More than likely it got worse.

The last question is the key. It sounds like he had the injury and they had decided to go with it after medical evaluation and practice, etc., he came out in pregame and tweaked it harder and they said f'k go with it anyway.

But I took your earlier question to be if he could play hurt last week then why not next week.

Yea it reads like that but that's not what I meant. I'm just confused by the way the whole thing was apparently handled.

I'm not the biggest Mallett fan but I don't think he's at fault at all here. Any player in his position would have tried to give it a go. It's up to the staff to make the best call not just for the team, but the player as well.

They apparently did neither. As not only was he ineffective on the field, but he is apparently injured worse than believed.
