Brian T. Smith @ChronBrianSmith
O'Brien: "You're a coach. And that's what you love to do." Said he learned to be hands-on and that's how he'll be with #Texans. #NFL

#Texans' O'Brien on being a hands-on coach: "What are you going to do? Go out there and stand underneath the shed there and drink Gatorade?"

#Texans' O'Brien said Duane Brown is fine. Went down because he chased ball nearly 100 yards. "He left it out on the field."

Improvement on both sides of ball today but there were turnovers, O'Brien said. #Texans

#Texans' Bill O'Brien on Arian Foster: "He's a really good football player, obviously. ... The Houston Texans need a healthy Arian Foster."

#Texans added red-zone installation and punt return today, O'Brien said. #NFL

#Texans' Arian Foster took it to a new level today, answering, "I'm just trying to be the best teammate I can be," to every question. #NFL
Houston Texans @HoustonTexans
"He's a guy that I probably don't talk about enough. Great teammate, really good person, really puts the team first." O'Brien on @DuaneBrown76

O'Brien says Foster is smart, instinctive and talented. "The Texans need a healthy Arian Foster." #Texans #NFLTrainingCamp
James Palmer @JPalmerCSN
Kareem Jackson confirmed to me he was playing inside during goal line pick. Jumped route. looking good inside. Has never played there before now

Interesting take from O'Brien about being Head Coach... When a turnover happens you get upset, but now have to look at the other unit & say J Jo made nice play

Texans installed red zone, punt return and phase two of no huddle today. Players have off tomorrow. #texanstrainingcamp

O'Brien said Arain Foster looked good today. Training staff running the show but listening to Foster more than they would with other players

Players sticking out to O'Brien because of extra effort: D.Brown, Myers, Watt, J Jo, A.Johnson. Said Brown left practice after chasing Kareem Jackson 100 Yds

O'Brien said at 37 Shane Lechler passed his conditioning test.

Asked about being a hands on coach, O'Brien said what am I going to do? Stand under the shed and drink Gatorade? #OBHumor

Just heard that interview with Arian Foster on 610 where he responded to every question with "Im just trying to be a good team mate."

Why am I thinking this was a shot at O Brien and Arian is not happy about something?

I sure hope B. Brooks can get on the field soon. Kupper and Jones at the G positions scare the heck out of me.

My hope was to have X fill in at LG, but it sounds like he's had a rough go of it these first few days. Hopefully he can get up to speed soon. Good off season or not, I cringe at the thought of Jones starting at any position along the oline.

I'm also not too enthused seeing Brooks Reed back at OLB. I'd rather see Mercilus and Clowney outside.

http://houston.cbslocal.com/2014/07/30/watt-to-see-more-time-on-the-blind-side/

For most of his NFL career all-pro defensive lineman J.J. Watt has lined up of the left side, but in Romeo Crennel’s 3-4 he’s been lining up more and more on the right side with number one overall pick Jadeveon Clowney behind him.

Lining up on the right side allows him to attack quarterback’s from their blind side. Pair that with Jadeveon Clowney and it could prove to be a lethal combination.

“It can be very lethal. It’s intimidating,” Linebacker Justin Tuggle, who lines up in the middle with Watt and Clowney to his right, said. “We just have to keep on working so we can put it out there on the field and have it ready to roll when the games kick up.”

Watt and Clowney both lining up on a QB's blind side.

Andrew.....come out and playay!!

I don't think this is a shot at BOB, I think this is a shot at the media. They really crossed the line when they showed up at his house to grill him over the TMZ story. There's a reason he hasn't interacted with them since 2013. They broke the decency barrier and now it's biting them.

Media/player relationships are two way streets. The media relies on the athletes to give them the stories and the interviews. They broke that trust big time with Foster. Now he's paying them back for it

I keep seeing that pic with 3 down and Reed and Clowney up but only a shade off the line. Is this just a D line drill or are we going to be seeing some 5-2 shades of Wade's D?
...

It was just D-line and outside linebackers in that drill. Mercilus was running with 2nd team in this drill. Opposite JJ they rotated between Crick and Jamison.

My love of this hire is growing daily. So awesome....

I've been working in Houston for the past couple of days, so I got to hear a little bit of 610. Spencer Tillman gave his thoughts on camp so far, and he thinks highly of Savage. Said he expects him to get some game reps by the end of the season.

http://blog.chron.com/ultimatetexan...-fans-appreciation-after-practice/#25408101=0

After practice today, defensive end J.J. Watt was signing autographs for fans on one end of the stands. Bob McNair saw other fans hoping to get Watt’s autograph, so the owner took their footballs to Watt to get him to sign for them.

” I took a few footballs to J.J.,” McNair said. “J.J. is the man. His signature is what counts.”

The fans cheered Watt and McNair. Afterward, McNair stayed and signed for more than 30 minutes.

“These are great fans,” McNair said. “We’re delighted to have them here. It’s great to make them happy.”

Watt is a big McNair fan.

“Mr. McNair’s awesome,” Watt said. “He takes of his fans and players. I love Mr. McNair. He’s a very hospitable owner. He’s a very genuine owner, and he’s a good guy. That’s why it’s fun to play in an organization like this.

“He’s still over their signing right now. That’s what people want to see. They want to see a guy who truly cares about the fans, about the organization and about the well-being of the team.”

By gawd! Even our owner is awesome!

My hype for this season is beyond warp speed! It is hitting plaid!

With Reed and Merciless...I'm going to wait and see if this coaching staff has made a difference with them. Merciless needs to become more violent and agressive.

I think Reed just is what he is. I actually like him as a SOLB as long as he doesn't have to cover athletic guys one on one too much. I never wanted to see Merciless and Clowney at OLB. I want Clowney playing weakside DE, and I don't think Merciless can play on the strong side.

Merciless is going to have to step it up, or I can see him just being a special teams guy.

I like Watt and Clowney moving around and seeing Watt playing on the weakside more. It allows him to still do what he does best on this defense. And with Clowney over there with him, both of those guys will have even more space to work with.

If we can get Reed or Merciless or one of the DE's, NT's to provide some good consistent pressure this defense is going to be really good at rushing the passer.

I also like Kareem inside in certain situations. This staff really seems like they are going to do what I begged the old staff to do -- Use players to their strengths. Kareem is a physical guy that excels in short coverage. Moving him inside at times, especially around the goal line or in short yardage situations is going to be really nice IMO.

This defense is going to be tough I believe. Just from the few things I've seen and heard. I can't wait until pre-season to see these guys work. Especially that Falcons week.

The problem is that the media can be very vengeful.......they seldom do not get the last laugh. If I were Arian, I'd cool it.

My hype for this season is beyond warp speed! It is hitting plaid!

We've always known we've had a great owner. McNair is the real deal. I think he probably feels guilty about last season, and is really grateful for fans hanging in there.

There was a lot of talk last year that McNair was tone deaf, didn't care what fans thought, and only cared about making money and not winning. I never thought that was the case. I just think he was loyal to a fault, and that loyalty reached its breaking point with a coach he really liked.

I think its more like Gary gave Uncle Bob the proverbial middle finger in that TNF game vs the Jags by inserting Schaub after being told not to

Good to hear fellow Aggie Travis Labhart is doing well at camps. I've been pulling for this guy and I think he can be an impact player at the slot position if given the chance.

I hate to make Wes Welker comparisons just cause they're both short and white, but man, Labhart has the capacity to be a poor man's Welker type slot option if he works hard.

FWIW Ben Jones has done the bit where he only answers "working hard trying to be a good teammate" to every question too. He's done that twice. Once during OTA's (no transcript), and once last night with Bob Allen.

So basically, Foster I guess is BenJonesing.

The big news is that he was practicing. Not that he was goofing on the non-answers that players are basically required to give. I'd be more surprised if Foster gave full and detailed answers to football questions. He knows he is being baited by questions like whether he is breaking down.

smaller quicker guys always look good before the heavy contact...just remember every year fans get excited about some quick guys that look good in shorts early in camp...then the hitting starts and *poof*.

never occurred to me to get an owners autograph...what is that all about? The only time I'd like to see his signature is on a check made out to me.

In the FWIW department, those who have skinny ankles and spindly lower legs tend to be much faster than those who don't.

How Arian Foster became the worst teammate he could possibly be …
July 30, 2014 1:53 PM
His passive aggression was as thinly veiled as his attempts at concealing the discomfort in his back.

Arian Foster returned to the Texans practice field Wednesday, briefly, and could have walked away from the day with masses of fans and members of the media beginning to change their opinions about the Diva Back.

He could have been hailed as a football warrior; a walking testament to the unselfish, faceless, no-one-person-is-bigger-than-the-team mentality that head coach Bill O’Brien is trying to establish. Most important, despite not fully participating in practice seemingly because of his back issue or precautionary limitations, he could have in an instant become the best teammate he could possibly be.

Instead, Foster became the worst. The absolute worst.

With a childish, selfish, disingenuous post-practice act, Foster cast the middle-finger to the media, Texans fans and, most important, his teammates and coaches.

When Foster returned to practice after missing two days because of some kind of aggravation to his back and lower-extremities, it was a surprise to see him return so quickly. It was a big surprise. For all his bizarre characteristics, after all, Foster is the best thing this Texans offense has going for it. Plus, despite battling injuries in recent seasons, Foster is a proven commodity.

Frankly, he didn’t have to return to practice on Wednesday, or the rest of this week or next, for that matter. No one would care if Foster even played a down the entire preseason. He is that good and that important.

And when he returned despite what clearly was some kind of discomfort or tightness in his back — as he repeatedly could be seen talking with trainers and stretching his back on Wednesday — Foster obviously was on the field despite not being 100-percent.

But then he spoke to the media for the first time. What followed made Foster look even more like the Prima Donna he is. Worse, by answering every question with, “I’m just trying to be the best teammate I can be,” Foster did exactly what O’Brien preaches against.

He made it all about Arian Foster. He thumbed his nose at the world, jammed a wedge between himself and the public and unfairly put pressure on teammates and coaches to answer for him and explain his nonsense.

Say what you will about all you care about is Foster producing on the field. Regardless, he acted bigger than the team, as if the rules of simple propriety and Bill O’Brien apply to everyone but him.

He also gave himself little leeway the next time — and there will be a next time — he makes a mistake or, worse, misses time because of injuries that continue to nag. What a child.

Arian is getting a massively raw deal. The guy can't win. When he was out for ONE day of training camp to rest a minor injury, everyone turns against him. Then he comes back, and doesn't "perform" the way the media and fans want him to in interviews, and he's STILL slammed.

I need to remind everyone of last year when JJ answered one question at a press conference and stormed off. Everyone was all like, "Wow, he's dedicated! He just wants to WIN!"

The irony is, what no one knows is that JJ is the biggest douche a-hole on the team. He just hides it well.

FWIW Ben Jones has done the bit where he only answers "working hard trying to be a good teammate" to every question too. He's done that twice. Once during OTA's (no transcript), and once last night with Bob Allen.

Amen. And I saw your twitter debate with MK and Tania. Tania was wrong. Let's all recall JJ storming off during a press conference last year...

This is much ado about nothing. Arian knew he was being bated, and he didn't take the bait.

That article about Foster is a big fat joke. Totally disproportional. It is more of a surprise when you get a good answer to any questions.

The coach wants him to say nothing. The media knows that the coach wants him to say nothing. So he is very much saying nothing. In a haha way. This is all some fictional dance that gets some folks' panties in a wad.

There are some players that everyone loves. And some players that evoke a love or hate response. Ultimately, personalities aside, if you excel or you suck, none of that stuff matters.
