The Johnny "Football" Manziel NFL thread

I can tell you for a fact that Texans players party. But they are very, very, discrete about it.
I think the guy that drowned at one of defensive end Antonio Smith's notorious pool parties would disagree. :) Can you imagine a guy drowning in full clothes at Manziel's house during a party? Double standards for guys like Manziel.

"He was not dressed to be swimming in the pool, I can say that," Burger said.

Set your DVRs, ESPN2 is airing a special on Johnny Manziel tonight at 6:00 pm CT.

Dude has yet to play a single down of football in the NFL and he gets his own ESPN special?

I just don't get it. Until he actually plays in the NFL, it is nothing but hype, and very Tebow 2.0.

NFLN just did another Top 100, which is 100 players that deserve their own special over this dude.

Yeah, there is a double standard for guys like Manziel, and this is the other half of it. Utter BS.

All they did was string together clips from previous airings on ESPN.

Totally worthless for both guys.

Report: Johnny Manziel’s off-field actions have “alarmed” Browns
Posted by Mike Wilkening on July 25, 2014, 2:35 PM EDT

At the outset of Browns training camp comes a published report indicating the organization is concerned about Johnny Manziel’s off-field activities this offseason.

Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, citing unnamed sources, reported Friday that the Browns were “alarmed” by Manziel’s off-field actions since joining the organization, with the now-infamous dollar bill picture particularly concerning to the organization.

Moreover, the Plain Dealer reports that Manziel’s play in OTAs “regressed” as the workouts went on — and that members of the organization believed it could be chalked up to Manziel not being diligent enough in his work.

What’s more, the Plain Dealer, citing sources, reported that some in the organization believed Manziel had “lost ground” in the battle to beat out Brian Hoyer for the starting job.

In more positive news for Manziel, the Plain Dealer reported that Manziel practiced well on Thursday. But it’s clear Manziel’s first professional offseason didn’t exactly go as some in the organization as hoped. Now, it’s on the Browns’ first-round pick to prove any discussion of his off-field habits is much ado about nothing.

Cabot, the Browns beat writer, is considered the "go to" source for accurate Browns info.

Reports on NFLN are that Manziel has never learned a playbook and never had to read a defense.

How can anyone believe he is ready to start in the NFLN without those basic fundamentals in place? Pure athletic ability? There are so many great athletes out there that winging it is just going to cost games. But some folks are positive that all he has to do is step on the field and "he's a winner".

Reports on NFLN are that Manziel has never learned a playbook and never had to read a defense.

If that's true, it doesn't surprise me.

The reason I never wanted Manziel here had more to do with what I saw from him actually playing than it had to do with his Johnny Football persona.

A&M's offense looked really simple to me. I don't recall many times (if ever) Manziel went through progressions or made a bunch of decisions pre snap or during a play.

Looked like if his first read wasn't there he immediately went Johnny football mode.

"I just want to let these guys know that my focus is football. This is my life. This is what I love to do. I've never been more dedicated and committed in my entire life. I'm so excited. I understand the challenge and the jump. There's no denying that,'' he told NFL Network. "I want to be one of those (stars) one day. ...whether it's Peyton Manning, whether it's Tom Brady, I see what it takes for them to be great. You have to be dedicated to it 100 percent that way.''
...
"I know I need to put all my time right now into maintaining my life in football and trying to be as good of a quarterback as possible,'' he said. "Everything else is extra and really there's no time for that now. I'm very committed to expanding my knowledge of the game and getting better as a quarterback. That's my focus right now.''
Team officials had bought into Manziel's pre-draft promises to tone down the partying and leave his frat-boy lifestyle back in College Station, Texas, and they've been stunned by his non-stop antics, sources said.

Since they traded up to draft him No. 22 overall on May 8, he's partied hard in New York City, Las Vegas twice, Los Angeles with hip-star Drake, Austin, Tex., Houston, Tex. and at pop star Justin Bieber's house in Beverly Hills with the likes of world boxing champ Floyd Mayweather.

The Bieber stuff is a dealbreaker for me. I'd have to cut him for that.

The Bieber connection made me go from indifferent to...uhhhh...not so indifferent.

Manziel can say football is his life, but like old Abe Lincoln said, calling a tail a leg don't make it a five-legged dog. Actions, as always, speak louder than words.

Brett Favre didn't know what a nickle defense was when he got to the Packers, he turned out ok....

just sayin'...

Even in his recent "apology" for "rookie mistakes"...........rookie mistakes????????????.......and being sure and emphatic that it should be expected since he is only 21 y/o..........it is obvious his words were coached up well, but his body language and presentation wreaks of having no clue as to the real problem...........nor would I bet that he ever smartens up to buy one by 51..........

His Public Relations company wrote up a nice wordy statement for him. Sometimes the statements these guys make are so transparent you can almost see the agent and PR people pulling the strings.

Part of the problem is so many want to let the 21 year old "kid" slide on everything. Chalk it up to "he's just doing what anyone did when they were at age". Way I see it if you want to be treated like a man; act like one. If you want to do "kid" ****, expect to be handled like a kid. Or at least be smart enough to not put your crap all over the internet. I don't think Johnny has ever had to live in the same reality that most everyone else does. He's probably so used to fans, coaches, parents, friends, relatives, making excuses for him he thinks all of this is standard operating procedure.

It's his life to do with what he wants. If he's successful so be it. If he crashes and burns so be it. I doubt there will ever be a time for JF when he doesn't have a soft cushion to land on when he screws up. Whether it's mom and dad's bank account or the multitude of "look the other way" fans offering up reasons/excuses for him.

There are now 19 pages of Manziel's antics in the offseason...

For better or worse, there seems to be an obsession with the kid. Everyone either wants to defend or attack his every move.

Regular season can't come soon enough.

Nineteen pages about a 2nd string QB on a team that isn't even in our division....

well, okay then

I like Manziel and hope he does well, but no way in the world would O'Brien and him have clicked. I can visualize smoke coming out of his head just thinking about his QB being in the headlines the way Manziel is. Don't get me wrong, at 21 and rich I probably would be doing similar things party wise. This just would have been a match made in hell.

I think you nailed it. Even my mom, who is a pretty die-hard Aggie fan, told me from day one when draft coverage began that "I can tell from Bill O'Brien's face that he and Johnny would hate each other. It's not going to happen."

Well, if he's that good, they should go ahead an induct him into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on August 3. ;)

possibly, they are pretty much the same player coming out of college. Favre with a better arm, of course, but both relied on improvisation on the field and if social media existed back then, Favre would be Manziel...

dude drank like a fish

Brett Favre was just some QB from Southern Miss that the Falcons traded to Green Bay the next year.

Favre actually had to prove that he could play and had to earn the right for the media crush.

Johnny Manziel, aka Johnny Football®, aka JFF®, aka Johnny 8ball, is pushing a corporate brand before he has proven anything and is constantly and consistently perpetuating media hype with predetermined actions/antics that are heavily managed by his own internal public relations team.

So while there might be some similarites between Favre and Manziel, they could not be any different regarding the expectations on each as a rookie in the league and the pressure to immediately perform well is completely different for each player at this point in their careers.

Brett Favre had room to fail and learn the ropes. Johnny Manziel must perform well in order to continue to sell his brand, not to mention that gigantic target he has made of himself to opposing defenses that would love nothing more than to take him down.

Not to mention Favre is 2" taller and had a much better arm than Manziel does right now. Favre's dad beeing a football coach also prepared him mentally for the game. Not sure about Manziel's mental preparations up to this point.

yeah, but there's only ONE Johnny Manziel, aka Johnny Football®, aka JFF®, aka Johnny 8ball.:spin:

Favre may have never been Brett Favre if Glanville hadn't dealt him without giving him a real shot . The Packers got him because Ron Wulf left the Falcons and went to the Packers and had a much higher opinion of Favre than Jerry did . Favre also worked with Holmgren , Gruden , Marriuci , Reid , and others . Favre put the work in and had great teachers .

Casserly: Browns QB of the future is not on the roster

Casserly -- the former Redskins general manager -- believes that Cleveland's "quarterback of the future is tied to its two No. 1 draft choices for next year," writing: "I don't think Brian Hoyer or Johnny Manziel will be the answer."

Casserly ranked Hoyer's play ahead of Manziel and believes the veteran "should stay there for the preseason" as "the difference in practice is not overwhelming."

Reports today continue to relate Manziel looking bad in practice.

That's not really a surprise to anybody that has been paying attention. He already had a pretty big transition going forward as it pertains to adapting his playing style to the NFL. Add in the fact that he's been just as cavalier off the field as he was in college and you have a recipe for a guy who's getting a severe reality check. He needs to decide if he wants to be a Quarterback or a celebrity.

Funny how some people here only like to report one side

PERFECT SONG: As Manziel guided the Browns down field in a two-minute drill late in practice, the Beastie Boys' "(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party!)" blasted through speakers on the field. Manziel, whose escapades during the offseason brought him widespread criticism, ended the practice by lobbing a short touchdown pass to rookie fullback Ray Agnew.

JUDGING JOHNNY: Browns coach Mike Pettine said after looking at the tape of Sunday's practice he felt Hoyer had outperformed Manziel.

"Brian was sharper than he was the first day," Pettine said. "Manziel was inconsistent, did some good things and then probably did some things he would have taken back. I think that's just all part of it."

TALKING JOHNNY: Browns Pro Bowl tackle Joe Thomas said behind the scenes Manziel is very different from the Johnny Football persona one would expect.

"Johnny is kind of a quiet guy around the facility," Thomas said. "I'm sure it's hard for most people to believe that with the kind of personality that he's built up. But he's kind of quiet. He does things the right way. You look at his notebook and he's got all sorts of good notes. He sits in the front next to the coach and he's just focused on his job when he's here."

Joe Namath and Ken Stabler were both notorious partiers...wonder if they would be demonized before they took a snap (like Manziel) if they came out today.

If they were all over everyone's news feeds, probably.

Tebow was not a big partier, but a lot of people didn't like him the same.

Andre likes to go out a lot too. Pretty sure there are other guys that like to party on the Texans, but I know for a fact Andre goes out quite a bit.

For the record, I don't care either way about Manziel. I mean, I don't believe he's going to be a good NFL QB, but I'm not rooting against him--or for him.

But the whole Manziel thing is just interesting to follow to me. We'll call it curiosity.

AJ doesn't (a) spread self is of himself partying while (b) knowing he has a public image issue and (c) having been told by his team to tone it down.

The only similarities between AJ and Manziel are two black players drinking.

I think they would only because the rules for behavior have changed. Back then, that type of behavior was acceptable and even laughed and/or joked about.

Even back in early 80's in the corporate world three martini lunches and perhaps more on Fridays was normal in some settings (mine). However, by the 90's it was wise to have tea with those lunches.

I can't even say that you have to walk the straight and narrow these days to avoid scrutiny, because it didn't work for Tebow.

Pretty sure the Texans have at least one star player with a selfie "issue". :kitten:

Not sure if this was to me, but that was my point.
