That's crazy. You can't just cut a starter like that. Give him time to ease back into playing shape and show off his skillz. Before you know it, he'll be a full contributor, a real team guy, and back to his pro bowl level of performance!

From the appearance of the cast.....a short arm fully-enclosed "club" cast, it appears he has not probably suffered a finger or wrist fracture, but rather a metacarpal hand fracture.

Five bones (“metacarpals”) are in the hand that connect the bones of the wrist (“carpus”) with those of the digits (“phalanges”). Approximately ¼ of metacarpal fractures occur in the thumb metacarpal. Of these fractures of the thumb metacarpal, 80% occur at the base (the end closer to the wrist). The Bennett's fracture is the most common type of fracture to the thumb metacarpal base. A Bennett's fracture is an intra-articular fracture, or one that extends into the joint between the metacarpal and wrist bone (“trapezium”). This injury most often occurs in contact sports such as football, rugby, and boxing. This and a similar but more complex fracture, a Rolando fracture occurs when the thumb is jammed and/or bent back or outward.

If the fracture can be reduced without making an incision (not in the case of the more complicated Rolando fracture), often two pins will be placed through poke holes and cut just below the skin. If the surgeon needs to make an incision to “line up” the fracture fragments, either K-wires or screws can be placed through the incision to hold the fracture fragments in place during direct visualization. If wires are used, they can typically be removed after the fracture shows signs of healing, usually at 4 to 6 weeks after surgery. In the athlete, especially the high level athlete, surgical intervention is more effective in stabilizing the fracture (closed fracture repair approach is more likely to be unsuccessful) and often allows for an earlier return to sport.

Since each fracture pattern is somewhat different, the stability of the fracture after surgical treatment or nonoperative treatment has to be determined in order to determine the return to play time. For example, if a large fracture fragment was solidly repaired with multiple screws, the surgeon may have confidence releasing an athlete to activity sooner. That club cast allows him additional protection from transmitting stress to the healing fracture site. Still, most players are not allowed back to the field for 3-4 weeks. I guess since this is his non-dominant hand, they are trying to get him back onto the field as soon as possible. It could affect his ball security though.
