I honestly do not think it is the partying that is the issue. Everyone understands that young dudes with lots of money thrown at them are going to have some fun.

It is the narcissism and self-absorbed marketing strategy of "Johnny Football" as a trademarked brand (not to mention the overwhelming hype) that folks are starting to reject. It is his apparent obsession with publicity and "look at me!" about everything that gets old when he is not a proven commodity at this point in time.

Andre likes to go out a lot too. Pretty sure there are other guys that like to party on the Texans, but I know for a fact Andre goes out quite a bit.

For the record, I don't care either way about Manziel. I mean, I don't believe he's going to be a good NFL QB, but I'm not rooting against him--or for him.

But the whole Manziel thing is just interesting to follow to me. We'll call it curiosity.

I'm the same way. I joke about the Bieber thing (because I think the twerp is just another shallow corporate tool that represents everything wrong with music), but I could not care less about Manziel. He's just another entertainer, so I'm going to enjoy the ride and be entertained.

And I will be amused if he lives up to the hype or if he fails. Either way, it's just entertainment and has no impact on my life.

Has he put out any JF merchandise? I know there are a lot of people out there who has & he gets a piece of that, because he had the forethought to trademark it.

Personally I thought it was a smart move, if people were going to use him to make money, he might as well get a share.


PS... to tell you the truth, I'm about tired of all the JJ Watt talk we're getting. Similar to what people are feeling about Manziel, I'm feeling for JJ Watt. Shut up & play football.

Yep. after the hype and record-breaking contract, the Boss only played in 24 games in his less than 2 year career, and only ended up with 4 sacks and 3 fumble recoveries. Of course, to his credit, he became a TV sportscaster........appropriately, for the the short-lived XFL.....then on to an even less eventful acting career. Lots of wasted hype.

He's not the first to gloss himself as "Johnny Football". He's just the first to trademark it. Smart move...if he pays his dues and earns the status as a professional player.

Take his own website for instance, with this statement on it:

"The ultimate fan page for Johnny Football as he sets out on his record setting NFL campaign."

Who makes that statement about themselves, that they are setting out on a "record setting NFL campaign", before the have even played a single down of pro football?

Arrogant narcissism, man. And with his statement about practice and how he can turn it on in real games, I think he's starting to believe his own hype. The truly great players in the league do not take practice for granted, and they take every opportunity to improve themselves. That's not the vibe (or reputation) that Manziel has right now. Actually quite the opposite.

At least JJ Watt has actually accomplished something in the NFL and proved himself as an elite player before the media crush. I never heard anything about JJ before his rookie season, and did not hear much about him during that season in the national media. We Texans fans were just starting to wake up to the potential of the player, and the playoffs really showed us what he was going to be about.

I agree on both points, but he has the power to tell those that do write it to tone it down a bit. I personally believe he's one of those personalities that likes the attention and gloss.

But hey, it is what it is, and the circus is almost always fun. Manziel is just one of those clowns in the league right now. Not an insult or anything, but just a statement of what he represents on the entertainment spectrum.

Johnny Manziel says Browns fans will see a difference between what he’s shown in training camp and what he’ll show when they start playing games.

Asked if he expects to perform better once the games start than he has so far in practice, Manziel said that’s always been his way.

“Always, for me, I’ve been better in a game situation than I feel I have in practice. But I have to come out here and get better with the reps that I’m getting. That’s the main thing, keep getting better, and then when it’s time to go out and play football, it’s time to play football,” Manziel said.

At Texas A&M, Manziel was often at his best improvising when plays broke down and using his feet to avoid the pass rush. But in practices, a quarterback doesn’t get that opportunity: Coaches want to see the play run in practice exactly the way it’s drawn up, and when the pass rush gets near the quarterback, the play is blown dead. Manziel thinks that makes him a better game-day player than practice player.

“There will be times in games, situations in games when things break down, and obviously it’s not practice, there are not coaches on the field, and it will be a little bit — it will be a lot different. But practice is what it is, and we have to get better,” Manziel said.

At the moment, Manziel is running the second-string offense, and Brian Hoyer is the starter. Manziel may have to play better in practice to show that he deserves to start when it’s game time.

Browns rookie Johnny Manziel appears to be on Brian Hoyer’s heels after running in Akron
The bottom line is Manziel appears to have narrowed the gap between himself and Hoyer with his performance in the scrimmage. Still, Manziel described his rookie growing pains and attempt to learn the intricacies of the playbook as “a struggle” last week, so he must focus solely on overcoming those obstacles to surpass Hoyer.

“There’s no gap that I’m looking at right now,” Manziel said after the scrimmage. “It’s know the playbook, know everything. There’s still so many little things here and there that can throw a play and change a play and a defensive look, and that’s stuff that I wasn’t used to. Now I’m seeing it, adjusting, learning.”

Manziel said he hasn’t talked to the coaches about when he’ll receive first-team reps, though they’re likely on the horizon.

“I’m fine with how things are going and I’m learning,” he said. “That’s really the only thing I need to be worried about right now.”

Excluding red-zone drills, Manziel completed 3-of-7 passes for 14 yards with runs of 9 and 5 yards in 11-on-11 sessions. He almost never dropped back in the pocket, read the defense and struck — his coaches know he must improve in those areas to succeed in the NFL — but he found unconventional ways to make plays, including on read option and out of the pistol formation...

Going back to Stabler and Namath, I think with all of the social media now, people would've been snapping a lot of pictures with those guys and they would've probably had as much anti-fans as they did fans.

How many people who were alive for it remember Namath's Garuntee happening live and if there were a lot of stodgy old-types who just wanted him to put his head down and play the game?
 
There are some things that you just expect a player to know by the time he gets to the NFL. Johnny will not learn his right from his left by reading the playbook. Today, near the goal line in scrimmage he turned the wrong way to hand the ball off. Looked like an idiot playing airball.
 
His worst offense is his "money" symbol, raising his arms and rubbing his fingers together every time a camera is on him. I want to kick him in the dick every time he does that.

Nah but seriously...I think he might make some plays...ALA Keenum, or even like VY or RG3 when he first came into the league...or Cam Newton....Vick...

But I'm fairly convinced that he's going to be figured out at some point (IF he has early success)...But the key will be how/if he can overcome that and become a real QB, because right now he's not that.

I saw some clips of him in Browns practice and he looked bad. One play he scrambled out to his right (would have been sacked but the defender just touched him), He then launched and threw a duck to the other side of the field that was woefully short...The WR came back to the ball and made a sliding catch though...

Saw some other clips of him struggling to get the ball out and throwing bad balls on crossing patters getting balls tipped away by DB's.

Manziel has A LOT to work on. What MIGHT help him out early is his mobility and improvisation. But I don't think he's going to have a successful career depending on those skills. He's going to have to become a real QB at some point if he wants folks to eat crow.

Unlikely considering he'll most likely be doing this at the start of the season. I've said it before, if he's to have success he probably needs to sit a year.

What will determine the issuance of said "crow"? Whether he starts...? Whether he flops or not if he starts? Whether his game completely translates to the NFL IF he starts?

And preseason performance is no indication of real season performance. A word of advice, take or leave it: No crow should be served, nor boasting be done, based on him having what looks like success against other teams' 2nd and 3rd string squads.
 
I guess people forget that Johnny was actually pretty good from the pocket in college. All I'm saying is that in the preseason, the signs will start showing and that he is going to start for the Browns Week 1, imo. He is a special player.

I expect some excellent tips.

Tebow had good numbers in the pocket too. VY keenum. Ect. He didn't make many reads.

He'll be the first to tell you it's an adjustment to what he was doing at am.

So were a whole host of other spread offense qbs...it means nothing on the next level...see Kevin Kolb, Graham Harrell, Timmy Chang etc....

yeah....some signs will start showing....the kind that say "i'm not ready to be a starter.." or " i am not a starter or NFL caliber qb.....period." For your sake and the Browns' you'd better hope it's not the latter.

I don't have anything against that interview, but you know he knows the Browns spent quite a bit to get him. He's going to get his chance, whether this year or next. He knows he's a big part of the current regime's plans. So if they decide it's better for him & the Browns if Johnny plays later rather than sooner, then so be it.

His time is coming, it's only a matter of time. It's up to him to make sure he's prepared.

I remember being appalled at his Gaul. But disrespect was cool at the time among the younger crowd, except for me as far as I could tell. I was just an old codger in the making at that time.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Johnny Manziel has pulled ahead of Brian Hoyer in the quarterback race following his flashy debut in Detroit, according to a report.

Citing a Browns source, ESPN's Bob Holtzman reported that Manziel has overtaken the sixth-year pro in the battle for the starting job after his promising performance in Saturday night's 13-12 loss to the Lions.

A source told cleveland.com that Manziel has the momentum and that the superior talent. They've also been pleased with his leadership and progress since the beginning of camp. If he plays well in Washington on Monday Night Football Aug. 18, he'll be very much in the conversation for that week one start in Pittsburgh.

Displaying some of his Johnny Football style, Manziel competed 7-of-11 attempts (64%) for 63 yards in four series of work with the second-team offense. He also led the Browns with 27 yards on six carries, including a 16-yard scramble after he which he slid like a major leaguer.

Manziel will most likely get the start against the Redskins and Robert Griffin III, but Pettine wasn't ready to go there after the game...

After last night's debacle at QB if Manziel dethrones Hoyer I say we trade for Hoyer. He looked decent last night, and much better than the turds we have at QB.

If we're trading for backups, I really thought the Bears Jimmy Clausen looked good against the Eagles. He still has a major league arm, and now he looks like he has a clue to playing QB. I really respect Marc Trestman as a QB developer.

It wouldn't surprise me if Tim Tebow's agent has contacted the Texans after last night.

Wouldn't surprise me if the Texans initiated the contact. And with Vince Young's agent. After last night the Texans are probably trying to find the numbers of the agents for Ryan Leaf and JaMarcus Russell.
