Ray Rice arrested in Atlantic City

If TMZ could get the video, you better believe the multi-billion dollar NFL could get the video.

I believed Ray Rice's apology. Then I saw the video. It wasn't what he did, it's what he didn't do. He didn't show any surprise, any sadness, any regret. I'm supposed to believe this is the worst thing that he ever did in his life (as per his apology) and yet after he did it he casually stands over her and doesn't so much as check to see if she's ok?
Disgusting.

I'm actually relieved he was cut/banned for life. Good riddance

Was the nfl going to pay for the video? I'm sure tmz paid a nice amount to get it

I will not pile on when others are doing so much moralizing on this issue. But I do have an issue with many of those piling on.

Why is a man hitting a woman, bad as that is, somehow unacceptable while a man hitting a man, a woman hitting a man or a woman hitting a woman any less acceptable?

Seriously..?

You have got to be shitting me... :mariopalm: gee I wonder why others are "pilling on"?

LOL, Do you really not see the difference and can't differentiate between the power of sexes? should I now explain the birds and the bees to you also... My God. You really can't see the difference or understand the outrage can you?

I don't believe for one second that the NFL didn't see the video (and by "NFL" I mean someone of consequence, if not the Commissioner himself).

Someone is Lying about whether the NFL saw the Ray Rice Tape

They certainly could have gotten the video. And because they easily could have, I find it hard to believe they didn't, considering the nature of the act and accusation.

This is the latest (and biggest) blow to an office and commissioner that Bill Simmons took to task just a few days ago, in a Grantland piece that's somewhat prophetic considering what's happened in the last day:

The League that Never Sleeps

That leaves 22 NFL weeks that shouldn’t matter at all, right?

Not on Roger Goodell’s watch! His league just made professional sports history by dominating headlines, day in and day out, for 52 straight weeks. Sure, most of those stories were unflattering, perplexing, embarrassing, inappropriate or downright disturbing. Did Goodell even care? The league treated 2014’s offseason the same way a celebrity might behave after his PR person tells him, “Just remember, any publicity is good publicity.” As weird as this sounds, it kinda sorta worked. We talked about the NFL the entire time.

And somehow, Goodell escaped the spring and summer relatively unscathed, save for anyone still seething about his Earnest Byner–level fumbling of Ray Rice’s situation. The commish needed five months to determine a verdict, then bungled that verdict so gravely that he (a) improbably offended every single type of football fan (especially female fans), (b) had to send team owners an after-the-verdict letter to apologize for screwing up the first verdict, and (c) speed-rushed a harsher domestic violence policy that’s loaded with easy-to-exploit loopholes.

When Keith Olbermann called for him to resign afterward, nobody even blinked. We’re just used to Goodell now. I wouldn’t call him a bad person, or a malicious one — just someone who seems overmatched AND stubborn. That’s a toxic combination...

When you remember how terribly Goodell botched 2012’s referee strike or the Saints’ bounty scandal (remember, his old boss came back to clean it up!), it’s frightening to imagine how Goodell would have handled something infinitely more complicated like, say, the NBA’s recent Donald Sterling quagmire. Even when Goodell belatedly tries to do the “right” thing — abruptly changing the league’s on-field violence penalties in 2010 without giving the players enough time to adjust, sacrificing the 2012 Saints as his scapegoat in a misguided attempt to prove that the league was getting safer, blowing this summer’s aforementioned Ray Rice fiasco, or waiting nearly six months to announce this week’s inevitably controversial Jim Irsay suspension — Goodell always seems to be reacting instead of acting. Not the most flattering trait for the leader of America’s biggest sport.

At this point, I wonder if there will be anything concrete about the NFL's possible (likely?) awareness of the tape's contents and, if so, what the repercussions will be.

I've long thought he was a PR-driven slimeball, style over substance and perception over reality. This has only cemented that bias.

Not sure why people think the NFL could easily gotten the video. It was a private entity's property and one which probably gets asked all the time and may very well have a policy against handing them out. I asked at a bank one time when my truck was broken into and they said no.

I already think the NFL is going a little too far... this was a criminal matter. a civil matter, not an NFL matter. If you or I were caught on video doing the exact same thing, we'd still be employed. I know my company wouldn't even suggest anger management or anything.

I don't feel sorry for Ray Rice, & I'm not defending him in anyway, only the way the NFL has gotten itself in the middle of it. They decided to put themselves out there as the "moral police" & that's fine. They've got a big stage & maybe some responsibility.

But I don't expect them to do the work that detectives, law enforcement, & reporters are supposed to do & get to the truth. They acted on the information they had, then went on about their business of football.

I have no problem with that.

When new information came out, they acted again, & are now trying to get on about their business of football.

I have no problem with that.

What exactly did people think happened in that elevator? Why is what he did so much worse now than it was before? I didn't see anything in that video that I didn't expect to see.
Thats what ive been thinking all day. I just saw the video and was not surprised. He knocked her out and admitted it. I doubt it was his first time, either. I guess if you're not on tape committing the crime, it's not that bad?

Would you be so kind to share a source on the life time ban for Rice.

Is this a passive way of saying something? Just curious. I don't have any sources that you don't have. Im just assuming that "indefinite" means "forever" because reinstating him would be a PR disaster

For one, TMZ says they have proof that the NFL knew the video existed and could get their hands on it but chose not to. And will share it tomorrow.

Are you kidding me? I would be fired as soon as it was public. Maybe before. The higher profile your job, the more likely that you will be fired for public misconduct. Entertainment is the highest profile there is, but there are a lot of people making less than $3m that would still be fired so quickly their head would spin for breaking the law like this in this way. Honestly, I would probably resign in shame

It doesn't matter if the NFL saw the video or not.

They knew he knocked her out.

They did their "due process" and slapped the guy with a 2 game suspension.

Nothing has changed other than everyone has gotten to see what everyone already knew.

Why has he been suspended? Nothing has changed.

Goodell is a joke.

She went ahead and married him after this incident. I wonder how long before she divorces him now that he has no job and very likely won't be able to get one

Why is a man hitting a woman, bad as that is, somehow unacceptable while a man hitting a man, a woman hitting a man or a woman hitting a woman any less acceptable? But at least half go out of their way to mention him, a man, hitting a woman as unacceptable implying the other violence is somehow acceptable.

Just my thoughts on a 24 hour news cycle where everyone gets to express moral outrage at someone elses act while ignoring their own outrageous acts.

I don't beat my wife. If she struck me I still wouldn't. That's my moral compass. I like women and believe punching them in the face is worthy of outrage. The fact that his employer basically excused it until it was basically backed into a corner adds to this.

I don't need a bible or a higher power here. My own eyes, brain and ears will do just fine.

The teams of this league routinely hire PI's who uncover information on potential draftees and players and the NFL hires ex-FBI for their security stuff. They saw this tape well before today and the press conference with Rice, his now wife, and lawyers and Ravens staff (where she apologized for her role in this incident) is now really disgusting in hindsight.

If you or I were caught on video doing the exact same thing, we'd still be employed. I know my company wouldn't even suggest anger management or anything.

Disagree. If I were arrested on a domestic violence charge I would be fired. My company wouldn't suggest anger management; They would delete my building access codes and mail my last check. And good for them. I work for a public organization that depends on public support and we're rightly held to the standard of compliance with criminal law. Not a "higher" standard when you really think about it, but the standard of not being a felon.

The NFL is a private company, yes, but they're inherently dependent on public image. The majority of their money comes from TV and sponsorships. If their employees (or now maybe we have to say their Commissioner?) are doing something that harms the bottom line, that's neither civil nor criminal. It's business.

The NFL players don't need to be America's moral compass, but the NFL's employees (and management, Mr. Goodell) should at least be able to follow that compass. Don't commit felonies, and don't cover up for those who do. It's not complicated.

I am a diehard fan, but If Ray Rice were a Texan, I would have never watched or financially supported this team again until he was gone.

This NFL picture becomes even more unbelievable!

TMZ says NFL never bothered to ask casino for video
Posted by Darin Gantt on September 9, 2014, 5:36 AM EDT

The organization which shared the Ray Rice punching his wife in the face video with the world said the NFL never asked for it.

TMZ wrote this morning that league officials never contacted the Revel Casino to request video footage they might have had, and that the casino “would have gladly complied” had they been asked.

Of course, as Florio mentioned last night, there were plenty of other ways to obtain the video which got Rice fired instantly and suspended indefinitely.

TMZ’s sources said that the casino made a copy of the elevator footage for police, and Rice’s lawyer has a copy along with TMZ. So there are at least three of them floating around.

The league insisted yesterday they had requested information from law enforcement officials, but didn’t see the tape until TMZ shared it with the world yesterday morning.

Barring a credible explanation from the NFL, the only options at the moment seem to be willful ignorance or gross negligence, and neither is a particularly good look for the league right now.

Well, not unexpectedly, here comes the disgusting creation of a Goodell/NFL scapegoat.

From PFT:

he law enforcement agency handling the case.

“Security for Atlantic City casinos is handled by the New Jersey State Police,” the NFL said in a statement released to PFT. “Any videos related to an ongoing criminal investigation are held in the custody of the state police. As we said yesterday: We requested from law enforcement any and all information about the incident, including the video from inside the elevator. That video was not made available to us.”

While the fact that Rice was suspended only two games continues to be the best evidence that the NFL didn’t actually see the video, the latest statement from the league confirms that the persons with the job duties of gathering the information on behalf of the league failed.

Miserably.

Some guy in the league office named Will is about to get fired. :kitten:

Within this information, the answer lies. The NFL asked the Police for a copy. They said no. TMZ asked the Casino for a copy. They said yes.

There is no cover up, just a difference of sources.

#1- Until the video came out, everything that was written about what happened in the elevator was speculation.

#2- Rice told the Ravens and the NFL that his wife attacked him, he shoved her to 'defend himself' and she hit her head knocking herself unconscious. The video shows different.

#3- The Ravens are/were prevented by the CBA from disciplining the player until the NFL adjudicated the case

#4- if the NFL said they asked for the tape and didn't get it but the Casino (which just went out of business) said they had it available for them, then that's not on the Ravens....that's on the NFL security team handling the case.

#5- I am deeply disappointed in Rice personally- no way a man hits a woman ever....(unless she has a weapon and its life threatening)

As your hometown newspaper notes here, that's not entirely accurate. You really don't think the guy's employer, the Ravens franchise, was just utterly weak and without the ability to gather any info on their own? Every franchise has a security team. Every franchise conducts background checks and hires investigators to check out their prospective free agents and draftees. It is not possible that they just quit doing that once these guys are signed. If the Ravens wanted to find out, they could have. They either knew (as Rice's attorney did because he had the full video) or deliberately didn't know.

No, they couldn't discipline him. But you know what they could do, at any point? Exactly what they just did. Cut him. They chose not to. As the Sun describes them:

"For all Mr. Harbaugh’s talk of character and family, the Ravens are a business. They supported Mr. Rice when they thought he still added value to the team. Now, no amount of on-field talent can make up for the revulsion Ravens fans will feel when they remember the sight of his left fist smashing into Ms. Palmer’s face. If team officials really hadn’t seen the video until Monday, their unwavering support for Mr. Rice was reckless, in that they had to assume that it would have come out eventually, and callous, in that they knew all the pertinent facts about what happened in the elevator without having seen it. Evidently the Ravens can stomach having a player who would knock a woman down and then treat her with all the care he would give to a sack of flour — just so long as the public doesn’t see it."

The Ravens or any other franchise always defer to the NFL for investigations when they become public (as per my source a former NFL player rep) Yes each team has their own security team to investigate players.

If it were you, would you tell your lawyer to give the damning video to YOUR employer? I think not.

No, they couldn't discipline him. But you know what they could do, at any point? Exactly what they just did. Cut him. They chose not to. As the Sun describes them:

Yes they supported him, at that point they had no reason to not believe Rice. There was no video image in their heads as to what he did- just speculation or imagination as to what he did.

In black and white though, the images were too much for anyone to bear.

21 teams out of 32 have players charged with Domestic Assault/Abuse right now- NONE have a damaging video tape to crucify them. What do you think happens to the other guys?

Anybody who really thinks the NFL or the Ravens did not see the video that made all the waves yesterday should listen to this radio broadcast of Daria and Mel that had an interview with Chris Mortensen here

“I think the expectations from around the league — even from the Ravens internally — was that it would be more than two games,” Mortensen answered. “We’ve all seen the TMZ video of Ray dragging [his fiancée] off an elevator. I’m told by numerous sources — or, a few good sources — that the video from inside the elevator, which we’ve never seen, shows Janay surely attacking Ray, so he’s in a confined area. But still, what they tell you to do, is get away from it or restrain. You can restrain her, but you can’t deliver a punch, an uppercut, which Ray allegedly did inside that elevator. I’m told that Janay hit her head on the railing. That would seem to justify a pretty severe sanction.”

It seems as though SOMEBODY saw the tape well before any of this stuff was leaked. Those details from Mortensen, especially the part about Janay (then) Palmer hitting her head on the rail seems especially damning because that is a big big detail that I think only people who saw it happen would know about.

shut up quit defending your terrible ass football team for trying to cover up a spouse abuser.

If you actually read what I posted instead of auto-responding like an idiot homer you would've seen that in the mortensen quote he is relaying what a SOURCE told him about the second video which popped up today.

How can you even defend a team that let rice, his wife and some lawyers get up in front of a mic and have janay rice apologize for her role in this when her role was basically getting knocked the **** out.

Go back to whatever ravens forum you slimed your way out of.

EDIT: LOL "defended" himself. Please. get the **** out.

Um, I quoted the word because he allegedly "defended" himself.

I never once believe him to be innocent. I am intimately familiar with domestic abuse from a close friend and a family member. I bet 80% of the membership in here is also.

My problem is with all the mis-information that is floating around.

Cris Carter on mike & mike this morning also made another good point about this whole mess. What happened on the casino floor that got this whole thing started? Casinos have cameras everywhere..so what i want to know is why hasn't that video surfaced? As Carter says, i doubt they were mad at each other before hand & still got all dressed up to go to the casino. It still doesn't mean he should've did what he did...but there's obviously more to what happened than just what everyone sees on the tape.

The domestic disputes I've witnessed and in some cases been apart of are rarely as one-sided as this one appears to be on video.

This is the same franchise that has a statue of a man who killed somebody in front of their stadium. Does this story really surprise you?

To me it was very obvious that Rice has done this before due to his complete nonchalance toward his actions. I would understand if he had tried to detain her before hitting her. Or if he had hit her and then became scared and reacted in a concerned manner. Instead he drags her out of the elevator and dumps her on the floor like a heap of garbage.

Dumped her head first onto the ground. Her face just smashes into the ground as he drops her. He actually dropped her nonchalantly in the elevator as well.

What you posted is exactly what he said. Ray Rice told the NFL & the Ravens he was defending himself. Meaning he pushed her or something else of that nature & she slipped, hitting her head on the rail, which knocked her out.

The NFL & the Ravens appear to have been fine with that. I'd be fine with that, if that's what happened.

However, he threw a Left Cross (they said upper cut), which would have been taken completely differently. If Ray Rice would have said, "She came at me, so I delivered an uppercut straight to her jaw." they would have handled it differently.

Of course he didn't mention spitting in her face twice. Anyone that spits in your face is not a friend. Life lessons.

I recommend the rest of the posters here do the same

That's your option but you are letting emotion on this topic run away with you (and please knock off the insults). handswarmer has been a well behaved visiting fan who talks more football than most.

Folks generally need to simmer down a little. Lack of ability to control emotions and responses has more than a little to do with this thread's existence.

I heard 2 things today that I feel deserve mentioning.

1) The NFL needs a lawyer as their commissioner. Goodell is not the right fit.

2) The NFL only reacted with outrage due to the outrage. Its sad but that simple.

We don't have Kubiak anymore, that's something we don't have.

I guess it's next man up, huh handswarmer?

Who is that Justin Forsett?

Have fun Raven fan, your franchise just got a cold left hook.

This is the #NFLs problem in a neat bow: Ray Lewis on @ESPN lecturing Ray Rice on ethics.

wow. Same mentality of electing China, Russia, and Saudi Arabia to the U.N. Human Rights Council.

Sounds legit. :ok:

Not sure why people think the NFL could easily gotten the video. It was a private entity's property and one which probably gets asked all the time and may very well have a policy against handing them out. I asked at a bank one time when my truck was broken into and they said no.

You'd think with all the conspiracy minded folks around here, someone would be more concerned about building 7.

I don't get the mentality that the NFL saw this video but was not willing to dish out punishment. It makes no sense. They are not going to risk the global brand for one player.

They, and the franchise, believed Ray Rice's wife and bought his lies. Yeah, egg on thier face now, but it is illogical to assume that they were not willing to throw the book at a player that was tarnishing the shield. I think it's Occam's razor: they were duped by the player and his wife, who was obvious trying to protect their income stream.

And fans...geesh. NFL fans forgave an accessory to double-homicide and a dog killer (among many, many other offenses). It is only a matter of time before these same fans believe Ray Rice's Oprah apology tour and public service messages and embrace him back to the league. It's what this country, through the media, likes to do. Tear down celebrities then accept them back. Lather, rinse, repeat.

LoL - Rice is being removed from Madden 15; LINK

EA Sports is expected to remove former-Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice from Madden 15, according to Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports.

Citing sources, Garafolo tweeted that EA Sports will remove Rice from the Ravens' roster and will not make him available in free agent pools. The change will be made via the next round of tuning updates, which are used to adjust discrepancies in game-play and update rosters.

The last tuning update came on Sept. 5 in preparation of the NFL's first week of games. Updates included the final 53-man rosters and an adjustment to pass rush tuning.

...

EA Sports has not yet make an announcement about the decision and has yet to respond to inquiries for content.

I've left this up to comment.

1) Mort, King, Schefter et al do NOT go on the record like this unless they have ironclad proof, due to their sources. There's a reason these networks employ these individuals, and a reason why their breaking news always beats the competition. They aren't tabloid guys, they're news guys in sports jobs.

2) The NFL has one of the biggest and most robust security budgets around, and each team does as well. They have the ability and budget to get whatever they need when they need it. Anyone who buys the mere suggestion they didn't either have access to the video or couldn't get it is beyond naive, they're stupid. The sad truth is they just wanted this all swept under the rug. Their outrage was simply a reaction to public outrage.

3) The leaders in that misinformation is the NFL. Again, they wanted desperately to sweep something under the rug they have blown since the story broke in Feb.

People need to wake up. This isn't the first time the NFL has gone this route. Concussions, Jevon Belcher, etc. Misinformation is something they have perfected to ensure the cash keeps coming in.

I heard 2 things today that I feel deserve mentioning.

1) The NFL needs a lawyer as their commissioner. Goodell is not the right fit.

2) The NFL only reacted with outrage due to the outrage. Its sad but that simple.

Goodell is a lawyer I believe.
