Zach Mettenberger has been named the starting QB this week vs. Houston.

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock
Needs to tighten up accuracy. Slightly throws too far, behind, high or low, way too often. Turns into INTs...will be magnified as a pro.

Lacks mobility &/or great pocket mobility. Struggles rolling out & throwing to his left. These are hit or miss even inside of 10 yards.

Unexplainable inaccuracies on quick slants that arise from nowhere. Lacks pocket awareness. Takes unnecessary sacks.

Mettenberger Negatives: Doesn't show up big in big moments. Makes crucial mistakes that lead to unfavorable outcomes.

Sees the blueprint of closing windows & fits in to tight windows. Throws w/ touch & velocity. Controlled touch in redzone.

Ability to progress thru reads & scan partial to full field. Tremendous growth from 2012 to 2013. Offense held him back, could be better pro

Comfortable w/ back to defense. Good ball location on on sideline routes from 20-45 yds. Puts on outside shoulder & gives WR a shot.

Can make all the throws. Great w/ throws outside the numbers w/ anticipation. Ran tons of play-action & reps from under center.

I labeled him a Matt Schaub with a much better arm. Great size & frame.

Ok, I promise I'm tapping out after this, but for the late night crowd here are my draft notes on Zach Mettenberger....

One guy's opinion pre-draft, fwiw.

Early in the QB talk, I liked him..... because of his size, because of his arm, because of his stats. Then I watched a couple of games & a bunch of highlight reels & thought he had to have had the best WR tandem in all of college football. Those two guys, Odell & the other WR, were awesome at locating the ball & adjusting to it, contorting their bodies & hellafied hands. The other receivers weren't bad either, TEs & RBs. But those two.... they'd make me look great.

& I'm only ok.

So I've still got a lot of questions that I really haven't been able to answer yet, pertaining to his accuracy & ball placement, but for the most part I thought he didn't understand ball placement at all, watching what his receivers had to do.

I didn't watch him in the preseason, but I'm told he looked aiight.

I'm no Fitz fan by ANY means & while I can't figure out why our beloved coach didn't avail himself of quite a few very decent options for the position open when we were picking, I thank God we did not take Johnny Football, who I hear will play this week. A spoiled brat who I can't imagine leading a team anywhere but to the next bar.

Through Week 9, barring a miracle from Luck...

I'm not too sure what you're trying to say. These guys are rookies.... none of that means anything. At this point in their career, it's not about getting knocked down, it's about continuing to get back up.

Most of us wouldn't have a problem if we were 1-6 with a "franchise" QB taking his lumps.

I'm not "saying" anything. People are interested ProFootballFocus grades... they speak for themselves. I should've noted above Bortles = 7 games.

I will "say" that at this point in their rookie seasons the 2012 QB class was:

Andrew Luck +9.5
Robert Griffin III +24.7
Ryan Tannehill +7.1 (8 games)
Brandon Weeden -12.8
Russell Wilson +22.4

Derek Carr -- throwing out his first game had averaged a lowish 6.3 yards per pass attempt... in his last 3 games that has dropped to an awful 4.6 yards per attempt. Dink and dunksville.

This with a strong-armed QB and speedy WRs, is really stunting his growth and taking away what he does well. Raiders need a new coaching staff -- again -- with an offensive vertical mindset, imo. The Al Davis Raiders of yore.

Zachenberger looks the part of an NFL QB most to me. He has a pretty good line and uses the time look downfield for passing.

The more I watch Teddy the more it looks like he palms the ball. Good in hurry-up and shorter, rougher farther out. And he does look small to me. Calm.

Carr as above. Needs a coaching staff reboot.

Bortles having a rough time of it. Really should have more INTs than he does, and gets alot of his plus yards/plays in garbage time. He has fallen back(pun intended) into old habits. But he's out there chucking it and I think that's what his coaches are telling him to do. One thing I can say about Bortles vs. Luck is I'm not seeing Bortles take the big hits that Andrew still does. Important to maintain availability.

I agree for the most part. I haven't really seen enough of Bridgewater to see how he's doing in his system, but my biggest hold-up on him is his size. Hopefully I'll catch a game or two before the season is over. But yeah, Mettenberger looked to be the most "ready"

How does it make you guys feel that we took Tom Savage ahead of this guy? I'll admit that Savage was lower on my list, but I think Mettenberger passes the eyeball test & if I had to bet, I'd bet he's going to have a very nice career in the NFL. May not be the next Brady, but I think he can definitely be the Titans Schaub (which should allow the rest of that team to "catch up" & be ready when they do find their next QB of the future).

So watching Mettenberger play makes me feel good about Tom Savage, of course that's assuming the Texans evaluation of Savage is better than mine (which it should be).

I never was a believer in Mettenburger and watching him play only strengthens that feeling.

I always thought that Mettenberger's closest NFL comparison was Ryan Mallett. So there's that.. :kitten:

Zach Mettenberger said he wants to prove himself as a tough guy. Plans to play next week to prove he's not soft

Mettenberger said he has a grade 1 AC joint sprain. Expects to play next week #Titans

Bridgewater and Bortles are both quite good in 2-minute drill -- unusual.

Manziel may be starting next week... tough to put the genie back in the bottle.

everyone is starting now cept our boy savage

idk if the raiders will start Matt against the 49ers since the last time he played them well.............

Rookie QB progress report: Teddy Bridgewater, Derek Carr solid
Bucky Brooks and Daniel Jeremiah

Before the 2014 NFL season began, Daniel Jeremiah and Bucky Brooks reviewed nine rookie quarterbacks. As we head into the final month of the year, we asked them to check in on the five rookie quarterbacks who have seen significant game action. Who's stood out among this class? Who projects as a steady starter for years to come? Check out the progress reports below, arranged according to draft order...

Chad Withrow ‏@withrowzone
Greg Cosell strongly believes that Zach Mettenberger is the #Titans QB of the future.

"Best rookie QB to play this year and it's not close."

Chad Withrow ‏@withrowzone

I feel the same way, but it's an awful small sample size.

Blake Bortles... I've been going through his highlights from this year, I think he's got it all & can be very good one day... but I don't trust the Jags & their offensive staff to make that happen.

Zachenberger likely out for the season with a second injury to his shoulder.

Teddy had a nice game, winning in OT with a bubble screen that went 87 yards for TD.

Derek Carr really shined today against the floundering 49ers.

Teddy's intelligence at the line of scrimmage won them that game too. Which I bring up only because it was considered his biggest asset as a prospect, but it is an intangible that is hard to quantify.

Looked like he read the blitz and checked out of the play and into the bubble screen. New York kept the blitz on anyway and got burned.
